How bad Americans are at geography always boggles my mind. It just doesn't add up. How can you be an adult human being and not know where your house is.
It's because our schools have moved away from basic education and are more interested in turning out social justice warriors. Dumb people are easier to control.
I can’t name every county in my state, but I could list and label a large share of them, and certainly the ones near my home! It puzzles me that so many can’t, or have no clue what cardinal directions are!
Live in Chicago. Had a history teacher good ol Mr rezek. He used to give us a writing punishment for late assignments or talking out of turn in class. The were called street sheets. And it was an alphabetical list of all the named streets in Chicago.. I'm still grateful to this man today. I'm amazed at how many of my friends have no idea where we are when we are moving around the city.
This is why James Spann is the GOAT of meteorologists. As someone who lives in the state of Alabama, it burns me up that people don’t actually know where they live on a map. All these “what about insert random town name here” or “will this community see severe weather” questions give me a headache. There is also no way to pinpoint exactly when and where something will happen. When James decides to hang up his suspenders we will lose an icon in weather.
James nails it. I’m a storm chaser in Oklahoma and I am still trying to learn the geography of my current state. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes (and let’s face it, NO ONE is exempt from the threat - even places that haven’t had one in years), learn where you are, the adjacent counties and at least two nearby cities in each direction.
Yep I've learned a few of the counties around my town including some of the outer roads of my town. I also have the lucky advantage of hearing the next counties siren before mine. So it helps prepare
Proud to say i've been able to find my house on a map since I was a 1st grader and no, I did not grow up navigating primarily with maps, i'm only 21, I grew up as technology rapidly evolved. It really shouldn't be that hard, the bar shouldn't be this low.
I found this from the story in the Washington Post. Technology has made people lazy in not typing in search, but end up using Google Voice or Siri Search. It is amazing people cannot read a map, know how to balance a check book, Manage passwords on there internet devices. Just mentally lazy.
I’m for sure lazy. But I can type junk in. And I can’t read a paper map for navigation so well but if you give me a map of the area I can point to where I live. I’m dumb but not that dumb.
Great ask from the Meteorologist, and should not be too much to ask for in an ideal world. However those people who ask those questions such as "What about Jasper" are honestly too far gone to help. If they cannot use their smartphone, which contains more knowledge than anyone in the world has, to locate an adjacent county or use a different app to track weather, then they kind of deserve what's coming for them.
I'm a geographer. God helped me get a Bachelors from the Univ. of North Alabama. So I get what you are saying. I just can't believe how hard it apparently is to maybe download Google Earth, type in your city name, and just start exploring the area around you. Or even just use Google Maps (no download required) and spend a few minutes learning the places around your town. It's not that hard! And it doesn't take that long. lol. Trust me. It wasn't until my senior year that I actually started having some challenging classes. Geography is not difficult. lol.
@@SuperSirianRigel I'm planning to, I already have the knowledge of Central Oklahoma. I have self-taught myself the general location of Oklahoma. And when I'm tracking Supercells, I name them after the nearest town, so I know which one is which.
@@SvrWxArchive1807 I was going to give a thumbs down but didn't want to give the wrong impression. That is just disappointing though. I've seen comedy bits where hosts ask random people to locate a place on a map. The amount of incorrect answers was so high I thought they were scripted.
Sounds like a family member lol. seriously though find out where you are related to other towns, etc. it could mean the difference between life & death. Thanks, James Spann
Honestly when people ask that Whatabout question. They simply wanna engage with James most likely. The majority of people I know can take one look at the map and know where they are within 2-3 miles. Simply based on there location to a highway. I use maps way more now then when we used paper maps. But I refuse to use gps. I just look at the streets on a map and program my brain. The reason is everyone I see use a gps they spend more time missing turns because the triangulation of the gps isn’t fast enough. Had they just looked at the street or exit name they would’ve known what to be looking for.
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future. For our children.

I can probably pinpoint my house on a map down to the tee. I'm glad you brought this to light.
I bet I could place a dot on a map that is at most 10 miles away from my house
