- It's been a LONG time since I got behind the wheel of the ol' big-eye-small-eye!! One of the last true "built like a tank" Mercs imho, it's lasted a lifetime as it promised to do back when it was launched in 1995.
Designed by Steve Mattin under the wing of legendary Merc designer Bruno Sacco, it shocked the world when it was first unveiled. Many questioned the headlight design especially, wondering if MB had gone insane. But its design has transcended time for sure, as it still looks contemporary.
With almost 30 (Yes, thirty!) variants available in total, including diesel engine'd units overseas, this was the bread-and-butter model of the Merc range, and a worthy successor to the iconic W124. This particular variant is a E200, which means road tax is less than RM300 a year, unlike it's bigger sibling the E280, for which you'll be forking out rm1.6k a year for road tax, in order to enjoy that sonorous 6cyl sound, and oodles of silky-smooth power on tap.
Still an incredibly solid and robust car, this one was bought very cheap and is currently in the process of being restored back to its former glory!! It's really wonderful to see it back on the road 🙏🏽😊

I am driving a W210 E200 Kompressor. Bought in 2012 from the 1st owner. It's a very nice car and classic!! More refined than W124. Put a lot of efforts and RM in upkeeping this car in its best driving conditions. It is a good car and quite affordable in the maintenance comparing to newer versions of the same class. my dad had one. He bought it new from C&C for Rm340k in 2001 Oct. had many memories in the car. back then I used to follow him to send the car for service and there used to be some accident vehicles around the showroom. there was never one that had damage passed the firewall. these cars were solid. His car was an e200 non-kompressor. as for the wheels on this w210 is from a w124 late model. based on the interior it looks like a UK/Japan spec as C&C didn't have memory seats on the 200s. the higher CC ones had. solid and safe car.

my dad still has one today! he bought it in 2002/2003 second hand, for a good price!(bought in uk, brought all the way back here). the e200 2.0 NA engine is crazily solid and bulletproof and not too bad or expensive to maintain. does feel a little underpowered for the car but alas good enough. the gb is a bit jerky but hey its a 20 year old car haha.
some interior plastics are breaking down though.
but the car still has them vault-like solid heavy doors and i love that!

My dad had 1 of these also, drove it to Kedah from KL, then go to teluk intan through Beruas, then straight to KL via Sekinchan, didnt feel old at old. He bought it in 2017, no problem until now. Even my younger sister love to drove it around and she love the designs. Yeah I agree with you a car that never get old haha

Hi Chris. Love your content. I've actually been wanting to get the w210 e200 as a daily runner for my dad who has had a W126 300SEL for the longest time. The roadtax is a tad too expensive. What might the average annual maintenance cost look like for a w210 e200 of average condition? And is there any known issues that I should be on the look out for? Looking forward to your feedback!
Thanks Fany!! I've never owned a W210, but from what I've heard from this cars' owner and others, it's a very well built machine that's easy to maintain, unlike the W211 which replaced it. Adhere to periodic maintenance and get it checked out when u feel something isn't quite right, and u shld be fine. Remember with all older cars, preventive maintenance is key, all the best!!👍🏾😀

Lovely car, but get the variant without Airmatic, if possible. It's prone to failure and costs an absolute bomb to replace. Many owners have converted the Airmatics to conventional suspension because of that 😊

I've been thinking about buying Mercedes Benz E 280 elegance 1998 from my grandpa. He bough it in 2000 from Germany (we live in Finland). It has no outside rust (that is rare) and it's in great condition. Shifter changes greatly and everything else works great. 👍

I have a 2000 E240 2,6 V6 petrol, with just shy of 60,000 miles. It is my daily driver, once again, since the C180 petrol car I bought from Mercedes developed engine problems. I get around 30mpg on a run. My good friend calls it Miss Daisy as in the movie. I have had the car for about 10 years and 20,000 miles.

The OM 5 cylinder engine traces its roots all the way back to the venerable 300D. Reliable but..verrry noisy. Make friends with the Ssangyong Rexton Club for engine parts sourcing. They use the same engine.

drove the manual 1996, e200 2.0. Its a fun car to drive. The one i drove was a classic spec with orginal AMG 17 inch rims.

I have a 1998 E430 4.3 litre Elegance V8 and I paid
$16, 000 cash for it 9 years ago. I just adore the W210s and I love driving it, it's in mint condition as I've had the interior roof lining redone and if something needs to be done on the car I do it. it's Green Black Metalic with original wheels. I live in Queensland Australia and was going to take my mum down to the Great Ocean Road which is a few thousand kilometres round trip but sadly she got dementia and we didn't get there. Long way to go for her to say "where have we been?". This car will last the rest of my driving days.
Oh my, so sorry to hear about your mum 🙏🏽😢, but thank you very much for sharing that! We never got the 430 here cos we pay a yearly road tax according to the size (c.c.) of the engine and that 430 would have cost a bomb every year just to keep it legally on the road, just for the road tax alone. Which is also why the W140 S320 is cheap here now, due to the crazy road tax. I think the biggest engine W210 we got here was the E280, I'm not sure if we got the E320 here, maybe, but that would have been pushing it, haha!! Most popular here now seems to be the 200 and 230, the annual road tax on those are still somewhat liveable 😊

