I was born in 71, so I was a kid in that decade, but a teen in the 80's and I loved it being that age, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much being older. Being 52 now, it is hands down my favorite decade, and while I despised school, I loved everything else(movies, malls, fashion, music, arcades, etc.). It was indeed an amazing time.
Right there with ya man! Born in 72….hated school but wouldn’t trade the culture of the 80’s for anything.
Born in '69 and watched this film on a first date at 15.
Another 71 baby here! Totally agree. It's a joy to watch reactors discover these classics. Great reaction!!!👏🏾
Same 71 here, i wouldn't wish to have grown up any other time.
I was born in 76. And yeah you speaking facts.
Beverly Hills Cop had one of the best soundtrack from the 80’s and that’s saying a lot. Since you enjoyed the first one the sequel is going to be a supreme treat
"Axel F" is great theme music. I remember a carnival attraction that used it. They played it on a loop all summer. The workers there had a crazed look in their eyes.🥺
2nd only to Footloose sndtrk.
Yep, that was Johnathan Banks, the actor who plays Mike Ermantrout in Breaking Bad.
Also, he was an orderly at the psychiatric hospital in "The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension".
He is a cop in 48 HRS, another Eddie Murphy film.
And commissioner Gordon in arkham knight.
10:20 YES. It's Balki from Perfect Strangers. Bronson Pinchot. Most reactors don't know or mention that. Fun Fact: It was this role that got the show green lit and originally Louie Anderson was suppose to be in that role as 'Cousin Louie'. They saw his performance in Beverly Hills Cop and felt he could bring more life to the 'cousin' character.
That's when you know you're old 🤣 Ayy I wonder if she knows Family Matters was a Perfect Strangers spin-off!
Most people don't recognize him because they never saw that show because they weren't alive yet!...lol I'm impressed she has seen Perfect Strangers!
Because most reactors don't know shit.
Yes it was common back in the 40s through the 80s in many parts of the country. Michigan State Troopers still use the single red "cherry-top" light on their vehicles, albeit a slightly lower profile now.
Some Reagions called them Gum-Balls and the double light were called Gumball Machines......
Something that was lost with the 80s... having a signature hit song attached to the movie. Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Footloose, Back To The Future, Mannequin, Ghostbusters, Fame, Flashdance, An Officer and a Gentleman, Caddyshack, Spies Like Us, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Against All Odds, Romancing The Stone, Jewel Of The Nile, National Lampoon's Vacation, Vision Quest, Say Anything, St. Elmo's Fire, At Close Range, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Running Scared, Breakin', A View To A Kill, Short Circuit, The Color of Money, Purple Rain.. (Honorable Mention to "La Bamba" for the cover version by Los Lobos)
The "thriller" looking leather outfits that Eddie laughs at are a nod to his standup special "Delirious". He wore a similar outfit during the filming of said special.
The two guys are friends of Eddie
Most of the times Eddie Murphy gets out of a jam by playing a character, it was ad-libbed for the movie. The hotel desk clerk scene, the Harrow club scene, and the "Supercop" scene were all ad libbed.
That's right. In fact John Ashton lost it and started to laugh during that Supercop story. 🙂And I'm glad they kept it in the movie.
If a cop isn't assigned to a case and gets involved (and interferes with it), they can be charged with obstruction.
Victor's house is 609 E Channel Rd in Santa Monica. The shots on Zillow look like it's about the same as it was in 84.
Murphy's entrance in this movie was one of those fortunate accidents. Originally, this was to be a vehicle for Stallone. Didnt work out and a casual conversation with Eddie turned into him being cast, and a blockbuster was born.
Yeah Stallone wanted to play it a more action cop movie and not the comedy role, so they went with Eddie and Stallone made the movie he wanted in “Cobra”
@@coreyrees840 And that was one Stallone missed the mark with. Didn't exactly catch on.
@@tvdroid22 which is why I’m so glad this is how it played out. Otherwise we woulda just got cobra under the BHC title and no BHC franchises as we know it. This way we got both (though don’t think anyone gives a fuck for cobra)
@@coreyrees840 And yet somehow, we got Brigitte Nielsen in BOTH FRANCHISES!!! They probably shoulda gotten an actress for the roles.
