This is the most to the point video I have watched on this topic. I appreciate your answer and explanation. I always wanted to know whether we should have any airflow out the nose while singing and the 5 percent airflow out the nose makes sense. Mystery solved.
i have hypernasality and i just hate the way my voice sounds. Moreover my normal voice is also very low and i talk with nasality too. i just don't know what to do.
That's some BS right there! You were born with exactly what everyone else got. That you're choking it off and restricting it is not your voice's fault. Take a step back from yourself and start with a sound that's easy to produce - like a moan. Or just lay on your back and just sigh. Take any basic sound that comes out and repeat it again and again. As you get more comfortable with it (or bored) you can explore different sounds nearby - but keep it really simple. Speaking with ease requires you get your emotions in check first.
@@coldhands6648 That's awesome! Keep asking for things to sound the way you want with comfort and control! It can be really frustrating/humbling at first but if you stay on it your behaviors will change. At least that's how it was for me.

Good Morning, Mark! This solves my question, hehe. I'd wondered about this. What a fun video. Seems I'm okay! YAY! But posture sure makes a difference in that air passage just like you mention. A habit is building too. Now I stop in here 'before' singing. [I've taken voice lessons, had various instructors over the years for choirs, swing choirs, theory, etc. (back in 'the day') but apparently, it's easy to become complacent. Should never have heard that Streisand doesn't find it necessary to warm up! (?)] Some things are best forgotten when they don't serve us, hehe. Thank you, again and again!

@@Ansulgoswami Hi there . What do you mean cough is the main reason ? Also why should someone choose the best word which can explain more , doesnt that mean you asking us to talk less than we can/want ? Why this is a solution ? Thanks for any explanation
I hate my voice especially when im singing. Im a choir member. After hearing our records, my voice is awful like a have a cold. I really need to fix it immediately because we always sing church songs every sunday. Its very awkward for those who hear my voice.
I use to have a beautiful voice. Now ppl say what happened because it comes off as nasally.I can pull off high tones but when I sing low tones.I hear it the most
This might be far from the topic but. How can one hit the high notes effectively? I can never hit high notes, I always fail. I get my air from my chest but my voice still cracks everytime. To some hitting high notes seem easy, but it has become my greatest fear of all. Heeeeeelppp
Your struggles over high notes are due to calling up way too much air pressure. The cracks are an indicator of that. It's not harmful to crack, but of course you want a smooth transition. So start here: ua-cam.com/video/vNxPhIWrom8/v-deo.html
This is an interesting take on nasal voices. Does this exercise work with Hyper AND Hypo nasality? If Hyponasality produces no tone shift when you pinch your nose, how can you tell if the hyponasality your voice is improving from this pinch exercise?

My voice has always been nasally and falsetto and I didn't like it at first, very teen sounding for an adult man, I sound like a lot of singers, I even made a video about it called "Singers I Sound Closest to", but the best match for my voice would probably be Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins despite not being a super fan of them, but Billy's nasal and soft voice does sound cool. I tried deepening my voice through self practice, listening to other people sing, etc, my biggest influence is listening to Mike Patton's deeper vocals. I think how I do the deep vocals is I think of my stomach or something and when I do, the sound gets lower, I apparently have 3 octaves.
I have a hyper nasal voice and when I close my nose I still feel it vibrate then I just sound hypo nasal. I know they say use your diaphragm but I don't know how, I breath, the air goes to my lungs and then out as I sing, I am mostly a mouth breather especially if I sing. I also wonder if I sing to loud, people on stage look like they practically scream into the microphone. Is that what they are doing or are they singing in a quieter voice and allowing the mic to amplify the vocal volume? There are some moments when I record myself and certain parts sound good without any sort of nasality, I don't care if I have to use software I just want to make song covers online. I do have mild scoliosis so the slouching could definitely be part of the problem, I need to correct my posture anyway. Can a broken nose cause issues? I had a perfect nose till a car accident when I was an infant broke my nose and it healed with a dorsal hump which was not there before. Also my rate of speech is slower, more so than normal for a lot of Southerners. That last bit of advice helps to push the air mostly from the mouth, though it makes my vocals quieter but it feels right to me so maybe volume is a production thing and I should record even if it does feel too quiet, some people I think naturally have that darker more whispery voice which is most noticable in that alternative type music like that song mad world, the singer stayed in a very quiet indoor tone. That feels more natural to me but I still want some software, it's just a hobby I want.
Oh my. I always thought my voice sounded annoying because it was nasally. But I think I'm what you described as hypo-nasal. I always sound "blocked". What can I do to change that? Thanks for the video!

