I love how at the end of Tim's songs, he always has this really shocked expression, like he couldn't control what came out of his mouth the entire time, and he's as equally shocked as the audience XD
His facial expressions are half of what makes his comedy and shows so amazing. Awesome performer. It's just such a damn shame that I had never heard of him before about two weeks ago... Damn shame!
See that's not at all what I saw in that look. To me it looked more like he was surprised with the audience. Like "What are you ooo-ing at? I'm right." lol
+Richard Hollis He's probably really glad he doesn't play a wind instrument. When he snorts it doesn't translate it into a bad key. When a flutist snorts....well...that might be a bit more noticable.
actually I think that might just be his moustache... it's not that hard to keep a straight face after you've done this exact song a dozen times in rehearsal.
chronicprocrastina Finally company. I've been in here since yesterday night, my eyes feel like sandpaper. You mean to tell me you don't know how to get out either?😥
We have pianos in most train stations in my home country and every time I pass one I stop and play this tune. Since I don't sing the words people are convinced it's a classical piece and are mesmerised, meanwhile I'm internally amused by the hidden comedy of the situation.
This was in Israel, I also used to play the 'peace anthem for Israel and Palestine' which was even more ironic. I had indeed transposed them on my own and played melody and harmony simultaneously (UA-cam's function of slowing playback down had come in real handy)
I see things of bo. Both are obviously good artists. I want to see Tim. He has my sick sence of humour and has the same 1st name. 😂. He has produced shows, played in them and is a good laugh. A good bloke.
I'm just amazed at his piano playing.. Sure there's many other professional pianists that are this good or even better... But you just don't expect it in a comedy show.
Bo has more clever lyrics in general, Tim Minchin has better music composition and musical talent in general.. from what I've thought. But I always love a song from either one of them!
My 18-month old has been fighting her bedtime for the last several nights now and Tim, your words have never rung truer to me than they do at this moment. I seriously wonder how much she'd go for on ebay sometimes.
I've always liked this song. I now have a 2 week old baby girl and Tim's words ring so true... I've actually asked the midwife "when does rocking become shaking?” Apparently it’s when the head starts moving relative to the body (honestly, that was her answer!)
Umm, yeah it's not nearly that simple... Most of the kids I knew were quite frequently literally thrown around like a football (the moms often hated it but it was universal because kids often enjoy it). All were normal as they could be. What we are hypothetically discussing is an adult with a newborn shaking so violently they break ribs, tear blood vessels, even nerves & spinal tissue is injured. These injuries require enormous forces that seem to be nearly impossible to reproduce in the way suggested. Often requiring forces in the range of that from a +40km/hr car collision according to the various experts that analysis these things. We also know for a fact that the exact symptoms can be present from other things including various infections, trauma from delivery, major traumatic injuries, etc. The major diagnostic feature (occular vascular injuries) appear in many people according to research by various forensic pathologist. We actually have no way to definitely say this was caused by shaking baby syndrome. Don't misunderstand me, shaking a baby is always wrong & it's abusive; it is however quite common among exhausted new parents. Shaking any baby can certainly cause injuries, potentially even fatal injuries but the problem is we have no way to tell what is truly horrible misfortune & what is actually death from abuse. We can even expect to see instances of people who shook a baby (not remotely enough to kill them) then suffers misfortune, who will blame themselves for their baby's death & maybe imprisoned for their life. We will also see plenty of innocent people who definitely didn't abuse their kids, who'll be blamed & imprisoned for life. We will also see some definite cases of abuse but in such there's nearly always significant evidence of the abuse beyond merely Triad of symptoms that are not rare. There seems to be a considerable controversy around the subject of shaken baby syndrome & even legal cases being argued & won. So clearly it's not nearly so simple. However, that's not to in any way suggest that violently shaking any kid is right. I just remember my dad, putting me against his feet with his knees bent, back on the floor & launching me across the room into the couch or my sister or whatever, the pool was best... Either way I laughed my little head off every time! Adam
I keep coming back to watch this video, and my favorite part of this video that isn't the song itself is the cellist behind Tim trying to keep a straight face the entire time.
