      Not always!
Admittedly trying to figure out Linux alone is very tough, but having someone experienced with Linux helping out has been a huge lifesaver!
I’m only a few days into using Mint so far, and I’m lucky enough to know a couple people who know their stuff when it comes to Linux, but there are plenty of places to ask depending on the distro, whether on the official forums, Reddit, etc!

Linux is tough. I was a longtime Windows user (about 10 years). Now Microsoft's questionable decisions have me rethink. I quit Windows 10 two days ago. Had problem with USB on Arch, went back to Windows 10, couldn't install, looks like I'm not supposed to go back. So I am choosing Fedora this time. Hopefully it would not be that hard as Arch.

@@TheDecodedMatter Love to hear that, I also started on a Fedora spin. The only "issue" I ran in to was that not every program offered an RPM (Fedora compatible) package, so I had to get comfortable building some things from source early on. Not a huge deal, just something to keep an eye out for! Just because there isn't an RPM doesn't mean you can't make it work :)

First experience of using Linux is doing the thing you turned on the computer for. Unlike with its old OS the computer will now do what it is told. It's true some commands are different from windows: cd.. now must have a space in it, and it is ifconfig not ipconfig. Time has been called on this: if someone accepted their PC as a company's product doing a list of what-is-offered, and not as their tool, really they slept through the previous IT revolutions since the 1970s and it is too late for them.

Mint is brilliant and is definitely a great place to start or even stay. However, it's based on a slightly older version of Ubuntu so if you find the packages are slightly outdated for your needs, then I would definitely try Fedora. That being said Mint will give a much more windows-like experience out of the box so I'd definitely go with that first

That's a good place to start. Linux mint is something else to try. Also consider Fedora with the kde desktop as another alternative and a different desktop. Also Fedora with gnome will be pretty different also. And Fedora itself is a bit different as a distro that updates more often, has a newer kernel (though Linux mint now has an edge version with a newer kernel).

Do MX Linux. Linux Mint gets bandied around an awful lot, and while it's a fine distro, it's got an unstable Ubuntu base. Linux Mint Debian Edition is much better, but lacks many features MX has right out of the box. As to Microsoft Office, I'm not really an expert on getting that to run, but that said, the process will be much the same on pretty much any distro of Linux. I do hear Bottles seems to do fantastically for getting Windows programs to run. And as for games, Steam's got you covered big time. No worries there. Unless you absolutely HAVE to play a game that has invasive anti-cheat attached to it... (Though even then, some anti-cheat solutions still work with Linux.)

    • @JohnSmith-qt4pv

If gaming is your focus then I'd recommend Nobara(fedora based), Pop!_OS(debian/Ubuntu) or an arch based distro(not arch itself unless you're brave) like Garuda, manjaro or cachyOS purely for the easy to install and up to date proton and the NVIDIA driver (you want the magic 555 beta driver) packages from the arch AUR.
Office 365 and teams are webapps and will run inside a web browser or you can just use a windows VM. Office 355 will not run on Linux. Older standalone offline versions of office will run with wine just fine if you all you need is to work with word documents, excel and powerpoint without all the online integration.
Teams you may be able to install as a PWA with chromium or chrome.

Contrary to the previous comment. I strongly recommend Mint or LMDE. I ran Mint for around 10 years, and rarely had any problems. For MS Office compatibility, LibreOffice should be able to import and export the formats. As for Teams, I don't know. Mint or LMDE are pretty easy to get used to. They're made to be easy for Windows refugees.
Mx looks good, but I haven't spent much time on it.
I suggest getting a small ssd and install Linux on it. You can keep the Windows drive as it is so you can use it if you need to.

FAT32 file system works fine in Linux as a data drive, USB stick, whatever... but that cannot be what your problem is, a photo app shouldn't have any issues or even know what the file system is on Windows or Linux. I am not sure what you are talking about unless you meant win32? You could try running it with Wine, and use something like Bottles... but that can get tricky. Your best bet is not be so tied to one program only made for Windows and find an alternative... you might even like it better.

I simply had it with windows after I heard about the AI and Recall updates for win11 and Zorin seems fine in the videos and as for hardware it seems there's no issues.
Kernel 6.5 tells me nothing, but if Zorin also have a paid version, that means that someone have taken care of compatibility issues. Having the right drivers is needed. That's it.
Zorin also has Wine and bottles installed automatically. So there's a big aim for people that comes from windows to use Zorin.

No way!!! it will take some time, and I'll will find software with Linux dedicated versions and will try to use Wine and Bottles for things I didn't find Linux version for.
Not doing so, is failing myself from moving to Linux.
Basically, three things are a must.
1- A notation software - There's MuseScore Studio - Pro level and free
2- A Daw - There are many options with Native Linux installation - Pro level. Some free, some paid.
3- A video editing program - Davinci resolve has a Linux native installation that get's lifetime updates. Two versions. Free with some limitations, and a paid one.
All the other software are less important and have many equivalate Linux software.
Internet browsers works the same on all three platform, and the most important thing is that it won't have AI and Recall to give Windows unwanted options under the hood to mess with my system. I simply want to create without any hassle of greedy companies.
Now, let's be practical. Can Zorin run a portable software that don't need an installation?

