Cannabis and alcohol bring you below consciousness and that is what most people want to do because they feel pain - both physical and mental and it kind of numbs your brain so thoughts slow down and you feel more relaxed and less inhibited. He said his teachings are about becoming more conscious, raising your conscious awareness and learning how to relax and not be tortured by your relentless thoughts. You learn to pay attention to your thoughts and recognize how much they can drain you of vital energy. Our thoughts are quite often not our friend but our most damaging enemy. We tell ourselves, unconsciously, really cruel and derogatory things out of conditioning and this useless recording is being played over and over in our heads. It is no wonder so many people are looking for mind altering substances to relax.
