The Tomahawk was my first Kyosho build, and I cursed the developers at times. After Tamiya, it all felt so clinical, one screw for two jobs, etc. Popped in an EzRun combo 3652SD/MAX10G2 and crashed it on the first drive. Both main chassis bars were bent and unrepairable. Ordered 2 new ones, and while waiting for them, I took the whole chassis apart in sections and carefully stored it all. When the chassis bars arrived, I assembled everything and made some minor changes. Guess what? I enjoyed EVERY minute of the disassembly and reassembly. Now.... I LOVE it! Fun drive. 🤔.... the driver? Replaced by an ESC and in a box with three other Kyosho drivers. They do not inspire me at all like the Tamiya drivers do. Cheers! And keep up the good work. Bob
Gavin, you can always solder the wires directly to the motor tabs for a cleaner look. I did this and it looks amazing. I do not plan on removing my motor at anytime either.
Great channel rc kicks just showing my support 👍im not rc cause very costly im 124th scale building a year only and if id of knowing how addictive it was and costly at time i mite not of bothered ha ha but i still love to watch rc guys to support there channles ur channle is awesome very cool collection on wall behind you guys too appreciate the time u put into your videos and builds for our enjoyment cool,, Keith 👍
No worries Gavin! After 40+years of fabbing and modeling...I still often find myself missing the easier way. Course that's what's fun about this hobby, learning all the different ways people build stuff😁
Hi. I love your presentation style and enthusiasm. However, I would really like to see you change the way you do your running videos. I have no clue how the buggy runs from those angles and video speeds. Please do more shots from the drivers (your) viewpoint at normal playback speed. Thanks and keep up the great work!
I would like to see the setup for those onboard videos. Type of camera, type of system to stick it securely to the car without making additional holes etc.
Love the channel as always. I think you may set the standard along with Tamiya legends for RC channels that are always informative and really not much nonsense. Wish you all well from America.
Never seen anyone solder a connector directly to the motor like that. You could solder the wire directly, & if you've got enough wiggle room, put a bit of heat shrink over that.
I had to pack my re released Javelin away in storage, but when I unpack her I will see what kind of brushless motor I added. I cannot remember lol. But, it was a 10T motor and it made the Javelin very fast.
Nothing like the nostalgic 80's. My buddy and I in Jr high would rent slasher flicks and tinker on our Tamiya and Kyosho kits all night. Good peaceful times. ✌️
I seen you wanting to increase your viewers from America I'm in America and here we like kyosho and tamiya but maybe try some old losi review xx or xxx buggy or maybe team associated also brushed motor comparing or reviews is a good idea but keep up the great work
I literally just finished putting the Le Mans ESC and 15.5T motor in my Javelin, and boy am I hooked on the Legendary series even more now. The Javelin is my favorite but the Tomahawk is a very close second. The question is, am I really gonna spend all that money on a Tomahawk and the ESC + brushless motor from Kyosho? Probably yes...
nice i have done the same mods 35 years ago, electronic speed controler, bigger motor, got a total wheely machine out of it. forget control over left or right. just straight on and wheeeeely, but hey fun too;)))
other reason to make the upgrade to the metal brace in the rear if you get hit by another driver if you are out racing the brace won't flex and risk damage to the motor or it's mounts.
Great vid and presentation as always! It really does look like a lovely combo. I wish Tamiya would do them for their vintage cars. Something in the style of a Technigold etc would be cool.
I would almost have the receiver under the driver instead & the esc a bit forward just so there is a bit more air going across it & perhaps a bit weird with the motor wires & the sensor cable needing too be even longer but would ofc help cool down the esc a bit more if you plan on running this hard on a large or several large 2s lipos that fit in the car in a row.
The car is gorgeous. I love the vintage kyoshos. I have two questions that maybe you can help me with: first why does the Kyosho electronic speed controller not need a fan or heat sinks? My second question is about putting a brushless motor into one of the four-wheel drives like the optima's or turbo optima. Would you be snapping belts all the time because of the increased power?
Nice car and motor combo! I have the same motor & esc in my Turbo Optima and I agree it looks great but is a bit slow. I ran mine on 3S and that made it much quicker 😀
For the 2WD Tomahawk its about on the money for 2S but I can see with the extra weight and 4WD you would need more. I did see the ESC can run on 3S but I don't have a 3S battery that would fit inside the little TH.
Wow, so the 240S ESC can handle 3S. But can the 240S motor? Or, with these brushless motors, is it more about that there's really no limit to the motor speed except for possibility of overheating?
Gavin, buy a standard Optima as I doubt you will set a lap time with the Optima Turbo as it's bling. Put the belt drive system in also. Much quieter and faster!!! Take care!
Hi Gavin, Love the channel. I have a question about the 490 that you reomved. How does it compare to other brushed motors? I've looked for reviews but can't get anything empircal about how quick it is. It is comparable to a stock 540 Mabuchi sliver can from tamiay or has it got more omph? I've got 4 of the legendary series cars and as you've found, the non tub chassis cars are a pig to get a brushless setup into due to the fan. I'm not prepared to fork out nearly the buggies worth again on a power system so am stuck with a brushed setup. However the stock siver can hangin out the rear just doesn't sit right with me so I'm looking at a kyosho brushed motor and hobbywing ESC. TIA for your response 😊👍
I would only put the 490 in light 2WD buggy cars, things like the optima need more power to get up and go. I would say the 490 is just like the silver can really give or take.
I prefer to have a plugged setup to the motor from ESC, in case I want to change the motor that im using. Saves having to unsoldered it all the time. What you doing with the brushed Lemans? - hint hint selling?
Nope these are from my vintage motor collection. Almost impossible to find Le Mans motors in the UK these days and importing them from the US is super expensive. :(
oh..ive still gotta go thru that 1/16 sherman kit and replace what i took out, then i can sell it, i will work out a figure we are both happy with, will make an interesting vid, well..many vids, lol
Hey gav. Aren't you just supposed to solder the wires straight onto the motor? Are you still wanting the 4 cell battery pack for your falcon? I still havent got an address to send it
In my tomahawk I use a Quicrun 1060 ESC and a 15t brushed motor , with a 2s lipo is soo fast .the only thing is that I can not find the good trim of the front wheels and the car does not go straight for many meters
Depends what country you are in. These motors are getting harder to find now so are going up a bit. FYI Kyosho will be bringing out another brushless motor 480S &T combo. (You can set the motor to be one or the other) It’s due in Aug along with the phantom
Looks good. THANK YOU! For including the price of the tool kit in AUD. It drives me mental people quoting prices for things solely in USD. Im glad Kyosho have created the brushless motors in the same feel and look of the brushed motor from the 80s. Thanks for sharing, great content.
If you're not going to run it that hard, why bother with brushless? I feel like the lights on the roof completely ruin the otherwise graceful lines of the car. Just because the hardware is pretty?
I did get the Kyosho Le Mans brushless motor and also the Le Mans ESC. I got them for my Kyosho Ultima car. I also it got my for my Kyosho Turbo Optima a Kyosho ESC and a Brushless motor too. They are also Le Mans. I live in California and Kyosho has a presence here. That is good. However, Team Novak which was also in California is gone. What does this mean? It would appear that a lot of foreign companies are cheating and crushing USA companies. Only Team Tekin is left. I bet they will be gone soon too. We need innovation, unfortunately Chinese companies do not innovate they just steal. Very sad. I am not saying that Kyosho steals but the Chinese companies they deal with do.

