I would say that's really important, as the most "girly" and as someone high class, reading a room is crucial for her success. Her knack for also being able to identify anything fashion and material also gave her an avenue into dermatology, health and psychology. I remember one episode where she identified fake alligator skin because she was allergic and talks about the exact rashes. Good eye for detail
I agree and I’ll also add that it’s also she’s your average well educated rich person. Not too extraordinary but still intelligent. It’s like even though Shaggy is considered part of the stoners he’s still also a rich kid from old money.
For sure. For me, her skills laid in her people skills and social connections. Her network of connections is often how the crew finds mysteries to solve in the first place, and being very socially aware and connected also means she'd find inconsistencies where people may be hiding things that won't be obvious in paperwork that the crew would be investigating, too.
@@Shiny-xm4hz Shaggy shouldn't be considered the first one though...he's highly athletic, Daphne even said so in the first ever episode...he's an alternate mask for Nightwing..and in that era...he didn't need a voice changer to pull it off!
Yapping a little bit but Daphne has always meant so much to me as a kid as a very girly girl then and now I just was fascinated of everything about her and seeing you go so in depth about her sexualization and falling victim (ironically) to victim blaming, being seen as weak and vain, and how she seems to have always been held to a standard until Mystery Inc. where she was finally allowed to be JUST A GIRL 😭😭😭 another reason why Mystery Inc is the best one but another reason why I love Daphne and femininity omg omg omg
When she thought she was fat as a teen i cried. Due to the patriarchy and its toxic body images projected on all women, We beat ourselves up especially when we are young and don’t know how beautiful we are until we are older.
what i feel like so many people get wrong abt daphne, and fred tbf, is that people like daphne and fred don’t “belong” in the mystery gang. they fit more of the cool kids archetype, what are they doing hanging out with a nerd, a stoner and his dog, solving mysteries like the famous five? well, because they too, are nerds or losers in some way. it’s like a breakfast club situation a little lol. they also have a thirst for adventure, they like solving mysteries. daphne wouldn’t be part of the group in the way that she is, even if she was friends with them since childhood and was kind and not wholly shallow or superficial, if she didn’t also enjoy coming along with them. she’s just as inquisitive, just as ambitious, just as much of a “nerd” about mysteries like the rest of them.
I remember an old VHS I watched once, where they were doing a 'documentary' about the Scooby Gang, where a young Daphne states she wants to be a supermodel, and a detective. Guess which one her mother was enthusiastic about.
@@Mr110074 it wasn't right after. There was Get A Clue where she cameoed New Mysteries style with Fred and Velma from 2006-2009 while the WNSD movies continued alongside it before the Phantosaur overhaul. Though Daphne really should have been a regular on Get A Clue since her WNSD personality really would have helped in that show...and it was implied that said personality remained since she never got caught once...and that would be a good personality to keep.
I’ve ALWAYS loved daphne!!! Even in the early show, she didn’t let being made fun of knock her confidence down. One of my favorite daphne moments (can’t remember where it’s from) is when the gang is lost in the jungle or something and they start making fun of her because it seems like she’s just playing with her hair, but she’s actually trying to tell which way the wind is blowing with her hair- it’s a moment that’s always stuck with me because she is truly a shining example of how you can be girly and feminine and use those qualities to your advantage! She also doesn’t let the gang’s doubts prevent her from trying to solve an issue in her own way! She doesn’t think like any other character, she is so under appreciated!!!!
From Tino Tonitini Says Aloha: Velma Dinkley: Manu said she was just north of here, but which way is north? Daphne Blake: Easy. Fred Jones: Uh, Daphne, what are you doing? Ron Stoppable: Like She always does. Daphne Blake: I'm checking my hair. Velma Dinkley: Not to be the master of the obvious, but, Daphne, you always check your hair. Daphne Blake: No, silly. I'm seeing which way it blows. I can tell which way the wind is coming from. Since the prevailing winds are from the north here, that means north is that way. Shaggy Rogers: Wow. Lor McQuarrie: Impressive, Daphne.
Oh, I LOVE THAT! :D There are so many awesome moments. One that always stuck with me was in the loch Ness Monster movie where they're underwater, and she uses the air tank to blast the creature away from Fred and then kicks it in the head! I threw in a random clip of it. But for that era of Daphne, there are so MANY movies. I could fit it in!
@@Kartsie you can do a lot when Daph's full set is used correctly. She even bought the van first after Shaggy found it in a dump. She just lets Fred & Shaggy drive most of the time until the Mysstery Machine arrives...then it's reserved for her and Shaggy because Fred and stickshifts don't get along.
