Jess, I just want you to know what a blessing you have been to me lately. My husband and I had a 40 acre off grid homestead the we recently moved off of due to me being diagnosed with cancer. I was raised on a ranch and have always had horses and grew up rodeoing and at the time it was heartbreaking to feel like we lost so much progress. But watching a lot of your videos, you reminded me to use this time as a classroom and to gain even more knowledge while I'm stuck in bed. I adore your family and your bright smile, cheerful attitude, and walks through your garden helps me feel like I get to go outside again. Thank you and bless you and your beautiful family!
Praying for you as you journey through this unexpected season of life! From a peer of the same upbringing and lifestyle, having times in our lives that redirect us can be challenging, as I've also experienced losing my life time Ranching husband to cancer over 17 yrs ago, then raised our son as a widow with a variety of country home settings as God moved us around with Blessings among all of them because of having the right attitude! I will keep you in my prayers sweet Lady for a full recovery and that your dreams will continue to blossom! 🥰🤠🐴🐮🌷💞🙏
One thing I love about my local nursery is they lock away all frost tender plants until risk of frost is gone. They have a seperate full greenhouse blocked off with a window in the door and a sign that lists what they have with a "Come back after the frost! Est. Open date is X, check the forecast!" They don't actually sell out of that greenhouse, it's employees only and they wheel the plants outside to the other display greenhouses, but it's a great way to let new gardeners see they have them when the big box stores push them out and when they can to expect to buy/plant them.
Jess, your pavilion space surrounded by the raised gardens is just spectacular! I’m picturing a warm Summer evening where you are surrounded by some lanterns and you and your husband are enjoying an evening cocktail. Relaxing, connecting, and reflecting on all you’ve both accomplished. Let one of your gorgeous cats sit on a lap as you’re in the moment. It’s purring will validate you done good!

