Fantastic video, helps me a lot. Thanks for uploading and sharing this information. And you're probably the only guy in the community being so decadent to use a TD20x as a slave module. ;)
My heart sank when you said the TD25 didnt have a percussion set... but then you said you can connect via the headphone out and mix in.. and I rejoiced. Thankyou for this extremely helpful info!
I’m a bit late I know but great tips here. I use your no.1 tip with the Alesis Strike MultiPad together with the Roland TD4. It works much better going through an extra device than using the external triggers on the SMP.
Very nice and well explained video, as a TD-3 owner I never new about the percussion sets capability. I can say that the drum splitter works for the TD-3 but only in the snare input, so as you said, is a compromise, you will need to get rid of the snare rimshot
Well I know after watching your video:) The splitter is usually made for leftover zones like a tom rim IMO, but it is cool what you got out of the TD-3.
The TD-6v does have a percussion set and midi input. It also lets you choose the percussion set midi channel so you can use a TD-3 (which only sends on channel 10) as a slave module to trigger the percussion set on the TD-6v. Great video and channel, by the way.
Vdrum Tips Yes, I have a TD-6v with a TD-3 as the slave module which I use as a back up to my main kit (TD-9 with a TD-4 as a slave module). I agree, the TD-6 is definitely a great module.
I am converting my acoustic kit to a triggered mesh-kit with Roland module and cymbal pads. This channel has really helped me learn more about Roland, noise eater platforms, mesh heads, triggers and lots more. Awesome! If there is something I would like to see in the future is a video on connecting midi out to the audio interface, and actually record drums to a pre-recorded song. Does it work well? Is there any latency issues when playing along and recording at the same time? What other options are there? //Simon from Sweden
Thanks, that means a lot to me! It does work well and it is really simple. You just use a DAW, the song on one track and the drum software in another midi track. That's it. But I am thinking about making a detailed EZD2 Setup which covers that aswell. Latency does not have to be an issue if you have either a MAC or the ASIO Driver installed.
You connected the nitro module to the aux in of your td10? Actually I have low budget nux dm210. I want to know if I can comnect a nitro module into de dm210 and by this way extend my pads in a cheap way. Also would it be better to connect both modules via usb directly to pc?
Can the Roland TD17 be connected to the Roland tm 2 with a midi out cable so I can have the sounds of the TD17 on the tm2 directly with a midi out cable?
Hello. I hope that you are still monitoring the comments. But here goes. I have a TD50 kit and after watching your video I bought a TD4 module, as splitter cables seem buggy. I have joined them via midi and made sure that the TD4 module is on channel 11 midi. Now I'm stuck. I can't see anything in the Td50 instructions about percussion sets. So how do get this to work? Thank you.
I've just gone to Yamaha directly to build me a 12 piece fully customised electric kit all the bells and whistles and ran into exact this problem. I had two options - Multiple modules and I spider web of cables or get Yamaha to build me a one off custom setup as 12 drums with rim shot + 6 - 8 mute capable cymbals exceeds anything they have in the factory. Decided to go with the one off so I can expand in the future, hook up a soundboard and have as much of a realistic response as an acoustic kit. Waiting for the bill and the heart attack that will follow shortly after
Great video thanks, I wasn't aware of the midi pass through. Just 1 thing you can actually use a drum splitter with the TD4. You can split rim/head in the setup menu. I use one on my TD4 myself after making a cable with your excellent instruction video ;)

This was a great video. I just bought Superior Drummer 3 and I didn't know the best way to connect both my TD30 and SPDX to my laptop. I would have figured it out but the video saved me some time and it actually provided me another of doing it. Option one is to connect both via USB into my laptop and option two is to use my double MIDI/USB cable into my laptop, which would use only one USB port. Thanks for the video.

Planning to hook them to a Roland TM-2, output MIDI from the TD-25 to the TM-2, and connect it back to the TD-25 by aux port). I'm having a hard time finding Gibraltar hardware (or any other brand except expensive Roland stuff) to mount the additional TM-2 module. Do you have an idea on how I could mount the TM-2 to the TD-25KV rack, so it would be placed near the main module, and it would take as little space as possible in the rack? You're a very ingenious guy. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion, if you had the time. Thanks a lot!
