  • Concord allegedly cost a total development cost of 400,000,000 USD. And a majorty of the public thinks their character designs range from mediocre to garbage

    So, a rant:
    I have drowned myself in Concord redesign videos, because the whole debacle is so interesting and (financially) tragic, but it is a pet peeve of mine how many of the designers and artists that try their hand at fixing the final characters, or bringing up how they would make their versions (and so on and so forth) they often change the whole idea behind these characters!
    I know the main critique behind Concord characters is that they are the blandest of blandest in sci-fi media (I wholeheartedly agree), but I still think that it fails the whole exercise of trying to fix these characters if the first thing we do is completely "delete" the character, instead of trying to understand what the heck these (allegedly) $400 MI artists came up with and why, and if it is actually possible to work with the idea, or if it really is a case of just giving up and recycling the character into another thing altogether.
    That's where your Roka comes, because that's the first time I actually liked her redesign around these parts: it finally adresses that Roka is basically Farah but without using wings so you went for Space Age retrofuturistic rockets, it emphasizes the spacewoman look with more fun science fiction details, and a sick-er looking rocket launcher!

      Honestly, while I understand your take, at the same time, what we actually GOT from the characters is so hard to understand, read and pin down that I can't blame anyone for essentially rebuilding them from the ground up.

    I agree, the robot and the one girl with the red jacket are like the only remotely interesting designs in the game, they just need some more idk flare or personality. Like better shape language or more distinctive silhouette like you did.

    Knifelady's awesome and the rocketter is cute
    The baseball catcher tank- your redesign is neat, tho I would lean even more into that baseball catcher look, grid face protector and all.
    And yeah- main sht of Concord's failure is basically being indistinct and looking like dollar store cheap figurines made from probably cancer inducing plastic.
    I hope you redo the bucket robot too, cuz as much as "least offensive" the design is- you can pop that shit off more as the character looks really really fkin old sci-fi, ya know, Forbidden Planet kinda sht, which I think doesn't fit that well with the vibe the game looks like was aiming for. GIve that bot idk... more "curves", like give it that inverted cone-ish shape so it does look more like a distinct trashcan with a gun

    The shoulder shield is actually pretty rad, iirc it was actually some tiny ass little handheld doodad on the og character.

      Its really dumm how the shield was the tiniest screw driver-esque device when its such a core part of her kit

    After several concord redesign videaos I find it funny which characters artists find being almost the best XD you can hear how diverse aour opinions are actually.
    And side not - love that you kept the big helmet. I too find it actually best part of that design :D

    The character designs are made worse by the fact they feel close to something good. They all fall off the mark in a way that emphasizes how unappealing they are, and I think greater emphasis on style with less attempt at realism could get them on that mark

    Yeah commity to desgin character sounds like most of Concord characters have redeeming qualities something that's a good idea, but not emphasise enough like daggers and glasses. Side note: my problem who no one seen to touch is: characters, weapons and envorment in this game it's looks like each of them were on different place on scale realistic-fantasy you showed.

    Chef’s kiss. I love that you took the original concepts into consideration rather than just redo them from scratch. It’s good to highlight the parts of the designs that worked, and is much more informative for someone who may be trying to design their own characters.

      Yeah redesign can either be clean slate, or re-iterative. I wanted to go with the latter of just doing multiple versions with small changes, cause I thought the original designs had alot of potential

    I agree with a lot of what you've said, but I feel like you kinda left out some detail. When it comes to Realism vs Fantasy, for example, theres something I feel you're kinda glossing over. Its more of realism vs stylization too. One of the problems I feel with Concord is they go in HARD on realism. Proportions aren't really exaggerated much if at all, which is one of the problems with the silhouettes. The other problem? Personality. As in none of the characters have any. A large part of this comes off in how a character stands around. How you're introduced to them on the character screen, etc. Most of the characters just lazily stand there. A good example of this is how in your last drawing you chose something more dynamic in how they're handling their weapon, how they're not just standing on a flat surface, etc. The other designs of course do this slightly as well, but the last one really drives the point home.
    I unironically feel that if they had gone a more stylized route they wouldn't have received as much backlash. It feels like, to me at least, one of the biggest issues is that they tried to go with a more realism inspired art style. With the characters trying to show off how realistic they can make human and skin textures and so on vs trying to make them more individually interesting to look at. Basically it feels more like they were designed as a tech demo for corporate rather than to attract players.

      Nope but I can see why youd think that.
      Around 2017 my entire art style was based around skull girls before I found my own style.
      Im really good friends with one of the animators though