Not too bad, but this was when the bean counters stepped in, and more inexpensive materials were used during production, so be wary of interior bits and components that haven't withstood the test of time 🙏🏽😊

Shld be, but this one is 4sp auto, 4cyl, non-Kompressor, Elegance. And yes, this is the last facelift E200 variant, that bumper is stock 😊
Its a 5 g-tronic not a 4spd. The 4g-tronic had different shifter. And yes the car is defenitely a facelift model all the way. The reason you only hear 4 gears is you run it in w mode wich skips 1st gear
Chris, wanna check wit u is it expensive to get the spare key? My neighbour had one and he got a new key (due to loss) and it cost him RM2K..Is it that expensive?
Ouch, 2k for just a key? Sounds more like the whole ignition system was changed for that price. This needs to be done when the car key with immobilizer is coded to the whole system, and all the original keys have been lost, I reckon 😟

Ooopsss..lupa. Things to look out for are trims not falling off and the Kompressor is well oiled. Most owners tak tahu that the dang thing needs an oil change too. The rest..aiyah..is like telling Mr.Preuninger how good a GT3 is. Good Luck matey...

Love this car , currently my daily is 208 CLK 230. Should have picked up this one instead , will forever love the long sleek styling and the 4 eyes. It's like a budget Bentley Continental 😂 but I can't for the life of me understand the gearbox. Hesitant to upshift , feels like it has a mind of its own. Could it be on its way out ? My example has nearly 250,000 kms. Interior didn't hold up too well , lots of creaking for the C pillar. Plus I swear a demon lives in the electronics. Aircond speed if set to 1 puts the fan at full blast for some reason. Still love it though.

My dad got a W211 for 25k last year, and I think he should have gotten a W208 instead. Cuz u know say few years later if u happen to sell it, it would have a higher price than the w211 cuz the W208 is a coupe but the w211 is a sedan 😥
Hi Chris. Just to share. That so called paint patina on the front wing is a sign of TLC..for me terlebih loving care. It came from over polishing the car. Polishing centers normally use G3. It is actually a finer version of valve grinding paste. Imagine rubbing sandpaper onto the clearcoat. The most your paint can endure is 4 times. By the fifth time the clearcoat will all be gone exposing colorcoat to the elements. Factory paint finish should last for a long long time with proper care. Observe those faded paint cars on the road nowadays. Most are barely 10 years old. Most had underwent unnecessary polishing job. Both my 2000 to 2007 kancil and 2007 to 2018 fd had never been polished. Just a once a month thorough wash and quarterly clay bar cleaning followed by a coat of wax afterwards. Both car paints still have that liquid shine look when sold along with the mandatory unavoidabe battle scars, dings and scratches picked up over the years ( yes, this is what patina actually means) much to the appreciation of the new owners.
My advice. Keep away from polish. Use claybars and wax instead. Never chemical wash the wheels. Avoid using tyre polish. Wash tyres to remove brake dust using normal detergent and berus sabut. Unwaxed tyres will actually get a nice black rubber colour as the tyre heats up during driving getting even darker if driven for an outstation trip as tyre rubber compound emits its own oil activated by its own heat. Just avoid tyre wax and see for yourself the result.

My dad have one. In my own personal experience. This car driving experience was superb compared to new car I've been driving like Vios, Yaris, Myvi and Saga. Although it's old, it's still gold. Easily can reach 160 km/h with little to no vibration. Steady boss.

What about a W211 e240? Is that a good car with decent reliability that can be a daily driver assuming you don't mind the road tax and fuel cost? The NA V6 is creme brulee smooth

@Bill McQ yes they had the SBC removed. But it was also the facelift that sees the introduction of the M272 2.5 V6 engine, that is known to have balancing shaft issues.

Those are excellent luxo-barges!! But be warned, they're cheap to buy, but expensive to maintain. Road tax is just one of those crazy costs to contend with 😁

Hi Chris... Nice review but sorry to say.. The w210 has rims design that are meant for a w124... And the model you reviewed is a base model without the supercharger or Kompressor...and to be honest this is one model I really adore... And the acceleration is sluggish is due to a air mass flow meter requiring replacement

Design is subjective. But to these eyes, the E39 BMW seems to have aged better. But my favourite car from this class back then was the 2nd gen Lexus GS.
That Lexus is a fine, fine car indeed!! But yes, styling is indeed subjective. Tbh, I didn't like this cars' looks when it first appeared, I thought it was ugly, but now for some weird reason I find them very appealing 😁

I have a E320 and they go into the 400s so you're not accurate in that point. Also winter and summer modes not sport, there's nothing sporty about the performance in that mode. In winter mode the transmission starts off in second gear to limit slippage and in summer mode first gear because torque isn't an issue then. Nice video overall I can tell you love this car. Can you find that model in standard transmission? Because in America people are too lazy to drive those very much so most cars bought are automatic

3.50 its actually a 5 speed box. I have owned one of these and sold it because mine was that abused and couldn't be salvaged electronics wise, at least by me. But I'm going to get one again

They have 5 speeds forward with lockup on 3,4 and 5 and 2 gears reverse.. These gearboxes are solid and can take a whole lot of torque!

