R.I.P. Ann Waychoff, Mother of the Nightwish Army..... this will always be YOUR song !!
R.I.P Ann Waychoff
I have waited for a long long long time for a reactor to give respect to Jukka's passion at the beginning of this song!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you David!!!!!! That's what makes him my all time favorite! He doesn't just play drums..... he plays to the crowd!!!!
Was the song I thought of when Dvaid mentioned Jukka standing before. YES!!
It's very unfair that such a talented drummer can't play. I hope he will come back one day.
RIP ANN. This is her song. Thanks David, awesome reaction as usual! I’m so grateful you’re my friend. Can’t wait to meet the missus!!!
Jen is here...omg. RIP Ann Waychoff
Trust me we're looking forward to it as well. FEELIN' YOU Jen!!!

@@Belugamori well hello!!! 😊 WE WERE HERE!!!
I also like when he spins the cymbal after the choke .
Jukka is one of the most expressive drummers , incredible showman behind the kit .
Jukka's showmanship is one of the reasons I loved him as a drummer and miss him in Nightwish. No disrespect to Kai as he's a phenomenal drummer himself but I miss Jukka's style choices. FYI Jukka also stands whilst drumming at the end of Romanticide too! Stay safe 🤘 ✌
Whenever I was at a Nightwish concert, my eyes could never leave Jukka. His energy is off the charts. I miss that guy dearly.

Ann was a big Nightwish Fan.
And every new person who listened to NW, she went through a little chat.
And gave them some info about NW.
This was her favorite song.
And this song belongs to her.
I like very much that Gabriel have continue Ann s work.... so her heritage is still here.
For me, there is nothing more showmanship and attention-grabbing than Floor, her every move is divine.
What a nice way to spend my lunch today. Song of myself is one of my absolute favourites from Nightwish :) Got my coffee ready! You are definitely one of my favourite reactors David. All the best to you
You are right about Wagner. Wagner loved big instruments, big sounds, Allmost to a point to "scare" people, surprise them. That's what Tuomas is doing also in writing the music
Hello David,
About the part Marko starting the verse and passing it to Floor - I believe it's a nod to the studio version, where Marko start like here and then Anette takes over, but mixing in album version is done so well I can never say where the passing occurs. Anette had obviously different tembre so maybe their voices blended even better. Why have they decided to do it like this on album? We can only guess but it sounds amazing to me.
Keep up the good work and stay healthy! Cheers
The audio engineering in the studio version has Marko’s “ohhhhhh” transition come in from a really quiet fade-in to very front and center in the mix. Not impossible to do live, but would seem out of place if the front of house sound guys created more fade than what he does naturally with his on vocals.
Marko did the same thing live that he did on the album for the this part, the only difference is in doing it live verse with minimal post-production vs doing in a studio with lots of post production. I don’t think Annette doubles with Marko, pretty sure he vocal doubles with himself on that transition.
As for the purpose of it: it’s a transition for the transition. After the chorus there is the short post-chorus where the main chorus music drops out and it’s just the dissonant keys and strings, Marko’s “ohhhhh” slide up is a way to transition into big sound that comes back in with the verse. Think of Marko’s slide as serving the purpose of a musical instrument, not as a vocal line connected to the verse that immediately follows with Anette/Floor’s vocals.
Hello David. Interesting reaction, I enjoyed it. This is an awesome song and performance by them, I totally agree with you. It was inspired by Tuomas Holopainen's favourite poet Walt Whitman and his famous poem of the same name. This is what Tuomas said about it: "I wanted to pay homage to him and do the lyrics in a way that he would possibly write. It's a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis - especially the spoken-word part." Talking about the spoken-word part, it's a six-minute recitation of a poem, which was not in this live performance, for obvious reasons. It's absolutely worth listening to though. It’s hard, it’s edgy, but it’s also beautiful. In my opinion, it really completes the song. If you want to listen to it, have a look at this video ua-cam.com/video/RzxRHF50sMc/v-deo.html
And There, Forever Remains That Change From G To E Minor... R.I.P. Ann Waychoff
Not afraid to admit that I'm late to the Nightwish party but glad that I'm here, finally. Have downloaded some Nightwish for me to enjoy and so far that's what I'm doing. This song was very refreshing and had a great feel and great breaks and flowed. Really impressed with the arrangement and the use of dynamics. Great song and I see nothing wrong with your score.
