    Lyons ROLL-X RX2 Incubator is demonstrated here, pieces and parts. This unit is interesting as it has a back up thermostat in case the first solid state thermostat fails. These units are VERY expensive, but they will last for many years of incubating. I wish the power cord was longer, and that the rollers rolled easier. Other than that, this is a stellar unit. You can add water, increasing the relative humidity, without opening the incubator. Get replacement parts here: www.lyonelectric.com/html/incu...

    I've subscribed :-) I can't wait to view more of your videos! We incubate and hand raise all of our parrots and cockatiels. The incubator and brooder we use was included in a purchase of birds last year. It sat on my back porch for 2 or 3 months before I had time to clean it up and see if it worked. I had no idea how to use it. Your advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your replys.

    Had two of these but much older models. They never failed. Had a black out for 16 hrs one year and power came on - 2 days later they still hatched. Have a Chinese unit at the moment so far 5 sets of eggs zero hatch chickens. I miss my Marsh Roll X.

    @mysticaldream806 If the unit is not up to temperature, the fan comes on immediately along with the indicator light you are asking about. When it reaches the proper temp, if turns off... Hope this helps... if your fan is not running, is the heating coil heating up? They are on separate interior connections... good luck!

    Wow, seems like an awesome community going on, what would you guys recommend for a much less expensive, manuel incubator? I would like to start a small backyard flock and it seems good to have one. This awesome product seems way to pro for someone like me. Im a little low on cash, nothing more than say, around $200. I have everything else set up, just need the eggs and incubator and feed. I was thinking about ducks, having a small flock of ducks, some runners, nice pets. Any suggestions plz

    I am using a Marsh Roll X Incubator with a turner. I am setting it up for the first time this season, but I did use it last year. I can not remember if the fan comes on right away or after its up to temperature. Can you tell me? Also the same question about the light on top. Thank you.

    @HTCSWEOD thank you for the advice!!! i still have one question. you said it was a matter of range in motion right? well, i dont have those commercial turners i have a homemade one. it tilts eggs up, but also rolls them at the same time. its hard to explain. anyways can i put the duck egg in my homemade turner? last time i had eggs in it, i turned the eggs by turning a nob every 8 hours slowly. 8 out of 11 chicken eggs hatched. just letting you know.!!! thank you.

    FYI. I think mine is a bit older model because I don't have the solid state thermostat, just the wafer one. Also, my reservoir bottle fits into a hole on the top of the unit rather than off to the side. I saw on Lyon's parts list that my bottle is for model RX or RX1. As far as the turner, there definitely something wrong. After two hours of testing, it only moves after pushing the button and only slightly. I saw on Lyon that a replacement motor is about $55 but I want to trouble shoot the timer as well just to make sure. I opened up the turner and everything looks good. The motor is an Ingraham series 75A. A quick internet search of this motor came up somewhat empty handed other than it's an old clock motor and I found one place that would rebuild it for about $165. ouch. The timer is Ingraham series 80. I may just have to call Lyon in the morning to see if the have technical help to guide me on testing it out just to make sure. At this point, I am open to any advise. Once I get the turner working, I will do a test of the entire system with distilled water for 24 hours. After that, a practice run on silky eggs, before investing in the goose grid and goose eggs ($20 each for the ones I want).

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому

      I wish you well David, you're much deeper into the motor than I've ever been. I hope you find Lyons to be friendly in helping you troubleshoot. I've never had much luck corresponding with them, in fact, they never responded to me at all many years ago. I hope things have changed. They are located in the San Diego area. Please let us know what you finally figure out :)

    @HTCSWEOD We had to replace the fan motor. Now the fan is running and the unit is heating up. There seams to be a little more noise and vibration than I remember from last season. What is the best way to adjust the screws to lesson the vibration? Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you.

    I have the Turn X but I need more space to hatch larger eggs. The Turn X is idiot proof. How about the Roll X is it also pretty reliable. I got a cheap incubator and had a fail on some expensive eggs so i'm trying to step up. I like seeing the hatch without opening the unit. I worry that the cabinet type would cause fluctuations during hatch if you try to view or remove hatched chicks. The cheap incubator was a box like this one but you couldn't view and when you tried to open to unplug the turner for the hatch or remove a chick, too much heat and humidity was lost. Then the recover would make the temps go too high unless you manually opened it a crack till it stabilized. Ruined a whole tray of rare turkey eggs. Got one chick only. Trying to decide what to get - another Turn X or this one or something else? I like that Lyon is around for parts over the years. That has been great.

    Just an update. Figured out my issue with the turning motor. The set screw that attaches the motor to the shaft was stripped. A little epoxy and everything is good to go. Only thing left to do is get a couple of parts. I don't have any wick sock and I missing the perforated screen. The screen on your video looks different than the screen available on Lyonusa.com. Is your just a piece of 1/4 hardware cloth?

    hello!!! I've been asking this question to other people but they haven't responded so maybe i'll ask you. why do duck eggs incubate better on their sides???does it interfere with their development??? why do they have to be rolled instead of tilted? you said that in the video but you didn't say why. how come its duck and not chicken eggs? i really want to know because im incubating duck eggs in the spring for the first time and i have one of those turners that tilt eggs.
    Please Respond!!