I was born in 66 so I graduated when this movie came out. Your right , It was some of the best memories💐
Axel and Jennys on screen chemistry is just so genuine and I've always felt that watching this movie which makes it naturally enjoyable to watch. Classic 😎
Love the reaction I also like the fact that you recognized a lot of the actors from other places I did the exact same thing lol I’ve watched this movie for a long time it’s always been one of my favorites
Those Detroit lights were legit all over back in the day. Slang for them were "bubblegum machines ".
Michigan State Police still use them to this day.
If you want to see a lot more of those lights, watch Blue Brothers!
@@bjgandalf69 In The Blues Brothers the IL State trooper vehicles all had "mars bars". The Chicago PD squads had the steel bar across the top with sirens in the middle and a blue gumball machine on each side.
Crazy big nee-naws
"Bubblegum machines". That makes me think that either Coby or Cami(or a dual reaction from both)should react to "Smokey And The Bandit".Because technically,a crime IS being committed in "Smokey And The Bandit".
Old cop cars did have that single really tall flashing light. My guess is that the filmmakers used it on the Detroit cars to emphasize that department was underfunded, and Beverly Hills had the more up to date equipment.
Nope, that's legit what Detroit police cars looked like in the early 80's.
Partly yes. The LA squad cars were '81 Chevy Impalas. The Detroit squads were '79 Chrysler Newports. But MI state troopers still use the single cherry top today.
The old style police lights didn't use LED's. They used regular light bulbs then a concave reflective dish sat at a 45 degree angle and revolved around the light. If you stood in one spot, the light flashed, but if you watch the walls around the car, the light sweeps around in a circle like a tiny,, very fast lighthouse. The lights had to be tall to hold the reflector.
Good job spotting actors. I remember all of this. Wish you could have been there.
11:29 I think The Silence of the Lambs came out about 7 or 8 years after Beverly Hills Cop, if I remember correctly.
Correct, "Silence of the Lambs" was released in 1991......
The next two is equally as good so will be waiting for that to show up in my feed :) Liked your reaction to this !
part II monday ;)
Inspector Todd was played by a real Detroit police inspector, Gilbert Hill. He was later a city councilman and ran for mayor. In interviews, he said he seldom yelled at anyone and he didn't swear. The "rotating gumball" red light on the Detroit police cars was more typical of the time than the ones on the Beverly Hills cars.
I was born in 1951, so I was 33 that year. I don't know that you would have enjoyed growing up in that period. There were a lot of frightening things going on, including the time the United States and the Soviet Union almost got into a nuclear war. That was October 1962, and it scared the bejeezuz out of me. The incident is known to history as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
I got a huge kick out of the movie. Michael Jackson styles were worn by a rather limited group of people. In 1984, Michael went on his Victory tour -- the last one with his brothers (they had been the Jackson 5.)
As a fan and reacter to the reacter, may I say, you could comment less and show more of the movie, and turn the movie's volume up.
You remind me so much of my friend Nataliya Gunda Frank it would be eerie if it weren't for the fact that two beautiful women are three times more gorgeous than one.
yes, making a note of this re: volume for Part II and thanks for that trivia!
@@criminalcontent I added to what I wrote before.
I think the best way to have a really good nostalgic view of the 1980s would be to have been a kid, especially one young enough to experience the whole decade but not old enough to have lived through the early 1970s turmoil. I liken the fear of a nuclear war in the 1980s to what happens now. It is just as likely now but people are still focusing on movies, Taylor Swift, and whatever else is happening in their day-to-day lives.
I would argue the opposite about commenting less and showing more of the movie. If you want to watch the movie, watch the movie. I watch these to hear what the reactors are thinking.
PERFECT STRANGERS got me through my youth. Larry and Balki were, essentially, my babysitters. So happy to hear someone else that recognizes Balki.
Great reaction!!!!!!
Fun fact from this movie that I love: at 17:29 Eddie Murphy is adlibbing the super cop story & the actor playing Taggart can not keep from laughing and has to put his head down.
Serge is played by Bronson Pinchot. Jenny is played by Lisa Elibacher. She was also in An Officer and a Gentleman.
Classic film.
And one of the all time great soundtrack albums. I have the original vinyl and still throw it on from time to time, especially in the summer. They do make'em like this any more.
Great reaction, seen a few who did BHC before but FINALY you are the first who recognises the MJ outfits and Balki 😃
The man behind the counter when Axel checks out of the hotel is actually the film’s director, Martin Brest.
"Hurry up. Quicker." My favorite lines of the whole movie.