Me too. Listening to Nightwish got me through 2020 and 2021. Found them in Jan 2020. My eldest son was diagnosed about that time with stage 4 lung cancer. He passed at the end of April 2020. I took him to all his chemo and radiation treatments. I also had several health issues in both years. Thanks to Nightwish my sanity is still with me.
I concur
Love jukka! Another drummer with showmanship ....of course my mind goes straight to Pau from the warning. Both high energy, play with attitude, and don't just sit behind the kit aloof.
Again a Insightfull Reaction and Analysis. Seriously, i think i learn something about the Art of Music watching you reactions, thank you.
R.I.P Ann Waychoff mother of the Nightwish Army. June 28th, 2020
This is your song.
If you ever have to explain the Groove in Metal to someone - play this tune.
Until the Breakdown hits you with a 10 ton hammer it is all fun and games.
But then the slow chugging monster with the machine gun riffing takes over.
And for every Metal Head this lights up the day.
Awesome….Imho one of the best songs ever.
Sometimes the sky is piano black….
Floor Jansen, First of Her Name, Queen of the Valkyries and Stonehenge, Lady of Nightwish and Protector of our Metal Realm. Long may she reign. Bow, mortal !
I've always thought Wagner was a more appropriate comparison, so thanks for the validation. But "Metal Wagner" doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? TBH I don't care for Wagner that much, but Tuomas, I can listen to all day.
Love the baseball analogy. To build on that, haha, considering the song before this on the setlist was the grand slam (Ghost Love Score) a double is a great follow up. Something I love about this band is everyone plays in service to the music, the song comes first. As for Floor, she was born to do this and what I am always impressed with is that she doesn't over-embellish on her vocals. What she does fits the song and storytelling (not her ego or need to show off). And glad you keep bringing up Soilwork - Let This River Flow featuring Floor is one of my absolute favourite songs (and wearing pants she does a power stance with a foot on the monitor there, Marko however did that wearing a kilt in the Ayreon - Age of Shadows....)
The Mozart thing is more because of the universal recognition of the name Mozart, I think. Like Shakespeare, Einstein... it's just to avoid having to give an extra explanation given the declining levels of education these days. 'Wagner?, Chaucer? Feynman? Who?'
Great song and great reaction, DH. The amazing thing about this song is that it immediately follows Ghost Love Score in the Wacken 2013 set list. Floor's vocal endurance is off the charts.
they only stay in the half time feel in the live performances, because the studio version is about 7 minutes longer and completely changes after this part to a much softer and slower style. i highly recommend checking out the instrumental version of the song to truly understand what a genius composer Tuomas is. The last section makes me emotional every time and i'm sad it's never played live
Emppu is also a marshall arts medalist. That stance is easy for him.
My absolute favorit song. And of the God Mother of our Nightwish army. RIP Ann! And yeah….Tuomas is our metal Mozart. But i agree with you….here hè was Wacken Wagner 😂
Thanks DH!
I'm a HUGE fan of Jukka and appreciate your recognition of his passion for performing.
I won't argue your Wagner comparison, but I think the Mozart comparison is more of a 'level of writing' and not style. On the same level as a Mozart...
I also agree with your score...9.4...
The showmanship at this event is absolutely top tier. The production, the performance and the engineering is next level.
All members are really masters within their specialty. They've achieved a level of excellence that is unmatched at Wäcken.
my favourite performance from them
Again, a great reaction. Very perceptive the comment that Tuomas is more like Wagner than Mozart. I suspect that the designation Metal Mozart was chosen more in the sense of Metal Genius. But Metal Wagner is more appropriate.
I knew you would love this. 😄 Wagner is definitely a good comparison, but I feel he also has the cinematic, atmospheric, evocative vibes of Grieg.
And yes, I do believe that last note Floor hit was a very divine G5. She's good at those.
G5 confirmed. 🤘
Yes, she is infectious 😇😇😇.
They all are.
Always, very much appreciate your insights into our beloved band.
