Wow this game looks great and fitting of the Dune theme. I like how thorough Rodney was where he would repeat and reiterate certain elements that could be confusing. Great video as always
Something the designer clarified in Discord: if you remove troops using a Combat card (like the second effect of the one demonstrated), you *lose* the strength they contribute (so, in this case, 2 per troop removed). The option is there to allow you to save troops you didn't need for victory, or to get out of a conflict where you aren't going to benefit from. And if you don't have at least one troop deployed when the conflict is resolved, you're not included, no matter how many Swords you revealed earlier. You literally didn't show up. Yes, this could mean rounds where no one fights and no one gets rewards.
Makes sense. I only just purchased it and haven’t played the game yet. But… it seems kind of intuitive that this is how it would work. I take it that it wasn’t felt to be obvious in practice? (Rodney does stress your 2nd point, though, that you have to have troops in the conflict or you’re simply not involved. But it’s probably a point that needs to be stressed, because you could definitely see people wanting to play the card and say “that counts!”)
Thanks Rodney! I am late to this game and was hitting a wall learning it. It's actually been set up on my table for a few weeks now. This video will help a lot!

@@WatchItPlayed Not at all. Curious if you do, and which ancient master taught you the art of board game box spinning. I love your videos by the way. My favorites ones for learning a game.
Great job as always, Rodney! Excellent rundown of the rules. Initially seemed overly complex (the 31-minute runtime was telling) but you broke it down until the basic mechanics revealed themselves. So it's worker-placement with a bit of deck-building plus combat on Arrakis--I love it already!
This was the most helpful how to play board game video I have ever seen, so clear and concise, covering every little nuance, quite amazing. Would have loved also an extra minute or two just to cover the one player / two player game extra sheet, but still quite a perfect overview.
I had the game on my shelves for 3 months. The rules looked daunting. But after watching this video I was ready to play in less than an hour! Luckily I already know a few deck building games but this channel is really superb. NOT only to study new rules but also to relearn games you did not play for a longer period of time. One small REMARK though. In these COVID times it is perhaps good to make a small attachment about the solo play. Lots of people would like that in these times, I am sure about that. Side note: I got beaten heavely by both bots in my first 2 games 😀
It’s kind of funny… I don’t play a lot of worker-placement games. But I’ve played “Lords of Waterdeep” and I found myself realizing that although there seem to be a ton of rules, each of those spaces really does a remarkably good job of telling you how they work. It might not actually be that complicated a game. I agree with you though, that it sure seems complicated the first time you go through a rules-explanation. And I plan to watch one more time before I break out my box for the first time ;)
@@WatchItPlayed It was a great game night and almost no rules question left. Thanks to your video I felt so comfortable with the rules that we even started with the more complex characters. I have chosen Vladimir Harkonnen (successfully - I won with 11 points 😁)
Thank you so much for all you do, you have been a major help to me and my enjoyment in this wonderful hobby. I always search to see if you've done a video on how to play anytime I get a new game, or sometimes even if I'm just thinking about getting one. For games I know how to play confidently, but maybe haven't played in awhile, I will always look up your video to remind myself of set up, and having the time sections broken up, makes it so easy to find something if there was one rule I wanna remind myself of before playing. Not only that, during the pandemic I've gotten my sister into board games and we play games online, and/or over a webcam. If I send her a new game or we're gonna play one online, I just send her the link to your video, and it makes learning it that much easier. So again thank you, second only to the people who play the games with me, you make being in this hobby better for me!

I just got this and wanted to make sure i understood the rules! You're my go-to for board games because you do such a good job at visualizing everything you play! Thanks so much!
Gotta say, this video did its job well! I knew nothing about the game coming in, and after watching I placed a pre-order for it. This one looks like it'll be a hit with my group.
Played this one yesterday and it is fantastic. I borrowed my mate's copy and plan to teach it tonight so this was a great resource for cramming the rules through my thick skull.
