I'm Hayden Hillier-Smith. On this channel I will break down what makes good editing...pulling back the curtain on how editors make the choices to keep YOU, THE AUDIENCE, engaged. This includes showcasing the creative choices I have made. I hope you can learn something new and inspire you to edit.
00:00 Intro
00:36 Movie - Розваги
huge props to your girlfriend for writing this and you for editing and the acting was great, I could feel a sense of happiness for the extrovert at the end and that is a hallmark of a good story. You have to make the audience care and you nailed it. hats off to you.
Well done.
I have a feeling this would perform way better on Netflix than UA-cam. It just highlights you and your girlfriend’s incredible range and talent on these platforms.
Also, Amanda McCants outside of this piece is fucking hilarious, and a great choice for the Sasha character.
Well done, this was insanely well done on so many levels.
I demand that this was “only” the pilot to my next favorite show. Soooo…when can we expect the next episode??? 😂 LOVE IT!!!!!!
Better than most big studio productions. Script, story, actors, all of it. Never would have seen it if you hadn't posted the trailer editing video. Smart! Also, as someone with a short attentions span, a short film is a great thing!
Sooo good! Edit is oc amazing and characters are very well written for just 25 min of footage!
Well done y’all 🚀
You can see there's so much effort put into this! So glad I watched it, really enjoyed it!
Bro. Watched this on TV. I hope nothing comes off as pretentious or hating or anything because I loved this!
Things I loved:
- Beautiful shots and colors throughout (However, there was a problem that I'll address later)
- Engaging story + characters
- I went into this thinking, "this might give me 2-3 good laughs" but I had at least 10.
- 10:36 The gothic girl's delivery of the line, her smirk, and the music took me out. I had to pause to stop laughing, it was such an ominous line that sounded like something the CDC would say but sounds so strange when she says it like that LMAO
- Wonderful Score. A lot of comedy music on stock music platforms sounds cheesy or too over-the-top goofy, but this was just perfect. Which genre of music would this music be classified as?
- Camera movement and rack focus
- The acting was well done by everyone. Amanda genuinely felt like a stubborn person. The red headed fella made me laugh the most. However, I only realized at the end how underrated Ashley's performance was. Just hearing her speak with widened eyes throughout the film gave me real life anxiety. By that I mean, I often found myself wanting to say "ayooo calm down!" out loud during the film as if I was actually talking to her. Her ability to make small issues seem more intense than they are was well done.
- Not sure if intentional, but I loved the contrast between the black guy's POV being filmed on a nice, stable tripod. While bucket hat's POV is filmed handheld and shaky. Their camera angles match their individual emotions, which was cool
- The final shot of the film with her smile was lovely visually storytelling
- The editing was nice because it had many stylistic moments, but maintained realism
- The way that the dialogue is edited between two people talking. They cut each other off sometimes, like a real conversation, and I like that you don't always cut to the person who is going to talk BEFORE they talk. J cutting the audio in made it feel more dynamic and less like script lines being read. Some feature films aren't good at this, so respect.
- Airrack cameo was cool. Even though I would've been fine with him being a character, it was oddly nice to have him remain a background character. Can't figure out why. I guess because it's sometimes cooler for a film to say "we could do this, but we won't" vs. actually doing it.
Things I didn't like:
- That the film ended. I'm not just being funny, I could've easily watched an extra hour.
- The stock footage at the start of the film made me roll my eyes. Whenever I see stock footage in a non-meme context, it breaks immersion for me. I believe that the opening shots of a feature/short film should focus on making the audience believe that this environment and story "is real." Stock footage is real, but it is often "too real" to the point that it has this fakeness to it that is really uncanny. The ideal opening scene in my mind would be the one clip that revealed their house with the fireworks behind it. It could've had a "Happy New Year's 2020" sign (comped in with motion tracking if needed) and then the camera would linger on the shot for a bit so the audience pays attention to the sign + a quick montage of the real characters dancing + detail shots of popping bottles, etc. Although it feels like you guys rented an AirBNB to film this, so perhaps you wanted to avoid a mess and avoid getting in trouble for violating their "no partying" rule. Now to completely contradict everything I've just said, I almost feel like the stock footage at the beginning BENEFITED my viewing experience of the rest of the movie. Because it immediately dropped my expectations for the film, and I said out loud "aw man, this is gonna suck." So when it actually turned out to be funny, it hit way harder for me because it was unexpected. Weirdly enough, the rest of the stock footage for the remainder of the film "worked" for me and made sense in the contexts it was used, for some reason.
- "The student film look" that this short film had. And I can't figure out why. Even though the shots looked great and had great composition and colors, things like the party felt "stiff" and like a set. It seemed too perfect, specifically on the wide shots. Now obviously feature films have more budget available, but I remember the opening scene during "Talk To Me" feeling like a house that somebody would actually live in and not the set of a commercial. The shot at 13:34 felt like it was a rented AirBNB that you guys had just walked into. I guess the one pass I could give for this is that "it's quarantine so there's nothing else to do but clean" but I had the exact same feeling before the quarantine scenes even started.
- 6:35 It sort of broke my immersion when there was a jump cut of the girl getting up. I imagine it's because her actual time to get up was too slow, but it seemed like it could've been hidden better with a "flow/morph cut transition" or simply changing angles like you did a second later. But what do I know, you probably tried everything and it simply didn't work
- The footsteps at 13:35 broke my immersion. It felt like a sound effect vs. real life. She's barefoot but it sounds like she's wearing a shoe. Feet make a "shmack and stick" sound IRL
"CRITICS ARE SAYING, AT LEAST 10 LAUGHS!"
I enjoyed this. Liked the characters, dialogue and pacing. This could easily be a tv series.
Did you think we wouldnt notice the cut at , sounds like the best quarantine idea so far?
I really enjoyed watching this one, cannot wait for the next one
I have been waiting to watch this on a TV, it was definitely worth the wait!
Why was this lowkey pretty good
Waited a while to watch this on the TV, definitely worth it. Went by fast, lots of great acting and cinematography!
(Also I like how the YT title is written, reminds me of something you said in the editing course)
wow this was sick! I was wondering how it was all gonna come together at the end and it just did! great work bro, also i freaking knew it was you on the zoom date haha!
That was awesome! Made my night watching this. Very cool. Wish there was more. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, Stay safe, have fun! 🎄👍😊♥🤗
So good!
Not usually the sort of film I'd sit down to watch, but I loved it. Was sweet to watch how the trailer for this would come together, and how it's done. Your advice here and on the editing podcast have really helped us up our game on our main channel!
Really nice to see it come together!
WOW I love this!!!
Ashley did an incredible job writing this and all the actors were amazing!! your editing really brought it together and i'm glad we get to see this for free haha:))
Completely agree.
Y’all put so much effort into this film. Proud of you guys! Congrats!
This looks really good
I noticed that in every frame there is the color blue, amazing that brings the movie together
This was great fun to watch!
You have come a long way Hillier, Hollywood needs to watch out
This is really good! wow
That was simply awesome work ❤
loved it!
Great film! Props to everybody who worked on it. Just a few nit-picks i had about the characters:
- Paul wasn't introvert. Great character, funny, charismatic, but i didn't feel like he was an introvert.
- Sasha was mostly perfect. Her "evolution" from not wanting friends to being ok with the idea, was really natural, except for the whole "f buddy" thing. I think it came a bit to early in the story. If the scene was saved as like a post-credits joke i think it would've been better.
- Ashley was great as Blake, so congrats to her for her acting and writing.
anyone else notice airrack in the background?

