My son is getting me back into the RC car hobby after 30+ years! I had an original Scorpion with a Le Mans 480 Gold motor. I cut lawns in my neighbourhood all summer to save up the money for that combo! Now I want this kit again!
Love those wheels. Reason alone to get the kit, even as a shelf queen.
I was into RC in the 80s as well. Kyosho kits were so expensive in those days. Now we oldies can get our dream kits in re-releases. Kudos to Tamiya and Kyosho...and you guys for putting out the vids. Thanks.
I've still got my Turbo Scorpion I bought back in 1985 when I was 14. I dug a 4 foot deep trench, 4 feet wide and around 100 feet long all summer for my grandfather to be able to buy it.
It really is a beautiful vintage RC. I also always liked the Tamiya Baja Bug/Sand Scorcher back in the day, which had great looks as well.
Nick B cool story.i carried a catalogue for 7 months slowly brainwashing my parents into buying me one
So,.. u killed ur Grandfather, stole his money and burried him? J/k :P
@@TheWisdom3 Wrong. his granfather was ahead of the times. he made him dig a trench to bury his future wifes. what a great granfather.
I could watch your videos all day - infact I have and I do!!! (whilst building my kits and tinkering with my collection) keep it up guys! Love it - subbed
I like how passionate you are about the cars, old and new. Great video!
Thanks for watching!
I got one still in the box. You've inspired me to actually build it! Thanks!!
hi chaps! I've just got back into vintage rc I'm going to have to buy one of these now!great job on the build. its nice to be able to afford these cars now, love the scale stuff and your videos Cheers fellas!!!
Awesome video guys! I liked this car before now I think I LOVE it! Thanks guys
that scorpion is so nice. unbelievable job.
When these were new, there was a gas version called the Advance. Identical chassis and suspension, but a .21(?) hanging out over the rearend. Glow motors were cranky little buggers back then, and so a Scorpion was what I wanted next. By the time I got the money up to buy one, they stopped making them. Now I've got a chance of buying one again!
Great looking model, NAILED the paint :)
JESUS CHRIST this rc and the Tomahawk are so beautiful I wish I could afford one of these so bad but I'm only 13 and I don't know how to get some money to buy this it would be so awesome to own this beauty I can't explain how much I love this buggy,I wish I had it
I gotta tell ya that I've tried to watch, or get into a plethora of different rc channels, & always tired of the dudes doin'em before too long. But you guys are ez on my brain. I've been a builder for years, but still get tidbits here n there. Great job.
jado6006 Thanks, that's great feedback! I'm glad you're on the RC channels that are around, there's tons of great info out there for sure. We keep finding new stuff to talk about all the time!
I ran mine and it feels vintage, love it
That's a stunning rc. Nice to see some new material.
Thanks 👍
Very nice, I've been thinking of adding one to my rc, small collection.
I love your guys videos. Inspires and gives me ideas on mine keep it up 👍
Yes sir! We will for sure.
Great video! really makes me want to get into RC's more in depth!
Man, I forgot how fast the oldie's really were. Stock motor, tires almost as hard as plastic, and the thing still takes off like you kicked it.
Also a thoroughly modernized Scorpion as a Short Course Buggy (SCB), complete with Trailing arm suspension, would be awesome.
Thank you for posting. I see it is also amphibious!!!
For a vintage buggy it looks like a great setup. Suspension looks like it would work great. I remember when I was younger looking at Rc magazines wanting a ultima so bad.
Jacob Hendrickson Yep, I think if the Ultima comes back, Sang's going to add that to the collection also!
awesome fun vid! great work and damb! I hope kyosho releases a few more classics! ;-)
***** Me too. Thanks for the comment! I think the Ultima will be the next one, but only wishing!
Guy's it's not a ball diff it's gear diff but it's sealed so you can fill it with grease or diff fluids.
the gears are metal and they added a slipper clutch to the 2014 model.
all the aluminum is new age harder alloy also.
Nice job on the paint
shenlonco Thanks for the comment, true it's a Gear diff stock, and Ball diff option! Cool!