    Hi I am using one without the water reservoir. How much water in ml should I add. Just added the chicken bantam sized eggs

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 роки тому

      The amount of water you add will depend on the air cell size as you continue to incubate. I start off without water and then add water to the basin if the dehydration rate of the egg is going too fast, if it's right on track, then I just add water on the 18th day for max humidity during pipping. It's really dependent upon the humidity in the area where you are incubating your eggs.

  • @FrederickDunn
    @FrederickDunn  11 років тому

    Yes.. the fan runs continuously, it's the heating element that switches on and off to keep the temps constant. You should get many years of use out of this system!

  • @oldtimeycabins
    @oldtimeycabins 3 роки тому +1

    Do you think I could fabricate a piece to make the unit taller- then get two rows of eggs in???

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 роки тому

      I personally would not do that. I would look into a GQF cabinet style incubator for a larger capacity.

  • @FrederickDunn
    @FrederickDunn  13 років тому

    @mysticaldream806 You are asking lots of questions for someone who isn't even subscribed to my channel (">(">(">.... no problem, anyway, yes the fan runs continuously so everything remains evenly heated... it's only the heating element that should cycle on and off with the temps. The light may just indicate that the unit has power and serves to let you know if the power is interrupted. 99.5 would be perfect and 99-100 is in a good range. I don't need to see a photo... thanks anyway!

    I have a Roll X that has been used off and on but, more in the last 2 years. I used it less than 2 years ago hatched my little brood with no trouble. Found some eggs and after getting them home my incubator will not go below 117 degrees. I do not have a thermostat like yours but have a wafer that I have turned up and down at least 10 times. When I look at the book there is a little block at the bottom of the wafer but, my wafer is not attached to any kind of wire or box. Will you please give me some suggestions. When I turn the screw down a couple of times the light tried to flicker that was all

  • @davidmendez3545
    @davidmendez3545 7 років тому

    Hi Fredrick, Thank you for the video. I just got a hold of a Roll-X incubator and looked up your video to see how it works. I got my Roll-X from a university lab and thoroughly sanitized it. I want to hatch some goose eggs so I will have to purchase the goose egg grid since mine came with the grid for quail eggs. Since I got my Roll-X for free, I guess it would be ok to spend the $75 for the other grid. Only thing I haven't figured out is how to get the auto turner to move. I push the button on top and the motor turns sometimes and not a complete cycle. Any suggestions? I can't seem to find a manual.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому

      Hi David, wow bonus, getting it for free is great. Are you certain it's not doing a complete cycle? It "should" just roll the eggs one way, pause for about an hour and roll them back in the other direction. Are you saying it only rolls part way through the cycle then stops indefinitely? There really aren't any user adjustments for the auto turner. Put some fake eggs, or chicken eggs on it and see how far it's turning them, if it goes at least 90 degrees you're probably ok. With duck or goose eggs, I like to roll them for best results in something like the Top Hatch incubator. Turning and tilting produces lower hatch rates with ducks and geese.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому

      Hi Again David, UA-cam blocked your most recent comment (no idea why) and it's under the "held for review" category with no option to "allow" your post. Weird. Anyway, I'm glad you fixed everything and yes, the bottom screen is 1/4" galvanized hardware cloth that came with the unit originally and it works fine. Thanks for taking time to update me and so glad you're back in business with that unit!

  • @Proconst1
    @Proconst1 9 років тому

    At the time of hatching,do the chicks just fall through the turning grid and on to the screen?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  9 років тому

      Proconst1 No..... on the 18th day of incubation, turning stops, the grid is removed and the eggs are placed on the wire well before pipping/hatching occurs. Also at that time, humidity should be increased to reduce the possibility of chicks drying out and sticking to the shell. Thank you for that question!

  • @micmarie65

    It's simple really.. ducklings need more exercise inside the egg than to developing chick embryos. So they simply do "better" with rolling... tilting is a limited range of motion, rolling allows and encourages more complete movement. It's also better for chicks, but ducklings seem to do worse when undergoing incomplete turns. It's that simple, sorry you had such a hard time getting answers. Take Care!

    @HTCSWEOD I hate to keep bothering you but I have 1 last question. The fan has not shut off. Is it supose too? The light does go on and off. The temp is at 99 - 100 degrees. Our unit does not have a wafer control. I have pictures of our unit if I can get a email to send them to you. Ours is slightly differant than the one in your video. Its green in color. Its does not say ROLL-X RX2, just ROLL-X. By the way...we used it last season with a very good hatch rate. We raise parrots. thanks again!

      That's under your control, if you need to increase the humidity, then yes, if you are already in a high humidity environment, you may not need any water until the pipping stage.

    It isn't necessary to have a turner in your incubator... the eggs may be turned by hand several times a day... turn them an odd number such as 3, 5 or 7 times a day so they will have a different side UP over night. Good Luck with your design and construction!
