Mercury 2 Stroke V6, 60mph for $500, is it possible???

- Welcome back to my channel! There was an amazing response to the first episode in this series that covers the design and development history for the Mercury 2 Stroke V6 Outboard, and I'm proud to present episode 2 where I bring home another project boat.
Why?
Well, it had a running Black Max XR2 V6, and it was $500 so I pretty much had to buy it, and my girlfriend is super cool. I'll go over the Cee Bee Avenger's condition, show you how to check the transom, talk about the 150hp XR2, try to get that started, and then go inside to show the current status of the Porsche 911 project car, and the Mercury 200hp V6 BlackMax with CLE gearcase for the SST project. Stay tuned, and thanks for the support! Cheers!

The beeping is either an overheat alarm coming from one of the sensors in the heads grounding out either correctly or due to bad wiring, or it’s your oil injection system.
Most guys delete theirs by ordering a cheap blockoff plate, removing the oil pump shaft and wiring, and premixing 50:1 or 40:1 for 6000+ rpm running.
Most of the oil injection gears connected to the crankshaft were plastic and would inevitably shear off at an inopportune time leaving you without oil at high RPM and cook your motor very quickly. I just premix my XR4, piece of cake.
I concur cheers
K, I'll pull the cowl and poke around, but it wasn't beeping when I was running it on muffs. Going to do a waterpump and gearcase oil, fuel filter, and I'm not sure what else, then see what it'll do on the water. I'm not sure how the choke systems work on these yet either; I didn't see a mechanical lever on the controls like I remember. Yeah, I was planning on doing premix on the SST, but for this Avenger, I'm not sure yet. Are there higher quality gear replacements available somewhere? Not mixing is pretty nice.... ngl. It's just one more variable.
@@ADDvanced you push the key in to engage the choke. It’s usually a shutter valve that closes over the carb throats. Some models have an enrichment system instead but it works just the same way.
If you’re going thru the motor to verify the maintenance/health do the following:
- compression test
- spark plugs
- inspect plug wires
- replace poppet valve
- replace impeller and housing/gaskets
- replace any questionable fuel/vacuum lines
- replace gearcase oil
-remove and test the thermostats to make sure they open at 140 ish degrees
The motor will NOT pee until the heads reach the temp in which the thermostats open. This is normal and expected. Don’t put your hand in the pee stream unless you want to burn it.
@@ryancollins2483 Thanks for the tips! Trying to see if I can get parts before next weekend, fingers crossed!
Sarah, all cyclists have either done it or will do it or are at least terrified of wiping out. Once it happens you realize several things. Bikes are tougher than they look. Collar bones are weaker than they should be. It's not the end of the world and you will regain your confidence. You are a trooper.
Great words, thank you! I've had stitches a few times, but biking keeps you healthy and it's a lot of fun.
I just came across your videos yesterday. Saw your 1000 muscle boat. Then subscribed.
Love your content! I own a body shop and have been restoring classic vehicles for decades.
Im now getting into boating.
I just came across a really wild 73 Schuster Tahiti bubble deck jet boat with brand new jet drive for 1200. Gold flake and burgundy with brown diamond tuft seats. Looks strait out of the 70’s! It just needs a good polish (possibly a repaint) and motor.
My GF and I are very excited about getting into this project.
You folks are awesome! Very inspirational.
Thanks Johnny! Boating is more fun than cars when the weather is hot, for sure! Post videos if you pick it up!
'Road bikes and gravel don't mix'. Sara(h?)'s a real trooper! And: Ouch! That must have hurt!
The FBI will be raiding your compound, due to 'stealing' that boat. I'd have thrown my shoulder out of joint, reaching for my wallet.
If they raid my compound, I expect my followers to storm the capital on my behalf. Maybe with nail guns. lmao. People are so insane these days.
Lol Sarah doing the two-stroke Brappp.
Sorry about your bike accident Sarah just remember there's no shame in wearing a full face helmet on a bicycle I also recommend gloves knee pads and elbow pads.
I am 64 and a half years old and fully dress out whenever I go to ride the street hard. I love you guys peace out.
She's tough! She rode home after that, bleeding all over the place. Cheers!
