Micah also the dance of dragons and the Blackfyre rebelion, two of the greatest civil wars the seven kingdons ever saw, and are also important, since they both add much backstory to the show. Many people dont even know how the dragons where destroyed because of the targaryens arrogance during the dance, and How the Blackfyre rebelion affected the whole world because it divided the whole kingdom from years, and even after those years, there where still rebelions made in the name of house Blackfyre, until Barristan the Bold finally killed the last of the Blackfyre Male LINE.

I feel like season 8 gets a lot more hate than it deserves, I don’t like what they with Daenerys she shouldn’t have snapped like that. And johns dialogue was just simply a bit shit. He should have either taken the black or gone in search of viserys/Daenerys. Instead he served the man that dethroned the family he swore to serve and even stood by and watched as robert was smiling and happy when tywin presented the dead bodys of the children aegon and rhaenys. Barriston was a coward and an oathbreaker. Rhaegar and the other kingsguard would never have forgiven Selmy, they would have viewed him as a traitor. As Gerold hightower said "The Kingsguard does not flee." Or even Ser Arthur as he told Ned stark "Our knees do not bend easily." Selmy betrayed his oath simple as that.

He would only be considered an Oath breaker If Rhaegar or Aerys where still alive and if he accepted Robert pardon with Aerys or Rhaegar on the throne. But both where already dead, and Robert was already the New king. Barristan Said that he tought of looking for Viserys and Daenerys, but he was still a kingsguard and now Robert was his king. Robert became king by right of conquest, so Barristan automatically after being pardoned was still part of the kingsguard, and Robert was king by right of conquest, Barristan would be breaking his oath only if he really decided to abandon his post as a Kingsguard, since Viserys and Daenerys weren't any longer part of the royal familly. Yep, he could have taken the Black or refused to follow Robert, however he had a debt with Robert since Robert saved his life by not letting Roose Bolton execute him. Also, the battle of the tower of Joy happened when Robert was not yet a King, wich means that Arthur and Gerold and Oswell didn't have to deal with being a Kingsguard of the seven kingdom yet since Robert was not crowned.
JPShadow also, Barristan wasn't present when Tywinn Gave Ellia and her childs body to Robert since he was still injured after the battle of the trident. Barristan only recovered after the whole war realy ended, when Ned was already back in winterfell and Robert was already named King. Barristan was wounded by an Arrow, a spear and a sword cut, he was on bed for more than months according.the books. when he recovered Robert was already king, and all his sworn brothers where already dead except for Jaime. Barristan even say in the books that If he was present when Robert smilled to Rhaegar's dead children he could have killed him right there. even tough Arthur Dayne was Rhaegar best friend, Barristan was still one of Rhaegar's closest friends, he would never betray him and his memory. The kingsguard is swore to defend the king, if a new king come, then he can either follow him, or die following his old king, but Barristan never liked Aerys, and Robert spared his life, even after Barristan killed several of his friends. The proff is that he was only able to finally seek the Targaryen children after being dismissed of his oaths by Cersei and Joffrey.
