- In this video Tony shows you how to properly do the 25 hour break in service on a Polaris Ranger 1000XP. He shows you how to change the engine oil and filter, the front differential fluid, and the transmission fluid. He also instructs you on how to service your air intake filter. Lastly, he covers how to reset your service clock on the gauge cluster.
Just to clarify. The owners manual does not say to replace the front differential fluid or transmission fluid at 25 hours. It says to inspect/check the fluid level. However, we strongly suggest changing the fluids after the first 25 hours. You will typically see a higher amount of particulates during your first fluid change. We think it is best to get those particulates out of the front differential and transmission sooner rather than later.
The Polaris Hilliard style front differentials do not hold a lot of fluid (approximately 8.5 fluid oz.) The armature plates in the differential constantly wear on the housing internally when in AWD. Because of that wear and the low fluid volume, the fluid is filled with particulates very quickly. The metal particulates in the fluid can lower the effectiveness of the magnet so your AWD is sporadic. We suggest changing the front differential fluid at least twice as often as the manual says, every 50 hours/500 miles compared to 100 hours/1,000 miles.

Awesome video! Exactly what I need to know for my first service. To many times dealers don't do the job correctly. On day one had many issues with my local dealer. I understand every dealer is different but my experience is I wouldn't trust them with a oil change!
The service chart for my 2021 1000 says to change engine oil and filter at 25 hours, and check the front gear case and transmission levels not change them. Should I?
We recommend changing them and explain why in the video description.

just found this video. GREAT explanation/walk thru. Does polaris still sell the kit that has all of the fluids and supplies you need for this service and is it the same as the one for older models? Have a 2023 Ranger crew premium that is about due for this service
Yes, Polaris still sells the oil change kits. You can get them from your dealer, Amazon, and various online retailers.

Tubing goes by ID. I don't know if I still have the one in this video. I typically have some 3/16 or 1/4" clear tubing laying around. You can find it at places like Home Depot and Lowe's.
You left the rags under the oil filter. Otherwise great video
Just did this service at about 30 hours. The front diff fluid was very very dark. I think I will be changing it way more frequently considering it's.suchna small amount of fluid. Great vid thanks a lot!!

That's not an XP 1000 it's a 1000 premium is there a difference in the service?
Correct. This machine is a 1000 and not a XP1000. We have it titled that way because the service procedure is the same for both machines. So by having it say XP 1000 we capture both viewers searching for 1000 and XP 1000.

My 2020 XP 1000 says it takes 6.8 Fl oz in the front gear case. Also my transmission says it takes 41oz not 44… Maybe there is a diff in the standard and xp?
I just checked a 19 service manual I have and it stated 8.5 for the front differential. The trans says 44 except the international model shows 40.5. The international model has the turf mode which takes up some of the space in the trans. I wouldn't get too hung up on separating out the exact amounts. Instead, fill each to the fill hole threads (which is stated in the manuals.). I would have to check online parts numbers to see if the non XP has the older smaller front diff like the old 900 XP. If so, that would explain a difference in capacity.

I'm considering buying one and 25 hours doesn't seem like a very long time between servicing... Looks like it will run into a fair amount of money?
It's not bad. The 25 hours is just the break in service which is pretty common with UTV's and SXS's. After that it's typically every 50 hours for the fluids. We recommend changing the front differential fluid in the Polaris machines more often than the manual calls for because it seems to help Hilliard differential function better. Partly because the capacity is so small, but that also means that just a quart of fluid lasts a long time.

I'm sure you did it, but you didn't mention it; check the dipstick after adding oil.
It's definitely good practice to check your oil dipstick after a fluid change as well as on a regular basis between servicing.

Do the braking and transmission fluids really need to be changed? I though it was just the engine oil.

The service manual for my 2022 Northstar crew states the transmission should get 51 oz of AGL...Online it says 41 oz and this video states 44. Any idea why there are so many discrepancies? I followed my service manual, now I'm concerned I overfilled too much. Thank you for this quality video! I really appreciate the torque specs!
There could be differences in the housing and small changes with the gears changing the capacity. As long as you filled it up the the fill plug opening so it just started to drain out you will be just fine.

Yes, it is typically good practice to prefill the oil filter. That ensures that if the engine has not been started fairly recently that it is without oil the minimal amount of time. If you don't prefill the filter, that is just that much longer that the engine internals are not lubricated properly. There is debate on whether you should fill the center (filter exit) or only fill through the outer holes and let the oil seep through the filter media. Filling the center means that the oil would not completely be filtered. However some oil is better than no oil. Also, some oil is not filtered when cold either as it bypasses the filter media via the bypass valve.
Ok when I bought my 2023 ranger the dealership told me there was no need to change diff fluids until 100 hr and the only thing I needed to change was engine oil so what do u think?

What kind of lift are you using. I like that you can elevate the machine and also get the tires from the lift also separately. Kinda looks like a double lift..
It's a generic 4 post drive on lift. It normally comes with one jack that slides front to rear, but I added a second one to it.
When lining the neoprene bushings what kind of grease do you use?
For myself it's usually just what I happen to have in my grease gun at the time, usually red n tacky.
I find it absolutely crazy that it is required to change your oil every 25 hours. That’s what two dollars an hour cost for only oil and filter. Somebody is screwing somebody😜
The 25 hours is only the break in, or first oil change for the engine. After that it is every 50 hours or 6 months.

Where are all the grease points at? I see you didn’t do that but I believe it should be done every 25 hours
The service manual calls for every 50 hours, 500 miles, before long storage, or after lots of use in water. Regular grease points are at the slip yoke between the prop shafts, and the bushings of the front and rear sway bars if applicable. Some machines may have grease points at the suspension bushings.
The only fluid change at 25 is the engine oil? The others are inspect only?

What happens if it calls for 5w50 and I run 10w30
We wouldn't advise running oil outside of the specs the manual calls for. A 10w30 oil is thicker and has less of a range for temperature change. So it would be thicker in the winter/colder months, and then it would thin out and start to break down faster in the hotter temps. This would increase the wear on the engine during colder temps and engine starting. With the oil breaking down faster you would need to change your oil more often. Now if you needed oil on the side of the trail, some oil is better than no oil.

I personally don't use the Polaris stuff for the most part so I don't have a regular place to get it. I think Tony got the fluids and filters for this video from the owner who got them from his local dealer. I would suggest joining a Facebook group and then supporting one of their vendors. There are plenty of groups out there.

that depends on several factors. If you are doing the service yourself and do the minimum according to the manual, it's only the cost of the filter and the couple quarts of oil. Also, depends if you have any issues that you notice during the lookover. If you do the service like we suggest you also have the cost of the front diff and trans fluids. If your filter is damaged or needing replaced then there's that cost. If you aren't doing the service yourself then there's the labor cost which varies greatly by shop and where you are in the country. It should only be 1-2 hours of labor depending on how much you are wanting looked at and if any issues are found.