@@Kartsie WNSD era had some interesting thoughts about everyone...especially "Where's My Mummy?" and suddenly Gina Rodriguez voicing someone with a similar personality and wardrobe in Scoob makes sense. Now I'm not telling you whether Velma's the disguise for Carmen or Carmen's the disguise for Velma...you can solve that mystery yourself...if you have enough clues.
What is Daphne's Role: She's the 'face' of the team, and depending on the continuity, her family is bankrolling Mystery Inc. she usually has the most direct line to their contact for the mystery and when used correctly can get people talking to offer clues.
4:11 There was one episode in the original series where Velma was telling a scary story and Daphne said stop. Velma goes "what are you frightened of, it was just as silent movie..." then Daphne yells, "Well if the movie was silent, why cant you be!?" i always enjoyed Daphne's fire lol
A shame you didn't talk about her What's New Scooby Doo incarnation much, I think that version of her is a perfect balance. She's still a feminin girl who cares about fashion etc, but she has a more laid back friendship with the group, is part of plans and comes with suggestions, and is also incredibly resourceful and can solve any problem with stuff from her purse. She was a huge role model for me as a kid. I love how no one made fun of the feminine character and that she could be a girly girl and could also be smart, witty and a bit of a badass.
One of the main inspirations for the Scooby gang that you didn’t mention was the British book series The Famous Five, written by Enid Blyton. The first book was published in 1942, and the last was published in 1962. It was a book series, about 4 teens, 2 girls, 2 boys, and their dog going on adventures and solving mysteries. To this day it’s actually still one of the best selling children’s book series ever written.
Just looked it up! I can see the connection. :o it always hard finding older book media. Sometimes, I only find book franchise's and names when I go thrifting cause they're not talked about enough. I'll have to look into that series more. :)
@@Kartsie if you’re ever interested there’s book called Meddling Kids that came out in 2017 that’s both a love letter to that book series but also to Scooby Doo about what might’ve happened to the gang when they grew up. The writing style switches back and forth which can be jarring, but I’d highly recommend the audiobook.
Ruby and Spears claim to have not really been familiar with the Famous Five books (plus, they had five kids and a dog, not four, until just over halfway through development, since Archie had five kids and a dog)
@ that’s what they said. They could have been lying, of course. Ruby and Spears also talked about the radio show “I Love a Mystery” as a source, but much more of the DNA of their show was lifted from “old dark house” movies like, well, “The Old Dark House” and the Bob Hope version of “The Cat and the Canary.” But note that their “Mysteries Five” was five kids (three boys, two girls) and a dog, not four kids and a dog. “Mike,” their Chatsworth Osbourne Jr./Reggie proxy, was the one who got the boot when the dog’s part was made bigger.
By watching your video, I realized how Daphne also was a prototype of the final girl trope. She would usually be chased by the monster alone and would get away on her own as well
I think the martial arts in the live action Scooby-Doo movies were also a result of casting Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michele Gellar as Daphne. I mean if you hire an actress with her skills, it makes a lot of sense to use them.
omg I just noticed the detail in the video that depending on the gen you are talking about in the video, the tv changes to match the generation, that's so cool!
Okay so as a gay man and Daphne Blake stan from birth I need to say she's my icon and im disappointed you didn't mention or show her defeat the samurai during cyberchase. I feel like her ability to be the most battle ready of the groug always felt like a natural development to me. There are a lot of instances of her in the early series and later of being compassionate, forward thinking, and respected by her friends. Shaggy especially has always looked up to Daphne for her confidence, while Fred and Velma view her more as a typical teenager sees their friend. Yes she'll always reflect the time but she's a empathetic and helpful girl at the core 💜 and her outfit is Iconic. You didn't even mention the pink tights! Slay.
If the characters were aged with time, they would be 71 now, with Scooby being long gone (unless he's supernatural like Mystery Inc suggested). I think it would be interesting if they did a limited comic series where each storyline takes place in a different decade with the characters reuniting and catching up like in Zombie Island, starting in 1969 and eventually making it to today where the characters are now nearing retirement age.
Scooby Doo is god in a dog form this is canon. Gods Don't Die They just live forever even when thier moral body dies they will just give themselves a new vessel to live in. Scooby Doo love his human friends so much that he couldn't bear watching them die from old age So he uses 1% of his powers to keep them from aging and be imortal like he is and he also gives shaggy some of his powers too.
Scooby is obviously a genetically manipulated being. For goodness sake, he can speak English: dress up as a human: use complex devices; understand complex concepts and many other near human traits.
