Rodney, I’ve watched dozens of your excellent “how to play” videos and I hope it’s ok to ask this question. Your delivery is so fluent and natural sounding that you don’t appear to be reading from a script, or even referring to notes, and yet you manage to cover every aspect of the game rules in a perfectly methodical and efficient way without any obvious editing and without ever having to backtrack or leaving even the smallest detail out. There’s never any pauses while you’re trying to recall some detail, or untimely waffling, or “Oh sorry I forgot this” or “I’ll come back to that later”. How do you manage to remember everything and get your performance down with such perfect accuracy each time? Does it require several takes, or do you just have a superhuman memory and flawless natural ability to articulate everything? Or to put it more simply, what’s the secret behind the production of your videos? :)
Hey David, I do follow a script! But I write the script the way I would speak if I "did" have perfect memory, so that helps me deliver it in a more natural fashion :)
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks Rodney. Your explanations are always very clear, helpful and well presented -- in my humble opinion. Also it was great to watching you play with the gang at GameNight. I've watched lots of their sessions also. Keep up the great work. Best wishes from New Zealand.

Thanks for the tutorial. I have a question. Some events are structures, such as Parapet from the Polar Dwarves. Must I discard them once my next turn begins?
Sorry, I’m traveling right now, so I’m not near a copy of the game, that said, I tend to avoid questions around specific card effects (too many variables for me to manage across all the games I cover), for that you might be best checking the publisher’s website, or the BoardGameGeek forums. All the best!
This game reminds me of “Yugioh: Duelists of the Roses” because the cards are mobile in both. How have I not heard of this game before??? I must have it, for cards are my miniatures! 😂🤓
Hello Rodney!! All of your videos are top quality and now because of you and your amazing explanation Summoner Wars is now my all-time favourite board game. I have a really specific question and anyone is welcome to comment if it is within their knowledge: Tacullu of the Breakers faction uses her ability to mind control enemy units and turns them to her side instead of the opponent discarding them . Let's say that the opponent now kills the mind controlled unit. Will this unit be discarded to my discard pile since it's now mine or to the opponent's. This information is vital because it adds a huge advantage against factions like the Vanguards or the Fallen Kingdom which can return discarded units.Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed the video and have been enjoying the game! I think I can help. In the rules it says this: DISCARD: To discard a card, place it face down on top of its OWNER'S discard pile. When a card is discarded from the battlefield, any cards under it are discarded and any tokens on it are removed. If a discarded card is later placed back on the battlefield, it is considered a new card. OWNER: A player is the owner of a card if they started the game with that card in their deck. So, the definition of these two game terms would suggest that discarded cards go to their owner's discard pile, and the owner is the player who began with the card in their deck. Which means if a "controlled" card is discarded, it goes to the owner's discard pile (not the controllers). Hope that helps!
Great work! This game has been on my List for YEARS but it was always hard to find (and/or costly). I play the app version often. I have to say, I’m a little surprised they didn’t split the cards so that the player on the other side could read them clearly. A big downside to the strategy is not paying attention to your opponents cards and it’s a little weird to keep having to ask or to grab it and read it, then forgetting where you grabbed it from, ha! Tarot sized cards could accomplish this though it would greatly increase the cost. But man, that would look impressive.
Probably the logistics of the board size would be an issue too. A card might be facing you, but at tarot size, it would be so far away, you still might not be able to read it :) If you pick a copy up I hope you have a great time playing!
First edition is still playable as is, but if you feel you might not play it as much if you had the option to play 2nd Edition, then perhaps you might want to sell it, or gift it to someone new to the hobby (I often enjoy doing that when I have a game that maybe I'm ready to move from my collection).
Hi Jose, thanks so much! I don't make personalized recommendations (what I like, someone else might not), however, we do have videos for both, so you can check them out and see what might appeal most to you! :)
But what about the event cards on the Summoner back during setup? Are they included in the first five cards in your hand or are they additional cards to those drawn at the beginning? It don't write anywhere or do I put it in my hand at all or somewhere else?
Has anyone ever played it like that? Maybe, people make mistakes... SW has always been a great 2 player game and a mediocre 4 player game, so it makes sense.
Neither. Each Summoner has 2 deckbuilding symbols. There are 12 symbols total. Each of these 6 has symbols no one else has, so their cards can only go with them. Later summoners will have cards of symbols that are already in use. Ie, a summoner now has symbols A and B. A later summoner might have symbols A and C. The A cards from either can be used in either.
@@chardris77 I believe each Summoner has 3 symbols rather than 2. And some common cards have 2 symbols on them, but you only need one of the symbols to be the same as ANY one of your summoner symbols to be able to be a part of their deck. @@GaNSiNaTeR True. Each summoner has the basic symbol, plus their unique mix of 2 of the deckbuilding symbols. The basic one is what allows for mercenaries. As long as a card you want to add gas at least one in common with the summoner, it’s good to go.