Check with West Marine or a marine Parts store. All you need is a side mount forward / reverse shifter control. And, I think you should put the 200 hp power head on the 500-dollar boat and get a 250 or 300 hp for the sleekcraft. I think you would be much happier with the results in both cases. I know money is always an object, but if it wasn't, I would put a new mercury 450R on the Sleekcraft and give the speed-limited lakes the middle finger or fanger, depending on what part of the country you're from.
The posts on the 200 are for an oil bottle, as the engine was originally oil injected.
A couple of things. The poppit valves changed a lot over the years. You must get the exact one for your year. They open at about 2000RPM, bypassing the thermostats and allowing lots of cooling water to circulate.
Only a couple of years of Merc V6 motors had accelerator pumps. Not sure if your has it, but pumping the throttle before starting is useless. Hold the choke down, with a little bit of throttle and crank until she starts.
A lot of folks recommend removing the oil injection and idle stabilizer. The oil injection is driven off the crankshaft with a plastic gear. These can fail. Run 50::1 premix instead.
I have a 16' Avenger and run a '93 Merc 135HPV6. Set up correctly she will run in the mid 60's
Total Bargain. Love a Merc V6 and really looking forward to seeing how the two boats and their motors progress.
Yeah buddy, I mean honestly I'm not even sure where to park this thing yet, but how can you not buy that for 5 hundo? Deal and a half.
@@ADDvanced absolutely!! I have gotten some boats, and motors, that were really Soo far out of my price range but because of whatever I got them for super cheap.. the earlier V6 Merc/Mariner outboard motors are Soo incredibly reliable and long lasting it's very hard to beat! Oh and they're so much lighter than these heavy arse tanks they call outboard motors these days!
@2:10 - ouch!! Glad to see you're ok! (well relatively I guess - still an ouch!!)
not super fun
Convert it to pre-mix with the least amount of ethanol in it will run for ever. Just make sure transom is good on boat an not got any cracks etc that would allow water ingress.
☝️😊🇬🇧
That motor with not pee right away. It had thermostats and will start peeing after it warms up
No, it only has to fill the engine block's water passageways and then it'll start coming out the telltale.
Thermostat's have holes in them and let water pass, just let's a bit more after thermostats open up. I have never noticed a change in how much comes out the telltale between cold and full operating temperature..
**Also, the smaller V6 motors(2.0, 2.4 and 2.5 liter) use a high pressure, low volume impeller where as the 3.0 liter and other newer big outboards use a high volume, LOW pressure impeller and pee much better at idle then these other ones.. these low volume impellers barely pee at idle..
Been watching your channel for a while now. I really like your toys and am of a similar approach: Buy'em cheap, fix'em up, enjoy'em and if you need to sell 'em, be confident because you can recover your investment.
I just joined UA-cam to wish Sarah the best in healing! She's very pretty and you guys get along great! Please explain the concept of patina to her, Rob! Sometimes the scars (and I truly hope she heals without) add to the beauty....and to her street cred!
Keep the posts coming!!!!
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah some people see all the vehicles and assume I have a lot of money, but the reality is I just buy cheap garbage and fix it, have fun, flip it, etc. I haven't lost money on a vehicle in almost 2 decades at this point. My daily drivers are under $5,000 20+ year old Hondas. Lots of people don't think twice about financing a $30k car that's depreciating, I don't get it.
She's healing pretty quick, a few days ago her face was making colorful yellows and purples, lol
@@ADDvanced Amen to both the fast healing, and also to not understanding WHY anyone would want to spend 30, 50, 80++ thousand dollars for a car that's gonna be worth a fraction of that within a few years!!?! I've never spent more than the 1 new motorcycle I bought (after having over 15 street bikes that I just bought with my tax return or maybe $2k etc) for $10.5k total out the door, and everything else has been well below that!!
@@BabyCharlotteschannel Long live cheap fun garbage!
The old black max had thermostats so it won’t pump water until thermostats open I had a 86 175 it was a 2.4L but I think the xr2 was a 2.0L they had xr4’s and xr6 which was a 2.5L the alarm in the video I belive is overheating alarm
Love the videos and your whole dynamic been watching for a few years
@@44beef Thanks for the kind words and info! Haven't heard the alarm in real life yet, going to see if I can change the waterpump before this weekend.
