- dark eyes-ochi chorniye...one of the most impressive versions by the all time greats of jazz...dizzy gillespie(t),stan getz(ts),sony stitt(as),john lewis(p),ray brown(b),herb ellis(g),stan levey(d) recorded in LA oct.16,1956....LP purchased in Philadelpihia..south street Tower records..1984...still sounds great...
about the song which is believed to be a russian gypsy tune:
Dark Eyes (Russian: Очи чёрные, Ochi chyornye; The lyrics of the song were written by a Ukrainian poet and writer Yevhen Hrebinka. The first publication of the poem was in Literaturnaya gazeta on 17 January 1843.
The words were subsequently set to Florian Hermann's Valse Hommage (in an arrangement by S. Gerdel') and published as a romance on 7 March 1884.
Although often characterised as a Russian gypsy song, the words and music were written respectively by a Ukrainian poet and a German composer: Florian Hermann. Feodor Chaliapin popularised the song abroad in a version amended by himself....from wikipedia
ONE OF THE BEST JAZZ RECORDINGS I HAVE EVER HEARD. GETZ IS AT HIS BEST. SO IS DIZZ AND SONNY.
With Sonny Stitt!!!
One of the great jazz albums. Everyone needs to soak this in. Good for the soul.
Fantastic cut!! Who takes the honors: Stitt, Gillespie, or Getz? I think Sonny Stitt is sensational on this: every note is perfectly hit, his technique is impeccable and I honestly believe he had a "perfect" alto sax sound. He makes all the treacherous runs sound like its a child's play. He really was underrated!! Stan Getz is probably my favorite tenor sax player. He doesn't disappoint here: this is vintage Getz!! Gillespie shows his patented licks and high notes. My choice: Stitt...
Don't forget the excellent drumming by ex-boxer, Stan Levey on this. He and Ray Brown drive this along with great gusto. But it's Sonny Stitt that really excels.
beautiful tune. actually first heard this tune on the album " for musicians only " . getz is smooth as silk.
Stan Getz! What a sound! Technique and inspiration as well. Too bad Dizzy was cut. As a trumpet player, makes me sad but UA-cam only lets you do so much. Thanks for posting this piece, it is a gem
reunion des meilleurs jazzmen!le top du top! merci du partage
the best jazz interpretation of dark eyes ...
I would say that Cesária Evora has the best interpretation of this song.
Ok, I've died and gone to heaven. No one will touch Django and his descendents on the guitar; but those horns!!!!!
RAY BROWN IS DOING IT BIG TIME.
Oh, sweet! Thank you for uploading this. You beat me to it though! I'll try to beat you to some other jazz treats (uploads)!! ;)
Awesome.TY ddg for posting.
Nice way you shift and feature the LP album art-work.
Oh... Great!!!!
Sonny Stitt kicks ass! (first sax solo)
first solo is Stan
unfortunately youtube will not let posts of more than 10 mins.....i tried for the whole thing
@jazzeuphoria looks like you already have ...with villa-lobos.....no:5...hauntingly beautiful melody...
Great tune! Hello from Ukraine! Thanks for the info about the song. P.S. I knew it could not be russian.
i want to now get down
@Nonettegetz Thanks for the info! I was misled by the articulation - Getz is usually much more mellow (and there were some mouthpiece/reed problems there too). I do like the first solo more; the second solo seems to be lacking in new ideas, sounds a bit repetitve. BTW, how do you know with such conviction who played which solo?
This is not the complete song- it cuts off after about 2/3 of the song has played.
2 bad bc this song, along with "Lover Come Back to Me" (with the same personnel) comprises one of the swingingest album sides of jazz recorded. The under appreciated Stitt is 2 much.
OMG!!...and the last 3 minutes??!!!! are amazing!! what happened??
Getz first solo then Stitt
SWINGIN!!!
i like the alternate take better..
これ以上何がある?