@@Superlad9494 No He is the same being in different timelimes because he is immortal so of course he would still be around for years. These types of beings can easily use mind control human beings and make us do all kinds of things against our own will. What makes you think that Scooby Doo wouldn't do the same to his favorite puppets that he calls friends? Scooby Doo is the Puppet Master and Those Four Teenagers Are Just His Puppets To Play With. Gods doesn't see morals as equal as them they see us as nothing but toys even if they do actually love us they don't love us as people they only love the idea of us and Scooby Doo is not any different that seeing humans as his pets.
i like that in more modern scooby doo shows, they always find ways to make her interesting. like someone said before in Whats New, she's more of a MacGyver character whereas in Be Cool (which in my opinion is one of the best interpretations of Daphne) she's the dysfunctional wildcard which helps show that can be just as much of a weirdo as the rest of her team.
I had a daughter 4 months ago and Daphne was on my name list because she was such an icon to me growing up, but I’m a ginger and my husband thought it would be too “on the nose” if our daughter ended up being a redhead named Daphne lol
Zombie island and Be Cool are my favorite incarnations of the character. In ZI, I love how dedicated and passionate she is about her work and In Be Cool, I love her goofball side it’s always great when female characters can be just as wacky as males
Nancy Drew's hair is officially referred to as Titian, which is a specific hair color that is a reddish golden brown named after the painter who often depicted this color in his works. This color is often conflated with Venetian hair because they have similar descriptions and origins. Venetian being a reddish golden blonde. Nancy's hair is visibly more Venetian than Titian, hence why she has always been depicted as a strawberry blonde.
YESSSS DAPHNE IS MY FAVORITE! Would like to add that she is written AMAZINGLY in the Batman and Scooby-Doo Mysteries comics, which give her a lot of her 1980s agency and leadership abilities (I even think she drives the van a few times), and just gives her a lot to do! Would defo recommend issue 6 of the first run if you aren’t keen on her a pup named Scooby-Doo characterization, as it brings her into an interesting direction! A lot of those comics are actually very Daphne centric fr. Anyways, rambling, but no, ADORE this video. You’ve clearly put your research in! She really is so much more than a pretty face and I’m glad you were able to articulate that so well in this video ^^
They also point out that since she and Velma's actresses have both voiced Diana at some point, they have the training that goes with it...and they take it a step further with Daph too....she's also voiced Dinah Laurel Lance, Dinah Drake-Lance and Selina Kyle at some point...which gives you a clue as to her martial arts training as both Cat and Canary, and she even learned from "the Number 1 Superguy" and all her skills in martial arts made Brainiac 5 make this remark "We should introduce you to Karate Kid!"- now that's quite the compliment from the Legion....it's not every day that they want to introduce somebody to the only human boy who can ever flip a Superman who wasn't holding back over twice and live...I'd like to see Bruce try that!
One thing i love is this push twords Daphne being the skill monkey. You see it in the 00s & 10s where a situation would call for Daphne to go "i was junior volunteer firfighter" and then do something completely unexpected
Very well done video! I did want to point out however that they do call her “danger prone Daphne”-quoted by Fred in episode 4 of the original series “mine your own business” when she falls into a mine shaft. However she does point out a maze of secret passages down there ect and it serves as a way to propel the story and add clues.
It's pretty amazing how much Daphne has evolved as a character throughout the various movies and tv shows in the Scooby Doo franchise! She went from being a danger prone damsel in distress, To a badass, empowered and sometimes comical woman!
When I was younger, I related more to Velma because she was the bookish tomboy one. As an adult, I have a much better appreciation for Daphne, and what her character represents. Feminine =/= weak, and the restructuring of her character really helps to show that.
as a nerdy girl, i always liked Velma more, but lately i had been feeling there was something missing in my view of Daphne, like i didn't know her at all! I'm glad this video could teach me more about her, she really is a very cool, iconic character.
I do wish you talked about the Be Cool Scooby Doo Daphne. Personally that is my favorite version of Daphne because it feels like she's her own character. I love the mixing of the MacGyver moments with the crazy ADHD fun of her character. I also love the fact that Daphne was willing to try anything and be creative. I really think the gang needed someone to be the creative person in the group. It is also the reason why I love the what's New Scooby Doo Daphne because her ingenuity was amazing.
One of the most fascinating incarnations of Daphne was in the Daphne and Velma YA book series. We meet her at a very difficult adolescent period where she's lapsed into a 'mean girl' persona, gradually making her way into the more familiar compassionate character we're familiar with.