Why would you want to connect the TD25 midi out to the TM2 if the TM 2 has triggers connected? :) A Roland Rack Clamp is ideal, as the bigger metal rack clamps take too much space away. I would recommend to check ebay for a standard plastic Roland Rack clamp.
Thanks a lot for your answer and suggestion. "Why would you want to connect the TD25 midi out to the TM2 if the TM 2 has triggers connected?" The TD-25 module doesn't have MIDI in, only out. @@Vdrumtips1 hey man that's not a very affirmative answer to this question. Looking through the comments many people are interested in adding to their td25. Your video did not provide much information on current drum modules. Have there been any updates on this? Thanks
How do i add sounds to the new drum pads? I’m using a td-9, and I’m planning one getting either splitters, or a trigger iO, I have my td-9 connect via midi to a gear4music module acting as a slave module in order to send in midi.
If you have two modules, both connected on separate usb, won't the VST get confused by them using the same midi notes and/or channels? Or is it smart enough to differentiate between the two? I ask because i'm interested in having two modules connected to superior drummer or a DAW running it as a plugin.
Well, you do not have to send the same Midi notes. Module 1 can send the note range 1-50 and Module 2 can send 51-127. The VST would not care where the signal is coming from. It could be confused if one driver is used for 2x the same product. But if you do this via Midi cable, you can do this with as many modules as possible. There are reversed MIDI splitters available with 3 inputs and one output.
@@Vdrumtips1 What's better? Connecting 2 modules from any brand via usb to my pc directly or use a splitted midi cable to usb to my pc like your option 5 in the video? It's the same or is there a difference?
Wow great video! I have a a roland td11 and i am trying to use an alesis io trigger but the triggers for the extra pad only triggers toms and not a cymbal that i want
Great video ! Just one question, is it possible to plug a multipad like spd sx into Mix IN port of the TD 20 module to allow more pads and sounds to the kit ?
I have a TD-3, can I replace drum pads with pads from other models? Also, can I switch out the drum module with one from another model? Excellent video!
Just to be sure before i do this. Can i hook the TD17 up to the TD4 with a midi cable, then use all the TD17 sounds like this video shows which is older and does not show the TD17 at all.. Then when i use the 1/4 outputs for live recording to the board, it all will work fine (using all TD17 sounds?) I have it set up independently but the TD17 can run sampled cymbals and i have tons of nicer sounds then the TD4....So right now they are just both running with outputs to the board, would be nicer to have two board stereo slots used and not 4, etc etc... Is it this same procedure as this video shows, just with my TD17 as the module and TD4 as the slave5? And or is there a guide for this somewhere that explains it more in depth as well?? Thanks all!
#3, technically you **can** connect two different, but very similar modules, i.e. TD-11 & TD-4 are very good complementary modules. I'm currently using that option now it works great because the sounds are pretty much identical between these series.
@Backwards Rabbit I connect the modules via simple audio cables but some modules can also be connected via MIDI, triggering the instruments in the other module. Good luck!
This is big help! Tnx! Looking for a way to expand my tm6pro module , as most inputs are already split and used. I want to add some extra cymbals, I understand this demands stereo inputs, because cymbal pads are three zoned? Even If not I still need some more inputs, what is the most recommended device to add to this setup? And lastly, I have an Roland spd30 laying around, can I use this device via midi to create more inputs (connect cymbals or pads to it as no send midi info to the module) through tm6pro and finally to sd3 ? Tnx!!!
Great video, thank you for sharing all this info with us! Do you know if it's possible to connect a slave module to a Roland TD-27? If so what would be the best slave option? I've tried using splitters with two CY12's but for some reason the "rim" pad cannot be hit in unison with the digital snare. Very frustrating.
Yes, you can do it both ways. I would use the TD-9 as the master because of the VH-11 compatibility and the sounds. And as mentioned in the video, you can connect the chained modules to an interface.
