In his book K.K. Downing denies it, but it's clear that 'Painkiller' was a statement of intent from the band in the face of the emergence of thrash bands becoming very popular.
Priest were like: "You kids think that's metal? Well, get a load of THIS..." And they took everyone back to school with this record.
'Touch of Evil' is a stunning dark ballad from this album.

Dude I have been waiting a year and a half for you to do this one! Now you know why I kept hammering you for it! LoL The drummer is Scott Travis, an American, who has been in the band ever since this album. He is by far the best drummer JP has ever had. And no, this song is not their only good song after Ram It Down. The whole album is great and their material they have put out since has been very good. Even some of the material with Ripper Owens on vocals was better than Turbo and Ram It Down. I did request you do a few more JP songs recently so I'm looking forward to those at some point. Glad my request turned into an almost hour long reaction video! 🤘🏼

This is the metal National Anthem. The reason why nothing else by them is requested is simple. Painkiller exists. Why request anything else when you can ask for Painkiller? It’s a tour de force. It sticks in your head and it’s brutal. And guess who just did a cover for a fan only release, and covered it note perfectly. Lovebites. Haruna kills it. M&M destroy it, and Asami puts in a fantastic performance of let’s face it, a taxing vocal line. You can find it on UA-cam. A very fitting tribute to a musical milestone.

I think this song is just basically relentless. It’s a freight train. And it seems like a lot of bands go thru that: straying far from their roots, until it goes a bit too wide, and they end up reverting. Whether it’s experimentation, growth or, hell, selling out. Still, when a band goes this hard, hey, you gotta acknowledge it. Side note: I found myself wondering about all the reactions that scored in the 9 range. That would be some kinda list.

Rob Halford definitely bumped up his game several notches on this song (and the rest of the album). This is his shining moment in Priest history, imo and he totally redeemed himself (not that he was ever a weak singer!). He wasn't like this on the two previous albums! I'm convinced that Rob is super-human. And believe it or not he pulls this song off in concert like you wouldn't believe!!! The rest of the band also worked really hard on the "Painkiller" album - every song is a killer!!! I saw Rob's band in a small Allentown PA bar in 2010 and it was absolutely incredible!!! He can do things with his voice that no other singer can do!!! Another thing: his lyrics are ALWAYS fascinating to listen to and they contribute to the feeling in each song! Rob's heart is truly devoted to metal!!!

Hey there David, I just came across your channel today via a few other reaction videos pertaining to Priest's Invincible Shield.
This reaction to Painkiller got me squarely in the feels because I get what you mean about the stark comparison between this and the aesthetics of Turbo and Ram It Down.
As a Priest fan, I can admit to their storied history and chequered output, and perhaps that even reinforces my appreciation in an eccentric kind of way.
The verisimilitude of their sound allows for these nourishing points of comparative discussion to even exist. Akin to comparing the silly funk of Queen's Hot Space to the dark majesty of Innuendo, Turbo feels rubbery and facetious when compared to something with the malevolent energy of Painkiller.
In terms of Rob's vocals on Turbo, they are pedestrian by his standards. Ram It Down not so much, though the lyrics of both outings generally fall far short of prior efforts.
It's dismaying because I think the ability to sing with more control, elasticity, and consistency than perhaps ever before was finally being afforded to him due to his newfound sobriety. The live singing in the Fuel For Life tour exemplifies this, and you can almost feel how uninterrupted his voice is as he meanders around the scale. Negotiating his passagio with unprecedented dexterity. He even oversung sometimes! 😵‍💫
The abberations that peppered his still superlative singing were near enough gone. Like so many distorted gargles, dry and crispy croaks, and splintering Janis Joplin - like harmonics when his high mix singing became laboured (Devil's Child '82 Vengeance springs to mind), and how it very slightly started to sound like he was just happy to get there.
He was nearly always able to incorporate these wanton elements in service to the song, and to accent what his voice was at its crux. Yet in the fledgling sober years of Turbo, so much of that was shed like detritus, and what emerged was a sinewy, virile, and clarion instrument.
A cleaner instrument, with less stymied power for songs that Rob could sing in his sleep? I can see why you were frustrated with their direction in the mid to late 80s in this regard.
Ironically, I appreciate the synthesised aspects of Blood Red Skies on Ram, if mainly for helping the emotivity of the lyrical content really hit home. I once read a comment that Blood Red Skies was like a Frank Frazetta painting brought into sonic form, and I think that's true. Rob's voice is truly in technicolour on that recording.
....Johnny B. Goode ..... on the same album....!? 😳😳😳 Words fail me.
Painkiller as an album is just beautiful. The songs are all each their own entity, and yet the whole kaboodle smacks with such cohesion.
Regarding the title track in particular, it has been both a highlight and a vocal spanner in the works for Rob. He outdid himself by a huge order of magnitude in the studio, but he has very rarely sung Painkiller live that is proximal to the recording.
Though I totally agree with you. When you see a band live (I'm seeing Priest for the first time in London this month!), you should expect artistic decisions, practical alterations, and human variations... even from Metal Gods! I can't wait.

