    Thanks for the video. I am wondering where you got the gap spec for the plugs? I changed mine at 55k miles and measured 0.028" on the old ones and the new MB came gapped at 0.028", so I kept them as is out of the box and it runs great. Your metric torque "nano meters" should be Newton-meters.17 ft-lbs is 23 N-m. I don't know how you were able to get the back coil pack off without loosening the black electrical module mounted on the top of the engine- even doing that, it was very tight. The paper towel trick works in a pinch, but it was difficult and it wiped off the diaelectric grease from the insulator- which I recommend applying to keep the rubber from sticking to the plug insulator.

I am also wanting to do a service to the transmission and have watched many different versions of the proper draining and filling, my questions is as follows: Do I need a special kit to drain and fill the transmission? The oil sump on this car has the filters attached to it ( 2 filters) and the pan or sump has to be replaced. Just checking to see if you have any information on this type of transmission. Thanks in advance and thank you for your service to this great Nation. HOOAH

    I think the guide is on removing the spark plugs is fairly good.
    The not so good. 14mm spark plugs are very common for direct injection engines and cheap. Additionally these spark plugs are indexed (electrode position matters) in direct injection Mercedes-Benz cars. The washer and correct torque should result in the correct indexing of the spark plug. Using grease to prevent corrosion, while a good idea for helping the next removal of spark plugs, changes the torque value. In effect the lubrication from the grease results in over torquing the spark plugs. Di-electric grease should be added to the inside of the coil over boots to prevent sticking on the next spark plug removal.
    If the coil over boots are stuck to the spark plugs, you could try to remove them warm. Just "never" remove or install the spark plugs unless the engine is dead cold (multiple hours after running), as the strength of the aluminium is significantly reduced while hot and you are likely to damage the threads on the head.

      Yes, it’s then considered a wet torque. For an application such as this, wet torque won’t throw us off that far to hurt. The anti-seize is definitely necessary to prevent dissimilar metals from corroding.

    Absolutely NO antiseize on this specific spark plug. Those are indexing spark plugs that's why 17 ft-lbs is so important. Of course the argument will be that your engine still runs but it's not right. The plating on the threads is actually antiseize on those plugs. You can check with NGK.

    • @franklopes3648
      @franklopes3648 Рік тому

      I just replaced the plugs on a W205 with about 30,000 miles on it because one of them was misfiring from time to time. NGK makes these plugs but they also make a lot of faulty ones! This is the second time in my experience with all brands of plugs on many vehicles when one misfired, quite prematurely, both times NGK plugs! I thought the plugs were going to break - I must have had to use at least twice the torque they are supposed to be torqued to, to get them out! Once out, there was plenty of carbon on all of them; the back three had half of the threads rusted quite a bit. Anti-seize compound helps prevent rust on the threads and to get the plugs out the next time they need replacing. What will you do when they seize in place with rust! Pay to have the vehicle towed (probably far away) to get the openings rethreaded at a specialty shop or just replace the engine (as I have read someone did)? Good luck with your approach! FYI, a thin coating of dielectric grease on the coil pack boot also helps slide the boots easily on and off and improves electrical conductivity at the contacts.

      @@franklopes3648 There is a coating on the plugs that will keep them from seizing in the heads. I was a Mercedes Benz Tech at two dealers and have owned a repair business for almost 17 years. 21 years of servicing MB vehicles, replacing thousands of spark plugs on them and have never had one seize in the head for the reason I mentioned. Carbon is clearly not the same as rust. If you are experiencing excessive rust on the threads, there is moisture getting in there somehow. I just did a 2014 E350 tune-up yesterday, with a 136K miles and the plugs came out with no problems. Anti-seize will throw off the torque spec and you will create bigger problems.

    • @franklopes3648
      @franklopes3648 Рік тому

      @@marcsmith3881 There was plenty of rust on about half of the threads on every plug that I pulled out after only 30,000 miles, that is the reason it took so much torque to get them out. It definitely was not the carbon on the electrodes that caused that! May I suggest you keep doing what you have been doing and I will do what I have always done which is use anti-seize compound to get those hard to get plugs out? I have never had any problems with any plugs coming loose on account of any anti-seize compound. But I have heard horror stories from mechanics in whose hands spark plugs broke and then they had to send the disabled vehicles by tow to specialist shops to get the engine slots for the plugs re-bored at great expense! Yikes!

    • @marcsmith3881
      @marcsmith3881 Рік тому

      @@franklopes3648 Just because you have done it that way doesn't make it correct. I would suggest reading Mercedes information on WIS if it's available to you or Alldata. The spark plugs on the newer engines are indexed. If you do not install them properly, there will be carbon build up over time and it will cause problems in the future that will be difficult and expensive to diagnose. I can assure you that you didn't hear those horror stories from MB techs. Almost all of the engines we pulled out of MB vehicles were due to owner error. Nothing is more dangerous or expensive than old mentality on new technology.

      @@marcsmith3881 I have had more problems with work done in dealerships than I have ever had with the class A mechanics you disparage, bud. I have replaced others that had less carbon build-up at 60,000 miles! So much for your argument! Clearly, technological developments that bring us new designs of spark plugs are not what they are cracked up to be, are they? Why are these new designs not delivering like the old ones in terms of longevity? Could it be the financial interest of the producers being put ahead of those of the end user? And you are being asked by an engineer!