TheNorwegianGhoul Well, not the best idea. The TD-4 has a cable snake. I would rather get something with jack plugs. The Alesis Trigger IO is actually great for this purpose:)
I must be honest I find drum software to be a pain, having to take a laptop to practices and gigs on top of everything else is not so cool. I use an iPad with Drums XD on my TD1 which IS enough of a pain, so I mostly just use my TD11KV. It has an extra cymbal out so that means I have 4 crashes, a ride, a China and splash - using the 2 toms rims. More than enough.
Great video. If I decide to use a slave module with my TD9 to use the percussion set, will I still be able to map the extra pads to a VST (EZ or AD for instance? Thanks a lot for your help.
Great video as usual. I have a TD15 & already have EZD2. Using option 5 would you recommend another TD15 module? Will I be able to use the newly expanded kit without running through EZD2 (I usually don't hook up EZD2 when I use the kit to practice) Thanks
Vdrum Tips is the cable just a standard USB / MIDI IN OUT cable or slightly different? Could you run 2 x TD15 into mixer for practice then mixer to PC for EZD2? Sorry I'm still learning and don't want to buy useless equipment and get stuck with it. Maybe I should just save for a TD30 or MIMIC haha
Great video! I have been actually using the first solution with a TD-12 as master ans an Alesis Trigger IO assSlave that I use with XLN Audio Addictive Drums. Keep up with the great work!
You can use as many modules as you want. But to be honest, I would rather get 2 big modules than 3 small ones. The more gear, the more failure potential.
Thanks for this. But if I want to use just VST like Addictive Drums, and if my Master module have Midi in and out, and a slave expansion module have Midi out (like Alesis Trigger I/O), I could connect the two modules with Midi cable, connect the Midi out of my master to an external audio interface, and connect this to the PC via USB. This configuration could be OK?
Thanks for this video and info. So, I have a TD9 V2. Which module would be my best bet for using in conjunction with it? I use Addictive Drums VST exclusively and never use the onboard sounds. I'd like to add about three more pads and three or four more cymbals. Should I just look for a used TD-20 and slave them together? Thanks again.
True. I'd like to upgrade the main module a bit though and have access to positional sensing. The TD9 is a good module but I feel like it's a little dated. For instance, I don't get any response from MIDI values lower than 6 so very quiet playing simply doesn't trigger at all. This isn't an issue using the internal sounds but it IS an issue when triggering addictive drums. I've never been able to figure out why this happens. I hopeful that a more modern, robust module will help to iron out some of these little inconsistencies. A TD20 IS expensive. Perhaps a TD12 would be more cost effective.
Very helpful video, thanks! I see that TD-9 beats TD-11 functionally. But what to you think about TD-9 compared to TD-11 sound-wise? Which module produces more realistic and rich drum sounds?
Gleb Novikov The sounds of TD-11 and 9 are almost identical. The TD-11 has this “Realistic trigger function” but there is not really a difference. I would always fo for the TD-9. It is a much better deal.
Thank you! Is it true that both modules have two extra inputs and you can add two fully functional extra pads or cymbals without need to use second module or splitters? So the 5 ways described in the video are needed only if you want to connect more than two extra pads?
Can I chain a td-11 with a dm7 or dm10? both have midi in, making the td-11 slave and dm7/10 master. I couldn't find anywhere if this would work. thank you! love your videos
In the video you use the TD-4 to connect to the TD-9 through the percussion set. I presume the TD-9 can also be used as a slave to another TD-9 (master). Is it right? Many thanks!
I have a urgent question. For the 4th example where you said I can use 2 drum modules for superior drummer. Do I have connect the second module through a MIDI interface for it to work or can I use my TD25 and TM1 modules straight USB to my MacBook?
Inquiry I have a 6kv TD module has Midi in and Midi out connections it is possible to insert record Kicks, drums, tones, cimbals sounds through plugins and connect my sets from my PC. Thanks!
I have a TD-20X that I love and an opportunity to pick up a TD-6v cheap. Is it possible to MIDI the 6 into the 20 for more trigger inputs and use the 20 sounds? Thanks
I own a Roland TD-3, I'd like to try to use percussion sets with it to expand the kit - would it work if I used the TD-3 as the master and the Alesis Trigger IO as the slave?
