The Soviet Red Army hockey team was touring the US and Canada in the 70s playing NHL teams, Stanley Cup Champions and All Star teams and winning. For a team of college kids to beat them was magical.
Didn’t the flyers literally bully them into almost quitting and only came back on the ice because they threatened to not pay them in 76?
They lost to Russia a week before in a blowout, then beat team Russia
Great movie also
You definitely need to react to the movie. The movie is called "Miracle" starring Kurt Russell as Coach Herb Brooks. This video leaves out one huge important thing - just a few days before the Olympics, the Soviets destroyed USA in an exhibition game.
Or you watch Miracle on Ice the good version not that trash version called miracle
Madison Square gardens 10 to 3 Herb scheduled that game
A mere 13 days before the Olympics.
@@jwn411Miracle is a great movie. And it does a really good job with references. Buzz Schneider’s own son plays him. The real team visited the set and they thought it was great. The actors had to pass a real hockey try out before they were even allowed to read. They tried to get people who resembled the players closely too in features and backgrounds. The camera use in that film is wonderful.
You guys should really react to the movie Miracle to get a full appreciation of how monumental this was.
1/2 I don't want to be a jerk here by disagreeing with the previous comment, but do not watch the Disney movie "Miracle" for realism; they didn't even have the decency to film in Lake Placid, instead in western Canada. What the movie got right were the speeches before the USSR game, and the one after period two against Finland. The telegram from the older Texan woman, "Beat those commie bastards", was true, but it didn't happen as it was dramatized in the movie.
2/2 I was in 3rd grade, my brother in 6th, but we knew what was going on, we knew about Carter pulling out of Moscow because we were on a bus together with my mother when it was announced. I knew about the 10-3 MSG loss to the Soviets We watched the game at 5:00, not on tape delay at 8:00...because we lived in Lake Placid. After Mick and my "We beat the Russians, we beat the Russians" cheer my brother and I ran into Mom's bathroom, who was soaking in a tub after working the Olympics that day, and through the window adjacent we could hear the DEBUT of "USA, USA, USA" from across Mirror Lake.
I saw that wall of telegrams before the game: we had access to almost everything.
That Monday we went to the local bookstore, and I got the autographs of Mark Johnson, Eric Strobel, and Mike Eruzione.
And Al Michaels stepped on Ken Dryden's call of, "It's over."
@@declanmueller2652bro it’s a movie. Relax.
Ok boomer@@declanmueller2652
I was really young when this happened, but I do still consider it to be the biggest sporting event of my life.
I was 16 and we watched this live. It was amazing and difficult times as well!
Mike Eruzione lived one town over from me in Winthrop Massachusetts.
I remember it and I was only 8 and not a hockey fan.
This is the last sporting event I watched with my Dad. He and mom both served in US Army during WWII. We were raised to be patriotic. We were all crying at the end of the game. Beautiful memories. 💖. At the end of the game when the US player looked up to the stands and says “where’s my Dad?” Bawling.
They still had to beat Finland after this, to win the gold.
It was an amazing time of pride as well as amazement. I was 13 years old, and I watched every game, from start to finish, even though I knew nothing about hockey.
Do you remember the MCDonald's prize thing that got you free food items for USA medals?
The absolute pride I feel when I revisit “the Miracle on ice” video is unexplainable. Now imagine what a professional American team could’ve done to them 🇺🇸
The Soviet Union's hockey team had played against NHL teams and the WHA and defeated them overwhelming in the seventies. That's why an amateur American team defeating them was considered a miracle.