As someone who really enjoys watching the Dobie Gillis series, I noticed that although Daphne resembles Thalia by being pretty, fashionable and the love interest for Dobie (Fred’s inspiration); her characteristics match more with the character Chatsworth Osborne Jr (a character who appeared in S2). He’s super wealthy, with high fashion standards, intelligent, knows everyone, speaks multiple languages, and is a master at judo. And although at first he’s supposed to come across as Dobie’s rival, he’s actually sweet, considerate and helpful (more so as the series progresses). ✨✨ One of the funniest things about Chatsworth is how out of touch he is when it comes to “ordinary” ways of life. Like, he doesn’t know what a bus is, and assumes everyone has servants, etc…. And tbh, it would be really funny to see a version of Daphne like that.
"And remember that this character is suppose to be a 16 year old girl." Yet, to be honest, I don't think I ever knew that till this video. Despite the villains saying "you meddling kids" all the time, I always thought they were adults and never noticed that it was sexualized or being mean. I just knew sometimes friends get a bit mad at you cause people are simply diffrent and that can come out on occasion.
It depends on the show which they are. However i think we can say that they are "teens of the 70's" most of the time with the rare "80's/90's young adults" or "60's children".
as a ginger, you really did this presentation perfectly. you touched on the stereotypes by showing the redheads who make them visible in media and i felt seen through this. i think daphne is one of the best examples of these stereotypes and you did her so much justice. i loved this video.
I love Daphne so much! One of my top favorite cartoon redheads of all time. This is a fantastic amazing retrospective. What’s New Scooby-Doo deserves a ton more attention though. Daphne has a ton of incredible moments in this series. Another iconic moment from my point of view was seeing Daphne and Velma team up in wrestling costumes to defeat the Stupendous Twist! This is one of my favorite episodes ever and I have watched it many times. Daphne Blake is amazing! She’s a dream girl! Even though you foolishly skipped most of the 2000s era, I do have to give you credit for your amazing work on this retrospective. It’s one of the deepest UA-cam projects I’ve seen recently.
this is a great video ! thank you so much for making it. i've always loved the transition of daphne's character throughout the years, and most people don't touch on 13 ghosts so the leap from the original series to the live action seems really abrupt to them! love the nancy drew connection too.
OMG great minds think alike! I'm actually working on a series right now exploring Daphne's character design and character herself by doing a cosplay for each decade she's existed using commercial patterns from each decade! This is such a fantastic exploration of just how much she evolves. What's always really stuck out to me about Daphne throughout the decades is that she's consistently the lynch pin character. Without her, Mystery Inc falls apart. Whether they characterize her as vain, logical, "danger prone" or otherwise, she's the emotional and social heart of the gang.
Oh, that's awesome! I hope you enjoy the Daphne Wardrobe I made I'm showing next time. Tag me on Instagram. I would LOVE to see how you interpret each decade. :D
It was an interesting shift in the Scooby Doo "canon" when the phenomena actually WERE extra-dimensional. It subverted Velma's NASA spokesperson role in saying, "There's no such thing as XYZ." Today there's an emerging science that supports and explains "woo," and it will continue to become more mainstream. If there's another reboot, Daphne would be the best candidate to function "mediumistically" in solving a mystery. Great work, BTW.
You are not going to mention the horror comic? That one was one of the best iterations of Daphne. Not only was she a very complex character but they did the Fred/Daphne relationship stuff both right and in a way that focused on her more without making it just about the two being together for lip service. It was believable to the character set up in the main media but went so much more deep and original in a lot of ways. It put her in the leadership role with FRED being the support (but did not downplay this nor get too on the nose as progression for marketing) yet didn't make her a Mary Sue. She had some real flaws and insecurities with earned progression throughout. I feel the one drawbakc of the 80s shows like the 13 ghosts was that they made her too flawless. She was just a perfect sassy leader most of the time and thus fine as an idol but not as a relatable being. The horror comic did an amazing job of building on that version without making her too much like the movie version where her character is just insisting she is independent more than proving it or the 80s series where she basically replaces Fred as the bland but flawless leader.
I might need to skip some parts for spoilers sake, but I'm really enjoying this! Very well put together and presented, I loved Daphne but I didn't realise the extent to her influence and growth
I love this! Daphne has always been my favorite Scooby-Doo character due to her being the character that has evolved the most in every iteration of the franchise. And I also love how you pointed out the differences between her and Velma and how in recent iterations them being portrayed as best friends despite their differences. It also kind of points out the problem with media in general always leaning to one side of women depending on the time period. It makes me wonder why we can’t just have different types of women portrayed in the content we consume. We can’t have characters like Daphne and Velma in the same vicinity without somehow putting one woman down as we pull another one up. There are so many different types of women in the world and I don’t get societies weird need to villainize particular types of women. You can have the muscular tomboyish action girl AND a feminine girly girl who likes to dress up and be interested in feminine things in the same vicinity without making it some sort of us versus them narrative. Heck, you can combine the two and create a character that represents all different sides of being a woman! But I digress… Great video and I’m glad it popped up on my feed!