@@ADDvanced id definitely delete the oil injection aswell. It's super easy to do. many great running merc v6s have blown up due to the plastic oil pump drive gear faulting.
If I take a bit longer to idle I tend to have a steadier stream too.
ayoooo! Nice
May become a steady stream once the thermostat opens. Regardless an impeller should be changed out every year.
1985 Black Max. Might be 150 or 200 with 150 cowl.
Broke down the serial and it's an 86 or 87 XR2.
What a steal bro. Like you said, just in the right place at the right time for a desperate sell. Keep up the cool content. (still love that shirt lol).
Thanks buddy! Stoked about this thing; going to throw it in this weekend and see what happens. Cheers!
There was an oil tank at one time, oil pump was weak, so mix your oil with gas.
Def doing premix on the SST 200hp build
Hoses typically don’t have enough pressure with muffs on
I'm definitely having cooling problems
My 250 EFI Merc will not piss on a hose only. New impeller t stats etc. Has to be in a barrel to draw enough volume
Use Berryman B12 in the gas it cleans dirty fuel injectors and Carburetors fuel passages and jets... They always sound like a top fuel dragster.... nice buy
Ha! You must be spying on me. I dumped a can of it into the tank and filled it up with fresh gas. New episode in a couple days to see the results! Cheers!
Your overheating issue still might be the poppet valve, actually the spring..i have a 200 black max same issue...mercury came out with a bulletin regarding this issue, they recommend cutting one of the twists of the spring off because the springs sometimes can be too stiff and the poppet wont open...i went to menards and got a similar size spring but with less tension and works fine...investigate this avenue first before taking the powerhead off again...cheers
Hey that's the first I'm hearing about this! Thanks!
It doesn't pee very well on muffs, try it in the water
It is the water pump that is what is causing the beeping
I have worked on outboards for 39 years. That motor was made only for 2 years '86 & 87
Thanks!!!! Huge help right there, you da real MVP! Cheers!
I agree. I was a Mercury dealer back in 1985/86/87 and pretty sure the XR2 came out in 1986. Putting a new impeller in is pretty basic...but i have found that often running a V6 on 'muffs' doesn't give the engine enough flow/pressure
, if you can back it down a ramp or run the engine with the gearcase in a tank of water you will probably get a better flow of water out the 'pee' hole.
I'm so jealous!!! That's an amazing score for $500! A little TLC and that's going to make a fun little ripper!
Goal is to throw it in this weekend and see what happens. Stay tuned!
@@ADDvanced can't wait to see how she runs for ya!!
*Unfortunately with the garbage gasoline we get these days, good, clean carbs can be gunked up very quickly if left to sit for even just a couple of months. One thing I recommend to all of my customers and fellow boaters is to run fuel stabilizer in the gas, ESPECIALLY if you might not get to run the motor again for a while! Just putting enough stabilizer in the tank at least a mile before you put the boat on the trailer will keep the fuel fresh in both the carbs and fuel system as well as the gas tank too!
Hope that helps keep your motors in good running condition!
my son and i have been looking for so long for a speed boat project and cant come up with anything in our budget and then with the most discouraging face he shows me this video im without words.....would you be willing to sell this boat?
Maybe some day! Have some plans first.
$500. You stole that Avenger! Great score. Get Sarah some gravel tires for that bike. Heal fast Sarah!
I would have felt bad but he slashed the price to $500 to get me to grab it that day.... it worked! That will always work! :D
Got a 1970 16' CeeBee Avenger tower of power. Had it doing 50 mph
Nice! I'm hoping to see 60, but we'll see!
@@ADDvanced If the 150 runs right your 16 footer will haul but. I bet with just 2 seats you may hit 70.
Day I did that had a fat boy in the passenger seat 260 I was 190. Theses boats are fun but early morning or calm lake. Anything over foot n half.white caps. You get the shit beat outa you.