I listen faithfully. I love the podcasts.. can you talk more about the diet your on..I know it's an anti-inflammatory diet..similar to what Justin Rhodes did???
In January I got a load of compsted horse manure. I didn't let my dad add it to the garden until I grew a few beans in a pot of it under my grow lights. Thankfully the beans did great. My dad is 74 and is still convinced that all the chemical burns off in the sun.
I would prickle out the asparagus into pots and grow them on to sell/give away/plant elsewhere. What lovely volunteers from the ultimate spring veggie!
I had a good laugh when you listed out all of Jamie Fraiser’s middle names perfectly 😅 I had no idea that’s who he was named after. What a bonnie wee lad that kit is!
I needed a smile after work and that did it for me too. I've been loving the podcast, I hope Jess does an episode with some other fiction book recommendations!
I love the episode of Outlander where Jamie sees a slide magnified the first time and calls them “wee beasties”. My little yorkie is now a wee beastie.
You have such a positive disposition and your smile is with your entire face! It’s beautiful to watch you light up with joy! I love your videos, I’m learning so much! Thank you!
Even Charles Dowding had trouble with boughten contaminated bagged soil. So he always sets up a test growing beans to check it out before investing all the time and seed to bagged/boughten soil. Thanks Jess for digging in and tackling this problem that so many people are experiencing! We all need a plan!
It's such an odd experience to watch you pick fresh veg from your garden without taking a bite, and describing it to us in beautiful, flowery language 🌱
You go girl you look so healthy now. When you got that first cow got that double chin drinking milk. Inflamation for adults who drink milk I stopped when I saw what it did to you my skin cleared up. OMG you are my pandemic friend love learning from you . Im 62 you are someone who helps interesting new good mornings help many. Thanks Ang
I think I can speak for all of us watching in our classroom, you are not too excited. You have the appropriate amount of excitement seeing your dreams fulfilled!
I'm laughing at (with?) your comment about planting after your last frost date. I live in the high desert of Southern California (Near Palm Springs). Our last frost date is February 10. We had SNOW March 1. And it doesn't normally snow here at all! And the crazy thing is that since I've lived here: 12 years now, our coldest daytime weather is in March!
I love my asparagus. That's one of my favorite vegetables. I usually preserve mine in water until I get a bunch like the grocery store and then I cook for the family. It's delicious
1. Yes all our pets have several nicknames 2. You have made me wonder if a soil contamination issue was responsible for the catastrophic death of every example I had of a 30 year old Swedish Ivy. I repotted them all because they were getting rootbound, and they all died. If I hadn’t given cuttings to my dad & stepmother years ago I wouldn’t have been able to salvage anything. Thankfully they made a great recovery. Thanks for pushing through those tough days. I don’t know how you ever have enough spoons to do what you do ❤
💖So glad you decided to pick up your camera and take us along on your walk. Nice to see all that continues to go on in your garden. Will be looking forward to seeing you again soon! Take care. ❇❇❇
Hi Jess, your show on asparagus was so good, but there is a reason it comes up in abundance early in spring. Farmers looked for and grew it for the mineral content. They would eat processed canned food all winter. In the spring they were hungry for nutrition that comes from veggie sources. Asparagus cleans your kidneys and urinary tract. So good for you.
Thank you for the update concerning your soil, and kudos for spreading your knowledge about using "canaries" to test small amounts of new soil before use. I use a 12-seed cover on all of my beds before planting value crops; however, I also use the same seed mix in a small container before building beds with new soil to understand how the seeds react within the soil. Moreover, the seed mix is my baseline/constant. Appreciated!
Thanks for hanging out with us, Jess. I was sipping my tea while we walked through your garden. My favourite scent is jasmine flowers, so I'm very excited about your pavilion plans and had visions of what it will look and smell like sitting under there in years to come! Wow... And the greenhouse all lit up in the evening is just stunning with the sunset in the background too... What a treat. Thanks for the reminder about the beans, I'm making a note in my garden planner for my future balcony garden. The apartment is under construction so it will be a couple of years before I can have my first growing season on that balcony, but I'm planning while I'm in my classroom 😉👍 and you've just reminded me that maybe I should not wait to set up the balcony in the year I want to grow in it, but get the soil in and tested right away so I have the year leading up to my first growing season to remediate and improve soil health if necessary. You're a blessing, Jess. ❤🙏
Jess, your inspirational words and guidance has made changes in me that I didn't even know I needed. I am a good 10 years older than you, but feel much like a young student when you share your hard-earned wisdom with us. Well, my classroom is about to change. My whole lifestyle is changing. My husband excepted a job today in SC. We are going to be on our way soon. And I can't wait to shop at your business and drink coffee in the presence of your hopes and dreams that came true. Thank you for everything.
I have been growing asparagus in the big pots for couple of years. This year I have been eating from the garden. You are right, picking from the garden and eating it, totally different experience. I am sorry that you can't eat it which I have enjoyed watching your old videos. But health is important to take care. Thank you for the video.
We just put up a half of a pergola (L- shaped) around the outer edge of my front yard paver patio. I've been designing and planning and working towards this for the last 6 months so it's so exciting to see it come together. I feel your excitement! We are attaching 2' tall raised beds to the bottom of the pergola and solar powered string lights will go across the top beams. I am also putting shorter raised beds on either side of the wide pathway (that connects the sidewalk to the patio) and am connecting them with an arched trellis. You've inspired me to be more active, to create a lovely space, and to connect with local gardeners and found neighbors that are so similar to my hubby and I. Hi, Kelly (and Dan!)..if you ever see this!
Thank you for turning the camera on! I have grown asperagus from seed for a couple years now. Those tiny miniature stocks just tickle me so much. I would say those are probably dropped seeds. replanting somewhere would get you a lot more food with very little effort!
I have a ton of channels I pick up and throw out. I picked you up because of raw beauty kristy from her sister channel for sweet life of Zack and Kristy. I have been watching you ever since. I started watching you before the pandemic. The reason I keep watching you is because you keep me trying to garden. I have heck with my tomatoes but I have never given up because I love tomatoes and would give anything to have tomatoes I can slice up and eat in a tomato sandwiches all summer long. So I keep trying. Hi from Mobile Al.
