Karen Read is accused of murder in the second degree, driving under the influence, and fleeing the scene of a hit and run of her police officer boyfriend, John O'Keefe. The prosecution and defense paint different pictures of what happened the night of the blizzard. The prosecution claims that Karen and John had problems in their relationship and that she ran him over with her car while drunk and took off. They state that they found his blood in the broken tail light of Karen's car. The defense states that Karen dropped off her boyfriend at a party with his police officer friends and that it is more likely that he was beaten up in the home and then left outside in the blizzard to die. She also claims she is being set up by the cops. A Federal investigation is also currently happening but is not finished. So far, the feds say that they do not believe John O'Keefe was hit by a car. The jury selection began Tuesday, April 16, 2024 and I will be covering it gavel to gavel!

MA girl here. I’m so glad you’re giving this coverage. This entire situation has been insane. The Turtle Boy situation in itself is a ride. Thank you for pushing this out of the Boston bubble!
I can't believe what they did to try to silence him.
@@karenbarrows6127 right?!? Like aiden didn’t and doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s getting
@kmolter09 that's what the state does to silence the exposure.

I am so SO happy you're going over this case! I live in MA and a lot of us are just outraged at what is going on with this case and the constant MA state police scandals that we are seeing.
I’m here & I see you! MA sister
@@nicolewhite1288hello! Western MA here.
The federal investigation is so wild. I am very interested to see how that plays into this trial.

@@TheEmilyDBakerI can’t remember if the judge will allow this. (There have been so many motions filed). I have lost track. MA resident here, with a major BOSTON accent
Coming back to this coverage and the opening remarks now that the defense has rested their case. What a journey we have all been on.
Gosh I’m heartbroken for those kids who have lost their parents and then to lose their uncle. How utterly awful! 😢💔
Lived in Canton, MA for 20 years. Now live in the next town over. Sooooo glad Emily is covering this trial.
I know it's going to be a very contentious and sensitive case, but we need to see what the facts are for sure.
My dad grew up there. It’s crazy that it’s becoming national news!
So happy!!!🎉
I’m from Stoughton! We thought the cops were bad in Stoughton….
It’s 🥜 But really so very tragic. I want to hear all of the evidence but as a nurse (30 years) I don’t see how that SUV caused his injuries. This is my old neighborhood. God bless Officer O’Keefe. 🙏
Karen Read could be anyone of us, that’s the scary part. Job loss, lawyer costs, no joke when ur innocent
I have to admit I have driven what could probably be considered drunk a few (only takes once) before uber existed.
That's the scary thing. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.
No.
Wow.... I applaud you for listening to all the evidence first before making up yr mind. Well done
@007nadineL -- Aren't you the 100% GUILTY virus clogging up the comments section, even in the past 14 days of trial when ZERO evidence KR was under the influence or responsible for John O'Keefe's death. 🤷
I started following you with the Depp case, but as a Boston girl, this case is so important to me. I believe in Karen’s innocence 100%, so glad you’re covering this!! The way they have charged people with witness intimidation just to keep people’s mouths shut is INSANE! Turtleboy, the journalist to exposed them was sent to jail for 60 days…also framed. Then the 9 protesters charged with witness intimidation as well. Craziness! They were holding signs on a side walk. Also, don’t worry about getting confused about Morissey, once you see him it’s hard to get Michael “Pass the Gravy” Morrissey, confused with anyone else lmao
So excited to watch her cove Karen’s case!!
"Journalist"...good one with respect to Turtleboy. He's a paid shill by the Defense team to spread baseless theories and intimidate witnesses in this case.
I’m from Los Angeles and I can CLEARLY SEE THIS IS A COVER UP! Just look at the AUTOPSY 👀…that speaks for EVERYTHING!
@@TheShahofBaltimore Autopsy photos prove what exactly? If this was a dog bite, would you expect there to be DNA left behind? Also, if this was a dog bite did the bite happen in the house or front yard?
I was going to say this, after she hears his statement to no one she'll never forget him.
The google search is something I would have difficulty getting out of my brain as a juror
I’m very interested to see how that going to go….
I don't understand how or why they would go forward with this trial before federal investigation of the investigators is complete. That makes no sense to me!
It's wild to me as well. So many potential issues, but also the feds haven't moved on it at all and you can't delay the trial for ever I suppose.
Nothing makes sense in this case
@@TheEmilyDBaker I guess? But still, the findings of the federal investigation could completely change the evidence in this case. If she's found not guilty, it wouldn't matter much (other than civil suits she can bring), but if she's found guilty, any significant findings by the feds will at the very least mean a new trial is needed. Such a waste of time!
@@TheEmilyDBaker apparently the Feds just sent over the 3000 pages last week. If they were going to charge anyone Do you think they would have done that before sending documents or can they still charge someone?
@@browneyez8888i think the Feds can charge any time. If it’s for murder there is no statute of limitations. If it’s for other crimes then there might be some time restrictions
I'm so glad you're covering this!! I walked past the protests happening in front of the courthouse a few months back. I think this is going to be a wild case because of the caliber of people involved.
Dude just look at the AUTOPSY! that YELLS COVERUP! 😢😢😢