I've never been that big on deck building, especially when the premade decks are pretty well put together, but if they end up putting some mercenary/ reinforcement packs out there I may end up having to buy into them this time around, it helps to start collecting around when the games launch rather than later on like I did with first edition!

Rodney is the Master of the video tutorial. Should he die suddenly (God forbid), say via a future flu pandemic, a stray landmine incident, or falling from a ladder while rescuing a kitten, then to learn board game rules will require careful watching of a minimum of 5 alternative videos and filtering out all the inaccuracies until you have the complete rules. @@WatchItPlayed Thanks for making such a great tutorial! That video convinced me to throw my money at the screen earlier. Now I'm just hoping you do a "Watch it played" for the 1960 game.

It's something you calculate in the moment (or if you want, you could add a die to the card, with a number of pips showing equal to its bonuses if you're having trouble keeping track).
Is there any pdf that I can print and cut the cards out to play? I would really like to pay the creators for their awesome work but you know, my country's economy is not at its best right now (I am pretty unsure if the situation ever got worse but pretty sure will get worse and worse day by day) and a board game which is not produced locally (no modern game does) comes with 40€+20€shipping and thats 1/3 of minimum wage here😔 I am still desperately trying to finish my hanmade copy of catan after 4+ hours of work

Nice work with the video! Perhaps you could work on balancing your microphone audio? Throughout the video, it sounded like your voice was making the microphone peak and it was not really nice to hear at a modest volume.
I'm not having that problem on my end, and haven't heard others bring that up - so I'm not sure how I'd correct for it in your case. Even more challenging, everything is recording below any peaking levels. Strange!
@@WatchItPlayed New design is like cartoon, but look great.😊 And the dices look great, game mat too. I'm wondering why insert is so trashy without dividers, so much free space and how is supposed to stand the decks?🤔🙄
@@milennilievv4261 My guess is that it's to keep the costs down. As much as I like custom inserts, the primarily purpose of the insert is to ensure that the product stays safe during shipment from around the world, to our various homes. For me, baggies are doing the job right now :)
No, as a chess player, it's not much like chess. Chess is deterministic and uses alternating activations for the action system. This is highly random and uses a phase-based turn system. SW is more like a spatially-aware MTG.

Ugh I like the rule changes. What do I do with my big summoner wars master set now? 😱😭
It's technically a different game so I'll keep mine for now
Exactly. The new edition doesn't mean a person can't still enjoy their original.
Great explanation. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Please can you post a video on Citadels classic

I don't understand boosters. If s unit says it can consume a booster to do a thing, where do I get that booster? Just grab it out if the pile freely?
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Boost are granted to units from special effects of either their own or others
We need a playthrough ;-)
Hang in there then, we have one coming with Monique and Naveen!
Which edition of Summoner Wars do you like better: 1st or 2nd, and why (like artwork, etc.)?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
@@WatchItPlayed So, in summary, you tend to stay away from sharing your personal opinions on things on the internet, and keep it to yourself in secret, then? (I did notice you mentioning that a few times on videos that you posted on twitter about that in the past, despite a lot of people asking that all the time.)
@@danielschaublin I do occasionally share opinions on games, but generally at times of my choosing - not by request (I get quite a few requests, so it would become quite challenging to be regularly explaining what I like and why I like it). I do try to answer all other questions and comments on my videos, and that tends to keep me busy enough :)
Rodney always says that he wouldn't bother doing a Watch It Played of a game he didn't like so you can read into that what you will :)
@@Veaseify I guess I'll take it as if a videos of a game goes up on the Watch It Played Channel, then it's most likely one he likes. Otherwise, then don't ask about it games that don't have videos on the channel. I think he wants to keep his personal thoughts on games, and personal life, private in those cases as much as possible.
I Hope They will eventually make a Deluxe Version of this in the future with a Neoprene Mat. The Neoprene Mat From Alliance’s was really nice.
I own the Complete First Edition, I even have it Sleeved in Their Custom Sleeves!
Still On the Fence about Purchasing this Edition.
Thanks for checking it out!
The Alliance neoprene map is still functional with the second edition, although some border lines will be covered
Never had this on my radar before, but this looks good.
Glad you enjoyed what you saw!
Or you could just read the rulebook itself, but as we know in many cases, Rodney Smith IS the rulebook.
Hopefully I'll avoid all major mishaps, and can continue this for some time to come :)
What are the differences from 1st edition? I have a 1st edition set but can't quite grok if there's enough to make me want to upgrade.
Please check the description of the video.
@@WatchItPlayed
I knew that, I was just testing you. (Yeah, that’s it, testing, he’ll buy that...)
This tutorial is just perfect.
Thanks Sunny, I hope you have a fun time paying!
How do you add +1 strength to a unit? Do you just place a boost token to the card?
Wasn't there a recent "How to play" for 1960: The making of a president? Was that video removed?
Just a few minutes ago. Making a correction.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks for making such a great tutorial! That video convinced me to throw my money at the screen earlier. Now I'm just hoping you do a "Watch it played" for the 1960 game.
First. Who’s your fave new Summoner, Rodney?
I haven't played all the new ones yet (played 4 of the 6 so far), so still deciding.
@@WatchItPlayed Of the four you’ve played which do you like?
@@DullDishwater I'm partial to the breakers right now, but also dug the goblins.
Hey watch it played could you do me a favour and teach how to play marvel champions card game. I love it but it makes no sense and you guys are the best at explaining the rules. Thank you
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
How do you add +1 Strength to a card? Do you just add 1 boost token to the card?
It's something you calculate in the moment (or if you want, you could add a die to the card, with a number of pips showing equal to its bonuses if you're having trouble keeping track).
Really like the new art style and new rule changes
Thanks for checking it out!
Can someone tell me if you can use a summoners power just once? Or can you use it every time you use your summoners?
Your summoner's ability (along with any unit's ability) resolves anytime it would apply (unless it says otherwise).
Is there any pdf that I can print and cut the cards out to play? I would really like to pay the creators for their awesome work but you know, my country's economy is not at its best right now (I am pretty unsure if the situation ever got worse but pretty sure will get worse and worse day by day) and a board game which is not produced locally (no modern game does) comes with 40€+20€shipping and thats 1/3 of minimum wage here😔 I am still desperately trying to finish my hanmade copy of catan after 4+ hours of work
I'm not aware of a print and play version.
does the digital version of SW2.0 allow deck building?
Good question, but sure what their plans are with that.
Does the game come with a good storage solution like Alliances did?
This is a standard insert, no specific storage solution.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks for the feedback Rodney
This game looks amazing!!!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Do we know the release date for the pre-orders?
Plaid Hat’s website says ETA is early Nay 2021. Preorders being taken until May 1.
06:01 Why all the walls look the same
Not really sure how to answer this.
Do you have a "How to play" for all the games on your shelf?
Not for all of them (so many games, so little time), but you'll find all the tutorials we have here: ua-cam.com/play/PLHvfN_pNBj_GmnKzVaGCiYuKQcIkuz-eP.html
Glad for all the people who get to try out the new edition but I'll stick with my original. Too much content to bother starting over.
A fine way to think of it - the new edition doesn't invalidate your original edition if you're enjoying that!
Strange!
Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Can you teach us how to play agricola

