Miss this. So many happy memories of watching these guys play. Fantastic golfers, wonderful characters, great banter that made all golf tournaments so special. Seve and Trevino were awesome together.
Why they don’t do more of this sort of stuff now is beyond me! Great seeing Seve hitting the big hook and putting left handed. Total legend! Trevino and his banter pretty close second!
I'd love to see more of this kind of thing. From 1960-1990 is golf's greatest era and there were many such events. If you can find em, please post em, and please keep me posted!
So many household names and characters back then. Nowadays with better equipment players can overpower courses so you just don't have the same connection with them. Hate to say it, but golf's great days are long gone and it's starting to die.
This is a time in gold where these guys knew how to work their ball around a course instead of the BOMB and Wedge game of today . It truly a boring game to watch today , its why I don't watch the PGA much anymore .
Lee Trevino and Seve Ballesteros were two of the greatest shot makers golf has ever seen. They had the talent and the imagination to shape shots in the mind, then play them!
No that title belongs to Tiger Woods in his prime. There's never been anyone in the history of the game that had literally any and every shot in the bag. You call the shot, he had it. Argue majors or whatever you want it doesn't make a difference. The only other person I would say comes close is Hogan.
Sincere thanks Sevefan for sharing this rare footage. How perfect that Mr. Alliss is on the commentary. Surely three of the greatest characters the golf world has ever known. I wonder if anyone will do a Seve film? I had the great fortune to see him play at the Honda in perhaps his final appearance there. Though past his prime, he still radiated an aura of charisma that no one could ignore. His eyes were an open window into his deep passion for the game. So few are so open.
Thanks for this 1 mate....I remember this from yesteryear ! Also they played pro-am around the same time on tv.It was good viewing too.We were priviledged.
Trevino was just as effective with one club, but lacked Seve's physical power. Seve could probably hit a 5 iron 30 or 40 yards past Trevino. That's where Seve's advantage was. But working the ball left/right, around the green, out of bunkers, etc., they were pretty even. And Chi Chi Rodriguez was no one club slouch, either. In today's game, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson would probably be the best one club players.
well the picture quality really is not so bad if u consider when it was!! the way seve plays is just incredible... thank u very much for that great moment of golf
I remember watching this at the time so I am real pleased you posted this as I didnt record it. I also remember several other one club challenges made at the same time with Seve and some of the Americal players. All great memories.
Thank you for posting this. I remember watching the series during its original broadcast but at the time I couldnt record it so its great for me to see it again. They played different partners each game, they where obviously all filmed on the same day just after the open was played. I recall that you could tell from Seve's attitude that he didnt think much to Hal Sutton. Thanks a gain.
I think that was the year Watson was trying to win his third in row, and Seve had the great finish with birdie? and Watson had trouble , at the road hole? It was an exciting finish
Nick Faldo strangely gets overlooked. He was a 6 times Major Champion and one of the nicest guys, but who kept to himself. He had charisma in his own right. A legend in his own right. Nick loved Seve and Seve loved Nick.
How cool if some billionaire offered an absurd purse of say 15 mil for a four day tournament. Players could only use 4 clubs on two of the days and on the other days they'd have to play with pre-1980's golf clubs only. Or just one or the other. Everyone would tune in to that.
Golf channel ought to have a 'throwback' week, maybe in late december when nothings going on, and televise all the old Shell WWOG, silly season events, exhibitions, and all this stuff from 30+ years ago.
I've actually practiced with the following: 3 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 iron, gap wedge & putter. Long Par 5s: 3W off the tee and then again in the fairway for 2nd approach shot, GW if less than 110, or choke all the way down on the 5 iron if greater than 130 out Par 4s: any combination of 3W or 4H off the tee, followed by 4H, 5I or GW full swing for second approach Par 3s are tricky because of low yardages for sand shots: Open the GW up all the way; GW becomes SW very easily with an open clubface.
how i wish they did one club challeges today and aired them on tv..i read in a book when trevino was not known yet and just hustling for money on the golf course he was so cocky he would tease guys into playing him for money and the handicap was Lee was only able to use three clubs,,, a 5 iron,, sand wedge and a putter.. he said he never lost to anyone playing with those 3 clubs for money.. im sure was like some of the classic hustlers who played billiards...some of them were just monsters when cash was on the line and never if ever would they choke..
I'm sure a bit of digging on the internet may confirm the Seve/Trevino match you mention, I can't remember it myself. Sadly, this is the only episode I recorded and kept.
This was recorded the week after Seve won the open at St Andrews in 1984. Great memories of Seve’s dance on the 18th, later on the Sunday night someone had climbed up into the big yellow scoreboard at the 18th and was taking requests from the public below to put their name at the top above Watson, Langer , etc, and then watching these two tackle the old course with a 4/5 iron - happy days.
I believe Sutton tried to play a 4 iron and was eliminated early when he could not escape the pot bunker. Thank you for posting this memorable match. I believe they had a single elimination stroke play involving more player. 6 or 7?
After hearing the story about Seve hitting shot out of bunker with a 3 iron because it was the only club he owned as kid I was inspired to practice until I could do the same thing. What I learned in the process is that if you you place the club on the ground with leading age facing target where the ball will release off the face the nominal loft of the club matters little. What matters more is being able to get your body into the position to deliver the club back to that position. The way to do that is simply to set your club and body at address in the same way you want to at impact when addressing the ball. When I started lining up at address like that for regular shots with club at nominal loft and shaft angle with hips locked 45° open and shoulders back with side bend I started hitting the shots I imagined for the first time. Now when I teach any one I start by putting their club and body where they need to be at impact so they have a clue what the goal of the swing is and where the face need to be pointing when the ball releases off of it.
There will NEVER be another Seve. What a legend.
That must be the late, great Mr. Peter Alliss commentating. Such a blessing it has been to listen to Mr. Alliss doing his work.
Seve the most naturally talented golfer to ever live. God rest his soul.