Daphne from _Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!_ certainly stands out, as she's the comic relief that's surrounded by comic reliefs. Daphne is sort of like the versatile one. I noticed that Daphne's original outfit is a sort of indigo color, not purple.
It's funny you mention the color. In the next video, I'm going to explore all the dye work I did for the cosplay. And the Quest for the Perfect Purple for her, lol
@@Kartsie I really liked the lavender looks in the MOOC movies. Also there were subtle teases in the earlier shows toward Shaphne after Frephne doesn't work out on the relationships end of things.
literally stopped the video to go rewatch the 2002 movie and now am back finishing it up 😭💀 i really adored this. my love for daphne knows no bounds. as someone else said, gay men love that diva and i’m no exception 💜 i wanted to be just like her when i was a kid lol every incarnation i thought was the coolest person ever.
Thanks for this 'documentary', Kartsie. I grew up with Scooby-Do in the 70's in my tweens watching each episode every Saturday morning as they released and growing out of it as I hit puberty, at the same time the Gang were reduced to working with guest stars like Batman & Robin or Sonny & Cher. I always liked Daphne and saw parallels to Victoria Winters or Maggie Evans from "Dark Shadows" which had ended during my childhood leaving a "Monster Void" which Scooby-Do was not quite able to fill but was entertaining. I hadn't noticed the Nancy Drew angles of Her origins, but I like your thorough analysis of the actual writer's origins of the character. I picked up on the Story When my own Daughters were growing up and the Live Action films were releasing, but being unimpressed enough to follow, and not seeing my own kids gravitating towards the series, I abandoned it again. I'm glad I found this excellent focus on the Most Interesting Character of the Franchise to me, and it brings a very good conclusion to my own journey with the lovely Daphne Blake.
This made me realize why i always thought of velma as mean in the og cartoon, daphnes always been my fave so i guess i noticed the attitude towards her even if i didnt consciously realize it as a kid lol later versions of velma never gave me that vibe and i really liked her
Fred will always be my favorite character but Daphne is pretty great most of the time. I love her development over the years, especially the version of her in What's New? I think the whole cast is pretty much perfect in that show.
I'm personally a big fan of the versions of her that make her the team's muscle. Still very much a fashion forward girly girl, and sensitive to others' feelings, but if they're being chased by goons she'll be the one to tell the others "Go on ahead! I'll slow them down!" and then she karate chops, and back kicks the baddies butts all the while looking cute in a skirt or dress as she does it. But that's just me. I love unapologetic girly girls who also love and are really good at fighting.
I get so excited with every video you post and i was totally not expecting a documentary on Daphne. It is lovely to see how a cosplay project ended up being a thesis level research! Congratulations, you're doing an exceptional work and i can't wait to see Daphne's look!
Daphne in What’s New Scooby-Doo: Hilarious, feminine, creative, good with tools and makeup, skilled in close combat, has dreams and aspirations Daphne in Mystery Incorporated: has a crush on Fred And people wonder why I say Mystery Incorporated is overrated.
Incredibly well researched! Daphne is a character who’s gone through so much reinvention and evolution and it’s great seeing how your video lays it all out so clearly! I’m excited to see your cosplay!!
Previous played by. I can remember who played him seller. Michelle Geller played Daphne. I don't really think she was accident. Grown per se anyone must accidentally grow an episode in scooby man. Do I feel bad for t was a boy's? No tailor line is also a little accident prone. Herself, maybe even friendly will be more. The fashion guru, though. You all know that Shaggy and scooby are the guru of food. When there isn't a case they like and that they're not
My honest opinion is Jackie. Is one fashionable kick a** bad a** girl? You're pretty interested in idiot. Ling Delma is boring at best. But Japanese chicken kick butt anytime any day any week. And build a better trap than shack Lynn's bread.
My favorite version of Daphne is the version of her in the comic book Scooby Apocalypse. Daphne goes from her somewhat typical portrayal to becoming the leader of the Mystery Gang and becoming the leader of a group of survivors in what is essentially a zombie apocalypse. I hope someday this comic gets adapted in some way because it’s some of the best Scooby Doo media out there that people don’t know about!
This was GREAT! I would love a breakdown of the rest of the gang. And maybe the others can be a bit shorter, since you already went through a bulk of the history with Daphne already.