I'm excited to see the newest bean test results!! And let's talk about the role that mushroom mycelium is playing too! OH! And CAN'T forget the inoculated BIOCHAR!! (Yes, inoculated biochar is a redundant term! I just like saying, and playing, with ALL the soil things!!!)
my bed of asparagus is 10yrs old...over time ive had many reseeded plants...my original crowns grow spears as thick as my thumb...i now swim in asparagus...the only maintence I give them is fresh compost in the spring..when the weeds get overwhelming..just chop and drop with the weed wacker..and the process goes on and on..
I harvested seed from our asparagus and saved them. I planted them in a flat about a month ago and I have tiny little asparagus also. It’s so exciting. 😊
WOW!!! That is one amazingly beautiful crocheted afghan Bruce is snuggled on! The yarn, the colors, the workmanship - I'm inspired and reminded how rewarding this craft can be... oh, right, there's a video full of gardening content to enjoy now. Right. But priorities! (LOL, crochet gets me every time...)
Jess, thank you for the bean experiment tip! I'm going to get some composted manure from my friend's farm. Her husband died last fall, so she really doesn't know what all the cows may have eaten, so I will try the bean test for sure! Thanks for showing us how you just don't feel like taking on the world one day, but just getting up & out there is such a blessing! God Bless!!!
Hey Jess! Im doing carnivore, too! Wow! I had NO IDEA how bad I felt until I started feeling SO GOOD on Carnivore! Three weeks in and my high BP is almost normal and my huge insulin resistance belly is almost gone. So happy!
Thank you Jess. Did you see the warning for gardeners in Martinez CA to not eat anything from their gardens. The Martinez mining Co dropped toxic metal dust all over their community. Thank you for reminding us of your experience last year. Alerting each other is so beneficial. Bless your family.🙏❤️
Thank you Jess. I’m a very good gardener - I’ve always bought my plants as starts. This year I have a brand new greenhouse- my seeds are started in the house because we have about 2 foot of snow yet but my collected seeds are germinating! I’m so proud! I gave tomatoes germinating after only 7 days! No peppers yet but I’m hopeful. 🌶🍅
We did the name thing with our son. Depending on his mood he was either sweetie pie, stick pot, sour pickle, sweetie pumpkin, or scooter pie. And he was all of those sometimes all in the same day. We also did the food choice thing on birthdays and as he got older he got wiser. We wouldn’t let him have sugared cereals on a regular basis but on his birthday he always requested fruit loops or Honey Nut Cheerios because he knew we wouldn’t throw them out after one serving so he got to have then till they ran out. We lost him in an auto accident when he was 19 so your video brought back some pleasant memories. Thanks.
My family started choosing what we would like to eat on our birthdays way back when I was 12, 50 decades ago and I still fix that same meal for myself on my birthday! I’ve actually done this for my husband for each of his birthday’s! It is a fun tradition! Mine has ALWAYS been Curried Meatballs w/ sauce, green beans, rice and then a homemade blackberry cobbler!
It would be cool if you could press some leaf shapes into the wet concrete from plants in your garden or house. A sweet ode to the wonderful things growing on your farm. Love watching your journey. ❤🌱🪴
Actually, at "Whole Foods" many years ago I was introduced to a salad which except for the dressing consisted of ONLY RAW SHAVED ASPARAGUS (using a carrot peeler) and it was DELICIOUS! The dressing/marinade was fresh lemon juice and Extra virgin Olive oil mixed with raw garlic, salt and pepper. You could also add parmesan cheese and or other herbs.
My kids also gotto pick there birthday dinner. They still do and they are in their forties. Now their spouses get to pick also and all the grandkids. Last year my grandson requested cocktail franks wrapped in cresvent rolls with french fries and corn.
I'm So GLAD you turned the camera on. I enjoyed hanging out with you! I shared it with my 2 sisters. You just gave me the ok to turn my camera on when I don't feel like and that was just the thing I needed. Always find something great hanging with you! Your pets names are the most fabulous thing I've heard. We have a dog and 11 cats that I film and I think we need a video saying all their crazy names. Falcor was my favorite. Much love!
I'm so sorry about your plants being in contaminated soil. I always test my soil with lettuce, because there are so many broadleaf herbicides being used these days. If there are broadleaf herbicides in the soil the lettuce will grow narrow twisted leaves. Best of luck this year. Your property is shaping up beautifully.
I absolutely love your videos. Your channel has been a blessing to me and my family! You have inspired me to grow a larger garden, preserve what we grow, & we are raising chickens also. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy watching them! ❤️ from a fellow south carolina mama!
We’re all so happy about your pavilion, Jess! And the flagstone, and the jasmine, and the hilarious plethora of names you have for your cats! 😂 This is joyful 😄
Thanks for making us a video! I really enjoy hanging out with you! I almost always learn something as a bonus! I hope your soil will grow wonderful tomatoes for you this year!
That's funny, I do the same things for my kids. All year long the kids eat meals I make, and I know I made a good dinner when one of the kids yells, I want those for my birthday dinner. Lol
Happy Birthday to your boys! I remember that is what my Mom did for our birthdays. We got to choose want was for dinner and dessert. It's something I do for my family now.
Carolina jasmine will look wonderful around your pavilion! I fell in love with the plant several years ago, when I first visited my sister in Jacksonville, NC. We went hiking on some nearby trails, and kept seeing this beautiful yellow flower growing wild. We’re from Michigan, so neither of us knew what it was. I finally found some in the garden section at Lowes, with a tag identifying it. I looked it up online to see if I could grow it in Michigan, but unless I build a greenhouse, it won’t grow here. So, if you grow it around your pavilion, be sure to take lots of video of it so we inhabitants of the frigid north can enjoy it! Thanks! 🙂
My wife and I would look forward to videos this year on what you did for soil remediation, what that looks like a year out; what you think worked and what didn't. I'm with you; I'd be a threat to put all of those asparagus seedlets out someplace, anyplace, away from the animals and the mowing lanes, to see what happens next.
Super interested to hear the many ways you guys have tried to remediate the soil contamination. Healing soil is such an interesting subject to me. Although, sad to have to deal with it in the first place; the fact that we can heal it holds so much hope
Jess, I just want you to know what a blessing you have been to me lately. My husband and I had a 40 acre off grid homestead the we recently moved off of due to me being diagnosed with cancer. Praying for as easy a recovery as possible for you. Hopefully this period is a time of rest and acquiring knowledge for you and your family.
Bless you. I pray you are better soon and back at the homestead enjoying all the lovely things in life. ❤
Praying for you too precious lady.
Thank you all so much, your prayers are so appreciated and truly a blessing!
Praying for you as you journey through this unexpected season of life! Lol!!! Chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side?!?! I love him!
It always starts or ends my day wonderfully when you are the person I am watching.. thank you