I'm here to try and learn about this game because I had told my father about DUNE, then I went and bought DUNE, without my knowing he thought he had bought DUNE as well, but it arrived today and he had bought this instead. So I'll still have the Gale Force 9 Reprint but now we have this whole other game to figure out if we'd even like. I am noticing though, and impressed that, you reply to a whole lot of people in your comments! That's really cool and probably takes a bit of time.
Rodney I just got this game and my family loves it surprisingly. We love everdell and it honestly isn’t that different so it was easy to pick up. Only one worker per tile, people can end their turn early like ending the season, and you collect resources and cards to strengthen later turns. We are very happy with this game
So nice to hear this was a good fit - sometimes it can be hard to tell in advance if people are going to enjoy or bounce off of a game - always a relief (and joy) when a game is a hit!
I am finally getting around to playing this game, and thank goodness for your video, Rodney, I did NOT get any of that from the rules book. I a going to read it again, but I definitely got nothing from the rules that told me what I learned in this great video!!!
Great video as always Rodney! Whenever I'm going to play a game with my group and they have never played the game in question, I always send them links to your video on the game, because you explain it better than I ever could. Would love a video for Root, because that one, while not too complicated to play, is a real pain to explain, because it's like four games in one! Love and appreciate your work!
Rodney, you're the best. Thanks so much for making this video and for making it so short! It's the perfect video to watch when we haven't played it in a while and need the perfect refresher. As it turns out we had been missing that rule about displacing someone's faction from a spot on the board, so thanks for that clarification as well! Your channel is the best :)

This actually looks like a really interesting game. Deck builders are a hard sell for me these days, since they are so similar to eachother, but this looks very unique with how your cards are useable in different ways and all the things happening on the board.
Receiving the game in few days, I've been hesitant for a long time but your top notch video really convinced me. I'm really looking forward to bring it to my game nights. Thanks !!
Fantastic video as always. I just won a copy of this game in a raffle, and now I feel like I understand the rules well enough to be able to jump right in!
I'm back after 2 years. Finally have this game in the mail on the way to me. Can no longer deny that this game is one of the great ones. Watching the video everything seems simple and streamlined so far, except for conflict resolution when there are ties etc. Oof... that could be better indicated on the reward cards themselves... rather than having it be a confusing rule set you must remember.
Yeah the tie rules feel like "something" when they are all explained out, but in practice I'm optimistic you'll find they aren't so clunky. Sometimes the "explaining" is more fussy than the doing. Have a great time playing Jeff!
Your videos make me want to be apart of something like this. A board game channel that teaches and inspires people to pick up and play. Love the comedy, love the enthusiasm, and above all love the personalities on this channel! You guys rock! Im gonna be just like you when im grown up!( Even though im probably older than all of you 44) Y'all hirin? 😂
I have you beat on age (47 here, Rodney). Thanks for the very kind comments on the videos, it really means a lot to know you're enjoying what we're doing!
Another fantastic how-to video from the best rules teacher ever. Based on your description of the rules, this game is the love child of Clank and Lords of Waterdeep... which just happen to be two of my favorite games of all time! Just got the game today and I can't wait to play!
Fantastic job, Rodney, and you covered several peculiarities of play really well. That's what we've come to expect from you, of course, but 'twas still an awesome job. Thank you. 👍
I think the word Legendary on the box was in reference to this video! As always Rodney fantastic break down, now I am ready for our first play tonight!
@@WatchItPlayed I know we will. Thanks for all you do Rodney and thanks for your VLOG and other content as well. Know you are very much appreciated for what you do.
This game looks like so much fun! My favorite game of all time is a deck builder, but I haven't found another game with that mechanic that I really enjoyed. Can't wait to play this!