33:30 because like all great written and developed characters we like to see and understand their discovery and journey into their strength not just it given to them.
The ‘getting kidnapped thing’ is one of the reasons I love mystery incorporated so much. If I remember right, it only happens a few times throughout the series
Daphne is my favourite member of the gang because she always seemed the most down to earth and relatable imao. Mystery Incorporated and what's new scooby are my two favourite versions of her alone with the 200s animated movies.
Daphne has always been my favorite in large part because of how multi-faceted she is and how much she has evolved over the course of the franchise. This was a groovy video! 💜
I really appreciate your breakdown of Daphne break. I didn’t really notice that many solutions of Daphne, but I lose that she used to have wife sophisticated cares for her friends.
was always my favorite as a young boy. Seeing her be constantly underestimated was something that i appreciated because i saw past it and her being played on the live action by one of my fav actresses. I just really love what they did with her over the years and i cant wait to see what's next
the moment in one of the live action movies when she uses makeup on a lock is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Daphne. She may not be booksmart intelligent but she is smart.
Thank you 🙏🏾 so much for this masters thesis. I was honored watching it. I’m contemplating going back to school. Major: Licensed Mental Health Counseling Minor: Women’s Studies. I might sight this.
My goal is learning something every day. I watched Scooby-Doo when it was new, I saw some Doby Gillis episodes, but never connected the two. This video on Daphne taught me more about the series than I gleaned from watching the shows and a few of the live action movies.
What a wonderful video topic! Congratulations on one of the most beautiful video's on UA-cam because if you ask my opinion, Daphne Blake is up there with Marilyn Monroe! Daphne really is iconic💜
My professor didn't take seriously, for some reason, my dissertation proposal about "Scooby Doo as a microcosm of societal progression." Alas. But good on ya, instead!
I dunno if this is a weird thing to mention, but as much as the Charlie's Angels reference is unmistakable it definitely also bears a strong resemblance to Fujiko Mine's appearance in The Castle of Cagliostro, whose design also influenced April O'Neil's original design, and whose environments and climax inspired several other pieces of animation as animators at the time organized watch parties to see the movie long before it was ever translated into English. It's a small thing, but its impact on western animation for a period of time is undeniable.
Correct. HB took human sitcom popularity into both The Flintstones and Scooby Doo Where Are You. Doby Gillis was every human character, including Tuesday Weld as a redhead being Daphne. The plots are a few of the mysteries of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew...as well as the common reuse through the 60s to 70s of the plot to "Jamaca Inn". All of that is a con of costumed or contrived hauntings for some real estate scheme or smuggling (Jamaca Inn). Scooby is the typical HB animal character and is a mixture of several former characters.
Just WOW. (warning: some shameless-mentions but not for advertising reasons...) I am researching my Daphne character just now for my live podcast show tonight, as I will be dressing and trying to execute her characteristics (at 7pm if anyone wants to see my attempt). What I just stumbled on here is a masterpiece. I am so impressed with your research process, your thoroughness and just everything. Thank you. I had apprehentions playing Daphne tonight being 51 years old, but after watching this, this is EXACTLY what Daphne would encourage. And since I am a real life paranormal empath investigator, this is what lead me to finally surrendering to playing Daphne. I relate to her in so many ways, it's uncanny and her development over the years tracks. I never knew how to see her properly and without this birds eye view, I couldn't get into the soul of who she is. Wonderful wrap up at the end too, because she sounds like a well-rounded and normally developed human being--. You did a spectacular job, and now that I discovered you (and I make most of my own costumes--I have a recent show talking about all them for the last 15 years that I have created) I deeply bow to your commitment to the genre and the exploration of costuming and research. You are definitely going to be on my hot list for videos to watch. I am 100% looking forward to exploring the rest of your content.
Awe, thank you so much! I'm glad the video was able to help you on your journey with the character. It's very encouraging to hear how much my video impacted you. Well, wishes on your live stream tonight! I'll make sure to check it out. 💜💜💜
I was always of the mindset of loving the early version of Daphne. For me, Velma was that woman who could solve crimes from a literal perspective, and I felt like later versions of Daphne were trying to just make her a Strong Female Character. I enjoy her being unashamedly feminine and empathetic to others
Daphne's Coast to coast show is a direct reference to Art Bell's Coast to Coast, he was a famous Radio dj who had scripted calls on the paranormal but also some regular callers who listened and chimed in, he passed away I wanna say some ten years back I think but he was fantastic, he's the guy Alex Jones ript off and wishes he had close to the talent he had.