@@WatchItPlayed i understand :) thanks for the fast response! love the channel btw
@@SuperMazzara Thank you!
the original version was awesome, one of my favorite games, but I really dont like that new artwork style
Those kinds of changes won't be for everyone - but thanks for checking out the video!
I hope to buy it until end of he year.😁
you can buy it now and get it in may.
Glad you enjoyed what you saw!
@@RottenJeeves Not now, i have to make repairs at home 😁😁
@@WatchItPlayed New design is like cartoon, but look great.😊 And the dices look great, game mat too.
I'm wondering why insert is so trashy without dividers, so much free space and how is supposed to stand the decks?🤔🙄
@@milennilievv4261 My guess is that it's to keep the costs down. As much as I like custom inserts, the primarily purpose of the insert is to ensure that the product stays safe during shipment from around the world, to our various homes. For me, baggies are doing the job right now :)
so... this is basically chess with dice and special abilities? I'm really curious to see how it plays
That’s the elevator pitch, definitely, and it knocks it out of the park.
Keep an eye out - we may have a game play coming :)
No, as a chess player, it's not much like chess. Chess is deterministic and uses alternating activations for the action system. This is highly random and uses a phase-based turn system. SW is more like a spatially-aware MTG.
RULES UPDATE:
This is a recent rule update that is posted around 2 days ago
You cannot play 2 active event cards of the same name in the same turn
Interesting! Do you have a link to where this was shared?
Joe (the dev behind SW Online) 's blog
Is this edition compatible with the 1st edition?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there (don't worry, this is covered in the first 2 minutes).
Seems like this editon is less dark than the previous one. I didnt spot any difference in gameplay though.
Check the description for the document that details the differences.
I see shades of Ashes here...which I think Rodney still prefers ?! 🤣
They both have cards, and involve destroying an opponents hero, but otherwise, I find they play quite differently.
@@WatchItPlayed But you would still prefer.......
@@billl7646 I don't really think of games in those terms. It's situational. There are situations where I'd prefer Ashes, and situations where I'd prefer Summoner Wars. Know what I mean? But I do adore Ashes, that's for sure.
@@WatchItPlayed Agreed sir! Love your team and all your videos. Great work!!
Pokemon TCG meets Yu-Gi-Oh! Looks nice! :)
You must not own a plaid hat, Rodney? How does Colby let that continue?
Oh, I have a couple :)
I really don't like that art style.
And that is okay :)
That is okay :)
I never played this game, but i heard a lot of good stuff about it.
I think im gonna try it, but probably older version, as i really dont like art here. Looks too cartoonish.
Hope you enjoy it, if you get a chance to try it out!
Smoooth Flip. Thanks for the content!!
Very glad you enjoyed!
Great clear explanation. Ty