So great to know one can use one little plant to save the whole crop! Thanks for encouraging us and calming our insecurities

Volunteer plants always do the best in my garden for some reason .
You are Peace, Love, and Joy!
Chicken still frozen, luv it. Been there done that🙂.
Clearly there are a few of us Outlander fans who love Roots and Refuge as well! ❤
Outlander and Roots and Refuge have a lot in common, no? Lots of growing your own food and living a more simple natural life?
Same! It made me really happy
Thank you!
I love that you named your cat after Outlander. Literally my favorite book of all time.
I LOVE it when you just go with the day and watch you inspire yourself about what you want to share - it so inspires me❤️
Oh Jess, you just wrote another children's book! "The Littlest Asparagus" ☺ The jasmine is a wonderful idea, it will give the pavilion a lovely crown.
Thanks Ang
My husband is the exact same! Supportive spouses are a massive blessing. There's always eggs to eat when meat is still frozen!
Yes, eggs will always save the day! I'm making a veggie & cheese frittata right now cus I forgot to take meat out this morning.
We've had an asparagus bed for 15 years. We let it go to seed every year so the seeds keep new growth cycle. Your garden excitement is amazing 👏 😍
I think I can speak for all of us watching in our classroom, you are not too excited. You have the appropriate amount of excitement seeing your dreams fulfilled!

Thanks for pushing through those tough days. I don’t know how you ever have enough spoons to do what you do ❤
You were showing the pavilion and I had this random thought of your grandkids playing under there in the beautiful space you created.
💖So glad you decided to pick up your camera and take us along on your walk. Nice to see all that continues to go on in your garden. Will be looking forward to seeing you again soon! Take care. ❇❇❇
The beautiful garden and farm you have created is such an inspiration to me. You're absolutely glowing! This garden season looks good on you!
Hi Jess, your show on asparagus was so good, but there is a reason it comes up in abundance early in spring. Farmers looked for and grew it for the mineral content. Asparagas....none of it makes it to the house. 😊 that is my garden snack. Love it.
R and R at it's finest. God is incredible

A BIG pineapple welcome to the Palmetto state!
Heavily sowed and then separated my tomato plants this year for the first time. Thanks for dropping that knowledge!!!
You gave me a lift yesterday and today. Thank you.

I germinated some Mary Washington Asparagus for my mom and I was just tickled at the cute, tiny stalks. So fun.
Can't wait to see the build on the raised boxes!! Yay Miah
Tiny asparagus...love it. Contaminated soil makes me feel so angry. Thanks for the tip to plant beans.
I'm excited to see the newest bean test results!!
And let's talk about the role that mushroom mycelium is playing too!

Thanks Jess, I needed that reminder about planting beans as a soil tester.
Sounds Great!!! :-)
Jess your green house is so stunning in the dark 😍.
Absolutely love when you use Jamie's full name! I have a wee Fergus kitty.
Cute lil asparagus ❤
Mmmmm, that sounds absolutely wonderful!
My kids also gotto pick there birthday dinner. They still do and they are in their forties. Now their spouses get to pick also and all the grandkids. Last year my grandson requested cocktail franks wrapped in cresvent rolls with french fries and corn.
Love the Outlander reference! I’ve been watching it this week
Much love!
That needs to be a T-shirt: You Go, tiny asparagus! 🤩
Wow, what a great tip! Thanks for sharing this.
I'm so sorry about your plants being in contaminated soil. I always test my soil with lettuce, because there are so many broadleaf herbicides being used these days. If there are broadleaf herbicides in the soil the lettuce will grow narrow twisted leaves. Best of luck this year. Your property is shaping up beautifully.
thats honestly as big as the asparagus that i have grown from seed! but soon it will grow amazing! I hope our micro asparagus foerver!
I started my asparagus from seed this year, and when I saw the tiny asparagus babies, this was my exact reaction. They’re just so cute!
Same!! 😍
Loved seeing the lights in the greenhouse and barn in the background, so beautiful.
I think if you go back through the videos over the past several months, she addressed the different remedies they worked on.
I think u may be excited because it feels like home😉🥰