I am a couple of years less older than you, I have grown up listening to heavy metal, but somehow I too missed the best songs of Judas Priest. So, when you admit it with a straight face without faking any bee es I am there with you.
    Keep it up.

    THANK YOU!
It's been AGES since I've listened to them. Not because of the previous albums. Just new music comes in and the older stuff kinda gets forgotten for awhile.
But...Because of your reaction. I had to go check out the album again.
    The entire Album is AMAZING.
It's just that Painkiller is the most loved song.
    They 100% turned it around.
I get to rediscover my love of Judist Priest.
I loved them as a kid. Older metal head cousins.

The drummer is Scott Travis, who came from Paul Gilbert's band Racer X. Seems he brought that Racer X shredding style to Priest instantly, lol. Kinda ironic, since Racer X is heavily Priest influenced. I recommend checking out Racer X if you love this style. They never really had the money for this level of production, but the playing is off the charts.

Hard to believe Priest created this masterpiece so late in their creative career
The only reason this song is not in my personal top ten all-time songs is because I had to add Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower (10) because it is my favorite solo of all-time.

The rest of the album has the same attitude and heaviness. The beauty is every song is incredibly unique and distinguished from each other. This is their best album and you are in a unique position to have the rest of the songs in this album all ahead of you. This album is up there with the greatest metal albums yo include all the big 4s. this album is just as heavy and badass as any of metalicas or megadeths in their primes. dead serious. best songs off painkiller IMO is "Leather Rebel", "Metal Meltdown", "Nightcrawler" and One Shot at Glory. Also, their most recent album in 2018 Firepower will surprise you.

Thx so much, salute from France Bro...

I will definitely check out Stained Glass so ty for calling that out DH! Definitely one of my favorites by them since more thrashy. Interesting back story of how JP changed for you. You know Lovebites covers this and Midori & Miyako absolutely slay it (shocker). M&M might even play it faster than Tipton / Downing, shocker right. It's a fan-made video but definitely worth checking out (offline). Haruna's drums are insane. Why I love Lovebites, they bring back 80s metal sound with their unique touch to it. 9.2 is respectable...DV similarity, undisputed villain, lol. Great react! 🤘🐺

Saw them in Tucson a couple weeks ago. Rob still has the voice at 71 yrs old. This was the first album with new drummer Scott Travis. He's still in the band. Excellent album that came out in 1990. 50th anniversary tour. Unfortunately Kk and Glenn no longer in band. Glenn due to health problems. I was somewhat of a priest fan before painkiller came out but when I heard painkiller I couldn't stop listening to it 🔥.

Great reaction, one of my favorites. Yes, do react to newer Priest. I'm thinking the newer album you'll here some people say some crap about is their 2008 release of "Nostradamus". It's a 23 track concept album about the name sake. I myself thinks it's a great album has a symphonic feel, but great. In his book, Rob states that it's a great work, credits the album with having his best lyric work to date, and believes it will become a significant metal work. Since it's release I have noticed people are coming around about it, but I'm sure you're going to hear opinions about that with all the comments you'll be getting about Priest

Post-Painkiller era : Bear in mind the next 2 albums after Painkiller - Jugulator and Demolition - Rob left and Tim "Ripper" Owens took over on vocals - but he actually does a very good job. So, remember those songs are NOT fronted by Halford.
However, Halford returns for the albums Angel Of Retribution, Nostradamus (a double-disc concept album), Redeemer Of Souls, Firepower, and the latest one, whose title escapes me now. If it helps your anxiety/curiosity, those album titles include the words "Retribution" and "Redeemer" - hopefully they live up to them, eh? Haha.
