  • Preserved Locomotives of the Caledonian Railway
    We take a look at two Caledonian Railway locomotives:
    812 Class No. 828, built at St Rollox in 1899 - Based at the Strathspey Railway is seen at Bo'ness and Llangollen
    439 Class No. 419, built at St Rollox in 1907 - Based at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway is seen at Bo'ness, East Lancs, North Norfolk, Gloucestershire Warwickshire and Churnet Valley Railway
    Also featured at Bo'ness are the Scottish Railway Preservation Society's (SRPS) two operational Caledonian carriages; Brake Corridor Composite 464 and a Third Corridor Compartment 1375.
    While not featured here, a third Caledonian Railway locomotive survives at the Glasgow Transport Museum in the form of Caledonian Single No. 123.

    Seeing that four-wheel drive tank engine pull six coaches always reminds me that steam traction was no joke.

    At the Busch gardens Williamsburg theme park in Virginia, USA, there is a loose replica of a CR Dunalastair 2, with dark Blue CR Livery, along with the engine being named Balmoral Castle.

    There is a Scottish 4-4-0 preserved in Belgium at the Brussels Train World museum.

    What a shame that so few Caledonian locomotives have been preserved... I'd love to see a 492 or 944 running today

      Well Tom don’t have to have shame because we might see New Caledonian Railway engine’s come in the future as British Railways are planning to revive steam

      It's really too bad that none of the Dunalastair 4-4-0s survived. Those were nice locomotives. Although the one I wish was still around would be one of C.R.'s 600-class 0-8-0 freight locos. I have a soft spot for 0-8-0s and the 600s in particular were... unusual. Look for a picture of one and you'll see what I mean.

      828 is currently under overhaul (fast track, boiler recently steamed). Bo'ness (home of 419) hasn't reopened yet... in fact they have been hit by landslips... donate to their appeal here: www.bkrailway.co.uk/emergency-landslide-appeal/

    One of those two engines the one that is blue without tender looks a bit like Thomas🤔😅.

      You are been confused thomas its not a Scottish engine it's a British engine and his base it's a LBSCR e2 class
      And the caledonian railway 812 it's the same base of Donald and Douglas