What I really appreciate about Mystery Incorporated Daphne is while she is definitely written to be a more realistic teen, she is competent and talented at different things too. She is probably the version of the character I could most see turning into the Mook movies version of the character. A competent 20-something woman stepping out from the shadow of her wealthy parents to do something she really wants to do. She is intelligent and talented, but still get to remain stylish and feminine and is never belittled for it. And she drags Fred along too.
In my mind Daphne is the people person, she will be able to gather clues from talking to people. Where as Velma is the physical evidence girl.
Same, id like to describe it like velma is a stem student and shes a humss student lol
When she was comforting and then helping her old self from the monster in cyber chase, she was LITERALLY protecting her inner child 🥺
@@Valentineatelier Daphne's always been my favorite, too. 😊
THISSSS
luv how u describe shaggy as a stoner
I love this comment so much I am about to cry.
Wouldn't that count as like high functioning nerd or something?
I remember an old VHS I watched once, where they were doing a 'documentary' about the Scooby Gang, where a young Daphne states she wants to be a supermodel, and a detective. Guess which one her mother was enthusiastic about.
I loved how in What’s new Scooby Doo made Daphne the MacGyver/chemist/engineer who could make anything out of what was in her purse.
That's the most fun version...also she could still kick the monster's butt too be it headband boomerangs or her hands....take your pick.
I think that was the best Daphne! Also the best Fred, that was the most human of all the versions of Fred.
Then right after Mystery Incorporated made her only personality trait: “I’m in love with Fred.”
I love how they sort of kept than in Monsters Unleashed
From Tino Tonitini Says Aloha:
Velma Dinkley: Manu said she was just north of here, but which way is north?
Ohhhhh my friend and I talk about that moment all the time, but we couldn’t remember what episode that was from! Iconic! 💅✨
Haha. I came across that one, too 🤣🤣
A shame you didn't talk about her What's New Scooby Doo incarnation much, I think that version of her is a perfect balance.
@i suppose it could just be coincidence, but imo it’d be a pretty big coincidence. they were even originally gonna call the show “Mysteries Five”
@ that’s what they said. They could have been lying, of course. Ruby and Spears also talked about the radio show “I Love a Mystery” as a source, but much more of the DNA of their show was lifted from “old dark house” movies like, well, “The Old Dark House” and the Bob Hope version of “The Cat and the Canary.”
But note that their “Mysteries Five” was five kids (three boys, two girls) and a dog, not four kids and a dog. “Mike,” their Chatsworth Osbourne Jr./Reggie proxy, was the one who got the boot when the dog’s part was made bigger.
By watching your video, I realized how Daphne also was a prototype of the final girl trope. She would usually be chased by the monster alone and would get away on her own as well
yes!!! this!!!
Really? The in-show catch phrase the rest of the gang used describing daphne was “danger-prone”
“Danger prone Daphne did it again.”
I think the martial arts in the live action Scooby-Doo movies were also a result of casting Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michele Gellar as Daphne. I mean if you hire an actress with her skills, it makes a lot of sense to use them.
There was a hint towards it in SDS, when they went to Louisiana, Daphne did a fakeout of karate to dupe a "ghost"
omg I just noticed the detail in the video that depending on the gen you are talking about in the video, the tv changes to match the generation, that's so cool!
I had to rewind cause I was listening to/watching this while ironically re dying my purple hair 💜

I find it comforting knowing that in the past 60 years t-shirts and jeans haven't gone out of style.
73 years to be precise. Marlon Brando was so cool in Streetcar Named Desire that he made the style fashionable forever.
Slay.
Her fashion is coming in the next cosplay video 👀💜🩷💚
Eww gay people 😊

@@RiveraFundora eh....Mystery Inc is an Earth-2 type deal. Regular Scooby is just regular Scooby.
Scooby is obviously a genetically manipulated being. For goodness sake, he can speak English: dress up as a human: use complex devices; understand complex concepts and many other near human traits.
@@geoffwaldon That is what he wants us to think he is. He can control our minds to trick us into thinking whatever he says is true.
I LOVE BE COOL SCOOBY DOO DAPHNE she’s so funny and has a new quirk every episode, it makes it so interesting to watch !!!! i love daphne
Daphne has ALWAYS been my favorite... I might just name my kid one day Daphne
I had a daughter 4 months ago and Daphne was on my name list because she was such an icon to me growing up, but I’m a ginger and my husband thought it would be too “on the nose” if our daughter ended up being a redhead named Daphne lol
Yes, always been my favorite!! ❤❤
Same here, my biggest crush of all female animated characters.