When they were allowed to use pro-players in the Olympics things did change. You effectively had all star teams playing in the Olympics. 2
@@ORagnarIf you watch Miracle you will know that the NHL all stars of that time DID play them in an exhibition. They lost. There weren’t Russian players in the NHL. Technically the Russians were “Amateurs” as required by Olympic rules of the day. They were just phenomenally better. Miracle describes that the Russian style of play was beating the European and Canadian styles. Herb Brooks figured out that it wasn’t about skill to beat the Russians, it was basically necessary to run them into the ground. He specifically did NOT believe that an All Star team would work and didn’t pick the most skilled options. He scouted them all very specifically to see if they could endure the training. This is why the younger team had a shot. But the Russians (still TECHNICALLY Amateurs, playing for the government,) had players that had played together for 15 years already. They had extra experience and chemistry too. Eventually, the Russians and their style would come to the NHL.
The University hockey players were still very talented, they just didn’t have the chance to gel or had quite the skill of the Russians. But they didn’t beat them with skill. This video is describing that Herb made himself a villain through extreme training so they would join together against him. It was particularly necessary because most of the players came from around the state of Minnesota or Boston. That’s College (University for you all) hockey rivalry 101. A bunch of the players were very familiar rivals over the last few years before that team. Herb Brooks was the Coach of the University of Minnesota.
Oh for sure, you have to watch the movie, "Miracle". It tells the whole story of how this happened. Excellent movie. I watched this back in 80 when it happened, was one the most exciting sports events ever!! I remember screaming and yelling with excitement when they won!!!
Yes, you should definitely watch the movie! It’s called Miracle.
I am old. I watched it live. Still makes me cry.🇺🇸
Me too. Crying now.🥲
This is the most overlooked and by far one of the greatest moments in sports history. Although not the gold medal round, it sure felt like it...
We were watching this that evening, and even my mom was crying with joy! She was not one to show emotion. We'd spent that night at mom and dad's that night. (Our four children and we parents). It was such a tense game, and forever a triumph for the USA!
I was in highschool at the time. We had a basketball game as this was being televised . They stopped the game to let both teams and our fans know. I still to this day get tears of joy every time I see this video.
I remember when this happened. It was all that anyone talked about for weeks. It still brings tears to my eyes. ❤❤❤❤
You should ABSOLUTELY check out the movie.
Greatest line is the Soviet player saying he was jealous of the joy the American team showed after winning...that they had become such a machine they had forgotten that joy
I'm old enough to remember watching it on TV as it was happening. It was absolutely amazing.
I was a sophomore in high school (16) when this happened. Our basketball team was doing really well and I was at one of the games. They paused the basketball game near the end of the hockey game so that everyone could listen.
A friend of mine was actually there. She was a volunteer EMT so she had access to every venue.
This still gets to me. I saw it on TV back in the day. 43 years later...
It’s was the middle of the winter, I live in Green Bay WI and we were super cold this day we could hear all the houses screaming . After the game we were all in the middle of the street chanting USA and jumping up and down I was 14 years old It was AMAZING and I will never forget the pride this game gave US!!, I’m tearing up and the goosebumps are crazy
I remember when this team beat Finland, which was also a stunner, but then to beat the Russian team, it was beyond belief. It uplifted the whole country when so much seemed to be going wrong. Thanks for sharing this wonderful moment in our sports history. Blessings to you both!💕🇺🇸
You've got it backwards, the Finland game was the gold medal game played after the Miracle game.
@@chetstevensq Well, I’m old, please forgive me!😂
Love y’all but it’s tough look at that Jets shirt
lol
@@topcatwarriorTeam USA - had to beat Finland - after this game ! Put Finland on The World Map !
Absolutely love this movie! The fact that it's a true story just makes it all the better. ❤ " Do you believe in Miracles??!"
I remember watching this on TV when I was 13. I didn't know the deeper meaning people were taking from it. All I know is after it was over, my mother cried and laughed and jumped up and down for nearly an hour.
God i remember. This it was huge! I was young 11 or 12 years old . But being frrom the state of hockey ( minnesota ) with all the connections and everything . Everyone and i mean everyone was gathered around the glow of the t.v. or ears pinned to the radio call of the game and when we won the whole state and in my young eyes the whole country exploded with cheers and celebration that lifted us up for a time .