As far as I'm aware there are no issues with Intel processors. As far as Nvidia is concerned, as long as you stick to the more mainstream ones (which you probably should be anyway as a new user); they will either ship with the drivers, come with a tool with which to install them, or have easy to find instructions online.

In my opinion, intel CPU and integrated graphics are pretty much fine. Be careful with the newest iris integrated graphics as you need to make sure that the kernel version in the distribution is compatible. Same for Intel arc cards. Google for Linux alternatives to the software you use. There could be something but of course you'll have to learn to use it. Also, be careful with wifi cards if you want to use wifi. Some are better than others for Linux compatibility. I would personally buy slightly older hardware as opposed to the most recent. Remember that Linux doesn't have the same hardware usage that windows does.

  • @TheDiner50

Windows Vista. It is super important to get a new computer fast enough and 'modern'. Yet the price tag and Windows XP was simply to good. So majority of people tried Vista on a slower machine. Even if brand new the machine simply was to underpowred. Or GPU/device drivers added onto problems/crashes Vista istelf had enough of to begin with.
You got modern laptop? Windows10 or 11 right now? Do not bother with Linux on that. You got a older laptop and maybe desktop office PC? Best being if it is a early Windows 10 or late 7 machine? Give Linux a honest try.
Even Apple computers of older vintage are amazing to use for Linux.
Simply put. Get a computer that is suited for Linux. Modern laptops might be a headace not worth dealing with. Yet a old Lenovo or Dell laptop? Sure. Hp? Sure. Linux is not Vista. Linux is like Windows XP or Windows 7. With enough updates thrown at your way to get annoyed how often you need to update the OS and applications. Updates you paid nothing for mind you! Windows bricks your computer even when you paid good money for the Windows OS. Even if the computer came pre installd with it? You pay for it one way or a other. Linux somehow dose not make you the product. Or make you pay $100. Or a monthy subsrbtion whatever.... Microsfot is going to do. Can not even bother to go back and fix that sentense... It is simply unacceptable.
Find a laptop or desktop computer with 4-8GB of ram. 2-4cores. Hopefully Linux Mint is going to installl without a single problem. And run as well as old Windows 7 and Xp did. It maybe is not very flashy or fancy. Yet feels like Android. Since Android is basicly Linux. And Apple is based also on Linux/OS2.
5 years ago or whatever? Linux Mint was what people recommended to me. Today? Linux Mint is so good and easy to understand and use that even I can not but recomend people to start out with it. They really have made a Linux Windows replacment. Without being Windows in any bad way.
If you think of it as the Android OS for computers/laptops? Your going to have a good time. It is a better Windows for the masses. Better then ChromeOS. Better then Android. And so easy and reliable today that even I have SSD's with Mint on them. Almost every computer I have got Mint on it. Defacto part of the computer. That or Debian.
If my main Linux install on my main tower is having problem? No matter if it is Arch or OpenSuse. Fedora or whatever! If anything is going wrong?
Linux Mint sits right next to the SSD with Windows 10. One reboot away into a OS that simply do as told. Even if not very fancy or power-user. So lean and comfortable. It is a Android without the crap.
The only reason Windows is relevant today? Outside of how many grew up and know nothing but Windows? Hardware. Drivers. You need to get the right hardware. And without a big push from buyers? Windows is going to remain and probobly keep Linux as being more hazzel then it is worth. Yet if AMD/Intel/Nvidia/Lenovo/Hp... Everyone have to support Linux as equal to Windows? Windows is doomed to history books.
So when Windows 11, 12, 13 comes out? And that hardware generation is usless on Linux? Do not be supriced if that is intentional. Consider your purcases. Is it going to be good for you? Or are you being forced into a OS you do not want. Simply becasue the hardware is Windows only. Or Apple only. Any 'AI' marketing is going to be pointless as a selling point. Get the computer that do not screw with you. Linux is not perfect! Mind you. Yet when was Windows perfect? Xp? Windows 7?
Edit: Command Line. You know Windows is so broken the last cople of years that I used CMD on Windows more then on Mint. And command line on Windows is the worst command line you can ever be faced with. Any Windows problem is the worst problem your going to be faced with. It is not Windows that is going to fix your problem. It is the internet and community around you. So why bother with Windows if Windows refsuses to help you... Every problem with Windows results in reinstall. Since it is such a awful Os to fix anything in.
And I have more anxiety reinstalling Windows then anything else. Linux for the most part today is such a nice install process that it makes Windows feel like a hostage senario. The only thing Windows got going for it is drivers and software made to run on it. And majority of software made to run on Windows today is some subscribtion service.
