  • When the Basque separatist group, ETA, murdered a young local politician early in 1997 millions of Spaniards protested. Yet Spain's national outcry against ETA seems to have done little to quash its bloody thirty year drive for independence.

In San Sebastian, 13,000 ETA supporters march unopposed through the streets. Igor Mota led a pro-ETA March Of Liberty all over the Basque country and is contemptuous of Basque people who denounced the ETA killing of Miguel Blanco. "We have experienced threats from the Basque police, that they are going to kill us" he says. Local support for ETA was hit by the killing explains journalist Humbero Unzueta, yet the long suppression of Basque culture means even moderates still crave independence. Archive footage of the bombing of the capital Guernica by Franco in 1937 and survivor Pablo Izaguirre, paint a graphic picture of the devastation. In a social club for ETA's political wing, a sign proclaims "Kill The Police". Basque children sing ancient folk songs in the hills above Guernica. The miseries of dictatorship are gone but the Basque land is still destined not to know peace.

The song the marchers sing at 1:45 is "Eusko Gudariak", or "Basque Warriors", which was the anthem of the Basque Country during the Spanish Civil War.

People must be allowed to decide how they want to be ruled, so why is Spain afraid of giving them what they want? It is their own dream.

The Spanish Constitution does not allow for it. You would have to change the Constitution to allow for it which is no easy task

@Sayan Dutta it lost support from the population as violent actions were being much less supported as now the population had more autonomy

Because other regions like Catalunia, the Jura or even Bavaria could follow all over Europe.
We would have a patchwork like before WW1, which didn’t end well for anyone!
Besides, the E. T. A. are marxist communists, which didn’t end well either.
A social capitalism might not be perfect, but it gave us peace, food and freedom our ancestors could only dream about.
      Good enough for me.

I´m daughter of a political exiled because of Basque independentism. Terrorists wanted money so they threatened my family, this is what they called "impuesto revolucionario" (revolutionary tax). My family had to sell their home and leave Basque Country in secret just because if you don´t pay you will die because of a bomb in your car or a gun shot in the street.
It is suposed that ETA have been disolved today but this is because they had gained the streets. Disidents were/are bullied in many ways, many has left the country and many other just hide their true feelings and remain silent and scared. Independentist teach their propaganda in schools so after 35 years of that they had legions of blind loyal followers.
1997, after Miguel Angel Blanco murder, was a moment of hope. When many of this non independentist feel strong and free to point independentist as accomplices of a criminal movement. But this moment past, nothing can be done when young generations were teached in hate and lies.
Independentist has manipulated Basque history and corrupted their culture. They are a shame. They are worst than fascists.

      Bienvenida, hermana.
      Viva Euskadi! Gora Espainia!

Spain will not compromise their integrity or borders by granting the basque people a separete nation.
It did not happen in 500 years or in the future.

Jon Muniain Most of the vasques are not independentist. In Madrid is almost impossible to see a independentist vasque. The vasquds in Madrid usually have scaped from ETA and for that as they were minaced they are not independentist.

Jon Muniain You could, but the vasques in Madrid tend to be spanish patriots, the feel very spaniards, it is very rare see a independentist vasque in Madrid. There is freedoom, you could, but it is very unusual on the Madrid Vasque community.

The Basks from Spain, are descendents of the Huns, when Attila invaded Europe, he reach the north of spain, some of his hordes remained in that area, this ppl are basically hungarians descendents and this guys have no mother land, they came from mongolia, if you look at their migdaled eyes, you will recognize them easly.

Basques have nothing to do with huns. And also; Attila was turkic, not mongol. At that time there wasn't such a thing ''Mongol''. Huns were turkic federation of different turkic tribes.

When Humberto Undueta said that during Franco dictatorship Basque culture were baned is FALSE. My grandparent whas "txistulari" (player of a typical basque instrument) during franquism. He recorded discs, traveled through all Spain playing traditional basque music and dances in typical basque dress as a member of "Coros y Danzas" (chorus and dance) a national organization to preserve and promote folklore from all Spain. This is how he meet my grandmother!!!!!
Of course is true that Franco was represive, he was a dictator! But after him, in democracy, "euskera" (basque language) was recognice as co-oficial language in Spain along other idioms like "Galego" (galician) or "catalan" (catalonian) and is teached in schools, in fact they are highly autonomous (spanish autonomic system is the more open and permisive from EU. Scotland has said they are jealous of that!!!!)