Since I have become quite proficient at vacuu - forming lexan. I did make a nice underbelly piece to protect the aluminum rails and durability battery door on mine. Well its a beetle but same exact chassis. It even has a lexan cover similar to the scorpion body as a electronics protector, that's under the lexan Bug body. Anyway I have pushed 80 amp 4s Hobbywing Esc with a 3652 3200kv brushless through mine. No issues so far. The 2.2 wheels and tires are a must tho.
Thanks for the comment. Good report on the electrics too!
I had the original Scorpion back in 1985 when I was 11. It was truly indestructible. The only issue I ever had was the grub screw on the motor gear loosening, but it was a cheap standard motor. The front bumper got bent so many times, it eventually snapped, so I replaced it with a piece of a scrapped Boing 707 tail we came across at a farm near Paris airport on a family holiday.
The gears back then were steel & the diff was fixed / locked. The drive shafts occasionally popped out if you gave it some serious air.
I miss it so much, I'm going to have to re-live my childhood and get the new release.
Do you think it could be modified to use lipo batteries?
Beautiful buggy
smiley37greg Seeing it for myself really got my attention. It's SUPER nice, and the quality and fit is amazing. Really nice!
I love this RC Car! :)
I have one with a Venom Brushless set up and it does wheelies! Super fast but I blew out the front shocks with in a battery or two of running. The plastic bushing went in one, and the ball mount stripped out in the other. What are some good ALL metal shock upgrades I can get so I don't have to worry about the bumps? Also, don't use simple green on the wheel, the chrome paint will come right off. - Easy fix though.
I never seen a scorpion and my very 1st real quality rc car was a rc10 blacktub full bb stealth trans edition I got for Xmas when I was 14 and had just as much fun building it as playing with it,it was so fast to me anyways,I had a Joel Johnson black magic motor, futaba radio and ESC with reverse. Now that In mid or late 80's I knew this kid that had an Ultima and i thought it was the coolest buggy but now I've seen a scorpion I want one,I'm getting one!Sweet buggy!
BDTurbofanatic77 Dennison Thanks for the comments! The Joel Johnson! I haven't heard of that one yet!
GCMRacing1 - Scale Truck RC in Canada Yeah im sure i got the name wrong,i know it was a trinity black magic motor,im pretty sure it was last name johnson edition..its been a long time since 93-94.
i was gonna buy the rt6 but my god that scorpion is calling my name
Wow I cant be older than you guys. I raced a Scorpion when it first came out, it was a step up from my Tamiya Sand Scorcher. You mentioned rc car action, do you remember competition plus magazine? I have a bunch of vintage RC, Kyosho, Yokomo, PB. I just 1 day Prime shipped some batteries! Want to see if they still run!
Hell I would love that style aluminum dish wheel on my scale trucks.
This is an awesome car!
Great talk again! Love that vintage stuff you bring! Bring more of that please! Was that puddle hit intended?
Looks like the old Cox Scorpion! Had the original back in the 80's. Bought one after getting my butt kicked racing against one with my F150 Tamiya.. Just loved the look back then..
I plan on getting one but I am going to run it till it breaks and fix then break fix and so the the cycle begins.
This car was originally was imported into the USA in the 1980s. This was imported by Cox because Kyosho was not very well known back then. I think the original shocks were red. I actually had one of these back then, but I sold it. I do wish I did not do that.
Which color yellow did you go with for the body?
for the rear wheels does not have the hexagonal sprocket ??
thumbs up guys have fun , i love mine
Id be worried about those aluminium tracks buckleing. How solid are they?
Is that the exact same chassis as kyosho 2014 beetle but with a buggy body instead?
I have several of the original kyosho scorpion and assault buggies I think they are a very cool yet simple/clean design.
I still want to make a two seater go kart based on the kyosho assault, making it as close to the kyosho design as possible, some flat stock some square tubing and the FUN challenge of trying to make that front suspension then stick my 12.5HP opposed twin horizontal engine on the back and a full lexan body.......umm yeah fun project and sure to be a blast to drive.