The only hockey game my dad ever watched i was young we watched it together and cheered the whole game miss ya dad
I remember this well! And Mike Eruzione, who scored the winning goal, suddently became the most famous athlete in the country.
Another thing happened that day. Dave Christian won a gold medal in hockey in 1980. His father won a gold medal in hockey in 1960 in Winnepeg.
I remember when this happened. I was in nurses training… my entire dorm watched this… we went crazy…. I hadn’t thought about this in years.
I was 10 when this happened...what a wonderful time to be alive...
They scored, they hugged
I watched it all happen live when I was a kid. Greatest memory of my life as an American.
I am 67 years old and this was the first time that I remember the now common chants of USA!
Saw it happen live. Couldn't believe it and even now, the feelings are the same. I had so much pride in that bunch of college kids and for our country. I'll never forget it and how it made me feel even more patriotic that I already was. Seeing it now brings back a whole lot of memories of how life and living was back then. I was 25, married for almost 2 years, carefree, happy, and very proud of my country, despite the awful peanut farmer President. 🇺🇲 Thanks to Herb Brooks (RIP) and ALL those others who made "The Miracle On Ice" a great part of my life. 🇺🇸
I was 12 yrs old watching it with my Dad & two older brothers. We were jumping up and down going crazy. It still gives me goosebumps and a huge smile thinking about that day!!!
Even those of us that didn't watch hockey watched that game!! It was a huge win for America when we really needed one.
I was in the Navy, stationed at the Bethesda Naval hospital when this game was played. It was played in the afternoon but televised in prime time. My friend and I were at his house watching this. I don't remember if the game was tied or the US was losing, but the lady came on with the news preview and gave away the final score. What a bummer!
I was at my High School basketball game and the stopped the game and announced that the USA beat USSR in hockey and the crowd went crazy chanting USA, USA, USA. I will never forget that moment.
I haven’t seen that footage in years, but I remember it happening when I was 9.
Only other time I remember Americans being so patriotic was after 9/11.
I am crying now.
Now that you have done the documentary story of this, you have to do the movie, Miracle (2004) starring Kurt Russel as coach Herb Brooks, it focuses more on the building of the team, the training and the preparation, but of course the climax of the film is The Game. One of my favourite hockey movies of all time.
I was born in 1980 and grew up playing and watching hockey all through my childhood. Even into the '90s, it's impossible to overstate how feared the CCCP/Russian hockey teams were. Even the Soviet/Russian players who came over to the NHL were a different breed. They were machines. Relentless on the ice. Fast, efficient, and they hit like a freight train. A bunch of American college kids beating them was David beating Goliath. It wasn't supposed to happen, and, 9 times out of 10, it probably wouldn't.
Even as kids we could feel the pride in our country after this game.
i was young barely remember it. my family is from south georgia and north florida. that is the only time i remember my whole family watching a hockey game.😁
This was such an exciting game to watch live! Truly an amazing burst of pride when the US won. This was in the medal round and we still had to beat Finland to secure gold. This was probably the most dramatic upset in sports that I’ve ever witnessed.
I was lucky enough to be in Lake Placid that night and when the news came after the game that we had won it was amazing! Unfortunately we had to leave before the gold medal game with Finland.
This game took place when Olympians were supposed to be amateurs. The Soviet team were paid players and ice hockey was their job. This same Soviet team had come to Philadelphia to play the Flyers, who were known as the "Broad Street Bullies". They caused a huge uproar when they left the ice and refused to play because they said that the Flyers played to rough.
It's hard to describe to someone who wasn't around when this occurred just how monumental of an event this was. It's the greatest sports moment I ever saw and I watch & love a lot of different sports. An interesting side note; on top of the incredible nail-biting tension of the game itself, the Soviet team had refused to allow the start time of the game to be moved to put it in primetime for American TV, but the network in the US decided to air the game during primetime anyway. So, there was a 3 he delay between the live game & the broadcast. It was really nerve-wracking to avoid having anyone tip me off to the result before I could watch the game.