Just some tips for you. On the Avenger, dont run that jacking plate too high as that Merc 150 sti has a 'normal' water pick up on the leg, too high & you'll loose water cooling. The other Merc has the Speed master or Sport master leg & wter pick up is at the front, but just below the point on the 'torpedo' (for the prop shaft) so you can run that till approx 1/2 way horizontally on the torpedo! 3 blade vs 4 blade? 4 blade for hole shot, more 'grip' for social skiing, etc. 3 bladers come in that many variations these days, but if you are looking for just speed, then look into racing props, if you intend to run the prop as a surface piercing type, using the hyd jacking plate, then, then in old school terms, used to be called a 'chopper'. If you are running the SST Merc on the tunnel hull, then I estimate you'll be looking at around 27" pitch, but just guessing, as each hull motor combo is different. I run a Labsport 1700 with a 2001 model, 3 litre 200hp on it, with a jacking plate & 23" pitch 3 blade, & I have to be careful as rpm limiter cuts in because there isn't enough load on the prop to hold the revs down at wide open. I mainly social ski with it, but it is an ex ski race boat, & if I was going to race it, I would start with a 27" 3 blade surface piercing prop. Currently my boat does approx 75 mph, (23" prop) trim & jacking plate set for top speed. Most of the race boats do about 100 mph towing 2 skiers on 200' ropes. Just type in Labsport 1700 on UA-cam to see them racing, & yes I'm in Australia & Labsport is an Australian hull. Hope that helps
I was going to block the upper holes to make sure it doesn't suck air....
@@ADDvanced unless the leg on the 150 black max has holes below the torpedo, which I doubt, then you are limited by those upper holes, unless you change the leg to give you the lower water pick up
Do not block off any of the holes on the std leg.
It’s common practice to block the top 3 holes on the fat gearcases. Guys have been doing it for decades. It’ll be fine Rob.
@@ianbond3982 I won't run it that high but if you block the upper ones I read it won't suck air and keep pulling water in. Thanks for all the info, very much appreciated! Cheers!
@@ianbond3982 **chopper is not only a specific propeller Mercury makes, but it has been a general slang term for round ear propellers that some people use for any propeller that has blades that are rounded. Cleavers look like a cleaver knife, and then there are hybrids, such as the lightning ET, and the Yamaha Drag propeller and so on..
That is a beautiful boat for $500!!
A fixer upper is something I'm after too with a bad transom and floor like your other Sleekcraft because I'm great with fiberglass work. I'm in WI as well but in Sheboygan.
I'm trying to find a mid to late Laser LTV in any condition which was my first speedboat I got to drive at my buddies cottage when I was around 12 or 14 years old. I don't even care if it doesn't have an outboard.
Sadly someone stole the boat and the 225hp Mercury. Sadly the boat was recovered but the motor was never found ;(
Texas sized 10-4! Join the UMPBA and ask around, I see cool things laying around on a quasi regular basis. Not sure about finding an LTV specifically tho, but I'll keep my eyes peeled. Cheers!
Funny cause I have been trying to pull the money together to get either a Laser 380 Ray or an LTV for a while now -- I actually have a Laser 380 lined up in what looks like pretty good condition, but I'm sure there's some wet wood at the least. But I just have wanted one since I went for a drive in a 380 copy(StarCraft Eagle believe it or not!) That did an easy 80mph with a modded gt150 OMC on the back of it! Handled the rough stuff on our lake with ease, and handled great too! God willing I can pull it together and either get this one or another one really soon!!
Ditch the windshield. You want smooth air over your face not tubulant because vision.
Ripped it off last night!
This guy it matches your face 😂
The posts at the top front of you engine are there the “idle stabilizer” was mounted. They are junk and get deleted
Is there a way to make them work reliably?
Been there wife told me no more bikes.
Ouch, sorry about the road bike crash. Glad you're feeling better. Great boat, excellent find. One can never have enough sweet looking old school boats from S. CA, my LaveyCraft has no windshield, I like it, less obstruction... Just have to layer up in the spring and fall
She's tough! Yeah, I think that half windshield is just getting torn off. Maybe I'll make something at some point, but I think the goal is to just simplify it, fix some of the rough spots, and see if I can find a better interior.
Just recently found your channel and i just wanted to say i love your vids, you have earned a subscriber!!!
Thanks buddy! My channel hops around a lot; boating season ends in September here, so I'll be transitioning to snowmobiles. Or cars. Or buses. Or land.
Low oil tank level beep. Not an issue if your premixing
I found out what it was.... and it wasn't oil related 🔥
Yamaha 150hp 4 stroke outboard engine price
hard no!