Yep, great!! To this day, we always say this line when we're in a hurry or trying to rule over somebody. Hahaha 🤣🤣🤣
Great reaction Cobi like always, love this movie. For a period of time in the 80's Eddie Murphy was the biggest star in the world. He was the world's number one stand up comic and had the world's number one movie at the same time. He also had a hit song! 84 was a monster year for movies. Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Police Academy, Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop among others. This was originally written with Sylvester Stallone in mind. Disagreements over the script led to him converting the movie into the film, Cobra. Eddie Murphy was also planned to play Winston in Ghostbusters but he took this movie instead. Yes. The instrumental, “Axel F. Foley Theme”, was written for this film and it became a international hit in the 80's. Keep up the good work.
Hi Coby, great to see you back on CC :) excellent reaction to this comedy classic, it was fun watching it with you, it's one of Eddie Murphy's best and I'm looking forward to Beverly Hills Cop 2. I highly recommend him in The Golden Child (1986) it's very funny, he plays a social worker tasked with rescuing a gifted kid with magical powers who can prevent the end of the world. Please react to that soon :)
You edited out one of my favorite lines,"What's that man doing here?""Bleeding, sir"
Born in 1967. It's always funny watching older movies like this. You mentioned not having the CGI car crashes and stunts. It was also true that cops didn't really have any sort of serious PCs on their desks and no accessible internet, so when departments were communicating with each other, it was basically landline phone calls, or you might have to use snail mail to send information on a suspect to another police department. It's amazing they apprehended anybody involved in interstate crime.
Seeing Eddie’s face over Coby’s shoulder: 😄
This is my first time seeing one of your reactions Coby, and I’m a new fan. However, how in the hell are you old enough to remember the sitcom “Perfect Strangers”!?!?!?
Had a Nice time watching today 👌💫Take care and have a Nice evening🎼❣️
Eddie always put a up-and-coming comedian in his movies . There's a very successful comedian you will see in part 2
Class of 1986 checking in, the number of blockbuster (and now classic) films that came out between 1981-85 is incredible. "Beverly Hills Cop" was talked about at school for quite awhile and everyone loved Eddie Murphy! Have to say, I was shocked when his friend was suddenly killed. How cool that you're enjoying these movies decades later and having a great time!
Also, Jenny Summers is from the movie 'An Officer and a Gentleman', as officer candidate Casey Seeger, and her real name is Lisa Elibatcher.
Can I just say that I'm both impressed and overjoyed that you know who Balki Bartokomous is!!!!!
Born in the early 70s and raised in the Detroit area, the cop cars were indicative of that Era, 100%.. fantastic review. I absolutely loved the 80s!!!
the tune you were humming to is CALLED "Axel F" , it was the first time a single character really had his own "music"
76 Here. This was the first " R" rated movie my parents ever let me watch. It has remained a favorite ever since. Great reaction, thanks for the nostalgia
I like what you said about wishing you were born in 1955. I was born in 1956, and it was a nightmare having my first car in 1976 (under President Carter), when you had to wait in line for gas for at least 2hrs, and the home interest rates was 17%.
Things were site unseen and unheard in the 80's. Racism still alive, sexism alive, prejudice very much alive. Cameras had yet to be installed on cell phones. In fact there was no internet, no wifi, computers were a tool on a desk, and the only practical cell phones were installed in automobiles, although you could get a handheld cell phone, but they were very big, and they definitely stood out.
1. Movie magic: An entire truck loaded with EMPTY cigarette boxes.🙄
2. IMVHO Eddies' best movies are "Trading Places and "Coming to America"😎😎
3. Serge/Bronson Pinchot was in a funny series "Perfect Strangers".
4. Jenny/Lisa Eilbacher played Segar in "An Officer and a Gentleman" HINT HINT
5. Maitland/Steven Koff is one of the best bad guys ever!😁 He also played the Soviet Colonel in Rambo II.
6. Billy/Judge Reinhold played Brad Hamilton in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
Stephen Koff also played an unhinged Soviet General in Octopussy and a drugged out miner who slaps around a prostitute in Outland.
"Stephen Berkoff" English Stage Actor, Playwright & Director.
Also a bit of a dick in real life!
I was 13 when this movie came out and it is my favorite Eddie Murphy movie. And he has made a lot of great movies. The guy you thought was from Breaking Bad is from Breaking Bad. His name is Jonathan Banks and did a lot of television and film work in the 80's. He was a series regular on Wiseguy, as one of the good guys, and had a small role in the movie Gremlins. He was also the main villain in an 80's sci-fi series called Otherworld. The 80's were a great time to grow up, especially for someone like me, who loves movies.
