35:53 Listen closely when the famous phrase is used. Al Michaels was brought in to re-record his commentary but he couldn’t reproduce the emotion of his “Do you believe in miracles ? Yes!” so the producers cleaned up the original as best they could and cross faded from the new recording to the original

Fun bit of trivia: Other than Jim Craig (Eddie Cahill) all of the actors that played team USA were hockey players. They figured it would be easier to teach hockey players how to act than to teach actors how to realistically play hockey.

ESPN did a really good documentary called "Of Miracles and Men" where they interviewed to some of the players of Russian team that lost in these Olympics. And talked about how of few of them ended up leaving the Soviet Union and came to the USA to play in the NHL.
It might be on Disney plus but if definitely on ESPN plus streaming services.

Another awesome reaction. Our 8th grade basketball team watched the USSR game at a teammates house. We were spending the night, so we got to drink beer. Lol. There wasnt a dry eye in the room because as you saw, it was more than a game. We had those stupid nuclear drills at the time where our desk was supposed to protect us being 15 miles from a primary target. Growing up win that environment made us stronger, if not too cynical, in the future world.
I had a brush with one of the players, Bill Baker, in the mid-90s. His Oral and Maxillofacial Associates was my client when I worked at Charles Schwab. I flew out and got to meet him, and I gotta say, I had to hold back tears when I shook his hand. He was a huge hero and the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He showed me his gold medal and pics that were framed. That was 17 years after the game, but it was still fresh in my mind.
Sorry I had to chg my Patreon status..life's a little rough but I'll be back. Can't keep me down forever!

One of the most inspirational movies of all time. Having lived through this period of time, I remember how down and out the country felt at the time. The country was starving for some kind of success. Another movie that has the same feel is the original "Red Dawn". That movie was actually written by people who wanted to make America feel even worse than they already did. Some conspiratory actions by the cast members and director caused the writer's plans to backfire on them. It instead spawned a wave of patriotism that lifted us out of that funk.

Brooks had a policy against facial hair on his teams, but was afraid if he tried to enforce it with Morrow, that Morrow would simply take off for the Islanders a few months early. He decided that Morrow's beard would be grandfathered in. And that's how Morrow took home a gold medal and a Stanley Cup.

I had season tickets to ND hockey games and I got to see many of the Team USA players from U of Minnesota, U of Wisconsin and Minnesota-Duluth play against the Irish over the previous 2-3 seasons.
The great ABC broadcaster Jim McKay summed it up later on when he said something along the lines of “ it’s like a group of College Football All-Stars beating the Pittsburgh Steelers; it’s that big an upset” (a few weeks earlier, the Steelers had won their 4th Super Bowl in 6 seasons).

Olympic ice hockey wouldn't adopt a group stage/knockout format until the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville.
The format here, was different. Without getting too far into the weeds, if Team USA had lost to Finland in the final game, there was a mathematical but very real possibility that they could have finished 4th, and beating the Soviets would have ended up as little more than a historical quirk.

  • @Tampahop
    @Tampahop 2 дні тому

This movie was important to me. I missed those Olympics. I was doing a patrol in the middle of the Pacific aboard a ballistic missile submarine. If we were lucky, we got one page of news a day while we were underway. For 60-70+ days, we were essentially cut off from the world. We might as well be living on the moon. Entire fashion trends came and went. Popular movies completely missed us. Being a big sci-fi fan, I managed to see the very first Star Trek movie in a little theater in Guam shortly before we went to sea. Needless to say, we didn't get much coverage of the Olympics with everything else going on in the world. Watching this movie let me know what I missed. You mentioned the history they covered at the beginning of the movie, and yes, there wasn't a lot we could feel good about. So if someone tells you that Carter was not a good president, it's probably coming from someone like me who lived through it. It was a time when feeling good about America had all been squeezed out of us.

    • @RhetoricalThrill

@@RhetoricalThrill I'm sure it's better now, but at that time, we could only send and receive when we were on the surface, and since our mission required us to hide, obviously the longer we were on the surface, the more likely we were to be found. There were times when we didn't even get that full page of news because we had to submerge early. It was aggravating to be reading the news and realize it had been cut off mid sentence. Likewise, subs allowed messages from family called "familygrams." Three times each patrol, family could send a 15-word message to a loved one. Usually, it was something like "It's a girl!" or "Billy broke his arm. He's fine." or "Merry Christmas, Bob."

Good reaction....a BIT less talking maybe....A reaction is a short snippet in time not a 4 minute long commentary....Spoke through a lot of the great moments in the film. Just an observation. I still enjoyed it.

I appreciate you putting it in a nice way, most people don’t. The thing is, I *have* to talk in order to show anything. Copyright is very touchy and generally any footage over 4 seconds gets hit, so I have to say something. The other important rule for copyright is that in order to be legal, I have to be “transformative,” so I try to make there be a reason I’m talking.
I find reactions that are just “oooh” “ahhh” “omg” to be very boring. The focus of my videos is always going to be me and what I’m saying about the film, not the film itself. I appreciate that’s not what everyone wants but it a conscious choice, both for my personal preference and copyright compliance.
I do thank you for being polite and kind in your criticism and I’m very glad you spent your time to watch my video. I hope you have a great day 😊

Pres. Carter's "Malaise" speech. May not hv bn perfect Pres., but, sometimes things gotta be said. Don't think audience appreciated it. As to '80 team, I think nation really need a win. 70s may hv bn great for music, but wasn't great for country on heels of Vietnam, Watergate, Energy Crisis, Inflation, Hostages, etc. When I was a kid, event & team were huge. Cldn't go anywhere w/o seeing a cardboard cutout advertisement of one of the players at a store, bumper stickers, posters, etc. Not long ago, US boys Hockey Team won World Jr. Championships (somewhere in Europe). Young men represented nation well, sang nat'l anthem w/pride. Hardly a peep abt 'em here. Nation really needs something to unite us & some nat'l pride right now.

My favorite part is when you tell me what's going to happen right before it happens. Maybe talk a lot less.

It’s a reaction video, hon. The talking is the point. The movie is on Disney+, go watch that instead.

I've seen the movie, and I was 20, when it happened. I like watching younger folks react to things they did not experience. You talked over some of the most important things. Maybe pause the movie and say what you're feeling, and then go back to the movie. Just a thought.

@@RhetoricalThrill I think the point they're trying to make is that there's a difference between reaction and commentary. Reactions are natural and never forced. Commentary is less about watching the video and more about critique. Commentary is best left for before and after the movie, IMHO.
Personally, I'm here for the natural reaction stuff. Commentary is interesting but it's not the star of the show.

@TrapperJohn but it is a commentary! It says so right in the description, in the tags, and I even say it in the intro. Clearly this is the way I prefer to do things, and plenty of people seem to enjoy it so I don’t see what the point is other than to be rude.
