Fun fact: Much of this movie was filmed in Dallas, Texas and it was during a very high heat wave. The crew had to install a miniature fan into the Robo suit to keep Peter Weller from suffering a heat stroke. He would lose about 3 pounds of water weight a day and only eat as light as possible.

Hi Cami!😊 Yes, OCP moved the prime candidates for the Robocop Program to the most dangerous police precincts, like Murphy to Metro West. One of the requirements is they must be organ donors. You probably know both this film and "Total Recall" are Paul Verhoeven films. His third futuristic violent film is "Starship Troopers" (1997). "Robocop 2" (1990) is a pretty good film, but after that they went down hill. There was also a Canadian TV series "Robocop: Prime Directives". Great reactions to the original Robocop, Cami!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

We had the luxury of many awesome movies in the 80's and 90's. I was 11 to 21 during the 80's, they were cheezy to a degree back then, but usually in the pursuit of humor. I looked at Robocop as a comic book coming to life.

To me, what elevates Robocop from other 80s Sci-Fi action movies and also elevates Robocop (1) over it's sequels is that it asks the underlying question: "What is human?"
How much can be taken away from a man before he's no longer a man?
How much can be left of a person before they're not that person?
In this movie you see a man DIE.
Then his corpse sits under plastic like a toy under a tree, later walking around taking orders and "having a program, not a name"
He starts to remember who he was, by remembering feelings, not facts.
He starts getting angry (human) at the virtual real estate guy selling his old house.
He starts seeking VENGEANCE (human) instead of justice (Robot) when he ALMOST crushes Clarence's throat. Reminded of his circuitry....Directive 2 :Uphold the Law, "Yes. I am a cop."
After dropping off cuffed Clarence at the station, Robocop says "He's a cop killer," instead of saying "He killed ME." The human starts to re-emerge.
When Directive 4 kicks in, it results in "immediate shutdown," so with the robot part shut down, it's the HUMAN part that's still living. In fact, the shutdown robocop does the most human thing possible: "Tries to stay alive."
That's one of the defining characteristics of being alive: self-preservation. Every germ, worm, or fern or woman named Laverne doesnt want to die.
His humanity peaks through the entire movie and the human questions emerge:
    "Who am I?
    Why am I here?
    I feel.
    I'm alive.
    I dont want to die."
From Directive 4 onwards, Robocop THE PRODUCT and THE PROGRAM is shut down and the wooden boy is now a human Murphy calling the shots.
Probably the most human thing he says is "Leave me alone," after which "I"m not arresting you anymore, Clarence," Murphy has decided he's no longer a cop, but a man experiencing a very human vendetta. BOTH of these sentences and accompanying emotions (feelings of loss and revenge) are completely against his OCP programming.
Every Robocop movie version after this, merely builds on the idea, but never goes back to exploring the QUESTION of "What is human? How much or how little of us is needed for us to still be us?"

Robocop is a brilliant satire of police militarization and brutality, encapsulates by ED-209, which is nothing but guns and armor - it has no way to detain or arrest, only to kill...
There is also a great visual joke when Robo arrests Clarence - Instead of hitting a man with glasses 🤓, Robo hits multiple glasses with a man 🤣🤣🤣

I wasn't sure quite what to make of this movie the first time I saw it. I could appreciate the deliberate cheesiness mixed with the dark futuristic vision and visual effects but I thought the graphic violence was a bit over the top. I was quite surprised when it became as popular as it did. I thought it was going to be the kind of film that would end up on late night cable tv as a B movie. I now accept it as an enjoyable classic sci-fi movie that was carving its own genre.

Robocop (1987) is considered the first of director Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi trilogy. You already saw Total Recall (1990) which was number two and Starship Troopers (1997) is the third. They're not related but you clearly see Verhoeven's signature use of political and corporate satire. And yes, Ronnie Cox (the main bad guy) was also in Total Recall (as the main bad guy). Verhoeven often utilizes previous actors he's worked with in his movies so you'll see lots of familiar faces.

This was Verhoeven's answer to Judge Dredd. He wanted to make a Judge Dredd movie, but there were some copyright/legal stuff that prevented it or would have delayed it, so he made RoboCop. You can see how similar it is to Judge Dredd.
Even the end just ended like it was a normal day for RoboCop- it ended just like a Judge Dredd episode would- "Just another day".
Nothing fancy- just a simple- "Murphy.".. then he turned around and left- and credits roll. Onto the next crime.