I actually had a cute and beautiful voice before. But after watching My Little Pony, I tried to be like my favourite character, Fluttershy. Her voice was very nasal, and I wanted a voice like that. After trying, my voice became nasal. I was very happy at first, but I realized my mistake after I listened to one of my song cover recording in my phone ;-; I sound very cringe now. Can keeping your tongue on the bottom of your mouth and touching the back of your teeth also improve nasallity a bit? I find that when I speak with my tongue touching the bottom of my mouth my plugged nose opens up a bit
Thanks for asking Mark! I suspect you're thinking I should instruct exactly how to raise the soft palate by engaging the palatopharyngeus muscles in order to cut off the nasopharynx and reflect the sound exclusively into the oropharynx. After all, that's been the advice of vocal teachers for centuries. The problem with that instruction is two fold. The internal sense of our bodies is wildly distorted due to high and low concentrations of sensory nerve fibers and it misinterprets inhibition for ignorance. The solution (whether one thinks they told those particular muscles to behave differently or simply "asked" for the sound to alter) is the result of intention. My field has taken something autonomic and made it cognitive - only to then recommend it be practiced until it becomes autonomic again. A nasal sound is the result of many elements (culture, inhibition, temperament) which manifest physically. Over the years I've switched from addressing the symptom to addressing the psyche with more permanent results. Free the mind and the voice will follow!

If you can really help me here I'd appreciate it. I'm a male who has too much nasality/ specifically when sounding out words that are like EINE (dry, wine, fine, dine etc) and my SSS are sloppy. My tongue is too big for my mouth so it sounds lazy and lispy. In a way, saying this to identify and explain, not to be offensive, I sound gay and I am Jewish so there's also that natural nasality going on. Is there anything I can do to try (another EINE word) to sound more serious and straight-forward? It doesn't help that I don't have a deep voice naturally.
Those words SHOULD have a nasal quality (because they have an N) but what you're describing seems to be related to jaw tension. Do this: ua-cam.com/video/CepoWVNS_78/v-deo.html
I would actually live to use my voice more. I just actually hate the sound of my voice. (Maybe I'm exaggerating) lol But my voice does sound too high pitched and nasal. I will try your ideas here. If you can point me in any other direction I would be grateful for as much advice as possible.
Are there any exercises that could be performed without sounding or looking like a mad man ? Or is not worrying about how you look part of the exercise ? As funny as it may seem, this is a serious question.
Hi Mark thanks for this awesome video. I've hyponasality I always sound congested. I heard that nasality is also due to narrow or tension in throat. Is it correct ?? And do you have any exercise that you can tell me on how to relax or open the throat. God bless you..peace
Question, please. About half the female newscasters I hear have irritatingly nasal voices. (I'm female, so I figure I'm allowed to say this.) It drives me half insane, and that's how I happened upon your videos. I have wondered if it's just the shape of their nose, or if they are in need of vocal exercises or maybe just need to sit up straight. I expect men also do this, but it's less noticeable in the lower range. Could you comment?
I blame the Kardashians! It use to be a deep rich voice was the cultural standard for authority figures. But with the rise and success of that family - our culture now embraces that nasal sound (along with vocal fry) as the hallmark of a power-female. There's still a wide variety of female voices in music - which is why I offer exercises to reduce nasality for those who don't like it. To each her own!
Started taking voice lessons after two months I couldnt proceed class because of pain in my throat . I went to doctor and to check it out he found out that I have deviation of the right nasal cavity, soft palate lowered inflamed and red, tongue raised, tonsils inflamed. He wants to remove my tonsils and to raise my soft palate, and to fix my nose problem. Will that improve my singing?
Thank you so much for shedding light on this issue!!! I've hypo nasality, I always sound congested and sick... How much should I practice this for a day I mean for how long ??? ( Like for a month or two or maybe more ??) And also you said that the person with hypo nasality has a palate blocking up the sound entering nasal cavity therefore no brightness in the sound.right ?? Is there an exercise or any tip to let that 5% sound resonating in the nasal cavity ???
Thank you. I think I learned some bad habits as a kid and I don't know how to speak any other way. Also I have allergies. I've noticed that people hate nasal voices. It's like torture for them which means I get heard less.
is there a teacher sho can help with this kind of thing for speech? what are they called? i need one. i need to almost have a speech coach for a few months until i start using my proper voice.
So I only really sing, like actually sing, in the car. I can hit subharmonic and am very comfortable in 2nd/3rd octaves as I talk in those but I struggle with keeping a consistent subharmonic tune. I can reach the notes no problem, but it just feels like something goes awry when I get to that extreme and try to hold it for more than 2/3 seconds. Is this most likely just a sitting thing?
I'm hyponasal because all of my friends say my voice is very nasally but it's definitely not the the first one, since I don't sound anything like that and there's no difference when I sing the "aaaa" and block my nose. Is there anything I can do to change this?
First step: get new friends! Second step: record yourself speaking and singing and listen back. How would you describe the sound? How you you rather sound? Then record yourself speaking and singing again with that new sound as your goal. Rinse and repeat.
I was born with a hole in my throat and had my surgery at the age of 3 and the doctors said my voice will get better as i grow older and even people can see the difference and so do i comparing to the childhood videos i see but i wanna get rid of the nasal voice and wanna have a good simple voice like others please i need ur help!