Yes I second flarrfan's comment about The Blues Brothers (1980) Please react to that, Coby :) it's fantastic! So funny, great music vibes and yeah a huge car pile up. Dan Ackroyd & the late, great John Belushi are awesome as The Blues Brothers - they get their old band back together to try and make enough money to save their childhood orphanage. Along the way, they fall foul of cops, a rival band and nazi's!
First time watching one of your reactions. Very enjoyable. You seem like a fun person to be around. I'll definitely have to watch more of you reactions. Thank you for an enjoyable 38 minutes!
To be a teenager in the 80's was the best. Generation X'ers are just plain rad!
I was in law enforcement at the time from when departments were still transitioning from the whirling/turning blue light bars to the flashing ones. It was really bad when one half of the light bar would whirl/turn, but the other side wouldn't. You'd get out of your car and hit the light bar a couple times to try to get it to start turning.
She's like all the cars got crushed, ALL of them. VW Beetle intact after 2 collisions. So much for reactions.
My favorite Eddy Murphy movie. Thank you for the excellent reaction :)
Yes that was Damon Wayans that gave Eddie the bananas
Fun fact: the hotel worker at the end of the film when Axel asks how much are the robes is actually the director of the film, Martin Brest.
Great reaction ❤
Mythbusters tested hiding contraband in coffee grounds. The dogs still sniffed the contraband out
Honestly this movie has a very very simple story, not alot of layers or surprises. What makes this film so good is Eddie Murphy's performance and the soundtrack 👌
She's going to owe the entire Beverly Hills police department an apology and a gift basket by the time she's done throwing around slanderous accusations! 😀
I was a kid in the 80s and loved this movie so much I bought the Axel F single 😊
In the 80s I was 12-21,that was a awesome time to be a kid
Coby I thought you said you were a little kid during the 80's, but you don't look older than 28. This is one of my favorite 80's movies, and I still have a recording I made on VHS from HBO from around 1994.
Great reactions....Love how you bop to the music every now and then....
I'm going to have to subscribe to your channel simply because this is the first reaction I've seen of this movie, where the reactor actually recognized Damon Wayans.
Detroit police cars in the 60's 70's and early 80's had the single light. I imagine light bars were introduced sometime in the 80's.
And yeah The Wayans Brother that you saw was Damon Wayans way back when he was much younger.
To the bosses of this channel: This young lady is the bees knees 😃 A keeper! 👍
No offense to the other talent 😉
Charming and Real; Sincere and Grounded- a Natural. 💋👌
I was born in 55 and when I look around at the state of the world now I realise we had the best of times, we didn't lock our doors and looked out for our neighbours. Where did it all go wrong?
The sequel by Tony Scott is fab too !
My Baptist family bought this on VHS for me for Christmas at my request when I was 12 yrs old, and we only had one TV and one VHS player. They were not impressed !
I'm over here trying to figure out how I've never come across this channel before. This Coby girl seems to know her shiz.
that's what I thought. pretty new channel I think
The Detroit Police Department absolutely had the bubble light on top and so did/do our State Troopers vehicles!
The fact that you knew Balki, awesome!
Please do Running Scared (1986) Billy Crystal, Gregory Hines... buddy cops in Chicago!!!!
(Edit).. I'll add some more cop movies filmed in Chi-Town, all 3 by director Andrew Davis!
Code Of Silence (1985) Chuck Norris
Above The Law (1988) Steven Seagal
The Fugitive (1993) Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones
Heck yeah, great flick
@@josepharnold1345 I'm not gonna use the word "underrated"...because..yeah, it wasn't as great as Lethal Weapon or Die Hard etc so of course it gets overshadowed. But still a fun flick with another awesome 80s theme song "Sweet Freedom" by the incomparable Michael McDonald! (also, I'm a little biased because it's my hometown.)
Yes! Running Scared is a great 80's movie, lots of sarcasm and one liners from Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. Its a good cop buddy movie and the car chase through the subway was awesome in the day.
It made me so happy that you recognized Balki Bartokamous!
Me too! Bronson Pinchot is such an underrated actor. Guy is crazy talented.
Yes, that is Damon Wayans in maybe his first film role. Look for another well known comedic actor in the sequel in an early cameo role!