@27:16 "Additionally -- and this is very easy to forget -- but now, any time a conflict card is revealed at the beginning of the round, that shares the name of the space where you have a control flag, you may immediately choose to move one troop from your supply, directly into the conflict." To combat this and adopt a useful mnemonic, I advise everyone to simply place one of their cubes from the supply, on the control marker itself. The presence of that weirdly placed cube is enough to suggest the need for an update during Round Start, as you can easily glance over the spaces and get reminded of this additional troop placement. (Do not replenish this cube until the conflict is resolved, so that it marks the state of acknowledgement. I.e. if there is no cube on the control marker, its absence should denote that you've used this extra ability for this round. That said, do not forget to replenish it in the Recall phase.) Frankly, the iconography regarding the troop deployment could've been better. I can't suggest how exactly, the designers were probably trying to tackle and streamline this from many angles, until they felt this was good enough, but I'm seeing that everyone has a step memorization issue when it comes to moving cubes to garrisons and/or conflict area. But other than that, this is a very neat hybrid design. I didn't like Clank! that much, but this is a much more evolved and involved, more deep, thematic and practical board game. It is also funny to me how it successfully uses some elements of an unpublished game I've been designing throughout the last year -- in other words, how we're seemingly tapping into the same unknown, without communicating to each other. It's the little details I don't fret too much about, because whoever comes first serves as a perfect case study of what could've be done better.
Your style is just perfect Rodney- patient, but not patronising. Even though I'm familiar with worker placement and deckbuilding separately, this game is rather overwhelming at first 😂 but your video made it much more approachable!
Thanks so much. Read the rules, this cleared it up a lot for me. I gotta get into deck builders more, this game answered my wish for a dominion game that let's you have influence over a board
Hi Rodney, I love your videos especially the conciseness and the structure to lead the viewer through the game. I have one question: would you consider releasing a video of your general approach to a rule book or in other words “a teach the teach” video ? Thanks for your great work easing the burden of teaching games!
Thank you for this video and many of the others I've watched to help learn or teach a board game quickly. I love Dune and was excited for this game, even more excited after I read that you had a lot of fun playing it with your friends outside. Your videos are top-notch, efficient, and well-written.
As others have said this is a fantastic tutorial video. Someone else recommended this video saying it was better than the paper instructions that came with the game and I would have to agree with that. I'll probably use your channel for other board game tutorials now.
I know it’s already been said by others, but this was such a good video. Both thorough and concise. The explanations don’t drag on, and you do a very nice job of knowing when to say, “I haven’t explained this part yet, but I’ll get to it.” Thanks for this video.
I avoid recommendations, as it really depends on the players. There are families that would enjoy this for game night and others who wouldn’t. Hopefully the video can give you a sense of the game play so you can get an idea of whether it would suit your family’s tastes or not. Cheers!
@@WatchItPlayed Have you ever seen a Deck Builder that wasn't a "hand dumper". This is the first time I've ever seen one where you have to tactically manage your hand. So nice to know this was helpful - have a great time playing!
That man could successfully explain quantum mechanics to preschoolers.
I've seen so many reviews of this game yet couldn't find it on amazon, looking forward to buying it.
There's a preorder (with optional upgrade pack) on Direwolf digital's website: www.direwolfdigital.com/news/dune-imperium-pre-order-10-29/
Where have you seen reviews?! I’ve been looking all over.
@@kylesmorgabord5592 I believe dice tower had one, or it was full playthrough, can'tremember excactly
@@kylesmorgabord5592 looks like reviews are dropping today. Guessing they meant those or previews.
My husband JUST bought me this today as a mother's day gift. Im soooo excited!
Board games make great gifts! Have fun playing!
Just bought the game and so happy Rodney has the video.!!! ❤❤
Let's team up to get this learned :)
Thanks again, Rodney. Playing this weekend and we are using this video to get a jump start on how to play.
I hope you have a great time playing Jay!
You, my dear sir, has earned yourself a the highest of likes for your endeavour!
Thank you kindly!