Hey man, big fan of the channel! Pretty awesome you guys got the ceebee, I’ve got a 72 that I finally got back on the water last summer after sitting since 89. I just picked up a Black Max 150 for it and had a question about your fuel tank. How many Gallons is it? Just wondering as far as the weight of the motor and a full tank. I’ve got a 12 gallon tank right now and already sitting low with an 85 evinrude 115. Also does yours have the external trim pump?
Lol mercury head 😂
The beeping sound , is low oil possibly obviously it’s oiling with the smoke it showed ! Under the cowl I’d another tank that stays full from the lower large tank . The engine has a line that pushes low pressure air to the large and fills the upper engine tank . If the gaskets are old it will not fill! So fill upper tank before testing!!
It has a float switch in the upper tank that turns on the beeper for low oil . You still have enough to get back that way. Mine had a air leak at the big tank cap, I used a product the use on swimming pool pipes. It doesn’t dry ! Sticky lube it cured my problem. 👍
You used it to stop the leak?
@@ADDvanced the cap on the big tank was not holding air pressure , dry gasket, so the sealant worked great ! The top tank attached to the motor cap was cracked and pushed oil all over everything!! So new cap was purchased has sender built in. Gasket that came with it leaked ! Oil everywhere again 😡 built my own gasket with thick material and works perfectly. My motor is a 1989 Mariner 150 Magnum look the same and is a Mercury. That pool lube is used to seal plastic pipe on heaters and filters it’s like a sticky grease! Good luck! All be watching👍
It looks just like my 135 Black Max my boat is a 18 ft Sea Ray 1994 I'm guessing but don't know really
The posts are for the automatic oiler bottle that bolts up to those posts
Thanks, makes sense!
@@ADDvanced if you need the fly wheel socket to remove them I have one that I will give to you I have no use for it any more and would be more then happy to gift it to you the fly wheels are pressed on and off its yours if you want it no big deal it will work on both of your out boards plus it's comes with the engine eye bolt that's screws in the top of the fly wheel socket to lift the entire engine on and off the boat and be suspended in air for extreme easy access to every inch of the engine to work on.
My checkmate has that same front design just different shape "as their own" cool to know that everyone was doing that back in the day.
It was to hide all the copying :)
@@ADDvanced I figured but either way I think it looks sweet on any boat.
@@ADDvanced One other thing, if you ever decide to make a trip back to Madison for a lake day shoot me a message and I'll take the checkmate out and maybe meet up? Cheers.
i have one the same
I stand by my statement. Avenger, Baker, Stroker all had air entrapment hulls. As a matter of fact, Avenger, and Baker were identical to the Sleekcraft. I bet Nescher copied Avenger and Baker. Avenger was all hand laid with full stringers and 13/4" transoms. Bob Brown built the Avenger's in Lynwood California and retired a few years ago when the boating industry was suffering through an economic slow down in the late 90"s. I believe Mr. Brown was the tech. advisor for many boating magazines. His boats were outstanding.
The valley in the deck was to add strength to the deck, it was unique only to the Avenger ski boats. The Bubbledeck were first seen in the Sanger flatbotton race boats. The design was copied by almost all of the performance boat builders on the west coast in the 70's and 80's. Now it is almost impossible to buy a new boat under 30 feet on the west coast. If you take your time on your Avenger you will have a real prize on your hands. I think a you will be surprised what you will be able to sell it for.
Some of sleekcrafts earlier, smaller designs might have been copies, I'm not sure, there was so much happening but I could ask Debbie Nescher about it. I don't know if she'd remember the super early days tho, I don't think she was around yet lol. That said, I don't think the Aristocrat/SST hulls were copies of anything; the curves are a lot different than other boats, it was even patented.
I had a 19ft avenger I bought up in California (like 11 hour drive from Phoenix!), Paid only like $1200 with an xr2(2.0 liter!) 150hp Merc, boat trailer and motor all in superb condition!! Guy was pissed his radio got stolen out of it so sold cheap!
Anyway, sold the outboard, installed, for I think $2500, and then put a 225hp 3.0 liter V6 Merc outboard motor and a 6in Jack plate on it.
It ran 84/85mph on the rev limiter with just me and less than a half tank of gas!! Handled amazing, drove and did everything really well!!