(maybe this summer/fall)
Wow, great project idea!
Excellent
2:00 actually the Kyosho Ultima has more in common with the Losi 22 and was designed as a direct competitor to the RC-10.. But Fun fact: the same designer of the original Ultima designed the HPI 5B, in case you ever wondered why they look so much alike.
BTW, My first RC was a 1985 Kyosho Rocky (Wa wa) I wish I had gotten the Turbo Rocky Aluminum deck plate and chassis upgrade.. the stock deck plate was made to break.
Another great video!!
I built one recently and have had trouble with the front suspension. specifically I can't get the arms to stay in position on the crossbar that bolts to the frame. almost any landing impact causes them to rotate.
any suggestions?
Alfred Donovan Thanks!
I thought there was a flat spot on the bar that kept it in place, but I don't remember. Hmm
GCMRacing1 - Scale Truck RC in Canada Thanks for the reply There isn't, but I'm thinking I'll bust out the file and make one.
I was curious about this but always felt it looked a bit plain. Now the TURBO Scorpion, on the otherhand... I've preordered that ^^
gorrammit i like the fact its plain its just asking for hopups!
great build, to bad that beach was so rocky, going to have a lot of bottom scratches.
Have you ever had problems with the wheels slipping, since they aren't on a hex?
Haven't had that one yet. These were in good shape for the whole time we had our Scorpion buggies, and they held up ok so far.
Please can you tell me the Tamiya PS # for both the primary Yellow , and the darker yellow/orange which you used to back the colour with ??
leebob1999 I think he said the #s in the video when talking about the paint. I don't have them.
From what I can tell PS6 for the Primarys then PS19 for last to get the effect.
nice car.. what color codes did you use? did you paint the driver on the outside of lexan or inside? will it handle a brushless motor?
Hi. It's Tamiya PS-6 Yellow.
It should be able to handle a brushless motor. I would put a 13.5T or higher.
Is this car ready to go or do you have to build it if you do is it complicated to build? And is that the motor that comes with it?
This car has to be assembled completely
I just built myself a Kyosho Tomahawk. Pretty much the same buggy but the tub is gone and there is a radio tray in it's place. Lexan body rounds things out. The main chassis and suspension are identical. I cant wait to get the radio gear installed so I can go out and play with it. Great review guys.
+Dominic Racca Thanks! Happy RCing!
Dominic Racca the tomahawk is the oldest buggy design i think. Its was designed to compete with the late 70s chassis designs. A great buggy a classic really
Wow 10K views!
we should appreciated were rc came from in the 80's
Kyosho way ahead. I wish Tamiya made similar quality stuff. Maybe avante? Anybody think of any other Tamiya kits with metal parts?
So many tamiya plastics!! I wish they did more of the cast aluminum as well, these Kyosho kits are so top shelf!
@@GCMRacing1 the Tamiya SRBs - many parts are metal.
Thought the Ultima won in 1987 & the RC10 was 1985....
Beach!! What beach?? Looks very gravelly. :) Cool car anyway!
ScorchinScooter We went to this one to try to avoid the fine sand. It runs good in the small round rocks though!
GCMRacing1 Cool I was teasing anyway! :)
Where's the beach (sand??)
I love how dorky these guys are.
Super Dork status.
Kyosho did not re release parts , can not buy replacement parts
Its modern Ultima gear diff.
looks annoyed at stranger touching his rc at 0:57 hahahha
body
is tamiya ps..9
Here is me thinking beach beach with sand not rocks 😂
I can't believe those rims are plastic
I read your comment right at the beginning of the video and i was like "what!?, no way, those are alum rims for sure" but then around 9:25 i was like :-O
Dave Racine I know.. just amazing looking wheels on this thing! So much nicer than plastic LOOKING rims!
lmao this guy in green hat thinks losi was racing with and tamiya and koysho an AE back in the day omg hell losi 1st car didn't come out till 1988