That sounds like a cool game! I recently read Dune, so my hype is real :D
Hope you have a great time playing!
Your videos make me want to be apart of something like this. A board game channel that teaches and inspires people to pick up and play. Love the comedy, love the enthusiasm, and above all love the personalities on this channel! You guys rock! Im gonna be just like you when im grown up!( Even though im probably older than all of you 44)
Y'all hirin? 😂
I have you beat on age (47 here, Rodney). Thanks for the very kind comments on the videos, it really means a lot to know you're enjoying what we're doing!
Man you are on fiiiire! Feels like you're dropping videos every few hours!
There's been quite a few :)
Another fantastic how-to video from the best rules teacher ever. Based on your description of the rules, this game is the love child of Clank and Lords of Waterdeep... which just happen to be two of my favorite games of all time! Just got the game today and I can't wait to play!
I hope you have a fantastic time playing Joel!
I know I’m super late lol but my wife just got me this game for the holidays and we’re so excited to try it out! Thanks for the great vids!
You're never too late to discover a great game that's new to you! Have a great time playing :)
Rodney absolutely killed it this entire video
Glad you enjoyed Brock!
Fantastic job, Rodney, and you covered several peculiarities of play really well. That's what we've come to expect from you, of course, but 'twas still an awesome job. Thank you. 👍
So glad you enjoyed!
I think the word Legendary on the box was in reference to this video! As always Rodney fantastic break down, now I am ready for our first play tonight!
Ah, very kind of you to say - I hope you all have a great time playing Steven!
@@WatchItPlayed I know we will. Thanks for all you do Rodney and thanks for your VLOG and other content as well. Know you are very much appreciated for what you do.
Mad props. Great production quality, and terrific content. This will be a huge help when I play my first game tomorrow!
I hope you had a fun time!
This game looks like so much fun! My favorite game of all time is a deck builder, but I haven't found another game with that mechanic that I really enjoyed. Can't wait to play this!
I hope you enjoy it if you get a chance to play!
best board game explainer-er on you tube. Keep it up my man.
Thank you kindly Josh!
Thank you, sir, for the great job. You are a gift of God for the gaming community, seriously.
You are a very skilled teacher and I am very grateful for your videos where you introduce me to the games in a very good way. Thank you very much!
So nice to know they've been helpful!
Your channel is my goto when deciding on a new boardgame, I always check if you have a video for it.
Then I will do my best to keep it going :)
@27:16 "Additionally -- and this is very easy to forget -- but now, any time a conflict card is revealed at the beginning of the round, that shares the name of the space where you have a control flag, you may immediately choose to move one troop from your supply, directly into the conflict."
To combat this and adopt a useful mnemonic, I advise everyone to simply place one of their cubes from the supply, on the control marker itself.
That said, do not forget to replenish it in the Recall phase.)
Frankly, the iconography regarding the troop deployment could've been better.
I received my German copy today and the first game was exactly what I expected- awesome !! What a great game,
So glad you enjoyed!
I love how well you explained this, you are definitely my go-to for board game how-to-play's!!
Thanks so much Eryk! Hope you have a great time playing!
Your style is just perfect Rodney- patient, but not patronising. Even though I'm familiar with worker placement and deckbuilding separately, this game is rather overwhelming at first 😂 but your video made it much more approachable!
So nice of you to say - have a great time playing!
Please do the other Dune game as well (because that's the one I own lmao)
Thanks so much. Read the rules, this cleared it up a lot for me. I gotta get into deck builders more, this game answered my wish for a dominion game that let's you have influence over a board
Very glad to hear you enjoyed what you saw!
Great tutorial! Really helped me understand the game quickly :) Keep up the good work!
Great to know it was helpful Josh!
Hi Rodney, I love your videos especially the conciseness and the structure to lead the viewer through the game. I have one question: would you consider releasing a video of your general approach to a rule book or in other words “a teach the teach” video ? Thanks for your great work easing the burden of teaching games!
