This was awesome! The world needs more machining videos with Gerald. And, just like this. Basic documentary and witty anecdotes. The best. There are already 13 in a dozen wizars trying to "teach" whatever they think they know, but definitely not enough machinist humour. And this was it. This was the thing that was missing. Thank you all. Keep 'em coming.
Nothing beats having your engine builder for a neighbor. Its really neat watching someone that is so good at their craft. Thanks for taking the time to make this video Gerald.
This is like a Quinton Tarantino film. You watch the movie for a little while, then suddenly you jump back in time to an earlier part of the movie. These vids with Gerald are great.
Gerald you rock! Love the banter between you and Chief! Chief trying to not pay you was funny too. Jackie always got to put the dog or the cats in every video and I love it! Peace
Great content. Gerald keeps it simple and to the point and harassing chief makes it even better. I just hope he is teaching us younger generations with the knowledge and tricks to keep us moving forward
For people like me who has no idea of the process (I build homes from footer to finish), I find these videos fun, interesting, and informative. Always looking towards seeing the next video.
Awesome video and information. I can say i definitely learned something new from that short clip .. good job . That man knows what he's doing quick about it to . Once again awesome explanation.
Great information to share! Been building cars for some time now, master mechanic in auto industry for 10+ years. Just purchased a 350 block from my buddy to swap internals into, the engine did not come with the main caps, i just thought i could re-use from my other 350 i was getting the internals out of, WRONG. Crank wouldn't even spin. Had to get my machine shop to line bore it and he explained the process and i was very amazed. ALWAYS LEARNING!
Gerald you remind me of the machinist that took a 17yr old under his wing in79'and became a great friend for many years. he did all my engines till the mid90's. he retired and moved out of state. A very energetic gentlemen, still actively riding his motocross bike in retirement. RIP my friend Larry Teter also a 60's NHRA record holder
I was laughing so hard at 'We want to make sure you don't charge us for more than an hour'. Between the banter between you and chief and the technical details this was a great video.
Hey, I found another great channel to watch. I can understand what y’all are talking about easily and never thought of what y’all are encountering,so I guess that’s why I always bought a rebuilt short block and did a cam swap to match my heads. Awesome stuff Gerald
I've been following this for a long while now....Alot of ups and downs with this build. Hoping that this build here fixes everything, because of money and time working on it.
More videos Gerald.... My dad had a garage out back of the house repairing cars for customers back in the 60's to 80's. During the week after homework and on the weekends, my father had me right next to him working on cars and trucks. We never had equipment like you got. When I turned 18, I decided to get into Computer Programming cause I got tired of smelling of gasoline and oil... LOL
Like how clean and bright it is in your shop. See some of these engine shops are dark and dirty with stuff piled everywhere. Makes a guy wonder if he really wants to leave his stuff with them.
I love content like this! I know it's not very everyone but neither are the Kardashians lol... Thanks for putting this together Jackie ( I'm assuming ) and Gerald for sharing is knowledge. I know it's hard for us old timers to step out of comfort zone and or adopt the new..
Great video and thanks for sharing with us Gerald! The only question I have is, exactly where on the Harbor Freight website do I find that 90° Mill attachment!? LoL 😉
We all know you're gonna pay him whatever he wants. I hope his channel takes off. I loved all the commentary between ya'll, good stuff. Now get Jackie's car running and makes some money $$$$
Hope OSHA didn't see that balancer .. It needs an enclosure .. But being a private shop.. Not so much! Just don't get your sleeve or tie caught in it! Great shop Gerald! Love the set-up on the .. What looks like a series 1 Bridgeport mill.. Nice condition too!
Enclosed is not required Sir by anyone's code or standards. I have the same balancer and the crank isn't spinning that fast at all. You honestly have a better chance of getting hurt by improperly or carelessly using a drill press.
@@t.s.racing On the balancer.. I understand your position, however Working for General Motors DDAD, Allison Transmission and Allison Gas Turbine.. Skill Trades/ Machine Repair/Equipment Builder All spin balancers were required enclosures and certified yearly under ISO 9000 certification. With OSHA certification as well. We balanced for example the cranks for the 265H, at 6,300 hp (4,700 kW), four-stroke sixteen cylinder Locomotive diesel... Enclosures were mandatory. Much respect for your shop.. If you need way scraping and resurfacing/alignments.. Give me a shout. ✌✌
Hopefully we see more of your work. I know the 405 guys keep you pretty busy. Is Jackie teaching you a few things on editing etc? Or is Jackie your full time camera\editor and chief is now full time camera and auditor on MWSC?
Here from Chief and Jackie’s page. You are one smart cookie Gerald! Love seeing this kind of stuff! Also since Chief and Jackie won’t ask I will… do u pronounce your name like Jerald or Gerald?
That chattering on the main cap reminds me of a small block engine I got years ago that was a 4 bolt main with a steel crank that was running in a pickup truck that had less than 100k on the clock and had belonged to an old man from new. Anyway like you I thought I had gotten a good engine to build for a street rod I was building. When I disassembled and inspected the engine the pistons showed a lot of scuffing and the bores were also worn and scratched/scuffed more than I thought they should be. Additionally the oil galley were sludged up like the engine lived on nothing but Quaker State when it was Pennsylvania crude as were heads and the pan. Lastly there was blue RTV on the pan but not the timing cover or intake. All of the rod bearings looked like garbage especially on the bottom side and I had two main caps that looked like yours as well as all of the main caps were loose in the block registers. When I took the engine apart the rods and mains bolts both seemed really loose. Additionally when I mic’d the crank every bearing journal was undersized by different amounts and were all out of round differential. The end result was the block was salvageable as were the heads (which were in very good shape especially when compared to the bottom end. When I was gutting the truck I found under the seat a envelope with several invoices in it one from a oil change joint that was local to me that only was in business a few years. Along with it was a rental car invoice billed to the oil change company and a copy of invoice from a shady as F repair shop that said they rebuilt the bottom end of the engine. Lastly there was an apology letter from the oil change company as well as 10 free oil change coupons. This oil change company had a reputation for their stoned grease monkeys forgetting to tighten drain plugs, oil filters, filling the engine with oil, or stripping the drain plugs, hence the reason they went out of business. I figured the shady repair shop dropped the pan and “polished the crank” with emory paper and flint paper while in the truck slapped a set of standard bearings in and wished it well. Overtime the loose bearings and who knows if the main and rod caps were properly torqued tools it’s toll on the bottom end and I was the unlucky sob think I scored a super bargain but didn’t
Thank you for helping Jackie and Chief Gerald. Subbed!
Everyone needs a challenge now and then.

Not to mention that he's a super cool dude!
This is like a Quinton Tarantino film. You watch the movie for a little while, then suddenly you jump back in time to an earlier part of the movie. These vids with Gerald are great.
His personality balances well with Chief and Jackie
Nice! This is the kind of knowledge that makes us all a little bit less dumb. Please keep sharing. You have a great style for this kind of thing.

Back 45 or 50 years ago I had the same relationship with my machinist. Most people didn’t like working with him. He was just the best around.

What up Derald, welcome to You Tube.
Gerald is the real deal no back yard trained sliding caliper in the pocket.