Hail Nightwish, house band of the Gods 😇😇😇
Great reaction as ever. I think there is one song, maybe Storytime from the same concert where Marco and Emppu are having a wide leg "dance off" for a few moments and Marco gives in. IIRC on "I wish I had an angel", Emppu's backside is nearly touching the stage he's that low!!
Marko also had his eyes on the drummer so that he could sync up 🤘🎸🎸
My favorite song of this concert. I miss Jukka and Marko. Thanks David for this reaction-lesson, and baseball analogy
This is one of my favorite Nightwish songs. Thanks for this reaction!
Why not have Marco sing that part?
He's more than capable & he sounds great! Marco is not just a one-trick-pony bass player, he's a capable singer/musician who supports & share's the vocals with Floor.
You can never hear too much Marko ❤️
The more I hear this song the more I like it.
Jukka caught my eyes ! I'm so glad you're on the same look !
This song is my favorite and there's not a lot of public captation. So thankful you react to this one !
Oh they came out of it! Perfectly!
I have always felt the Wagner connection so I agree with you there. Plus that ties in nicely with Floor being the Valkyrie lol
Yeah Wacken is a special place. it went upside down through metal. I lived there a few years, Metall is now the DNA of this Village^^
The showmanship of Marco is shaking his great head and amazing hair - that is an eyecatcher for me. And Floor wears pants in the first half of the Wacken concert - by the way.
Hi David
You are such a cool and down to earth guy and I really admire your profound knowledge of music. This is amazing and leaves me speechless everytime. Respect! 👏
Thank you for this great reaction. Looking forward to your next Nightwish reactions. 😎 Greetings from Switzerland
I think Tuomas acctually said he is influenced by Sibelius
Superb reaction/analysis, dude! So enjoyable! Hope we get to see P&TP and GSOE!
Have always loved how Jukka occasionally stands, and plays, and reacts to and with the audience. Yes, a great song. Love the strong cadence and visual head banging/hair whip action. Marko marching across the stage, in time to the music during the breakdown. Even Emppu as he walks(marches) in time when he goes to the front of Jukka and his kit. This whole concert is like a great TV series you can watch again and again, because you see, hear, or feel something 'different' each time. Many of us can listen to NW CDs, close our eyes, and see the performance in our minds eye. As always, great reaction. Hoping for a great year!
@@poncandn1 Off hand I remember High Hopes, End of an Era concert in 2005. Some say this one was because he was having migraine headaches. Same concert, Phantom of the Opera at the beginning of the song. I wish we had more video of Jukka preforming. He has always amazed me with his stage presence.
@@poncandn1
At Wacken, Song of Myself was played immediately after Ghost Love Score. Which makes it # 14 of 15 songs played.
It is another that has sections. They are listed as:
I- From a Dusty Bookshelf
II- All That Great Heart Lying Still
III- Piano Black
IV- Love
It is on the Imaginaerium album, which was written with Annette as lead singer. Every song at this show was written for either Tarja or Annette.
Always interested in the drummers, so Jukka's showmanship is something I noticed. The only other drummer I can think of offhand that does stand up and play to the crowd is AreJay Hale of Halestorm.
In the LP version, the song last some long minutes more with the end of the poem of Whiltman who's used in this one... not so simple, but cut to be played on stage
9.4? 😁 I'm glad David...It's also one of my favorite songs of theirs...I like how it starts, I love Marko's vocal extensions, and I love the slower, heavier part of the ending...and I'm not even a fan of metal! I've always been a Rock fan, my husband likes romantic music, I like rock 😅🤘...but I wasn't even interested in metal...and now with the discovery of Nightwish I'm starting to like their heavy parts and songs! ! 😁
Jukka's 4/4-type groove over the 7/4 was nice. Took me a few times to figure out what he was doing.
Hello David, great reaction and review as always. As a Nightwish fan, I've been watching your reactions/reviews since "Ghost Love Score", as they come, and by this time, I was expecting a score of 93, so I'm very glad with this 94. As always you explain your reasons for your scores. I'm now giving some insights: This song, came just after "Ghost Love Scrore" in this show, so, for me, there was not a big drop down in quality. You must remember, that your "Stage General" was still a gest vocalyst and not an official band member, what happend only after this show, so it makes me more impressed with her performance.
