I just played this for my dad. He has loved Vestal, The Goodmans, and Gaithers all of his life. My dad is right beside me in the final stages of dementia. Jesus will take him home very soon. I don't know how much my dad can understand or hear what we are saying. But mention the Name of Jesus, and he does respond to it. I hope that dad can escape from this horrible disease, illness, or whatever you want to call it, and find his city soon, where he'll meet his Savior and his loved ones too. Please come Holy Spirit
I totally understand my dad has dementia . He's had little strokes. He still can walk and talk. but can't always say what he wants to say or understand everything but he knows us.

I miss the part where Vestal Calls Johnny a show-off. That's just like a show-off she says. Such precious memories of hearing these wonderful people live, and Johnny just about this age.
I met to met Vestal Goodman in 1975 and I could feel the spirit of God coming out of her. I wish I could have half of the experience of God in me as she does. What a great lady is.
I love this song with Johnny & Vestal. When I was a little girl I met Vestal's brother, Cat Freeman. I sat on his lap several times when he was in Iowa. He was also a great tenor & sang with the Blackwood Brothers quartet. I met Vestal & we chatted a good while about Cat. I miss all these wonderful people, including the Blackwood Brothers.

@lindaplummer6403 I'm 64 now but got to see the Happy Goodmans as a teenager and Johnny Cook was with them. He really was all that good. that's about 50 years ago and I remember how good he was. The Happy Goodmans were fabulous. Wonderful memory.

We have a new choir director, a "kid" of 25 or so. He has a beautiful voice, a high tenor. He helps the women every now and then. I have always been able to sing falsetto; I thought everyone could. According to my wife and daughter, "Dad's a better soprano than most sopranos." Lest you think they don't know what they're talking about, our daughter has a master's degree in voice. My wife one in piano performance. They know their stuff. As a fun thing to do at church fellowship meal, I've challenged the kid to a "contest". My wife will play, just as the accompanist did in this video, raising the bar. Granted, it's not a perfect match, since I sing bass, and will sing falsetto. Until recently, I have been a tenor. At 75, my voice is dropping; now I sing bass. I'll record it and post it to my UA-cam channel, hopefully in March.

Johnny Cook's voice type is a Male Mezzo-soprano..... may be equal to a Countertenor.... It also is incredibly rare... especially in Southern Gospel music.
I can't remember the circumstances, but Vestal was sick for a while and the Goodmans hired Johnny to fill in for her. Later when she was better, Johnny stayed on. Later when they didn't perform as a "family" I had the privilege of having Sam and Rusty as guest singers in our church. Rusty returned to our church several times. We then were able to connect with Rusty's daughter Tonya and her husband Michael. Wonderful times in the 80's