This is such a gorgeous kit. Definitely my next build. Screw the weights. Fit a wheelie bar!
I love that car and hope to get one of my own some day.
1 of my all time favs - beautiful build 🙋♂️🇺🇸
I hear you on the spare parts Gavin that you forget about, I've forgotten about whole ESC's & Motors I have spare! :-)
Love this model it’s the only kyosho I ever fancied This video was very well presented and edited subscribed 👍

Don’t think so. Have you set the throttle end points?
Yeah it’s not actually slow. Was just expecting faster haha. Wonder if I should try 3s?

Yep
Great running video, the editing and music reminded me of Top Gear. Just missing Hamster screaming "Oh my God!!!!!"
Glad you enjoyed it! Thats most kind.

What camera do you use to get your onboard camera shots? GoPro? Keep up the good work.
Totally agree regarding that rear guard, I have the same alloy one on my scorpion.
Do you think the gearbox will stand the test of time?
Nicely done. I am interested to know what camera and mount you used to get the on car driving shots?
GoPro and tape
What transmitter and receiver did you use with this car?
what battery did you use to power this step up? Thank you
It's a while ago now but I think it's a 2S lipo Tamiya shape battery
@@RCKickschannel thanks for replying.
I have this motor and ESC combo haven't installed in my Optima yet just looks too good to scratch. 😁

How about going vintage and fitting a Kyosho Le Mans motor? Some are really quick.

I have ordered stuff and had it but can use it elsewhere
Does the tomohawk have a slipper clutch like the optima re re? You could adjust that for less wheelies
It does, the plastic cover on the gearbox unclips so that it can be adjusted.
What sensor cable did you use? I wasn't aware one was needed either!
Hi Jason, You can get them on ebay easy enough. Just make sure you get one long enough.
Don't add weight. Soften the rear shocks a bit will have same affect without adding weight.
Hey gav. Aren't you just supposed to solder the wires straight onto the motor? Are you still wanting the 4 cell battery pack for your falcon? I still havent got an address to send it

How did you get it to wheelspin on the spot?

@@RCKickschannel was something tethering the car down

eBay. Something like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332751406803
Chrome shouldn’t tarnish sounds like nickel plate to me. That thing is something shows what brushless power instead old school brushed can do.

Don’t add weights. Just lower the rear and put heavier weight oil.
It needs heavier oil in the rear for sure but I don't think that will be enough. Ill do that before adding the extra weight and see how it goes.
Yes, my re released Kyosho Javelin also needed heavier rear shock oil.
What is a sense wire?
A wire from the brushless motor to the ESC. The ESC uses it to know the motor rotation location.
RCKicks thanks
RCKicks should it be from original kyosho part? Or can we find it from another brand? Or can we make it from another wire?
Nice build, but the run footage being entirely slo-mo is kinda useless.
You need to build a track in the back yard.....
