This song came out while Eastern Europe regimes were falling. So it looked like the Cold War was won by the West. It was a time that after decades of tension and fear of nuclear annihilation, we had no more enemies. The future looked like it would be peace. China was our friend. Eastern Europeans were clamoring for goods, especially bananas, for some reason. Unfortunately, that feeling of freedom has not lasted.
Yep. I grew up in that time. Everything was about Russia vs. the US and the Cold War tension. Movies reflected it (all the foreign enemies were the Russians/communists). In the mid-80's, there was a massive explosion at a refinery that was about 8 miles away from my house. The guy who lived behind me came out into his yard screaming "The Russians dropped the bomb! The Russians dropped the bomb!".

This song reminds me of the roller rink and skating. I think I was 9 when it came out. I listen to this all the time. I wish music was like this now.
Great song . Great to dance to even if your awkward like me .
About time! Next do “ Real Gone Kid” Deacon Blue, Wonderful Life, Black, Ship of Fools ,World Party, Underneath the Radar, Underworld! All late 80s forgotten Classics! #bangers 🔥👍
That was a blast from my past. After high school my girlfriend and I moved out west, all the way from MA to Tucson, AZ in the late 80s, just as this song became popular. It was fun, because the Wild West was brand new to us, and we were young and alive, enjoying the local dance clubs and partying it up.
Did someone recommend you all a bunch of songs about the Cold War/ nuclear war? This one and the Sly Fox one are part of my favorite 80s subgenre of pop songs about nuclear war that don’t sound scary.
They got a precious ballad: I'll be there ❤
Fun band that didn't last too long. Also check out "Shake for the Sheik" and my favorite, "Walking Through Walls."
Takes me right back to my Junior Prom in 1989! My buddy Wayne doing "This one's called the Outlaw" on the dance floor and I remember me doing the fake gun shot at the end of the song. Lots of fun and great music!
Great song, great video!!!
I really love their love ballad I'll Be There.
I remember this song and video back in ‘89. Not long after that I heard “Pump It Up” by Elvis Costello and remember thinking it sounded very familiar. 😉
You're right, it does sound similar. And Costello's song was over 10 years earlier.
The group I was with would replace the lyrics on that break at 5:15 with "brrrrrrrr this one is called rerererRIPOFF ".
I loved the way they incorporated a little reggae dancehall into the song.
Big club song back in the day. In spite of dancing to this a lot, I don't ever think I saw the video. Peace, Love!!
Love you guys. I joined when Jay was doing solo reactions- with Too Much Heaven.
Always puts a smile on my face!!!
im 63 and i had forgotten about this great tune. got married in 89 yikes, 11 years later the big d, but i have a great daughter,33 years old. cant believe it. wouldnt change a thing.
LOVE this song. I had the single on cassette and played it over and over. Now if it comes on in the car and my husband interrupts my singing/ dance performance, I have to start the song over 😂. This video was also banned in the UK when it first came out.
I absolutely LOVE this song!
Thank you for reacting!
Guys, I freaking loved jamming to this in the club! Brings back so many awesome memories. Thanks again for another great one. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
Takes me back to my high school days and they played this all the time at the skating rink