This song has saved my sanity more times than I can count. It's def a regularly sung song in our house. :P My boyfriend thinks I'm nuts, but our son thinks I'm hysterical. Instantly breaks the tension and gets everyone in a better mood on a sour day. You're my hero, Tim! Thanks!
I love how some people were audibly put out by the last joke. I and many of the audience seemed to think was the funniest bit. Thats what Minchin does so well.
Me too, although I think it was just at first hearing it I was worried it was a bit darker... Like he'd gotten so upset he'd actually killed the kid. Like obviously I know the whole thing is a funny joke and I LOVE it, but yeah I kind of misinterpreted that last line for a split second myself. Now I love it!
I don't have kids, the first time I heard that song and its last lines I laughed my ass off, but then came a moment of clarity: that's probably right. All the crying and sleepless nights make you sometimes want to ice your kid, but when they're finally asleep and once awhile stop breathing for few seconds (admit, that happens all the time) you start to freak out, especially when kid is less than one year old, because at this age everything can go south in an instant (because of sudden infant death syndrome among other things).
Personally the sudden infant death syndrome one did not freak me out nearly as much as the child trafficker joke - I love it when Minchin jolts people up with these nasty hints here and there to make sure they're paying attention and having second thoughts about him and his songs :)
Omg I'm so happy whenever I come across things like this that don't make me feel so alone when I struggle with getting my son to sleep! The last line was fantastic! Once your child does finally fall asleep all the anger goes away and suddenly you are filled with that love again! Just blessed that we haven't had much trouble sleeping lately cross fingers! Go tim and try to keep the "rocking" to a minimum bahahahhhahhahhahha
As a 1st time parent of a now 7 month old, I dearly love my son, he's awesome. That said this one lyric really is true, which is why it's so shockingly funny.
I firmly believe that Tim Minchin is the most lyrically talented person in the world. Also, his piano skills in the instrumental parts of this song are just amazing!
I started playing this when my newborn woke up for his 1000th feeding every night, it was the only thing that helped me get through the sleep deprivation, knowing I wasn’t the only one who at times felt like chucking him out the window just for another 2 hours of sleep 😂
I love this video. I especially like how the cello player can't help but smile as he plays.. his moustache is a dead give-away... makes me smile too, even after many playings.
I just wanna know how the orchestra can keep a straight face throughout the whole song. Watched this a few times over the years, never gets old! Love it! 😂😂😂😂
To hell with all my other regrets in life, now I only regret not discovering Tim's dark humor sooner... Thank you Tim, you earned your eternal place in the epical and lyrical legend section!
This is why I love tim. He can take such a dark subject as killing your own noisy baby and turn it into a hilarious anthem. His band is amazing at each of their instruments and Tim himself is awesome on piano. Also he's amazing at singing and can go from calm to hectic in a flash. This man needs to be even more famous god dammit.
This lullaby just explains _why_ so many lullabies have such morbid and/or absurd lyrics: It's because the parent is at the end of their rope and desperately trying to lull the screaming creature to sleep.
Make it almost all children's songs... One of the more well-known child songs in Greece talks about a ship getting lost and people resorting to cannibalizing each other to survive...
I love this song and used to play it to my daughter when she was a baby, she would instantly go quiet. Shes now 9 and i still shock her with my music choices 😂😂
LEGEND. Having listened to the album more times than i'd care to admit, it's so great to see Tim perform this again, for anyone looking forward the tour...you're in for one hell of a treat, picture that, with a 55 piece orchestra, it just brought back some fantastic memories of the Brighton gig. Truly Amazing.
I just sent this to my mother as an apology for everything I've ever done and a thank you for not letting a dingo rip off my head. Ah, Tim, you legend. Never change.
I saw Tim and the Heritage Orchestra live in Edinburgh last night and was absolutely blown away! It was a fantastic show, Thanks for a great night out Tim!