This was So Cool! Thank You So Much!!
You're welcome!
very helpful
I would actually live to use my voice more. I just actually hate the sound of my voice. (Maybe I'm exaggerating) lol
But my voice does sound too high pitched and nasal. I will try your ideas here. If you can point me in any other direction I would be grateful for as much advice as possible.

Thank you very much sir
You're welcome - I'm happy to help!
Are there any exercises that could be performed without sounding or looking like a mad man ? Or is not worrying about how you look part of the exercise ? As funny as it may seem, this is a serious question.
You almost answered it in your question! Worrying about how you look IS the problem - so doing this exercise will definitely help.
@@voicelessondotcom well, that's gonna require a lot of mental energy to break through!
I’ve been forcing my voice for years to get rid of the “nerdy tone”
Relax it instead!
@@voicelessondotcom happy I found this video thank you

You're welcome!
Wish I could just belt like this spontaneously without no one around me getting bothered lol
Finding a private space to vocalize is half the battle!

I can stop my nasal voice no matter how hard I try it .can you make another video how to stop nasal voice forever

No - but it should improve your pain. I'm not a doctor so I can't recommend what you do.
Thank you so much for shedding light on this issue!!! I've hypo nasality, I always sound congested and sick...
How much should I practice this for a day I mean for how long ??? ( Like for a month or two or maybe more ??)
And also you said that the person with hypo nasality has a palate blocking up the sound entering nasal cavity therefore no brightness in the sound.right ??
Is there an exercise or any tip to let that 5% sound resonating in the nasal cavity ???
Do this exercise instead: ua-cam.com/video/2CI2dXIdq_4/v-deo.html
@@voicelessondotcom thanks for the reply , I'll definitely do that exercise but still continue this exercise right along . Is that right ??
@@sherry-mj7ou No Need. Do this one along with the one I suggested: ua-cam.com/video/CepoWVNS_78/v-deo.html
Very well explained.
I sound like I always have a clogged nose😭
That's hypo-nasality. So you need to introduce a little brightness into your sound by going Nay Nay Nay in a super bratty voice.
Thank you. I think I learned some bad habits as a kid and I don't know how to speak any other way. Also I have allergies. I've noticed that people hate nasal voices. It's like torture for them which means I get heard less.
Those early habits are stubborn but you CAN change them.
Where are all the subscribers?
My thought exactly!! :)
is there a teacher sho can help with this kind of thing for speech? what are they called? i need one. i need to almost have a speech coach for a few months until i start using my proper voice.
A speech pathologist is who you want to work with.
Were are the same
I was born with a hole in my throat and had my surgery at the age of 3 and the doctors said my voice will get better as i grow older and even people can see the difference and so do i comparing to the childhood videos i see but i wanna get rid of the nasal voice and wanna have a good simple voice like others please i need ur help!