It's something I have thought about, and if I find a good window in my production schedule to do it, I'd like to be able to.
You are such an awesome teacher. I am constantly impressed with your videos and thoroughness as well as organization of outlining the details.
Very kind of you to say Chris!
I’ve played it once already, I’m even more hyped to play it again
Have a great time!
I was gifted this game and every time I tried to read the instructions my brain turned off. This video was perfect. Thanks as always!
So glad it was helpful - have a good time playing!
Thank you for this video and many of the others I've watched to help learn or teach a board game quickly. I love Dune and was excited for this game, even more excited after I read that you had a lot of fun playing it with your friends outside. Your videos are top-notch, efficient, and well-written.
Very, VERY kind of you to say - thank you.
Thanks, Rodney! The rulebook seemed unclear on a couple points for me, but I knew you'd clear it all right up.
So glad this was helpful Ben!
Looking forward to this one. The Spice must flow.
Whosoever controls the spice controls the universe.
This is so well explained, gosh this makes it a lot easier to learn thank you!
So glad to know this was helpful - have fun playing!
As others have said this is a fantastic tutorial video. Someone else recommended this video saying it was better than the paper instructions that came with the game and I would have to agree with that. I'll probably use your channel for other board game tutorials now.
Very glad you found it helpful Nathan - I hope you have a great time playing, and enjoy sticking around for other videos :)
Amazing tutorial as usual. I just watched this as a quick refresher before my game night I'm hosting tonight. Thanks for all that you do my friend 😍
I hope you all have a great time playing tonight :)
@@WatchItPlayed always! ♥️
It’s hilarious because I recently got the game Dune which I have been playing as well as Twilight imperium. Now we have Dune: imperium.
Yes, Unfortunately, Dune and TI are legendary games whereas this game, looks mediocre.
I know it’s already been said by others, but this was such a good video. Both thorough and concise. The explanations don’t drag on, and you do a very nice job of knowing when to say, “I haven’t explained this part yet, but I’ll get to it.” Thanks for this video.
So kind of you to offer that nice feedback Ronald. Very glad you’ve been enjoying the videos!
Hey sorry could you answer my question: How many agents can you send at the agent turn? Is it one or unlimited?
Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand the question, but how agents are used, is explained in the video, so be sure to check there.
Would you recommend it to family nights?
I avoid recommendations, as it really depends on the players. There are families that would enjoy this for game night and others who wouldn’t. Hopefully the video can give you a sense of the game play so you can get an idea of whether it would suit your family’s tastes or not. Cheers!
This looks amazing. Thank you for doing this - so well explained I feel I could teach already. Long live the fighters!
Have a great time playing CJ!
@@WatchItPlayed Have you ever seen a Deck Builder that wasn't a "hand dumper". This is the first time I've ever seen one where you have to tactically manage your hand. Every other deckbuilder you just dump your hand on the table and get all the effects lol. I love the idea of playing 1 card at a time and having to CHOOSE which to save to buy cards (+get other effects)
@@kwisatzhaderach88 Try Rune Age, that's exactly why I love that game. Although sadly OOP + needs the OOP expansion as well!
Love you man :) Will always have our talk at last essen close to my heart. Keep it up 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks - hope you're doing well!
Just got the game. Ty for making the best how to play videos 😊
So glad you've been enjoying them Daniel - I really hope you enjoy the game!
Really good video, excellent explanation. I’m rubbish at explaining rules, so I can just send people to this link now rather than trying to explain in my normally whaffling way. Thanks!
Very happy to be able to assist with the teach! Have a great time playing :)
24:00 when combat smiles upon you (-:
I always dread the time I need to teach a new board game... 'cause what will I do if there is no Watch It Played to explain it!
You make rule teaching seem so easy, when we all know how hard it truely is.
Thank you soo much for your videos :)
So happy to be able to assist!