@@ADDvanced **checking a transom with an outboard motor bolted to it simply needs the engine trimmed down a bit, but where the outboard is still trimmed out/up a ways from neutral trim. And stand on the cavitation plate and jump on the cavitation plate and look for any movement. That will tell you if it is still solid, it is possible that it could be wet, but at least it'll show you if it's solid and will give you a few years service!!
I have 2 of these “avengers” one is a 1973 16 foot. The other is the 18 foot bubble deck, 155hp evinrude commercial looper motor. Absolute blast to drive. Not crazy fast, 70 is tops I’ve had it. But rides very nice for what it is… definitely gets some looks .
I haven't even measured this yet, think it's a 16 or 18? I was told 16. Also, I can't find brochures anywhere, can you? Would be interesting to read more about these things but there's basically nothing online.
No I can’t find any literature on them either. Recently ripped my 18 apart and had to install a new floor. Thinking about a repower but not sure yet
I just got a 1991 blackmax 175 on a 20ft fish n ski for $1800 last august
Did you get this Mercury V6 over heat figured out? It sounds like you have compression leaking into the cooling jackets. could be a crack cylinder. I can tell you how to isolate the problem. I'll check back, if you respond I'll talk to you.
I would run a 28 to a 30 pitch prop to start with!!!
Yep, 3 Blade Chopper for power, 3 Blade Cleaver for speed. The Chopper will give you more nose lift (if you need it).
Low oil horn
Looks just like my 1985 xr2 150
Broke down the serial and it's either an 86 or 87
No way you got a good engine I wish I had that boat and engine
Total steal! Stay tuned for updates tomorrow!
Ok here is some info on your questions on your 2.4 the number on the Welch plug is the serial number you can check that to a serial number to year chart for the year. The post on the front are for the oil tank when oil injected. Prop start with what the old owner ran a 26 chopper. Remember a little rich on the carbs is not bad plugs are cheaper than pistons.
Let’s geter done want to see it fly!!!!!
Mastertech marine has a serial number to year chart.
Ok The serial number indicates it is a 1987 175 block
Other people are saying it's a 200, and that's why I'm confused. I used this website: maxrules.com/models/Merc_model_files/175-300.html but the serial range is the same for the 175 and the 200, so I'm not sure what to check to see the difference? Or was it just stickers? lol.
@@ADDvanced I bet it is 200. I did it back then. Changed cowl to 150 black max. I had 200. That is 1985 cowl. Back then the boat cops were picky on over powered boats in the water.
cant seem to reply so Ill reply here. Didnt have a speedo and no GPS back then but I've had a lot of boats and my guess would be about 70 with good water and just the right trim. A friend had a Ebko Stinger Tunnel boat with the same engine and I could just ease away from him a mile or 2 per hour. His boat was heavier and that tunnel is a faster hull. Good times. Had a few jet boats too and what a waste of good horsepower, especially back then. I wanted to glass one in for an outdrive but never did. Thats a really good buy for 500.
Alarm is your oil injection pump gear sticking. The crank gear is going to grind away and tear up your motor. The problem was the pump not the gear on the crank. Delete or just replace the pump for a new one.
Listen pay attention the horn beeping it's a broken beeping indicates oil issue, cap, module, coil, pac but it is using oil that motor can put out 170hp it's not a regular 150
Love the sound on those mercs my buddy has 200horse 2.5 that flies
I would also recommend changing the Reed valves as they are stainless steel and if one breaks off it will cause major damage, replace them with composite Reed valves.
I just got some from Chris Carson Marine. Still need to install them, but I've heard great things.
@@ATStone I got some from Chris Carson and was very pleased with mine and I'm sure you will be as well .👍

The post on the top is for setting the timing as there is a bolt on tool that goes on there to set the timing.
I bought a 1981 Lund Tyee 4.9 fishing boat with a running 90hp outboard with trailer...for $250. them deals are out there. I've used it enough to pay for itself this summer.
True! But fishing boats are so common, it's a lot easier to find deals on them. Most performance boat guys want way more than they are worth because even a rotted out hulk still looks awesome. There will be crazy sales this fall, but I'm NOT GETTING ANY MORE BOATS. I think.