Sylvester Stallone was supposed to do this movie but he kept rewriting it and turning it into a action the studio decided to go with a different and go with Eddie Murphy. The movie that Stallone rewrote turned into a movie called "cobra"
Enjoyed watching you react to this movie. Time to check the rest of your channel out, thank you for this.
Please do!
It is the actor from Breaking Bad. Great reaction
You might not recognize her here, but Lisa Eilbacher, Jenny Summers, played Seegar in An Officer and A Gentleman.
The light on the police cars in Detroit are called a Cherry.
The reason the Beverly Hills police were suspicious of Axel was that he didn't look like a Beverly Hills Police Officer. Ahem.
Those tall lights are common in the 80's and older. Atlanta area Police had them, as well as State Patrol. New York had them. There was a time in which the police WANTED you to know they were around to serve and protect...
Bronson Pinchot from "Perfect Strangers"!
He's hilarious in this! 😂
John Aston (Sgt Taggart) co-stars in "Midnight Run" with Robert DeNiro & Charles Grodin; it's about 2 bounty hunters (Ashton & DeNiro) tracking down a mob accountant (Grodin) who is also being tracked by the FBI (let by Yaphett Kotto, who was in Alien) and the Mafia. Another great 80s action/comedy movie with a feel similar to BH Cop (they were both directed by Martin Brest). And yes that is Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmintrout). Lisa Eilbacher (Jenny) co-starred with Charles Bronson (as his daughter) in the very graphic 1983 crime thriller "10 to Midnight".
Midnight Run - Great movie IMHO it's even better than BHC and one of my favourite Di Nero movies.
Bronson Pinchot was Balki on Perfect Strangers. One if the best sitcoms ever!
You have to remember that Axel Foley was a Detroit cop, Not Beverly Hills, So He had No jurisdiction to Operate and arrest people in Beverly Hills. Unless maybe He was already officially working with the Beverly Hill's. Like a joint Task force Or He was loaned out to help them officially, etc.
The actress that played Jenny was in the running to be Princess Leigha on Star Wars before Carrie Fischer got it.
Yes that was Damon Wayans who gave axel the bananas . The oldest brother Keenan ivory wyanes and Eddie Murphy grew up together and are best friends
Eddie Murphy was born in 1961, which was the perfect year to be in your prime in throughout 1980s.
Love BHC. Saw it at Grauman's Chinese Theatre when I was 17. What an experience. The place was packed. Everybody was LOLing, cheering. But 48 Hrs. Is my all-time favorite. Funny but way more gritty. It’s was Eddie’s first movie (2 years before BHC). 48Hrs made such a buzz because it was so different. It was considered for best picture nomination but didn’t make the cut because the Academy Awards people didn’t like the swearing. LOTS of swearing. lol Such a great movie. In 2 years, Eddie made 48Hrs (1982), Delirious (his legendary HBO standup special in 1983), then BHC (1984). His career EXPLORED after that.
Loving your knowledge of these characters or actors that someone who was born in the 70's would know and clearly, you were not born in the 70's! Great reaction and great fun! Looking forward to your reaction to part 2 and more!
And fast times at Ridgemont high came out in 1982
Those Police Car Lights are referred to as a Bubble Gum Machine - A law enforcement vehicle, specifically a cruiser or highway patrol car. From the shape of the old-style revolving lights that resemble old gumball vending ...
"It might hold up..."
New viewers often like this, but they won't grasp what it was like when this came out in the pop atmosphere of not just "the eighties" but specifically 1984. Everyone knew Eddie Murphy from "Saturday Night Live," his stand-up, and the movies he'd done. The plot and soundtrack were also a compliment of sorts to the new hip show "Miami Vice."
You said you would have liked to have been born in 1955 to experience the 1980s but it was probably best for kids.
One of the best action/comedies of all time 🙂
48 Hours is another Eddie Murphy movie you should watch.
The first song is “The Heat is On” by the Eagles!👍👌✌️😁
Yes, that sure was Jonathan Banks aka Mike Ermentrout from Breaking Bad...great eye.
The song was called Axel F by Harold Faltermeyer.
Jonathan Banks was also with Murphy in 48 Hours. He was great in the TV show Wiseguy too.
Movies like this are rare. Yes Eddie is great but the supporting players are fantastic not one weak link.
They used to call those sirens "cherries" on top. some weren't even attached, they just were magnetic on the bottom.
I was born in 1969, it was fun. Going to school in the 1980s lol
This summer there will be Beverly hills cop 4
