      I don’t “feel” for them....they made a terrible business decision and still managed to become rich beyond their wildest dreams (which is why the family isn’t too bitter about it).
      But I do think Ray Kroc was a snake in the grass and am glad this movie is giving the McDonald brothers their proper due.

      Ray Kroc was an A** hole, but he helped a lot of people become rich including his own secretary. Much of the fortune of the Kroc family was given away through philanthropy by Joan Kroc and the foundation she started. The deal with the McDonald's brothers was about 30 million in today's value.

      Incorrect. Share your ideas ALWAYS, get the word out, get tips and advice because once you realise how HARD it is to get successful or startup a company, you will realise that it is so tiring and so much hard work amd effort is needed that most people give up and don't bother to steal your idea anymore because most people neither have the capacity for all that hard work, nor the passion. So relax, and go ahead and follow your passion and do what you do best.

      Let me throw something at you. How much money would they have made if they took some of that money they got and bought McDonald's stock when it went public? Well initially they could have bought the stock for 0.35 a share. It's worth $185 a share today. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to adjust for stock splits. So let's say they bought $100,000 worth initially just to be safe. That would be 285,714 shares of stock X 364(adjusting for stock splits) = approximately 103,999,896 shares X $185 = $19.2 BILLION. There is nothing that would have prevented them from doing that since it was a public company and available to anyone who wanted to invest. Granted I am not taking into account inheritance tax since they died in 1971 and 1998 respectively, but you get the idea.

      How would they have had more?
      All the franchises they sold before they met Kroc operated independently and the brothers did *zero* work in maintaining any connection, other than collecting a percentage. These restaurants sold anything on their menus. Dozens of other restaurants sprang up using a copycat method that McDonald's used. The brothers also didn't trademark their name until 1961.
      They were successful with their San Bernardino restaurant, but had absolutely *no clue* on how to grow the business, especially since they didn't seem to want to take responsibility for it.
      McDonald's would have absolutely failed without Ray Kroc.

Part of the exam prep was the history of McDonald's. I later moved to Redlands, CA in 1992. I remember visiting the site of the original McDonald's and it was emotional. I didn't know the full history before watching the film, but I knew enough to know that I was at the place where McDonald's was born. I loved this video, thank you for sharing.

    I have been a student of business my entire life… I’ve known the story from the beginning, as both my mother and my father worked for the corporation at one time. Some very valuable lessons can be taken from the story, and many of us still consider the McDonald’s brothers the founders of modern day fast food and the business models that derived from their humble beginnings. This is a story that should be told and appreciated over and over again.
    I was once told that everything has already been done, it’s what you do with it today… That makes it different. I started my small business with competition all around me, yet we continue to grow and prosper. The wheel may not be able to be reinvented, but you can still add your mark that makes it different. Take into account the ingenuity and the dream, and make your dreams a reality by putting in the work.

    • @jackson5116
      @jackson5116 5 років тому +1

      Sonneborn's genius is how Kroc "took their vision and ran with it" because he was failing miserably due to high operations cost (biggest being monthly rent for the land since he didn't own it). You own the land, you can evict those who don't adhere to the high standards, and you get monthly rent which you can use to buy more land and open more franchises. HE is the reason McDonald's grew, not Kroc who would have gone bankrupt without him.

  • @laptech8272
    @laptech8272 5 років тому +24

    Ray Kroc is the founder of the McDonald franchise system. The McDonald brothers are the founders and creators of the McDonald's fast food system. That is something that can never be taken away from the McDonald brothers no matter what anybody say's about Ray Kroc's involvement in the business.
    The same happened to Xerox. They developed a windows based system for their computer, both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates saw this system and took it one step further and as they say, the rest is history.

    • @jackson5116
      @jackson5116 5 років тому +3

      Sonneborn is more the founder of the franchise system, because until he got involved Kroc was letting the franchisee pick the land, and operate. Sonneborn came up with the idea to own the land, and franchise it out. By the way, the brothers had franchises as well (the one in the video was one of their 3 original ones), but they couldn't keep quality control standards, so they opted just to do those 3. What Sonneborn made Kroc realize is that by owning the land you force them to adhere by evicting those who don't. Plus, by owning the land you get rent payments every month which you can then use to buy more land and open more franchises. Sonneborn is the one who took McDonald's to the next level, not Kroc- Kroc fell flat on his face trying to run his own primarily due to high costs of operations (biggest being monthly rent since he didn't own the land).

    In some areas of Japan, there will be a McDonald's just across the street from another McDonald's. I also remember seeing a McDonald's at practically every train station in the Tokyo area while riding on the train. When the train stops and the doors open, I was staring at a McDonald's just across the way. It was absolutely unbelievable. To top it all off, I prefer to eat at McDonald's in Japan because I never had a bad order. It was always correct and super fresh with the best customer service ever! They would hand over your bag of McDonald's using both of their hands and bow saying, "Arigatogozaimasu!" which translates to "Thank you!" I am so glad that I had the opportunity to experience such a wonderful country. It's truly amazing to have such a wonderful feeling inside of you when you experience something like this in Japan.