If not mistaken, this is the 5speed 722.6 gbox. Nevertheless, it is a very reliable merc but when u already drive the w140, u will look no other than sonderklasse w140..😎

Yeah these were new when I was a kid. Chris I have to agree. Ugly as balls at the time, especially in the early 2000's when W124s (especially Masterpieces!!) were still kinda new. But these cars look so good nowadays! Wonder if its to do with styling dimensions? Fwiw the current C E and S class look more alike than they ever have...

Well-kept but 2800cc would be just right for her. Still a smooth ride and this was among the last of the build to last Merc’s out there. I think with this model the electronics started to creep in making it a bomb to maintain

Thanks!! Yes it's comparable in terms of class/segment but not in terms of drivability. The w210 is an elegant cruiser, whilst the e39 is more a driver's car imho. But both are excellent in their own way 👍🏾😀

Hi Chris, the wheels on this is not original, the wheel look like is from the W140 S-class. There is another model W210 E200 with kompressor, you should try that and you will love it more. Mine is already 19 years old this year, so far only the rubbers and headlamp is degraded due to the sun UV.

@@ChrisWeevilGarage, so far with 168k km, the kompressor is still working fine. Wanted to service but mercedes encourage to change the whole unit. Still pull from the traffic light or overtake other easily.

I’m about to drop cash for a 2000 W210 for my dad… pretty good condition single-owner car. Need to refresh interior and clean it up, touch up paint on the outside but otherwise still original mostly. Been hesitating but my mechanic is pushing me to get it. I just got a 2009 W204 C200K and super loving it, also a single-owner car. Tell me I won’t regret the W210… cos I’ve been eyeing the W124 to fulfill my unfulfilled childhood dream of owning one lol!
Get both, cos the W124 & W210 are still 2 of the best Mercs ever built imho. Solid, tough, dependable and built to last a lifetime, they're still excellent cars, I have no regrets whatsoever having owned both 😊

Nice car there dude..I think this is the facelifted model.The difference is very subtle.I might want to hazard a guess the interior may have been redone before because most W210 I saw has interiors that has seen better days.This model has lost that over engineered compared the the previous models but IMHO it's not the worse.That crown goes to the W211 and MB improved upon it on the W212 model.

@@ChrisWeevilGarage i like the e12 front looks..the rear is not so nice though..mine was a manual..no power steering means driving a lorry. 2 reasons why I traded for another E12 was that particular year had twin brake servos and one was faulty. Got hold of a replacement.should got a pair but very expensive.the last and most annoying was the carburettor.That Solex 4A1 was infamous for being overly complicated.Did try to repair but to no avail.Found a new old stock at rm3k and no guarantee it will work properly.20 years ago.On a bright side this car brought me the BMW sting..hahahahaha..sorry for the ranting

@@brianpereira5195 service history would be great of course, I doubt this car would have problems with rust either. It's a good V6 engine, not sure about FC tho. General rule of thumb, get the best one u can, something that's been taken care of. You'll be able to tell the difference easily 😊

the w210 was the end of the built to last cars! The beginning of of the difficult cars to maintain ,,diagnosing the electronics is a night mare -- it never lived up to the W124 longevity ,,not even mentioning the rust issues on the W210

@@ChrisWeevilGarage the w140 is not mercedes' best offering If you are going to like mercs -my suggestion is to stick to analogue vehicles -. 1995 w124 being the last of the mohicans . Typically with mercs, the further back you go, the better the quality Sorting out the electricals of w210 and w140 and beyond proves to be a nightmare every time The real sweet spot is w123 and w126 , i'm still looking for a really nice 123 !! With the future being electric ca I It will become harder to fid a mechanic that can fix those mercs .with complicate electricals. If one wants to collect vintage cars it will be better advice to go strictly ANALOGUE .

Solid car though not as well built as the W124 series I had the 1st gen, an E320 M104 motor. The only car that ever left me stranded tepi jalan was that car. Gearbox problems.
Anyways..the W210 E-Klasse and W220 S-Klasse came at a time when MBZ Top Brass decided to 'go green' and instructed the bean counters and engineers downstream to use recyclable materials, lightweight electronics and the resulting debacle caused great damage to their reputation of making solid exec rides.
And...that's why the e39 got the best Exec in the world then. Well..at least till Mr.Bangle fooked up BMW's design and back to MBZ the mantle of most desirable execs go. Mcm ping pong between the two!

Chris Wee it was a design adaptation from racing builds in rally and endurance races. That's why it's out of place when it first came out, cos it's not properly integrated with a bodyline shape.
In w211, the elliptical lost its symmetry and became skewed and became more inclined to the flow of Mercedes then body shape.
There were E320 models.
But I don't think the w210s per se were ever raced or rallied right?
