  • The Lishi 2-in-1 style of pick has captivated many security professionals and amateurs alike, but if you already own an SC4 Lishi pick tool, do you need to upgrade to this latest version? Are there situations where this new pick might be less suited than the previous model? That's the topic of today's video.
    I hope you enjoy #SchlageWeek !

      You know even after doing rekeys for a severial churches over the years I never put that together before, but now that you mention it you're absolutely right... and it makes perfect sense since it's not restricted, but you're not getting it cut at a box store, and even a lot of locksmiths with brick and mortar storefronts might not have many in stock, and even if they do, it's gonna raise an eyebrow because outside of large facilities with multi tiered, multi sectioned masterkey systems, "who the F uses an E keyway???".

    Dev, that's awfully mature going after the need versus want aspect. Add to it the increased fragility and analysis of how often you see those other keyways let alone have to interact with them, quenches the new tool lust. Slightly. It's still cool...

    C keyway was mainly for residential
    E and others were usually iused for commercial systems
    Not exclusively , but an observation from my almost 40 years in the business

  • @derekbroestler7687
    @derekbroestler7687 3 роки тому +2

    Even for a locksmith, I would say if you almost never see anything other than the C, you probably don't NEED it... It's not like the other keyways are high security, or even SO paracentric that they are overly restrictive to pick with conventional picks, pick guns, bump keys, etc. So if on some RARE day you find a customer with something different, it's gonna be rare enough that the tool cost doesn't offset the time advantage of the Lishi in most cases. If by chance you get a BIG job, say a facility turnover and no one has keys or the masterkey schedule, where it WOULD.... well... That's gonna be a multi day job with planning and estimates, etc, so you'll have time to get it.... Then just buy it then and include it in your costs.
    Like I said in my comment yesterday, I DO have two large industrial customers who use different Schlage keyways, and my initial response to the SC20 pick is "I gotta get me one of those!!!"..... BUT, (in a moment of uncharacteristic restraint to get the new shiny tool brought upon only by the fact that I currently have a key machine down with a bad motor, and an AR9 build in the works) I think I'm gonna hold off just a bit see if the price comes down a bit, considering that
    First, everything I sell and install there is new, in box Schlage hardware, and in years of doing this I've NEVER had a box where the keys were left out. If it ever happens, I got 20 more of everything, as well as extra cylinders for all the keyways they use, on site, ready to go. At that point, that's a phone call to my distributor. "There's two types of problems in the world, my problems, and not my problems, and that falls into the latter category, so I'm gonna need an RTV"
    Second, while I have managed to screw up a pinning or many over the years, since I test every cylinder before I put it back in the hardware, I can just shim the cylinder open to figure out where I screwed up and correct it.
    Third, the locks are cylinder number stamped and recorded in the register, along with location, door number, change key it's keyed up to, including blank, as well as in the key issue log, etc, there's NO reason for any door to have an unknown lock, unless someone decided to flex their Granger account privileges, in which case that person's going to get a talking to from the folks I report to, AFTER I open it with ye' olde universal rotary pick and replace it with the approved hardware, OR in the case of new construction where someone decided to include hardware, in which case the project manager gets a talking to from the folks I report to, after I open it with ye' olde universal rotary pick.
    And lastly, after I rekey it to their masterkey system if a lock suddenly isn't working, and checklist of "Check it with another key to eliminate a worn issued change key..... Flush it with TriFlow, run a blank through it and wiggle a few times (to correct most cylinder failures including the RARE occurrence of a #2 top pin getting wonky in the chamber, though VERY rare, and sometimes evidence of a bump attack, it CAN happen through SLIGHTLY rough, but normal use IF it's a high use door with a lot of #2 top pins, say a maison pinning on a conference room)...... Well then, I'm gonna get a call to actually be on site, I'm gonna repeat said checklist, and if I can't just bypass it, then SOMETHING has broken, to the point where the proper, fresh cut, key won't open it, which means I'd prolly just break the Lishi, and there's (unless there is a reason to suspect a bump attack) no reason not to kill it because it's gonna need to be replaced anyway.

    Out of curiosity, is there a resource somewhere that has rough estimates of how common various types of these keyways are?

    • @DeviantOllam
      @DeviantOllam  3 роки тому +2

      All you have to go on are verbal estimates from me and other people with experience who are commenting here. :-) because the Schlage residential line is almost entirely C keyway, that is why the C truly is like 90% of their products in the field which are Schlage classic. Of the commercial type spaces which are not C keyway (so, of the remaining 10%) I am pretty confident in saying that the E keyway represents the biggest share of that portion.