      it's about 85 to 90% accurate. The movie doesn't portray Sonneborn's part, because without his real estate vision, Kroc would have fallen flat on his face. But then through out all of that pain and just as your about to go to the old ways, a little spark of hope happens, and then that spark grows bigger and bigger until it a giant flame. wrong. If it wasn't for Sonneborn you would not know McDonald's today. Why? Because Kroc was FAILING on his own until he got Sonneborn involved who convinced him he's not in the burger business, he's in the real estate business. This is going to be a lot to follow. When you own the land, you have more control over what's on it, because you don't like what they're doing, kick them out! Plus, since you own it, you'll get money from them every month in rent- they have to pay you before their business is even going! That generates more money you can use to then buy more land, and then get more franchisees. Sonneborn is the real brains to their growth, not Kroc, but he'd like you to believe he was probably the one who came up with that too, not the one who had to mortgage their house and nearly lose it because his McDonald's franchise was going bust due to high costs (one being rent for the land since he didn't own it).

    • @jackson5116

      Kroc didn't grow McDonald's any faster on his own than the brothers. It wasn't until Sonneborn got involved and made him realize he was in the real estate business not the burger business that it grew, because by owning the land you can not only evict those who you don't like what they're doing, but you get monthly rent payments from them which you can use to buy more land and open more franchises- Sonneborn is the real brains behind their mammoth growth, not Kroc, but that liar would probably have you believe he also came up with that too, not almost lost everything, because he couldn't make a dime in profits due to high costs (one of which was rent payments to the owner of the land since he didn't own the land).

    I think the movie was great. I watched it on a plane ride home in 2018 or so. I think it really does put things in perspective. And its a movie so I won't say everything is 100% accurate but I do believe Ray Kroc was as ruthless as they make him out to be.
    Just a greedy guy who wanted it all and didn't feel bad about who he hurt along the way. He did open a McDonald's near the brothers original franchise to put them out of business after he bought them out (there was no need to do that but he was ruthless), divorced various wives to get the girl he wanted and told the Padres players they stunk over a PA system during a home game of the Padres team he owned in the early 80's. So this was not the nicest guy around.
    BUT credit where it is due. McDonald's would not be what it is today without his vision and passion. McDonald's was a cute little business with some locations here and there before Kroc, after Kroc it was a major business and name brand. To say he stole it or the brothers could have been millionaires without him is not true. He paid each of them 1,000,000 + taxes paid and they lived a very comfortable life. Yes Ray wasn't the nicest man but the brothers didn't complain as they were fine. Getting one million dollars tax free to enjoy the rest of your life aint a bad thing I assure you. They didn't have his passion or energy to do what he did. So it really all worked out for all involved. Of course would have been great if Ray was a nicer person but nice guys do finish last after all.
    Personally I don't even like McDonald's food so none of this matters to me. But I always find the story interesting and I used to love the advertising growing up. Catchy songs, fun characters and slogans. I enjoyed the advertising more than the actual going there.

      Funny you should mention that.
      Keith Kramer and Matthew Burns visited the San Bernardino McDonald's and were SO impressed with it, that they took the idea back to Florida and started their own restaurant that would evolve into Burger King.
      So yes, they actually *did* steal something and never paid out. Meanwhile, Kroc approached the brothers to work tirelessly for them, and made them into millionaires...something that the brothers themselves wouldn't have been able to achieve with their San Bernardino burger shop.

    Most people feel bad for the McDonald brothers, and make Ray Crock the villain... When in reality, thanks to Ray Crock, mcdonald's is what we know today. The McDonald's brothers lost because they were too afraid. Entrepreneurs will see the story from this point of view.

    When I watched "The Founder" I had one thought: if only they would go back to their grassroots today. Drop everything and go back to a 10 item menu, half of them drinks and shakes (adjusted regionally for religious diets). But go back to a basic cheeseburger meal in about a minute. They would make a fortune, people will always gripe about the menu but the vast majority will always put money down for something quick, cheap, and hot.

    I had no idea that Ray Kroc wasn't the actual founder of McDonald's...but it also explains why McDonald's is a somewhat scummy business. They put out a memo to their own employees not to eat "too much McDonald's food" for their own health. Charming.

      it made me admire Sonneborn more, because Sonneborn got Kroc to go into the real estate business, not the burger business. Since they owned the land, they can evict those who don't follow the rules, and get monthly rent payments which can then be used to buy more land to open more franchises. Sonneborn is the real genius, not Kroc. Kroc fell flat on his face before Sonneborn got involved.

    One thing that isn't mentioned here, but was in past books, is that the $2.7 million payment made to the brothers (which was to equal $1 million for each after taxes at that time) was to be a replacement for the ongoing 0.5% royalty. Not sure which is true, but if that is the true answer, it could explain why the brothers (or at least his grandfather) was never bothered by not getting that royalty each year (knowing that he had signed it away to get the one time $1 million payment, which sounds like very little today but at the time no one could have figured how much the company would be worth in the future).

    • @jocamadad
      @jocamadad 7 років тому +6

      The royalty payment was supposed to continue after the sale but was done on a handshake deal which Kroc reneged on. From what I've read, that and the fact that Kroc stole their name and forced them to remove it from the original McDonald's restaurant and then put them out of business by opening a McDonald's just blocks away from their restaurant lead to Maurice McDonald's death because he was so distraught about it.