Crowd participation. The whole crowd was clapping in unison before the song even started properly.
....yeah. and if the crowd ever felt short in headbanging during the concert, this song gave 'em plenty of time after the break-down, to get themselves inside out.
I guess I am on the same page with you. Jukka standing up at the beginning is always what caught my eye, and got me thinking "uh-oh the drummer's standing up, something's going to happen". And yes, showmanship is also the precise word that pops in my head with that.
Guess I am getting pretty old here! lol... Great reaction David
Hannes Van Dahl from Sabaton stands quite often for showmanship.
9.4 is a great score. One of my favorite NW songs.
great job again, mr. Heretic! This is one of my favorites too. Somehow the "Metal Mozart" has bothered me a bit and now that you said it it is obvious that Wagner would suite better or even Tchaikovsky.
One of my Favs by them .....Marko and Floor sound so good together .
Midnight flight into the Covington Woods..Love this song 🔥🤘❤️ Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you, David, thank you thank you thank you..Finally somebody that leaves the mold and doesn't just stick to what everybody's most familiar with...Everyone knows Mozart, and I understand he's favorite to most, but..the first time I heard the nick "Metal Mozart" I thought 'Why Mozart?' Why does it always have to be Mozart?..yes, Mozart was a very prolific composer, but if you want to compare Tuomas' musical METAL genius to a classical composer, you could go with so many others that actually could resemble what we all today know as symphonic metal...And you're right, David, I hadn't thought about Wagner, but he's definitely closer to what Tuomas does...I had also thought about some others..like Liszt, or Berlioz..or Bach..or Vivaldi..or Sibelius...
Rick Wakeman made a documentary where he actually described Antonio Vivaldi as arguably the original metal composer..It's an interesting documentary...Now, if it were for me to choose, to compare Tuomas with, I'd go with Jean Sibelius, with whom I feel more inclined to make the match because, after all, he's another fellow Finnish genius and..his inspiration probably developed around the same environment as Tuomas'...Wagner is alright.. 🙂..But my pick is Sibelius...In fact, that day I read the expression 'Metal Mozart' in a comment of one of these Nightwish videos, my first reaction was..'Why Mozart?..i would rather call him the Metal Sibelius'..Sounds more appropriate..🤘😎 ...just saying..
Good point about the Metal Mozart. Granted, MM sounds good but he was quite "lighthearted" for me as a composer. Wagner, for me on the other hand, is a "heavy composer".
Once again a very enjoyable reaction David. Keep up the good work.
This intro is a very nice example of why I miss Jukka. With his way of playing and his sound he contributed so enormously to the storytelling, something I sometimes miss a bit with Kai. Don't misunderstand, I respect Kai for his precision, for his skills and I would never say anything bad about him. He is a machine. But my eyes and ears keep telling me that with Jukka an important part is gone.
R.I.P. Ann. 🙏🏻

Nightwish is amazing band...Floor is the.Queen
That was fun to watch. One of my favourite details performance wise is they way that Floor turns her hands up then seems to set the pyros off with a little movement of her wrists, happens at 24:20 in this video.
1. Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013)
2. Ever Dream (Wacken 2013)
3. Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere 2015)
4. Song of Myself (Wacken 2013)
5. Romanticide (Wacken 2013)
'6. Beethoven's Ninth (Vienna 1823)
Hey DH, feeeelin you...very nice reaction. I knew you'd get the time signature straight up and yes, it's Jukka that catches my eye at the start, and I was sure you would comment on it.
The Wagner comparison is first time I've heard it said but makes sense. My classical knowledge is relatively limited, but it makes sense to me that Tuomas would be most similar to a Romantic era composer of big melodic sound, compared to smaller classical sound or C.20th dissonance.
Thanx HG. Love this one. RIP, Mother Ann. Sometimes the sky is piano black.... 🌹🌹🌹 PS: Isn't a 9.4 better than a stand-up double? 😂
First. This song is for You Ann (mother of Nightwish Army) R.I.P 🤘😔🤘
Your flame and passion lives on in Us 🤘🔥🤘.
