I saw that interview, and it felt to me like a uniquely powerful, significant moment for the U.S. corporate world. Lina Khan is also unique. Picture one of the best known critics of big business - Bernie Sanders - and then try to imagine the polar opposite. Khan is equally smart, but economical with her words. Gently spoken, but very serious about telling it straight, and still keeping a card or three held close. What to say and what not to say. No b.s. and no filler. It's not at all surprising that she has a hefty reputation for Getting Things Done - against the odds too. All power to her!

In the movie Idiocracy it shows one company OWNING everything in the future. From slurpies to clothing.I know its a fictional comedy but it address monopolies and anti-intellectualisn and the negative affect of both. Watching it again its no longer funny, its a warning.

The level of consolidation and market concentration in the US is extremely high, and that's due to a total absence of any meaningful regulation, but it's not all due to that. And of course, in many cases competition isn't even an efficient model for operation of particular industries, because it requires extreme excess replication. For instance running parallel train tracks to allow competition in running a particular train service. Or multiple hospitals in the same community that only needs one in terms of its population. But in general, the ideal of a competitive market is a metastable theoretical ideal, not a reality that can be sustained in most markets. It works best in consumer markets, but even there real problems inevitably emerge, some of these come through vertical integration, including in the transnational context, but even without that there are some pretty serious issues with the model of preference aggregation and feedback, in terms of demand-structuration and consumer power over the ethics and behaviour involved in satisfying a given demand. And then there's the selective pressure on behaviour within the structure, whereby myopic and even malign behaviour can be not merely incentivised but enforced in a manner that radiates beyond the market and into other institutions. You could go on forever.
Wall street won this battle a long time ago and saying anyone at FTC has been successful is not true. FTC has people who try really hard, but they follow rules that are designed to keep them in check.
