    What makes the model S even more amazing is the fact that the 700+ HP provided by the motors isn't actually fully available, due to current restrictions from the battery and through the circuitry. It's currently limited to about 550HP. Which means that the 0-60 times of 2.8 seconds is not as fast as this car can go, it's as fast as this car can go today. There is still almost 50% HP waiting in the wings for some lower-resistance wiring, say graphene for example.
    Imagine how fast this car could go with another 50% HP.

      carbon nanotube wiring and motor windings have demonstrated superior performance already. These are very cursory nanotubes arranged into wires that are not continuous nanotubes.
      Edit: but the power is limited by the batteries' ability to release electrons, which has more to do with the materials themselves. But if I'm not mistaken though, graphene has been shown in the lab to produce supercapacitors which far exceed energy density of current day batteries and could deliver power at rates which I'd imagine would cause lethal levels of acceleration in any vehicle which could actually use the energy for acceleration.

    Lithium mining isn't even technically even mining, it's pumping out salt from the ground. The common huge hole in the ground isn't at all what lithium extraction is really like. And lithium batteries are actually eco friendly from what I've been able to find.

    For info, the Tesla Model S can't use his "700Hp" It's 530'ish HP, because the battery can't power more

    Your first argument is wrong, wrong, wrong.
    Recall: power = torque * rpm; an electric drivetrain has constant _torque_ all along the rev range, but at 0 rpm you have 0 hp. The power of an engine with constant torque is a linear function of its torque, and yes, with an electric motor, you have the max torque from > 0. This is why you have such an acceleration.

    You don't mine Lithium in the same way you mine for coal and oil though. It's found in dried up lake beds as it occurs in or where salty water has been, so it's easy to get to and its the 3rd most found element on earth. It's also worth noting the battery only contains 2% lithium as an active ingredient. We will never reach peak lithium like we will with oil because it is a metal and once you have enough for the world fleet you simply reuse recycled cars to build the new ones. Tesla recycle their old battery packs as they are essentially a concentrated ore as all the ingredients that went into the pack are still there at the end of its life. This also is a further cost saving that will occur probably in the next 20 years.

      The Model 3 is so important for the company. Probably a bit stuck with the longevity of batteries for a few years, but improving the speed of charging and the number of chargers in the UK will help convince people to take the electric car plunge. To be fair, Elon Musk has said a 400-mile Model S is feasible right now.

      There are 370 000+ people who put a cash down to reserve their model 3. Without even seeing the vehicle and with ZERO marketing! No other car maker can claim anything anywhere close to this kind of interest in a vehicle. That pretty much answer your question.

      ***** I think PGE is a better source then some clerk in a Singapore office. It should also be pointed out that it takes as much electricity to refine the gasoline as it takes to drive an EV. so your gas car makes its own emissions as well as using the same electricity.

    This is the list of things you'll NEVER have to maintain/repair/replace on an EV:
    Fuel tank
    Fuel line
    Fuel filter
    Fuel pump
    Fuel Injectors / carburetor
    Electronic Ignition / coil / Distributor
    Spark Plugs
    Spark Plug wires
    Lead/Acid battery
    Oil
    Oil pump
    Oil filter
    Transmission
    Driveshaft
    Starter
    Alternator
    Timing chain
    Serpentine belt
    Valve adjustment
    Gasket
    Piston rings
    Turbo (if applicable)
    Supercharger (if applicable)
    Muffler
    The only actual maintenance cost is differential oil change every 12 years/ 150 000 miles, electric motor bearings every 500 000 miles and windshield washer fluid! Direction, suspension and tires are the same as ICE, obviously. Most high end cars also share similar sensors, cameras and navigation computer.
    The battery has an 8 years unlimited miles warranty and will STILL be 92%+ efficient after 100 000 miles over 10 years. (SOURCE:
    www.greencarreports.com/news/1096801_tesla-model-s-battery-life-how-much-range-loss-for-electric-car-over-time)
    Replacement cost will significantly drop 10 years from now with technological refinement and mass market penetration of EVs, *BUT* considering that the battery will, in most scenarios, easily outlive the car itself, replacing the battery is not even a consideration, unless you plan to drive 200 000 miles by keeping the car for over 15 years and you demand over 89% efficiency… You must drive half a million miles with this thing to get below 80% efficiency, which mean that from a 285 miles range brand new, you’ll still get over 220 miles of range in the worse case scenario ever!
    Add to this the fact that brakes last 5 times longer up to 100 000 miles due to regenerative breaking, FREE Super Chargers, Tesla infinite miles drivetrain warranty and most important argument of all, electrify cost is orders of magnitude cheaper than gas at only a few buck per full charge, and you will realize EV is a no brainier! With the money saved on gas and near zero maintenance, the car actually pays for itself after a few years!

    • @cool-ie4gf
      @cool-ie4gf 8 років тому +1

      It really isn't, How much would it cost for the ford ka to get to Glasgow to london? And how much for the tesla.

    • @joewakeford
      @joewakeford 8 років тому

      +Scott Irons How many of these 'normal people' really need to drive 450 in one go? Two 20min Supercharger stops en route, giving you up to 50% charge, wouldn't be a huge time sacrifice. We should work out the timings, see what's what.

    • @cirhsot333
      @cirhsot333 8 років тому +1

      And how often do the "normal people" need to drive 450 miles? I have had my Tesla only for 3 months but I have a full charge every morning, and have "so far" never needed to stop and charge the car. In a few weeks I plan a 1,000 + trip. I could take my ice car, but with free superchargers.... I am taking the Tesla.