@@adriansolis7760not even close. He just bashes it like a mongoloid.

Time moves so quickly. Soon our days today will be the “good old days” to some generation after us
Seve, what a player RIP man..... Lee, forever talking but always my hero.... Gods of golf
What a great vid, imagine this happening today! golf was more fun in the 80s
certainly must be the "Golden Age of Golf" .... Heroes All ... Eternal Blessings Seve ... Thankyou Sevefan, incredible memories !!!
Why they don’t do more of this sort of stuff now is beyond me! Great seeing Seve hitting the big hook and putting left handed. Total legend! Trevino and his banter pretty close second!

Will do :-)
I am 48
I think we are currently enjoying the best era.
But I love 80s golf.
So many household names and characters back then. Nowadays with better equipment players can overpower courses so you just don't have the same connection with them. Hate to say it, but golf's great days are long gone and it's starting to die.
Very entertaining, cheers! I saw Seve and Nick F at the Australian Open in the mid 80's.. unforgettable.
Seve could of beaten me with one club, and a blindfold on, what a great man, taken away from us far too early, a truly shinning star 🌟
two best shot makers in the history of the game lee and seve!
All clips of the great Seve are worth watching time and time again...
As a patriotic Brit, very glad to will Seve on to win ! He learnt the game while only owning one club...great man.
This is a time in gold where these guys knew how to work their ball around a course instead of the BOMB and Wedge game of today . It truly a boring game to watch today , its why I don't watch the PGA much anymore .
Seve's swing is so nice and fluid.
Lee Trevino and Seve Ballesteros were two of the greatest shot makers golf has ever seen. They had the talent and the imagination to shape shots in the mind, then play them!
Great footage! One of those videos that makes you glad you have seen it.
talent like that should live forever
Yes, the gods of our time. They should never die, and women and children should be sacrificed to keep them alive. Think before you type.
lot of people forget aoki, he was class, and world class.
What could be more challenging and fun than to go out on the links with one club and test your shot making abilities!
Thanks for posting this!
I must have watched this video 25+ times love it most entertaining and informative
As gifted as Trevino was, I've never seen anyone with the shotmaking genius of Seve. He was the greatest golfing artist in history!
No that title belongs to Tiger Woods in his prime. There's never been anyone in the history of the game that had literally any and every shot in the bag. You call the shot, he had it. Argue majors or whatever you want it doesn't make a difference. The only other person I would say comes close is Hogan.
@@LTR1420 agreed people like sharing titles to lots of people.....short game i think so but Tiger was complete....not even Phil.....
@@LTR1420 Strongly disagree Seve was the king of creativity on the course.
@@goldleader6169 That's cool. You're entitled to your opinion. I just don't see it. I agree he was great, but Tiger could do anything Seve did.
No one mastered a sand wedge, though, like Trevino
I miss Seve. He was good for golf and even better for humanity. Pure love.
Second golden age of golf. Those days are gone. Last hole watching Trevino’s action, such a swing!
Sincere thanks Sevefan for sharing this rare footage. How perfect that Mr. Alliss is on the commentary. Surely three of the greatest characters the golf world has ever known. If the game was only played with one club, Seve would have won 50 majors
And Trevino would have been his only challenger.
Trevino was just as effective with one club, but lacked Seve's physical power. Seve could probably hit a 5 iron 30 or 40 yards past Trevino. That's where Seve's advantage was. Seve wasn’t that good