I was wondering the same thing. He said the TD3 cant output to the right midi channel to be the slave unit, but doesnt mention if it can be the master module. Did you end up finding a solution?
Great video! I can recommend the TD9 with a TD4 extension via midi. Always worked flawlessly for me. It's a shame Roland hasn't built a midi-in port into the TD25...
I know. I just purchased a TD-25kv kit, only to learn that I am not able to split the channels. Guess I'll be selling that module and looking for something else. :-(
Hi, I am struggling to get a good result with a splitter cable on the Roland TD50k; for the head I'm using a CY20 and for the rim I'm using the BT1 trigger. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.
Splitter cables are always a compromise and not easy to adjust if you do not fully uderstand the parameters. I would suggest to expand your drumset with a slave module. A splitter cable with a TD-50 is like a race car with cartwheels.

Will this work by connecting a crimson module and strike module (crimson ----> 5 PIN MIDI -----> Alesis Strike Module) using the slave technique?
Good luck!
@Backwards Rabbit and, with a decent mixer, any number of modules can be combined together 😃
I figured it out! And it works great. If anyone's interested here's a tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/WI9jQRKtQTA/v-deo.html
would it be possible to connect the td8 to td9 and then the td9 to a audio interface?
Yes, you can do it both ways. I would use the TD-9 as the master because of the VH-11 compatibility and the sounds. And as mentioned in the video, you can connect the chained modules to an interface.
will all the inputs on the slave work? im thinking to get a td8 or alesis i/o ,ddrum ect.
most of them. The hihat control not.
Looks like i will go for a td4 connected to a td9
I would like to know if Cymbal OP-TD1C fits in the tube TD-11KV.
My friend, I'm from Brazil, could you send me the link or guide me on how to expand more Pads on the Roland TD25 module. Thank you.
Great video. If I decide to use a slave module with my TD9 to use the percussion set, will I still be able to map the extra pads to a VST (EZ or AD for instance? Thanks a lot for your help.
Victor Bastos Thanks! Yes you will, you can use the full chain with EZD2, as mentioned in the video. The TD-9 routes the additional Midi notes trough.
Hey! Awesome video! So I own a TD-17 and a TD-6. Could I connect those by using Midi? The 17 being the main brain and the 6 being the slave module?
You can connect the TD-17 as a slave to the TD-6 as master. But that wouldn't be ideal. Who wants the TD-6 sounds? :D
I only have one question. Ezdrummer only has so many drum etc on its kits. Wouldn't you max it out and run put of pieces? How are you getting more?
Josh Keeton You simply buy EZX ad ons.
@@Vdrumtips1 yes I have progressive kit. One of biggest as far as cymbals. I guess if I need even more percussion etc I would need superior drums
Great video as usual.
I have a TD15 & already have EZD2. Using option 5 would you recommend another TD15 module? Will I be able to use the newly expanded kit without running through EZD2 (I usually don't hook up EZD2 when I use the kit to practice)
Thanks
anthony b just do method 3 and 5 at the same time, so you can use them for practice withouth pc.
No, you would connect them directly to the pc for ezdrummer. Audio cables do not transfer midi signals.
Vdrum Tips is the midi cable just a standard cable same as the one Roland used to manufacture?
Midi Cable has a Midi connector on each side, the Roland cable is a Midi-USB adapter
So if I had SD3 for instance, could I use a Tm2 to trigger the bassdrum & a TD9 for the rest of the kit?
yes
Great video! I have been actually using the first solution with a TD-12 as master ans an Alesis Trigger IO assSlave that I use with XLN Audio Addictive Drums.
Keep up with the great work!
Cool, so you are a pro already and know about the hacks:D
Vdrum Tips I'm far from a pro, lol. There's always something to learn and your channel helped a lot.
Hi,, can i expanded my TD-12 with a TD-11 , i want to have more pads and cymbals...Thank you!!
Can i have 3 modules connected together? Or 2 is the limit?
You can use as many modules as you want. But to be honest, I would rather get 2 big modules than 3 small ones. The more gear, the more failure potential.