Was waiting for this since the trailer vid! Amazing work prod team!
This was really good…why did it take her so long to scramble 1 🥚 egg? 😂
This is great. Keep it up,
Awesome mini film. Thank you for sharing 😁
Great movie . loved it next time just want bit long movie from you
Why does this only have 7,5K views!??
enjoyed this❤️, I exhaled loudly through my nostrils at the astronaut scene. Logan Paul’s 2020 music video was in the related videos, how did I never see this 🤯
Is that Airrack and Mac in the background?
Looks official , amazing thing you did guys
i don't know wh , but i love it
We need a part 2🙏
This was actually a really fun film. Good jokes and good acting. And the editing was invisible outside of a few cool cuts. Honestly, I would have been happy to watch a full length movie if this standard was maintained throughout the whole thing. You all killed it!!
Hello Hiller quick question i used ti post boring car videos and i completely changed to fun and car stuff should i put all those old videos in provate? Became people wont bindge watch it let me know pls
I usually don't comment in videos. BUT THIS WASS SOOOO GOOOD. Really good film overall. TELL UR GIRLFRND TO MAKE ANOTHER ONEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember seeing you break down a short version/ trailer of this a while back when I subscribed... Cool to see the full version and I know y'all did not disappoint👌
Ok the first line was a comment I made before watching all of the film. It sure was an understatement😅. The acting on this is on point, everyone embodied their character very well, the comedy is great and the editing is obviously one of the best(Shout out to hillier).
"I remember seeing you break down a short version/ trailer of this a while back when I subscribed..."

Ashley, Cast and Crew Bravo!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Great Storytelling! I thought all of the comedic elements were hilarious! I loved all of the interactions between the characters in the house. The build up between these interactions….Chef’s Kiss.👌🏽

That was great. I would’ve never found this if you didn’t share it. Appreciate the experience 😊
Would love to see a series of these characters
Very, very cool!! I kinda wish it was going to be a series, lol ❤🎉😊👍👍👍
So good! This is the first movie about 2020 that I have really liked. Great choices of music for every scene.
I wanted to watch more of it I really liked it. I’m more of an introvert so I kind of like 2020.
is she " ITS JUST ASHLEYY" GIRL???
So cool 👍
Thanks for all your hard work for us
🎉
the sound design is not the best. dialogues are slightly too long. acting delivery also need to end the dialogues better. sometimes camera is on one frame for too long. mostly the dialogue delivery and dialogue length plus sound design is what threw me off.
1:44 is that @airrack in the background or am i tripping
That was really nice!
I think u should do a series of it. its gooodd!
This shit is better than 90% of tv shows... please more?
Yay! Love it broo!
Been hyped for this
Was great, clearly a different pace from what we have usually haha. 😸
As a small possible improvement, I'd say that you could add some real subtitles. The auto-generated aren't all that good all the time and it's hard for me (non native English speaker) to truly grasp all of the dialogues sometimes, the sound can be a bit covered by noise or muffled, especially during some fast-paced jokes. That way, I could get all of the jokes! 👍🏻
At the same time, I'm not sure that there are good tools for decent subtitles so I could understand that it adds quite some extra work. Last time I tried to use Descript but the result wasn't that amazing.
That was awesome
I'm a little sad it was so "short" but so good. I want more. great work, all of you!
really excited to watch this now
Nice one Hiller. Superb ✌😎