I NEVER get tired of watching this!!❤❤
I will never forget that game. I was on a ski trip with my family in upstate NY. I was 15 years old. The whole mountain was in the lodge watching and the place erupted in chaos. What an incredible experience. My dad and I watched every game and he would just say “ but we will never beat the Russians “. When we did we we over the moon!
There was celebrations all over the country . I can still remember the one in my town. The huge signs and banners. Balloons of every color and size everywhere.
Highly recommend the movie, it does a great job at depicting that moment. My mom and dad remember watching this match live on tv....its amazing
Totally agree!
I remember watching this game. What a moment. It was amazing.
It's a great movie. I was only 7yrs old in 1980 & my grandpa being a huge hockey fan took me to Lake Placid. I was there for all the games including this amazing game. I had an amazing time, but honestly I didn't understand the magnitude of this game till I was older. It was an amazing memory to have.
I was 9 years old when I watched it on TV,I Cried my eyes out🎉
I remember it was tape delayed for the evening airing. We were in school and a teacher told us what happened and NO ONE believed her. When I got home and saw it finally I remember actually crying, and I hated hockey, I lived in Houston and no one followed hockey!! And I cried like a little girl with joy that we beat the Russians in anything! Then had to wait in line for gas the next day on my way to school due to the gas shortages
I remember when this happened we only had a black and white T.V. at the time and I didn't understand who the game was played but I remember the reactions of everyone and the next day at school how everyone acted like wow. Funny what you remember like for some reason I remember a Russian plan shot at an American one after telling them congratulations on the hockey win I am probably wrong or my mind just connect to two. Any way thanks for the memories
I was in Basic training during this game and our Drill Sergeants allowed us to watch it.. One of the few times we were allowed to watch TV during basic. That game was the semifinal game not the gold medal game
Hello. Nice to remember this again. I had the privilege to play on the tarmac in West Germany when the Iranian Hostages flew back to the US. A cold day in Frankfurt area. Memories. 🍻🌹❤️🤘
Hey you 3 !! 💛🌼
Hey Powell 🥰
I always remember the close up of the Soviet player kneeling actually with a smile. He simply was in awe and understood why his team lost.
As sports fans we live for these moments, the majority of the time a season ends in failure, with moments of absolute frustration, why these rare events are so meaningful to us.
The ESPN documentary from the Russian pov is also tremendous, an incredible moment in time.
Yes, you should watch Miracle. It's the big screen telling it this piece of ice hockey history
Yes.. You should check out the movie... It's GREAT!!
That was the first time I had ever watched the Olympics or Ice Hockey. We don’t get much ice in Florida, so you don’t get to experience it as a kid. 😆 I didn’t know the significance of the game at the time, but I could feel the excitement. The movie Miracle is really good.
I don't think it's clear from the video, that this game was not shown live on TV in the US. It was broadcast later on a 3 hour delay.
Oh wow! did everyone know the score before?
Lol I was in 10th grade public school they brought in tvs to let us all watch it was amazing the feeling of patriotism at the time it was like winning a war and of course it was a great battle in the Cold War
I will never forget watching this on TV. My dad came for a visit but I had to have this game on. I have watched many incredible victories in my 70 years, but none greater than this one. The Russians had just beaten the USA in an exhibition game 10-3 weeks before this game.
I watched this live when i was a kid, nobody beats the mighty Soviet Union, I’ll never forget the pure joy of our greatest moment as a nation, better than the moon landing.
Yes! Watch "Miracle" ! It's one of my absolute favorite Kurt Russell movies....... AGAIN.............Again....................Again....................................................AGAIN................Again
The comment from the Soviet player when he said they looked like the happiest people in the world we wished we were them hits hard not a lot of countries have it as good as the USA The land of the free 😢
Love it US Amateur's NCAA college players vs USSR from NHL and KHL pro's and we beat them for gold this was awesome in winter 1980 Olympics!
This was a real David vs. Goliath event. The US felt like we had the world by the tail that day.