Ann Waychoff was known by many as the Nightwish Mom. She would give comments to people who reacted to Nightwish videos to try and help the reactors understand and she would tirelessly exchange comments with people who wanted to know more. She also communicated privately with a large number of fans and reactors (we know now from the tributes.). ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=ann+waychoff will show how many knew her and how many liked her enough to spend hours making videos about her/dedicated to her.
For me this song has some serious Pantera vibes 🤘🔥🤘.
And second .
So , let's see here : Standing Jukka (Yes), One pyro misfire , Emppu let's the cord ring and drinks instead , Before serious headbanging , Floor backs down from microphone stand
These thing I noticed 🤔( I might missed few things...).
Great reaction , Thank You !!!!!
NWSU 🤘😎🤘.
I guess I must be on the same page with you, as you said! There were two key features of this performance, both very simple, that caught my attention on first listen way back in 2013. The first one was the one you called out, Jukka standing and gesturing to the crowd with his sticks. And I have always said the very same thing as you, "showmanship!" I love Jukka (and miss him) more than anything else because of his showmanship. It isn't doing "crazy shit" just to show off how great he is. No, it is very simple things like the body language he throws into his work. /// The second thing that caught my attention and respect was the very ending: the four reprised lines from the Part 1 chorus; broken by silent pauses; the silence, in turn, broken by the precision-timed pyro burst; three times in a row. And then the last fools you by delaying the pyro burst with a perfect pregnant pause that makes you go, "Wait! What? ... OH, awesome!" /// On the Metal Mozart thing: True, the MM alliteration is a fun thing, but I would think the real reason is because the majority of a broadly distributed fanbase are not going to be well-versed experts in classical music. Though I think I agree with you about hearing more of a Wagner style (and I don't hear Mozart at all) I'll wager most people have zero familiarity with Wagner's music and probably have never even heard his name. But everyone has heard of Mozart. So I think it is more likely the term was created not to compare his style to any particular composer's style but rather to compare his style to the great classical composers in general by using a name everyone will recognize. The alliteration is just icing on the cake for making the term stick! :) Great reactions as always! Love your coverage and depth and commentary!
Marco: OOOOOOO... Floor: show de way. 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks David..you didn't miss a thing, I expect nothing less.
Jukka's drumming style was a whole of body experience! He's a hard hitter, and really raises his arms to pound...takes so much energy! So fun to watch Jukka!
I hear some periphery Wagner...but also Bach, Mozart(presentation), Strauss, Zimmerman. Included w their Endless Forms Most Beautiful cd is an all.orchesral version of the album. I think you should reserve heavy Wagner til you hear this.
Why use Marko's vocal to start a phrase? IT'S MARKO...hearing him open singing is a treat! I highly recommend Tides, by Tarot, Marko's early solo band. The vocal will haunt you its so clean!
And he absolutely lunges like in stance...and barefoot! See live Kivia, from his newest project Pyre of the Black Heart...which is great in Finnish and English!
And as you'll read...I pay my respects to Ann W!
I have some kind of adiction to reactions, especially nightwish.
After seeing hundreds of reactions, I have to say that yours feel truthly natural, with the right amount of technic opinión to an indocumentated like me, nice sense of humor.
Keep feeding the pigs, I realy enjoy It.
I always thought Tchaikovsky. But that's a personal opinion. Heh...wrote that before the end of the video. For this, this is a song that kinda grabs me. It pulls you along. I like the dark feel, the gothicness of it. And there are other parts on the album.....it is longer than they play live. But the lyrics are very much in the vein of Whitman, as the title suggests. Great song, great reaction!
Great reaction, fair Score
I think that Thomas Is the Mozart, and christofer Johnson (Therion)
From the point of View of the heavy sound of the music created by both composers (Wagner - johnson)
But both classical composers are genious, as the symphonic metal composers Tuomas-Johnson
Lying in the hospital and commented on floors newest video of an old revamp song at a recent live performance just now and she answered me. I am dead now, In the best way possible.
Love your reviews, as always.
If I've understood correctly, Tuomas composes these songs but he doesn't do sheet music so there's no 8/4 nor 4/4 anywhere in the original designs. Pip Williams puts the notes on sheet music for the orchestra and tweaks the things to allow the orchestra to actually play it because sometimes Tuomas composes things with virtual instruments that the real orchestra cannot play.