@@007nadineL the FBI already said “there’s no way possible he was hit by a car!”…. So unless this author knows more than the feds that author is wrong. 🤣
@@007nadineLeven the prosecution knows there isn’t evidence that shows he was hit by a car. If the FBI & the prosecution can’t find evidence of him being hit by a car, I doubt this YTer you mentioned has additional info that leans toward KR hitting him with her car.
I'm not saying she didn't do it but the fact that there is a federal investigation and an independent reconstruction expert that says the injuries and car damage are inconsistent is already enough for me to say theres enough reasonable doubt and it's impossible to convict.
I agree. I have a feeling she did it, but there will be too much reasonable doubt for conviction. Looking forward to watching it!
@@hollystiener16 Except she clearly didn't do it.
@@wmdkitty Well we will see. I am not convinced one way or the other.
Yes, just that single fact is 10000% enough to prove reasonable doubt. I think the armchair law experts forget that reasonable doubt what they need to prove. And with the 3rd party culprit, they don’t need to prove who did it, just that someone else plausibly could have. I don’t understand how anyone can hear the plain facts and still think she can be convicted.
But if not killed by the car impact she is automatically not guilty as they specified the criminal acts involved which required a car impact.
The fact that Jenn googled "Hos long to die in snow" well before John was found dead should throw the whole case out.
It's a wild search. I think the prosecution is going to argue that the times are all off and the data is unreliable....but I want to see what points to it being unreliable because phones are pretty good at tracking us.
@TheEmilyDBaker true, but wasn't it the prosecutions data analyst that gave that google time? 🤔
The Feds' analyst proved the time was 2:46am - and they had updated software the prosecution didn't have when they pulled the data. So, it's undisputed that the Feds are right.
@ThatRedhed thanks for clarifying! I'm a MA resident. This will be an interesting couple of weeks.
@@TheEmilyDBakerFBI confirmed time. Battle of the experts
As a MA resident its so important for the world to see the corruption that has been plaguing our state. You should look into the Sandra Birchmore case that is also under fed investigation, took place in canton with some of the same players.
Actually, Birchmore is in Stoughton. Same County, same DA (Morrisey), same decision to protect cops 🤷♀️
@tibb814 she was found dead in canton and the investigation was conducted by CPD and MSP.
@@ROXY_MCFLY my mistake, thank you for pointing it out. Stoughton did their own internal investigation.
THIS! Stoughton police, Canton victim.
@@tibb814 One of the first responders to the Birchmore scene was Officer Lank of CPB, the same Lank that wrongfully arrested the Lopilato brothers when Chris Albert got into a fight w one in the 00s. All of these people are on the witness list in the Karen Read case.
A cracked tail light doesn’t seem like enough damage to kill someone?
It’s not. It’s definitely not enough to cause the injuries John suffered.
That’s why the feds’ investigation confirmed the defense experts - there is a total mismatch between weapon and injuries. The prosecution may as well claim Karen gunned John down with an assault rifle.

I payed no attention to this case until 3 months ago. With a background in EMS, the injuries of Officer John O'Keefe just doesn't add up. That was the first red flag for me. After diving into both sides' point of view, It's astonishing to me that this is going to trial. I'm from Massachusetts. I'm law enforcement bias usually. This case is an eye opener from me.
The Judge really seams to favor the prosecution
She knows the Alberts and McCabes. Her brother was one of their lawyers. I believe a hit and run case. Chris Albert was drunk and killed a young man. He drove away and later turned himself in(when sober). He only got 6 months, and he’s on the select board.
LOL - Seems to??
This case is one of the most interesting ones I’ve ever watched play out. I’ve been a trial watcher for 20 years from the old days when there was just court tv! You’ll not regret this one.
Agree and same! Each side has compelling arguments in my opinion. It *seems like (not saying this is always the case), people who have a strong opinion one way or another are willing to just ignore a lot of evidence that isn't supporting their personal opinion. To me, both sides have some good stuff and I am so interested in seeing how this trial comes out!!
@mombythec I'm interested what you think the prosecution has that makes you say both sides have good stuff
The only evidence they have is that Karen & John argued, every body does. If the injuries don't match being hit with a vehicle, as the fbi said, then she didn't kill him
@@Lc0522 if that was all the evidence they have, we wouldn't be here. It's all laid out in their paperwork, there are so many more alleged pieces of evidence than that they argued. You just have to read and/or listen to their case, that's what I am doing.
As a mass resident and a waitress in norfolk county this case HOT. so many people i know are personally attached to the case and it is so divided. Excited to watch ur coverage emily!! ❤

So there are kids who already lost parents and now they've lost the person who stepped in to care for them. How awful!! I hope there is someone responsible who can step up to help them.
It sounds like they were orphaned by anybody who was related to them. Their aunt died. Their father died, and now their uncle is dead. Unless they have grandparents or other extended family they’re probably isn’t anybody.
@@ravenzyblack their mom and dad passed away. It wasn’t their aunt. John was adopted them and was raising them and they lost him. Now they are with John’s parents.

Also the MSP Labs are sketchy at best.