@@RoseBaggins Love her in the bikinis 💖
Zombie island and Be Cool are my favorite incarnations of the character. In ZI, I love how dedicated and passionate she is about her work and In Be Cool, I love her goofball side it’s always great when female characters can be just as wacky as males
you! you get it! I wish people actually watched be cool because I genuinely adored how utterly insane they let her be in that
Nancy Drew's hair is officially referred to as Titian, which is a specific hair color that is a reddish golden brown named after the painter who often depicted this color in his works.
80s Daphne is my fave. She started out as Danger Prone Daphne, became less of a klutz, then wound up an intelligent leader aka 80s Daphne.
At least she wasn't an all out 'fighter who can take care of herself' like in the live action movies.
One of the funniest things about Chatsworth is how out of touch he is when it comes to “ordinary” ways of life.
I always thought they were adults too. Early twenties.
It depends on the show which they are. However i think we can say that they are "teens of the 70's" most of the time with the rare "80's/90's young adults" or "60's children".
The two types of Daphne are 1) The Girl one and 2) "Didn't I tell you I started picking up puppet Jiujitshu? *kills a man*"
as a ginger, you really did this presentation perfectly. you touched on the stereotypes by showing the redheads who make them visible in media and i felt seen through this. i think daphne is one of the best examples of these stereotypes and you did her so much justice. i loved this video.
@@Kartsie Actually it's a youtube series! I've completed the 60s, 70s and 80s! I'm working on the 90s currently!
This is seriously one of the most surer appreciated and underrated videos on UA-cam I’ve ever seen
Daphne has always been my favorite, so I deeply appreciate this video
That's why Daphne is one of my favourite character ,🥺 You did such a great job!!
Daphne Blake was my first crush as a kid 😍 and I still adore her and Velma!

I love the detail of changing the television to fit the time period!
This was such a delightful love letter to Daphne 💜 Excellent retrospective!
2:45 Agatha Christie just spit out her tea. (Which was probably a good thing, because the Butler and his secret lover poisoned it.)
I’m gone need you to respect pup name scooby doo because those character traits became defining and most of the lore was kept in the mythology
OOOOHHH MYYYYYY GAAAAWWWDDD!!! FINALLY! an indepth video on Daphne, she's so underrated!
Daphne in What’s New Scooby-Doo: Hilarious, feminine, creative, good with tools and makeup, skilled in close combat, has dreams and aspirations
Daphne in Mystery Incorporated: has a crush on Fred
And people wonder why I say Mystery Incorporated is overrated.
Wow! What a great in-depth look at Daphne and the Scooby-Doo franchise. Loved it! Thank you so much!

My professor didn't take seriously, for some reason, my dissertation proposal about "Scooby Doo as a microcosm of societal progression."
Alas.
But good on ya, instead!
I'd be interested to see where you got your sources for this! You talk about inspiration I've never heard of for the Scooby-Doo series!
Yassss!!!!! A Nancy Drew shoutout. Are you thinking of covering Nancy Drew in the future? I would love you to do it! :D
This was such a good video had to subscribe !! And noticed omg your a small channel too ahhh I love finding fellow hidden gems 💎
Welcome to the Fashion History and Research Party 💜
One of my favorites animated Girls ever
I saw a tik tok with all her designs and I searched Scooby Doo Daphne and I am so glad I found this video.
Daphne accidentally/incidentally being the most developed and useful character is awesome and hilarious.
Very well done
Idk if you've heard this before, but you look like Rosa Diaz 😭 Love the video! Always a sucker for character analyses
Daphne's Coast to coast show is a direct reference to Art Bell's Coast to Coast, he was a famous Radio dj who had scripted calls on the paranormal but also some regular callers who listened and chimed in, he passed away I wanna say some ten years back I think but he was fantastic, he's the guy Alex Jones ript off and wishes he had close to the talent he had.
she's the most developed character of the entire scoobydoo franchise, we love u daphne blake💜
She was always my favorite character honestly and I grew up watching Scooby Doo
What I really appreciate about Mystery Incorporated Daphne is while she is definitely written to be a more realistic teen, she is competent and talented at different things too. She is probably the version of the character I could most see turning into the Mook movies version of the character. A competent 20-something woman stepping out from the shadow of her wealthy parents to do something she really wants to do. She is intelligent and talented, but still get to remain stylish and feminine and is never belittled for it. And she drags Fred along too.
Good watch, specially near this Halloween season.😮
Well done.😅
Mook studios, I'm eternally grateful
You referenced the hardy boys at one point, and I would like to point out that Shaggy is a skinny version of Chet Morton to an extent.