I actually use to play this when my 7yr old was a baby, when I was at my wits end and had tried every other lullaby, he'd nod right off. Just now he heard it n yelled mum I just got home from school it's not even bed time
Joosep Puusaag No. So you know who Mozart is. Mozart wrote for the piano. You never heard him play. Beth said the best PLAYER she (note personally) has HEARD. There is always some smart arse
Where do you even begin with this?!! A beautiful, enchanting love story to sing to your li’l bundle of joy and then at about 59 seconds “enough antihistamine to chill out a bull” 😂😂😂 And the rest, well he’s SAYING THE QUIET PART OUTLOUD 😂😂😂 And those runs on the piano getting faster and faster and I picture mums and dads just literally running all over the house pulling their hair out!!! Masterful, wrong on so many levels but MASTERFUL!! 😆
It's currently 1:30 AM where I live, I give a lecture tomorrow (well today) morning first hour, I still have to finish working on this presentation and my 1yo has been up and running for the last two hours ... But I get to listen to this song while I desperately try to put her to sleep so, there's that xD
My son was born in 2011 and this song was so timely and relevant when he was a baby. Here I am 11 years later still laughing my head off at this masterpiece.
I love this. it is so on cue. I can see him telling his baby that won't stick crying well I'll show you. I'm going to write a song about this and only a parent could ever understand this song
The first time ever saw Tim was this video... I keep coming back and smiling in the knowledge that this is the video that changed my life... Love you Tim. x
Oh My God, this is STILL one of my favourite clips on you tube. No matter how many times I watch it, still makes me laugh my arse off. My kid is 20 now don't know if she's watched it yet. I'm gonna make a point of showing her this next visit.
What an interesting man. He plays the piano so well with an orchestra backup and gives us songs that make us think & laugh. Who will write The Story of Min?
It’s like he went back to 1999 and into my head when I was a 21 year old single mum who had to work from 6am til 4pm on a fish farm doing hard physical work and my kid wouldn’t sleep. He can read any parents mind!
As a mom of 4, I am laughing so hard at this song🤣 It's so true! Too many sleepless nights and staying up late until they finally fall asleep. Then you or another child wakes them! Parenting can make you insane! 💜💜
Being the parent of a baby who thinks sleep is for losers really does make you violent. I remember someone wanting to see my son after he'd finally fallen asleep and I said "Okay, but if you wake him, I will rip your arms off and beat you to death with them." and they thought I was joking.
+Undine Downie My girl is 4... and this is so true... tonight my wife tells me she was in bed a couple of hours after proper 'sleep time' complaining that 'its not fair that I have to go to bed and why won't you come and take off my doll's trousers?'
This had me and all my parent friends crying with (sympathetic) laughter! It is exactly how every parent feels, at least once, in the first year of their baby's life!
I never truly understood this song until I got an adorable, but permanently screaming baby niece who I frequently babysit overnight. She’s nearly 5 and to be honest, the song still applies. Mostly how do I shush fucking baby shark. I’d give her a kidney and part of my liver (if it’s any good)… but by god why her parents bought her an iPad with ‘kid’s UA-cam’ on it is beyond me.
Im impressed the other musicians were able to keep playing so professionally. Think of the lady playing the flute! how did she maintain her composure enough to keep her mouth in the right shape?? They must have all had ear plugs or something blocking the lyric track.
I love how at the end of Tim's songs, he always has this really shocked expression, like he couldn't control what came out of his mouth the entire time, and he's as equally shocked as the audience XD
yesss, it's like "oh god, look what I just said..." lol
I've always seen his expression as more "What are you laughing at? I was serious":-)
His facial expressions are half of what makes his comedy and shows so amazing. Awesome performer. It's just such a damn shame that I had never heard of him before about two weeks ago... Damn shame!
😂 yes!
See that's not at all what I saw in that look. To me it looked more like he was surprised with the audience. Like "What are you ooo-ing at? I'm right." lol
Love the cellist over his shoulder who can't keep a straight face. Must be so tough being a back-up musician for Tim...
