Processing Scrap Lead into Usable Shot at Home

  • In this video we turn old scrap lead found at our local gun range and turn it into processed shot. We first extract the lead, melt it into ingots, drop the molten lead into shot, polish the shot, and load it up into shotshells. Anyone can do just as we have done. We used a grizzly, a mesh trap, a blower, a rake, and a shovel to uncover and sort out lead at the range. Making and dripping/dropping shot at home is easy enough for anyone to try.

    Leaf blower hack unlocked! The local shooting pit takes so long to gather lead, this just saved me a bunch of time. Thank you

    I wouldn't kick up all that dust as it's going to contain some lead and you'll certainly be breathing it. Best to wear a mask and stick to sifting with your screen box. Just my 2 cents.

    Congrats! Shot is $40/25lb bag at my range now. If it were possible to make #8 or #9 shot reliably, I might try it one day. Cheers.

    Its a cool project but for those wanting to try it, you are better off buying pre-made shot than the expense, time, effort, work you will have into making your own shot. When it comes to shotgun reloading, I dont bother with making shot but only put my attention into making my own slugs for the 12ga, 20ga, and 410 since they are inexpensive, easy, and quick to make.

    the very first shot that come out is not much good for clay or bird shot,, but it would still hurt like hell if shot in the ass with it for trespassing!,, I call that instant justice huh?,, ever tried tipping hot candle wax over the shot in a number 6 or any size shotgun sell come to that,, it bonds all the shot together and you shoot one solid lump of lead out!,, and if your any good with a gun,, you should be able to hit a gallon can at around 100 yds,, 8 out of 10 times,, plus it can and will drop a deer or wild dog or pig at close to that range as well!,, great video

    I would be careful with all that dust you’re blowing around on that berm. Did you say 4 hours!
    Listen, I’ve been down this road. When you take into consideration your time, effort, machinery, gas and waste you’re paying more than $48 per bag. If you are able to sift out a few hundred pounds of reclaimed shot, clean it really good, use a magnet to remove steel shot and just shoot. Profoundly cheaper and more efficient.

      you can make any size shot with of it,, you just adjust the flow rate,, the faster the flow of hot lead the bigger the shot size,, and the slower the smaller,, but it need to be really hot to give good shot and this one was very cool! hence the crapy shot at first

    How does this homemade shot pattern compared to commercial shot?

    • @FormulaJake
      @FormulaJake  4 роки тому +1

      We haven't tested it on paper, but I'd imagine that the shape might distort the pattern a bit. My brother used these for his practice ammo when he shot trap and skeet nationally. He could still shoot 24s or 25s with these loaded in, but he would switch to new ammo for competition just to be on the safe side.

      @@FormulaJake you make some good money converting birdshot shells to buckshot. Especially with the shortage in defensive ammo.

  • @ironleaf88

    Shot is cheap here. Target rounds are even cheaper... I melt it for rifle bullets🤣
    Then I'll take soft lead and convert the target rounds to slugs! (The big money saver).
    I have zero desire or see any reason to cast and load birdshot. It's extremely cheap as it is

    • @FormulaJake
      @FormulaJake  Рік тому +2

      Definitely makes sense to do slugs to save money. It was more about the fun and the experiment, although we did save some money considering we were shooting competitive trap and skeet at the time. We shot 400-500 shells per week at a minimum

    • @JohnDoeEagle1
      @JohnDoeEagle1 Рік тому +1

      Trap or birdshot is NOT cheap......it's $169 for two 25 pound bags anywhere you look online. Wal-Mart is hit or miss on cheap discount ammo these days as well since they went "anti-gun" and removed guns and ammo out of many of their stores. We only have a few left within a 50 mile radius that still has "some" inventory. It's nothing like it was years ago with large gun counters in sporting goods department. They took most of that all out along with their "cheap" prices as well.
