This game is criminally underrated. Fantastic work to both of you.
I'd say this game is more overlooked than underrated
@@rogue8533this. Its one of the highest rated ps1 games
38:40 Glad that you confirm that chain hits get more difficult to land after 8 and 15. I thought it was my imagination!
One of my all time favorites. What a great game. Wish it would get a Remake or even better a sequel/spin Off.
The first time I played Dark Souls I got an incredibly strong Vagrant Story vibe. Probably because of the environments and enemy design. It's one reason I took to the Souls series immediately.
I know this is necro but FF 12 is a spin off of Vagrant Story.
Vagrant story was dark souls before soulslikes were cool
This game is a masterpiece
Man, after watching this, I just don't know...
I believe I know this game in and out, and I DID speedrun the game, but onn NG+2 with all perfect setup - perfect weapon, perfect shield, perfect magic, perfect battle abilities, perfect break arts, very powerful armor, very poweful stats (armor, and stats, not quite perfect, but going on there), and my time was, like 20 minutes longer than yours was on first game!!! I never ever tried it, but I just don't have it in me, to even try it. the way you did - doing speedrun on the first run. You - Dragonarch, sir - are just leagues above me as a gamer.
You must have been doing something wrong.
After getting 100% map on NG+1 and farming Damascus Dread Armor set I got around 1h 15 min time at NG+2 to get in-game titles (beat the game under 2 hours + beat the game without saving).
Maybe You didn't get enough STR boni or didn't use/learn ChainsAbilities/Break Arts properly...
@@piotrtoborek2442 Well, I had been more than one year, since I've made that last comment, so I've made a considerable improvements since then - prepared better strats (I've mostly wasted time, during cube puzzles, so I needed a lot of practice on these), planned any magic usage ahead, (to not waste time on casting animations), used fairy wing during difficult jumps, spent less time menuing, and managed to improve my time to 1h 06min. The main reason did so poorly on my ealier run (aside from the aforementioned points), was that I've wanted to do no magic, no battle abilities, no break arts, all on the same run, so my option were somewhat limited.
My childhood favorite game. Bless this runner. I hope this game comes back around next year.
its so sad no one cares about vagrant story. I recently bought a psx and a copy and that is all I play on my tv at home right now.
CasualSpooner I cared about this game so much I got the blood-sin tattooed on my back. 😉
CasualSpooner it’s 2019 and this is my game of the year
Same.
It was the horrible equipment /affinity system. I don’t want to spend 50 hours tooling and retooling equipment doing all this stupid stuff . I just wanna get new equipment and bear the bosses and enemies. It was all just so stupid being like an 11 year old trying to figure it all out with no internet or guide. It kept the game fairly obscure
@@genericsavings Just looking up recent game play of VS. It was my first tattoo.
Marvelous run! Congratulations, Dragondarch
I had a friend back in the day who raved about this game. I only played it here in the past month for the first time, and yeah it's pretty good.
I have never beaten this title and I tried many times. To see it done in 2 hours is... awesome!
That's why some people call it a short game. I'm 20 hours in and only at 30% right now.
Loved this game so much, I did everything including crafting ultimate weapons (shout outs to dummy farming). Distinctly remember spending over 30 hours on my first playthrough just farming different weapons & experimenting with combining them in workshops.
FINALLY!!! Seeing a run of this makes me happy
What a great run for a really hard game, possibly the hardest at the event. Shame so few people showed up to watch it
I have yet to see a Dragondarch run that isn't a joy to watch. Great job!
It definitely helps that Vagrant Story is a fantastic game, too.
I’m 30 hours in and Dragondarch finishes it in just over 2 hours. Amazing
2:02:13 - "I call out to the skies and tremble as the brilliance of a thousand bolts blinds mine enemies, and tears their flesh asunder!"
I bought this game when it first was released. There’s so much to understand here, a very complex game. I never beat it, I grew tired of doing such little damage to enemies. Fast forward to last week. I’ve dusted it off and am determined to finish it finally!!
I started replaying it last night. Im breezing through it. Once you get the exploitative battle system, it's very easy
Dropped by because I was told this game is like Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage on the N64 by THQ / H20 back in 2001 I think more than anything its similar combat system ish but I am getting some real souls like vibes going on. Regardless, i'm loving it and appreciate the upload :)
I used to play it. I think that its time is a really good game. To me is like darksouls style.
Love your run guys. Good run and good commentary.
I agree, just needs a bit more volume in a couple of the commentors
@@blurabbit2171 Yep, my laptop has crappy speakers and I had to use headphones for these guys. Never played the game, but I loved these guys.
I highly recommend this game. It's a very unique take on how an RPG works.
I couldnt get past the first few dungeons when I used to have this game, so this is interesting to me.
Top class
I was looking for game play of Vagrant Story to see the best way to get it full speed on modern tech. I still love this game.
I like all the games on your channel and the charity, but you should really check on your volume level. I can't hear anything with a normal volume setup, I need to crank my speaker up like crazy.
Seconded
Bugs me to see it running so smoothly with NTSC/60Hz. Only got to play the PAL/50Hz version, timing chains was weird, the lag made things counterintuitive...
This game can be annoying if you don't understand the system through and through. 2 hours to beat NG1 is lightning fast.