One of my favorites. A home run for me. ⚾️
Yep. Jukka. 😁 been waiting for someone to notice.
From 7/4 to 4/4 and from 4/4 to 8/4 and back to..........................for Floor he gave a 9,4!!!!!! Yeahhh!!!!
Great reaction. I also love this song. And I guess Wagner is the way to go for epicness...
Wow, isn't it my favorite Nightwish song... I am expecting a lot from you David... "Here wee go" ;)
For Ann, R.I.P dear.
Recommend also listen album version of this song it is few minute longer(Singer was Anette). End is very poetic/poem and partly dedicated to band members family/closest friends. They also get "voice" in the end. Song is inspired Walt Whitman same name poem. Thomas says "wanted to pay homage to him and do the lyrics in a way that he would possibly write. It's a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis - especially the spoken-word part."
good intro for a epic music that this is gonna be
I feel so special and intelligent that I’m on the same page as you, noticing Jukka and all. What an honor to be in your level.
That‘s the first time I ever heard someone compare the different styles of classic composers. I think Mozart is just more known than Wagner. Let‘s just call him the Wacken Wagner instead? Makes it easier to catch. 😁
Hey, Big D!!!! Feelin' YOU!!!
Great score. I agree. One of my faves. Wagner, eh? I'd like to see NW perform the Ring Cycle. Marco as Odin. Tuomas as Siegfried. And, of course, Floor as Brunhilde. 😁
We all miss Jukka's showmanship. That's how we think of them. Kai the technician, Jukka the showman.
Another fine react, brother. Mission accomplished. I was entertained.
HARRUMPH!!! 🤘😎🤘
Emppu as Loge
@@PracticallyFixed 👍 There you go.
Fun fact, this song came on directly after Ghost Love Score
What band turns a breakdown into a whole new verse structure? Nobody. It’s like 2 different songs in one 😎😎
PS - I also count 8/4 coming out of the chorus. If you listen closely you can also hear Jukka playing 4/4 through the 7/4 and the downbeat changes.
I think metal Mozart is used because of the alliteration and that Mozart is recognized by so many people as a classic composer even if they aren't into classical music. I agree his style is more like Wagner.
Been waiting for this one. Nice! ... and now I can finally finish watching your full Wacken 2013 viewing with Just Jen. I stopped watching it part way through as soon as you mentioned you had already watched Song of Myself and had a reaction coming for it.
was waiting for this one :)))) great rant as always
Agreed with the feel and Wagner!
Jukka the drummer Standing and playing!!!!
I believe this song was written when Annette was the lead vocalist and she is pretty good but doesn’t have the vocal chops that Marko does. At this point in 2013 Floor was still a “fill in” vocalist and wasn’t a full band member yet. So Marko would be the one to hit a lot of the high power vocals.
Wait.....They left out the ending. On the album, here's a "poem" at the end with some beautiful orchestrals. Love that part. Take a listen if you get a chance.
Dude, ya were second guessing their structuring throughout the entirety of the song my man... LoL. Sometimes man, one must simply sit back & listen... and just simply surrender to the performer's guidance, wholly accepting all of the transporting emotional journey whilst & experience sonically every miniscule euphoric aspect of their enhanced chemistry elevating the piece of work unto a level wherein the overall well gelled collaborative performance becomes an utter masterpiece... Which is precisely what is being proffered by these amazing artists in this instance, specifically; & whom, after all, would be the ones most likely to know what it is that they are actually going for with how they have worked at carefully constructing, & practiced perfecting, the whole of the piece in question.
Hey, I get it man, sometimes a person simply doesn't happen to be in the right frame of mind to be entirety open & receptive to a given piece of music... It is just what being a human & experiencing all of life through the various emotional lenses all human beings feel at wildly differing moments throughout their existences... randomly altered by happenstance & the luck of chance timing.
Yet I would advocate for your deciding to give this song a few more listens that are experienced non-stop totally uninterrupted or over thought.... you likely shall come to appreciate this one far more than you already do I feel... c'mon man, what da ya have to lose in doing so?
My favorite song..
