"Why don't presidents fight the wars?/Why do they always send the poor?" One of the great anti war lyrics of all time. I see this as a successor to "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath.

10:19 Yes they play it Live, but with the 3 part Vocal harmonies it's different, I don't know how they do it nowadays, but when they toured for this album Serj had 2 mics on stage, one mic is high pitched and sounds like a chipmunk and the other mic is just his normal main mic, when that Chorus comes in Daron harmonizes with Serj, but Serj sings into both mics he has, so it is 3 harmonies in the end but the high vocal is just a chipmunk voice, its not really loud so it doesn't annoy that much, but I do think its a pretty weird and unique way to do it. Btw the music video is censored and at 11:37 they say ''where the fuck are you''. I know you aren't into swear words that much, but I think it is pretty understandable to swear and get anger out on such a serious topic. 13:15 yes it was their goal for it to be chaotic someone said the catchy chorus represents the illusions and distractions we are fed, which fits. In the chorus they say ''Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time Dancing in the desert, blowing up the sunshine'' and “Blowing up the sunshine” means something like how all the bombs exploding during war seem to look like sunrises. And when it goes back into the chaos thing its basically where reality hits. 16:20 They are saying ''Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor''. 22:17 Serj did the Low vocals and the high vocals on this track, Daron (the guitarist) is the third voice, he first comes in in the second chorus. Live when they toured for this album they definitely delivered the energy and everything, but some things were different. John (the drummer) plays some parts of the song a little differently and Serj uses 2 mics for the harmonies (+ daron still singing with him of course). As I'm saying I don't know if they still perform it like that or if they deliver the energy nowadays as good as back then, but its a great song and they definitely did it justice when this was new. Great reaction.

System of a down's whole musical concept is controlled chaos. Sometimes more, sometimes less. And I think it's not for everyone. But I think from all the bands doing what they do, they are maybe the most catchy one. They kinda turn the rules of metal songwriting upside/down and still give you some great melodies and harmonies. Here's a short video, showing their Producer (Rick Rubin) and what he has to say about their style. "They didn't fit, but they were so good, that they transcended "not fitting"".

  • @heathkeim3394
    @heathkeim3394 2 роки тому +16

I’ve said it before on your soad reviews…they’ll grow on you if you give them a chance. I think they’ve grabbed you. Now, keep going down that rabbit hole! You won’t regret it. Most of their music is that organized chaos.
    Couple tidbits:
I don’t know this for sure but it’s rumored that the lead singer was a burgeoning opera performer before ditching it for this. You can tell he has some vocal training regardless.
Soad is much like Rage Against the Machine in that their lyrics greatly supplement the musical talent. They’re very anti establishment/anti war, and if you support that sort of thing (and pay attention to lyrics) you’ll appreciate them even more.
This bands music is wonderfully engineered. The album material is superior to live. The albums are a trip. Their live shows are still enjoyable…just not the same experience.
The entire band is made up of Armenian immigrants. They never seemed to give two craps about ditching the accents for commercial purposes and I applaud them for it. I’d recommend you do the same thing with the stopwatch. Don’t change who you are to appease the masses. Your show is reactions, reviews, and RANTS. That’s why we enjoy your show.

I can’t wait for the day you finally check out the band Spiritbox. I think you will truly love the instrumentals and Courtney’s vocals. I have no doubt they would end up all over your playlists if given the chance. I would recommend Constance for the first song, it’s the most beautifully written and performed “heavy” song I have ever heard. The song has special meaning to Courtney and many others who have dealt with loved ones with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. I myself have dealt with this and it’s absolutely heart wrenching to look back upon and knowing I should have done more, but at the time I was young and selfish. I can’t even fully comprehend what it must be like for them either, forgetting everything and everyone you have ever known. The song always tears me up, I won’t lie. Put it on the list and I might see it 3 years from now, I’ll still be here. Much love, thanks David.

Repetition is emphasis...I never seen you get "lost"...Keep the timer if you like the pressure--but, imo, you don't need it. I think the 5min rant timer is a good idea. Timers work well in many situations, including transitions for those on the spectrum. I do think though there should be exceptions... 5min should be a goal, not a rule. For example, when you did reaction to Ghost Love Score, there is no way 5min would have been enough.... be focused perhaps; yet be YOU!

Bit late to the party here. The way I understand the song, the melodic parts of the song is how war is sold to young soldiers and the “chaos” is the reality of war. If I’m correct organised chaos is more planned that you realise.

You would be great at giving honest critiques to unsigned artist trying to hone in on their song writing skills. But you'd have to be brave enough to submit your own music to that level of scrutiny. I think it would be worth it if one was serious enough at trying to figure out what songs would make the cut for a demo or to go back to the drawing board and fine tune their songs.

Okay, so I have seen a lot of reactions to this song (fun one to see people get shocked by) including a good few musicians, composers, vocal coaches, etc and watched them be really confused by what is going on musically. Leave it to a metalhead (I don't know your channel but you are clearly a metalhead) to actually pick up on why it works

Someday you should check out Serj on his Elect The Dead solo concert, especially the track Sky Is Over for his La Is Las live
. . . It made my respect for his vocal talent raise like three levels. Was kinda on the fence before listening to that, became huge fan of it after. You are right, his voice fits the style of music the band plays perfectly, but he has much more range then the band's music will allow
. . . If possible, listen to album version before live version. I guarantee you will find it worth while

@Siegfried Sieger lol. In Australia byob would be considered evil loud music. Then they'd pay attention to the lyrics and decide thats why they hated it in the 1st place and become pro conscription to spite it. Then talk up "real" metal music like Nothing Else Matters, Sweet Child O Mine and Thunderstruck (also I think I heard some boomer in the recent hysteria tour proclaim Def Leppard is the heaviest "we'll all hear in concert"). Pray for us and the 2000 people that showed up at the Judas Priest concert. In the 20,000 capacity venue. For the Painkiller tour

We buy the products that feed the war machine. That money goes to fund our overblown military budget and if the government needs more they just raise taxes. Meanwhile veterans starve in the streets or take their own lives. When I was in the military I used to blare this in the company parking lot. Nobody got it... I was just another soldier listening to metal music... If you don't get the irony of that I can't help you