+Richard Hollis the background music is so serious and gentle, it would be sooo tough hahaha
+Richard Hollis He's probably really glad he doesn't play a wind instrument. When he snorts it doesn't translate it into a bad key. When a flutist snorts....well...that might be a bit more noticable.
You just know that cellist is probably a parent who has been through all of this, thought all of these things.
I can't stop watching his face!! XD
actually I think that might just be his moustache... it's not that hard to keep a straight face after you've done this exact song a dozen times in rehearsal.
Help, I'm trapped in a Tim Minchin hole and I'm worried I'm not gonna sleep tonight.

I like how the tempo and melody conveys the increasing insanity from lack of sleep.
We have pianos in most train stations in my home country and every time I pass one I stop and play this tune.
Since I don't sing the words people are convinced it's a classical piece and are mesmerised, meanwhile I'm internally amused by the hidden comedy of the situation.
Did you transpose all those chords yourself? And the while song into piano or just the bit he already has written for piano
This comment is chock full of delightfulness.
Where is it that there are pianos in train stations, oh public hero?
This was in Israel, I also used to play the 'peace anthem for Israel and Palestine' which was even more ironic. I had indeed transposed them on my own and played melody and harmony simultaneously (UA-cam's function of slowing playback down had come in real handy)

Bo has more clever lyrics in general, Tim Minchin has better music composition and musical talent in general.. from what I've thought.
But I always love a song from either one of them!
Agree with you. Tim seems more of a technical player than Bo. But I prefer Bo if I had to choose, since I find him overall more impressive.
+Morten Dahle I think Bo has a more twisted sense of humour which appeals to me but to be honest they're both equally brilliant.
+David Michel Tim has said he's not good enough to just be a straight piano player, and not funny enough to be just a comedian. So he combines them.
My 18-month old has been fighting her bedtime for the last several nights now and Tim, your words have never rung truer to me than they do at this moment.
I seriously wonder how much she'd go for on ebay sometimes.
Jason Gormally Who'd buy that merchandise after watchis this vid? xD

I love this.. for the sheer musical ability as well as the comedy.
Sick and twisted.
I LOVE IT
WHOA!!! The last sentence totally saves the day, PURE GENIUS.
BRAVO!!!
OMG, never has a truer song been sung...and I love my girls ( grown up and independent now) to distraction!
+Undine Downie My girl is 4... and this is so true... tonight my wife tells me she was in bed a couple of hours after proper 'sleep time' complaining that 'its not fair that I have to go to bed and why won't you come and take off my doll's trousers?'
Oh I LOVE This, its hysterical!
The people who 'disliked' this video clearly never had a baby...
This is one of the best and funniest songs that I have heard in years. And what a piano player!
I love how the music goes out of control as the lyrics do the same.
Oh how i wish i could of gone to see this show. GOD DAMN YOU GCSES!!!!!!!!
Im impressed the other musicians were able to keep playing so professionally. Think of the lady playing the flute! how did she maintain her composure enough to keep her mouth in the right shape?? They must have all had ear plugs or something blocking the lyric track.
TIm is so amazing. I am blown away every time I hear a new song of his.
"Honey, could you read the kids a bedtime story?"
*Reads "Go the fuck to sleep"*
"Oookay, how about you just sing them a song?"
I love this song. I always come back to watch it
the music is well sung and beautiful music but the lyrics are comical and the combination is humorous
Brilliant, many thanks. I saw this on the BBC Comedy Prom last year and loved it.
And this is the song I decide to listen to before bed
Love the guy in the background struggling to keep a straight face, I've listened to this song dozens of times and still crack up.
I very stupidly took a sip of my drink at 0.56 ... Rookie move.
Luubelaar 🤣🤣🤣
I started clapping in the end without thinking about it... brilliant show, good chap.
It feels very wrong to like this song, it's even worse to love this song. Tim! Stop confusing my morals haha! Fabulous song again!
He is just so amazing, brilliant, I can't stop watching his videos over and over...
the musicality of it verus the lyrics are hilarious!
Once again. Tim nails it!