well the picture quality really is not so bad if u consider when it was!!
the way seve plays is just incredible...
thank u very much for that great moment of golf
The 2 mist gifted SHOTMAKERS ever to Don a pair of spikes.. Trevino just by a TAD had the edge... Pure genius.. gifts from God.
I played with a 5 iron the other day 6 balls and a tee walked 9 wow this was fun you truly feel energized again to play golf.
very small heads on the irons. Seve was pure magic in those days

"pressure is playing for $100 with only $20 in your wallet"
Lee Trevino
He actually said Pressure was playing for $10 with $0 in your wallet.

seve and Trevino were artists....not too many players (if any) like that today.
thegowd Hell yeah wtf... you can’t have 3 majors at age 22 without being an artist...
pat stra
Only bubba Watson. But bubba hasn’t got 1% of the charisma of the great seve.
Love this, I got into golf the month he died.... I really missed out :(
Thanks for putting this up, at least I still get to see the genius at work! ;)
The thing that disappoints me about UA-cam is the quality of Seve videos. He was so much better in every way than the UA-cam videos of him show.
Thanks. If you haven't already go and buy the 'SEVE' DVD, its great!
This is pure magic.
Excellent to see, cheers for putting up!
And it was great to see St Andrews with the fairways all hard and burnt
Great to watch! This took place the day after the '84 Open had finished (notice some of the grandstands are still in place).
I think that was the year Watson was trying to win his third in row, and Seve had the great finish with birdie? and Watson had trouble , at the road hole? It was an exciting finish
This is what @golfchannel should be doing these days...
Used to love watching them on pro celebrity golf
Stunning, thank you
Nick Faldo strangely gets overlooked. He was a 6 times Major Champion and one of the nicest guys, but who kept to himself. He had charisma in his own right. A legend in his own right. Nick loved Seve and Seve loved Nick.
That's Sir Nick Faldo
Not in 1984 he wasn’t, he was a journeyman pro before his swing change - perhaps it was watching these two that made his mind up to change?
@@dennism5731 Who said anything about 1984? David Leadbetter told Nick he needed to change his swing to become a winner.
Time to grow a unibrow like the man, Seve.
Never before has a unibrow looked so good

God bless Seve
?? (Your) God killed him early you moron.
Jesus Christ Seve was a god with a golf club
thanks for this, so cool. in the days when real pro's used only blades.. gone are those days..
I concur and I personally love the feel of a well-struck "Blade" myself. Pure golf.
Fantastic and inspiring golf.
All golfers should do this as part of practice. Your playing partners can have a laugh, while you learn
Amazing how in every video shot you hear Trevino's voice. Can you imagine playing with him for 18 holes. Good gawd...
Jack has often said, he was very difficult to play with

my money is on Phil

Damn cancer. Seve and Faldo are born the same year. It would have been great to see an interview with Seve today. He is missed.
When you make Lee Trevino look pedestrian, You are the MAN.
Me and my son's golf coach played the young bucks at this game. We whacked their asses with old age and treachery. Classic.
Golf channel ought to have a 'throwback' week, maybe in late december when nothings going on, and televise all the old Shell WWOG, silly season events, exhibitions, and all this stuff from 30+ years ago.
I would wager Bubba and Cabrera would do well in this!
I'm a bit late on this response, but yeah, Bubba has shot 71 with only his driver, which is the second lowest 1 club score anyone ever shot.
This was a practice drill we did in the early 70's when I was learning golf in Austin, Tx. It is not easy!
Really like watching seve play
I can mind as a kid watching this on tv :) just subbed channel
seve's ball shaping is insane
So was Trevino's. Seve just had a lot more power than Lee.
That's golf! links style fast fairways and greens. Thanks for the video.
Those blades were so pure.
I've actually practiced with the following: 3 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 iron, gap wedge & putter.
Long Par 5s: 3W off the tee and then again in the fairway for 2nd approach shot, GW if less than 110, or choke all the way down on the 5 iron if greater than 130 out