Thank you! :)
Well you can add a TMC-6 or an Alesis Trigger IO. This will be cheaper than a TD-20.
Looks like TD-50 did not include percussion sets feature. Last module that has percussion sets is TD-30.
Can I chain a td-11 with a dm7 or dm10? both have midi in, making the td-11 slave and dm7/10 master. I couldn't find anywhere if this would work. thank you! love your videos
Not sure how the Alesis Modules work
In the video you use the TD-4 to connect to the TD-9 through the percussion set. I presume the TD-9 can also be used as a slave to another TD-9 (master). Is it right? Many thanks!
Hy hello great video....i have an roland td8....can i use as the second an alesisdm10????
Thanks for the help and sorry for my english....
Yes you can. The TD-8 has a percussion set. Deutsch geht auch:) Wenn du mehr Fragen hast, gerne eine Email an info@v-drumtips.com schreiben.
I have a urgent question. For the 4th example where you said I can use 2 drum modules for superior drummer. Do I have connect the second module through a MIDI interface for it to work or can I use my TD25 and TM1 modules straight USB to my MacBook?
How can I check if my td-27 has a percussion set?
Inquiry I have a 6kv TD module has Midi in and Midi out connections it is possible to insert record Kicks, drums, tones, cimbals sounds through plugins and connect my sets from my PC. Thanks!
I have a TD-20X that I love and an opportunity to pick up a TD-6v cheap. Is it possible to MIDI the 6 into the 20 for more trigger inputs and use the 20 sounds? Thanks
If the TD-6 can be set to MIDI channel 11, yes. Check the user manual by googling it before you buy.
Thanks... :)
Does the midi input work with td50?
Vdrum Tips can I use this method to add more cymbals? I tried the splitters and they are buggy
I have a behringer xd8usb, how can I add pads and cymbals to it?
1. Does it work with the 17?
I have splitters on my 17 . it has a midi in.. so you can do some midi inputs also..
You bought them or made them yourself? @@chrisr5364
Thx
Great video! I can recommend the TD9 with a TD4 extension via midi. Always worked flawlessly for me. It's a shame Roland hasn't built a midi-in port into the TD25...
You are totally right! I was so disappointed about Roland not implementing this feature into the TD-25.
Maybe the td25 can receive midi in via usb ?
A splitter cable with a TD-50 is like a race car with cartwheels.
i just got a roland td k1 and i have 3 old simmons pads and an yamaha tmx module any ideas? well i could conect separatlly bt than i dont have same sound on fones)
ok i think i get it 2 modules conected to pc and to ez drumer?
Can i connect an alesis dm6 with a yamaha dd75?
Hi! Thanks for the great video! I will get a yamaha dtx 700k from ebay next week . Is it possible to use the first method with that module? I'd get an alesis trigger io or something for it.
Alex Karl Not sure, I have never used such a module that intense. Check the user manual.
I have a td11 module and an alesis dm5 module. Would I be able to plug them both directly into my pc so I can trigger superior drummer and add more drum pads? or am I better off getting a second roland cheaper module like a td6 or something
Depends if the PC and the module drivers allow that. Just try it out.
Vdrum Tips I don't have a midi to usb adapter that's why I wanted to make sure first. Thanks for replying
Have you guys tried to connect an extra module / trigger interface to Yamaha DTX module and Alesis module through MIDI cable like how you do that in Roland V Drum Module? Does that work?
Also, can I make use of the usb port (same as the printer port) to connect an extra module?
question so if I use the Y splitter for my bass drum pads ...I I will get the same sound on both pads ... which is ideal ( for bass drum sound) using only one port correct
Can My Roland TD11 Can Add two Pads one is Cy-12 as China another pad T3 Floor tom
Yes, with a drumsplitter.
hi.. hope you could help me. does the td17 module works to be a master then td4 is the slave? ive been having trouble expanding my td17 kit, bought a regular y splitter and it seems ok but I tried to assign the rim signal into a different sounds but unfortanetly the head sounds comes along with it..
Rick Manlunas Non of them can be master or slave. Also, you might go to drum splitter.com and check there.