Now that those witnesses have testified…. 😬
If the dog has a history of biting, it's significant. I worked dog rescue and rehoming a dog after 2nd bite (1st bite gets excused as it's "never done this before") is not unusual. It's done to hide the history so the dog doesn't get a dangerous dog label or be put down. If there were two bites prior to àlleged night of attack, that would be an extremely poor situation for the dog/family. Jmo

It's fairly ironic that the prosecution holds cell data that shows he did not go into the house as fact however when the google search is brought up they claim it's not exact. I would assume navigation would be more off than a google search but I'm just a true crime addict who genuinely does not think Karen Read did it.
No one can explain how John’s phone didn’t move from the spot he was found in the morning. No GPS or steps from 12:36 until 6:04
Good point!
Your phone doesn't show steps if it's not in your hand or on your body. You can bend over, pick up a phone, turn and put it down and it shows nothing.
You can do the same thing except put the phone on a body that you are carrying and walk up the stairs and to the front yard where you dump the body and the phone. John and Karens phone were feet apart as the drove from point A to point B. At Point B there phones got further apart. As he got farther from Karen. He got closer to Everyone in the house.

@@sarah8349 yes! There are so many excellent creators we can rely on like EDB!! Honestly, the hit he put on me, really didn't put us in a bad light to anyone who I'd want to associate with. It really only made him look like the terrible person he is. Even the pictures he poached off my facebook page were pretty decent ones lol. I don't want anyone who discriminates against any group of people to befriend me, so he did me a favor. I feel really sorry for a transgender woman named Ashley who he has repeatedly targeted and caused some serious troubles for. I did not engage, but Ashley sadly did. It's awful how he treats people just because he doesn't agree with their gender identification. He's so gross and should go right back into his shell.

This was great! Can’t wait for trial! I’m very curious about this case especially living just a state away in NH.
6 drinks plus shots in like 3 hours?? Id be dead from all of that. Jeez
Some have said she was buying rounds for everyone I will be interested how this is presented.
Glad you’re covering this! I would be curious to hear your thoughts on the judge’s decisions like the buffer zone around the courthouse and her not allowing the defense to include a third party in opening statements.
I’m convinced she’s innocent. The Google search of Jen McCabe is just one thing in a long line of evidence pointing away from Karen. What’s scary is this could be anyone. The amount of “missing” phones and video footage is wild too.
I am very mixed on the buffer zone. I want to know how the jurors are coming in and out of the court house. I am ok with no amplification devices (bull horns, speakers etc). I understand the concern based on the allegations of witness intimidation, yet there are often other ways to deal with it, including bringing people into the courthouse other ways if possible.
As much as the 70 days of investigation missing on the Delphi, Indiana case???
The multiple incompetence across many states means the real killer is getting away. This is not proper justice for the victims and their families.
Convicting the wrong person does not help anyone except the criminals.

@@millied4089 Thank you for being honest here, Melanie is completely one sided. The correct approach to this case if you are trying to be "objective" is to form opinions based on the evidence.
@bucks_in_6 absolutely. Not all UA-cam lawyers are as ethical as Emily. They are in it for the subscribers.
@@millied4089and Melanie isn’t??
This is another wild case 😮
It's wild.
Being a New Englander, I will appreciate the more local accent in this trial lol
I am super psyched you are going to cover the trial.
Oh, this is going to be quite the case, Emily. We must all gird our loins. Welcome back to the East Coast, EDB - let’s get some justice for Officer John O’Keefe.
Question ❓ under the law is homicide and murder synonymous with each other❓
Different jurisdictions use them differently. Generally yes, but there can be places where the law is a vehicular homicide, but then the other statutes are murder. You will also see homicide as a manner of death from the cornor's office in some locations where the statutes call it murder. But generally yes.
I’ve been waiting for this!!! Grew up in the town over, going to school in Canton my whole childhood. If you need a local POV, I’m your girl.
I’m so interested in this case! Thanks Emily! 💜
This case sounds intriguing!!🤔
Ive deliberately only seen one news report about this case as i wanted to go into it with a clean slate, so to speak but gotta say i find it all somewhat 'suss'. Im intrigued.
I was behind through the entire Adelson debacle, still haven’t caught up. Looking forward to your coverage of this trial!
One misconception about this case is the snow.. I get it for those who don’t experience winters like we do here in “Bawson” Ma. I’m born and raised, but lived much of my adult life in Santa Monica, Ca before moving back. When everyone left the “bah” the snow had just begun. A dusting for us. At the time Officer John O’Keefe was found fatally wounded there was barely 2in of snow. There is a pic in the documents of a Leo with a ruler measuring it. Sadly it is only 1 of a few LE bothered to take that morning of the scene. Weather reports also confirm. The storm didn’t pick up and accumulate until after 8am.. ~From South Shore, Ma
Wow. What a mess hey ?! ... I personally believe that the defense has a plausible explanation of O'Keefes injuries ... Its plausible to believe that the family dog would attack the person "visiting" the home and isn't it very suspicious how the dog was rehomed with no clear reason why... Hmm ... I hope the right thing is done here and justice is served!