I could never figure this game out at all. I know i am missing something great but man i need someone to hold my hand and get me started. I really want to beat this game at some point in my life.
A game I could never understand. I owned it and to this day. Still, do not understand it.
Qardo Basically, it’s all about micromanagement & risk/reward.
This game was made by good chunk of the team who did FFTactics.
As much as I love both games, they are NOT casual friendly.
If you take the time to understand the system, it’s a lot of fun.
That's a dead ass audance LOL
this is one of the brownest games ever made
You can also say it is as cool as brown can get. Ever.
Gears of Brown would like to have a word with you.
Borderlands: "Hold my skag."
The interesting thing is that being so "one color" doesn't make it ugly. On the contrary, as there's so much work put to make it as pleasant to the eyes as possible. As the youtuber thorhighheels said: "it's like an oil painting in game form".
man i used to play this game way back as a teen, Never even made it to the fourth boss. cool game though
Omg I've been banging my head against this game. I'm 18 hours in and I think I finally get it. Both the ingame manual and a strategy guide straight up lied about how to play this game.
yup. played this game religiously for years when i was young - but still cant say i understand all the details. The weapon crafting alone is a rabbit hole i spent hours with
@@TheVergile I finally beat it! I can't believe they've never done a remake or a sequel. Definitely deserves it.
in my copy of the game enemies would sometimes freeze on the spellcasting animation for a very long time (half a minute/minute maybe?). Is there any strategy you employ to avoid that or is it just purely luck based?
The magic animations are used to cover for loading times I believe, if they are lasting longer than they should, try cleaning the disc and/or use a faster drive.
can you explain to me how to make (Raging Ache) is useful skill? it dmg less than -10hp for me
I used the same spear and gem on the golem,my pp is 112 but my damage is just peanuts, im hitting 7 damage and below. Why is that? Are you playing different version of the game?
I had the same problem once and then I saw that I didn't get STR+3 in either one of the reels after killing Minotaur & Dullahan. That extra STR helps a lot for that fight.
The runner got STR+3 in the reel after killing Dullahan around the 10:30 mark.
Additionally to the STR+3 he also used Degenerate, which reduces the Golem Strength by 10%.
Not only that, Vagrant Story damage/hit-ratio depends on quite a lot of factors. To sum some of them: weapon type (blunt/slash/pierce) on both sides (yours and enemy resistance), damage type (physical/fire/water/wind/earth/light/dark) on both sides, stats (STR/AGI/INT) on both sides, and your weapon PP (phantom points, double damage if it's full) and DP (damage points, half damage if it's at 0). Another thing to notice is that weapons stats "train" over usage: for example, the more you hit a air-weak enemy, the more air element your weapon gains (conversely the same for all element/physical types). You can change an option on the game to watch stat changes as they occur, since they are quite random. You might've trained your weapon to some element from fighting the enemies around the area, and that reduced the damage to the boss itself.
To have an idea of what to use against who and on what body part, you can use the spell Analyze to see complete enemy stats on the Options screen, where you can see your stats. Instead of seeing yours, you scroll to the sides to see the enemies. Analyzed enemies show their full stats, both on enemy and on equipped items. IIRC, the first normal dragon he kills (for which he changed to the spear) is actually susceptible to slash on the tail (although is a pain to get to the tail AND deal damage, since sword range is short).
The amount of numbers and their relations can be daunting, but getting the hang of them and using the craft system (that the run doesn't even bother entering a smith shop even once) makes this game depth so nice when you start looking into it.
weapons have a list of "class modifiers" for each enemy type, meaning, as you use that weapon on a type of enemy, it will raise the damage it does to those type of enemies. then there's the weapon type of damage, diferent enemeis take more more or less damage from specific types.
so if you got a "base stat" weapon, and use it on an enemy, chances are, your damage will be really low.
as a side note, chaining is terrible for leveling weapon stats, you pretty much need to attack the enemy with a new attack for it to count.
how did he skip the opening fight against the dragon, ng+?
that is part of the intro, you can just skip the cutscene and that section entirely
RNG is off the roof with this game. On that note, did they speed run any xcom game?
Game about insane optimizations and 30 mechanics at the same time.
Comment reader mellow voice kinda creeped me out
did they change the game through updates?
i remember beating the game quite easily after release without understanding all the mechanics.
now im replaying it and really struggle even though i know a lot more about its mechanics.
Did you finish it in japanese ? The japanese version was easier
@@Sinouhe No. I Played it in 2000 on Playstation and 2019 on PC emulator
Maybe you had a better weapon set up?
its pretty normal this games isnt a fancy choice for most of players. A lot of them simply like RPG with astonishing graphics or storyline, they not good in puzzle-solving, maze type of ARPG that required analytical skill, real combat that need immediate chain reaction to response. I cleared this games back then abt 15 years ago. Not speed runner because I goes afterr map clearing. Too bad my max only 95% map. Couldnt find the last 5%.
Did you play NG+? You can't get 100% of the map on the first run.
@@naarcissus Maybe he missed some Snowfly Forest rooms or Iron Maiden B3 rooms.
I don't think You can't get over 90% without Rood Inverse.
this dude looks like a grown up "how much deditated wam to server?" kid XD