Watch the movie! It's so patriotic! Proud to be an American!
Greatest game ever. I watched this live. The Soviets we supposed to be unbeatable. Soviet Military guys who's only job was to play hockey. US College kids brought together to form a team. Won the next game to win the Gold.
Just a week or 2 before the Olympics, these 2 teams played each other in an exhibition. Russia won 10-3!
I love the movie!!!!! Awesome and inspirational!!! This was awesome….the roar of the crowd!?!? YES! Watch the movie! You can see how and why we ended up with the team we did.
You have to check out the movie that was made about this!!!!
Moving story of the 1980 Olympic hockey team.
The movie is called "Miracle". This was in Lake Placid, NY in 1980.
The movie is really good and just a wholesome & heartwarming story. You should also show Millie, sorry if I misspelled that, some of the Joseph Vincent stuff on Aaron Rodgers since he is now the QB for the Jets. I don't know if you ever checked out something called NFL's Craziest Comeback, another sport event with announcer Al Michaels who came up with "Do You Believe In Miracles?" Gosh, the man is the best in the business.
This is one of the defining moments in my life. I remember it happening just as if it was yesterday. And it’s is not even the gold medal game. They beat Finland 2 days later. Goosebumps still 40+ years later.
There was no gold medal game. It was a round robin medal round. No semifinals, no gold medal game. Just all four teams played each other once and team with most points finished 1st.
The miracle on ice I was five years old I still remember
lol I’m almost 48
I mean the hope the crowd would’ve been big at an Olympics? Bless her heart 🤭
James this one's right up your alley
This was before the fall of the Iron Curtain, so those Russian athletes were only allowed to leave Russia for these events. They had guards watch over them so they didn't defect, making that "we wish we were them" statement more meaningful. Don't get me wrong, not everyone wanted to defect, but the fact that they didn't have the option was oppressive.
Thank for the respect
You all are killing it with the reactions today! Great video, again!!! ❤
The movie Miracle is really good. It's one of those movies that you don't even need to be a sports fan or hockey fan to enjoy.
The electricity in that arena, seemed to surge through Americans tv sets. I have never seen or experienced anything like it, since then. I think most of the match, I had my eyes closed because it was so very tense. I had never watched a hockey game before but this was so huge. College kids playing against a state sponsored professional team, that seemed undefeatable.
There is a movie called MIRACLE (2004) that is about this. Great movie! Recommend it. It has Kurt Russell playing the head coach.
The one-two punch:
1.) USA d. USSR in hockey, followed shortly by
2.) Ronald Reagan d. the hapless Jimmy Carter
Congrats on your impending baby! !!
The goalkeeper in that game ( Craig ) is one haĺf of the only brother, sister tamdum to win a gold metal in the same sport an position.
Metal singer "Dan Vasc" sings "Amazing Grace"- You Must!
That chant you always hear of "USA! USA! USA!" started in Lake Placid, NY. The Soviets were for all intents and purposes, professionals. They were all members of the Red Army and were all paid handsomely. Many were in their 30's and had been playing together for more than a decade. Our team (because this was in the era when only amateurs could play on American Olympic teams) was made up of college players, many of whom had played on very successful teams. But the Soviets had won gold every year from 1964 on. The odds of our kids beating them were astronomical. But they played their hearts out and were trained and led by the great Herb Brooks so someone must have realized we had a chance to win. I was on my parents' couch, sick with pleurisy, when I watched the game. If I hadn't been at home sick, I would have been at work and missed it.
We beat the Soviets on Friday the 22nd of February but still had to play Finland on Sunday the 24th to win the Gold Medal. We lived a couple of hours away from Lake Placid, NY at the time. My brother took some great photos from both of those games.
One of my favorite movies also
The 3 Mighty Ducks movies with Emilio Estevez were based on this game.
In the first movie, the Hawks were the soviet equivalent. In the 2nd, Iceland was the equivalent, and in the 3rd, the varsity team they played was the equivalent.