    Nice!
One of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made!
Originally Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to play the cyborg cop, but turned it down as he was worried he would look bulky inside the suit due to his large frame.
Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the role as well until Peter Weller was picked due to his slimmer frame to fit the suit.
Weller lost 3 lbs a day from wearing the suit and couldn't eat any solid foods, except for Oatmeal, Ice Cream and Yogurt and would have a protein shake during lunch.
It was 110 in Dallas where they were filming and the VFX team had to put an AC unit in the suit to prevent Weller from passing out.
The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippett and would later do VFX for ROBOCOP 2 and 3 as well as JURASSIC PARK, STARSHIP TROOPERS, CLOVERFIELD and The Twilight Saga.
The film was a box office success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

Cami, you can ‘twirl’ a gun? I’d pay to see that for a dollar! The horrific and gruesome death of Murphy was spoiled for me by a movie review and interview with Paul Verhoeven in the newspaper a week before the movie opened. They described Murphy’ death in detail. Verhoeven likened it to Christ’s crucifixion and his transformation to Robocop as the Resurrection. At the end you see Murphy ‘walking on water’. I went to the theater dreading the moment of Murphy’s death. At that time, it was shocking and disturbing, like being kicked in the gut! Robocop also inspired a TV series continuing the stories of Murphy, Lewis, and OCP. Part of the cast were Murphy’s wife and son who were a part of his life. A young woman who was killed became the avatar of the OCP main computer, becoming Murphy’s link to the OCP main computer. A spinoff of the series was much darker.

Great reaction! I'm glad you appreciate the practical effects from 1987 because I always thought the hard work they put into the Late 1970s and '80s always looked much better than anything of today... (today...meaning the last 20 years or so) All these movies today use CGI that looks fake , feels like I'm watching a video game....and just tons of explosions to make up for a bad directing and movie scripts! most of my favorite movies are science fiction from Star wars , Bladerunner , Alien and Aliens, Terminator and Terminator 2, Predator , and hopefully you'll get to check out Mad Max and then The Road Warrior are incredible too. dystopian science fiction.

Ironically, I think the RoboCop remake handled CGI pretty well. it had other problems, not the least of which was that they played it completely straight. I think there's a sweet spot where CGI can work. Like they say about technology generally: it usually can't be good, fast, and cheap at the same time. In most cases, you have to pick two. The quality of CGI is directly related to the time it takes to create, and the money spent on it. If you can't spend the time or money required, it's probably better to select another solution.

Nearly 99% of reactors don't get the plan when Morton explained it to the Old Man at the start of the movie.

  • @monsterlair
    @monsterlair 4 місяці тому +1

I've noticed something interesting. Most reactors keep the "You call this a glitch?" in the UA-cam edit, but never the second part of the quote, which is the important part: "Your "temporary setback" could cost us fifty million dollars in interest payments alone!" which shows that his glitch-outburst had nothing to do with a man being killed. His concern is the potential loss of money.

The acting is not cheesy or corny... it is heightened acting that is satirizing the cutthroat corporate world of the 1980s...cheesy acting would be if they set out to make a 100% serious drama and it turned out like this.

43:51 I'd personally wish they never touch Robocop again, I noticed you didn't mention this but I'm sure you know it already, The movie isn't your standard action "shoot at the bad guys and save the day" movie, it's a prescient satire on Reagan-era American values and predatory capitalism, That's why all the commercials are over the top and the OCP megacorporation cartoonishly corrupt. The 2014 remake was a burning pile of trash, it made money, sure, but the movie is not good and the critics all agree it shouldn't exist.
Now, as for the rest of the original saga, some people like it, some don't, I personally think Robocop 2 is worth watching I'd say it's actually as good as the first one.
As for the third movie, it's aimed at children, the violence is turned down to almost non existent. it did nothing but hurt the franchise, ruined the director's career, upset the fan base, and provided the weakest earnings in franchise history.

I have to agree. You can’t really remake any Paul Verhoven movie effectively because there is so much of his own personality in them, they are so unique. It’s not about the special effects or the budget. When you watch one of his movies, you are seeing the world through his eyes.

I smell BS. Nancy Allen already had success with her role in Carrie and Dressed to Kill. Peter Weller already had been a leading man in Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and couple of duds in-between. People knew of Ronny Cox before with roles like had in Beverly Hills Cop, but Kurtwood Smith was not a recognizable presence until this movie, and no one was going to stop him walking down the street for an autograph until That 70s Show.