I thought for sure this was longer than 16 foot boat. With a 150 black max, that thing should do 70 plus. Especially with a jack plate. We had a 1984 Glastron Carlson CVX 16 with a 115 Evinrude. We mounted it off the transom 2 notches. Typical double cup teflon coated stainless SST propeller 21 pitch. She’d do a couple ticks over 60. Just sayin.
Keep watching the series. I pulled about 300lbs of water logged foam out from under the floor
It's a 1984 XR2 with 155 hp at 5800 rpm They are bullet proof and go like hell .She will never get damaged in this rig ,Keep her off the bikes ,that was awful! 1984 was the only year where Mercury Mixed decal color . Every 1984 model had a brown decal EXCEPT the 150 XR2 witch was silver , white and red .P.S . That extra 5 hp seemed like 25 hp . I was passing 175 mercs with mine in similar boats. Good luck with it Chip
I broke down the serial and it's an 86 or 87 XR2, not an 85. Not sure what the differences are tho. Still soaking up knowledge.
Yeah, boating, even performance boating, is definitely one of the safer activities to do, but you don't get the exercise of a bike. Love how fast 30-40mph feels on a decent road bike; it feels more like 80 :D
What boat did you have yours on?
@@ADDvanced The XR2 was only made 1 year and that was 1985 So that means something has been changed on your motor Either the cover or the Serial no# is wrong.
@@arthurtaddei1285 That is not true, man. Scroll down to 150hp, 1986/87 area. maxrules.com/models/Merc_model_files/115-150.php
@@ADDvanced Its wrong . I have been a merc dealer for 45 yrs. Think what you want I'm done with you

Love LOVE the VW Audi Porsche stuff!! I actually rebuilt a 911 Turbo motor in my old Marine repair shop I owned..
*If you want or need anything V6 Merc related, parts or info etc etc, feel free to let me know! I specialized in the V6 Merc and Mariner outboard motors for well over 20yrs now! From stock to drag motor porting and beyond, I've done it all!!
Well that makes like 5 of you! Idk why but my 911 videos do terrible on yotuube. I will let you know! I'm learning a lot but there's not a really good one stop shop of information on these engines.
those posts are for small oil tank
Thanks!
As someone already commented, the 150 XR2 was the 2.0 Liter hot rod Merc that was targeted for the Bass fishing competitions. Apparently, the competitions accepted motors with up to 10% over the stated HP and hence the hopped up version. I had an XR2 on my 17' Glastron CVX and saw about 60 MPH. As for prop advice for your SST, I'm running a 24P Trophy, four blade on my 20.2 Lavey Craft Sebring (similar mod-VP hull), Merc 200XS with a sporty lower (1:87). The Trophy is a good all around prop and you may be able to get away with more pitch....
Thanks man! Yeah, I'm having difficulty finding the difference between a normal 150 black max and an XR2, I read the 10% over HP, but I'm not finding any hard information on what is causing that 10% bump?
@@ADDvanced wrote above is correct. Assuming original block and accessories.
Depending on pad on back of SST, suggest you try Merc chopper. Or Spinelli. If you want to shell out the cash. They will custom design for your app.
@@johnross6314 My desires exceed my bank account
@@ADDvanced I will check my stash of props for what is used to have… Mercury Racing 2.5 280 w/ sport master lower. Now that I am running V8 300R, they do not fit the shaft. I am assuming the XR2 lower you have has the same shaft diameter as my 2.5 had? I sold many of them on Scream and Fly… the 26” Spinelli is gone for sure. However, might still have a 28” perfect condition chopper. I bet you could carry that prop. Excellent all around cruise RPM, hole shot, and on plane will not blow out ever (with sport master never ventilated in the hardest turns at speed). Especially IF the gear case is 1.75-2.0 to one gears. Which, I believe XR2s had (?).. If I do still have something, would let it go for decent price.
Man this is a super cool little boat. 500 bucks = SCORE !!!! I know very little about boats and I would have bought it for 500. Im kinda jelly. That Porsch is sick
Agreed buddy! Thanks for the kind words! 911 build was the most intimidating project I've tackled. Baby steps!
Another similarity would be like the Miller boats paint job.
Miller?

You alright brother !!
Cheers dude!
Did you guys ever solve the over heating Problem Thanks
It may have an auxiliary oil tank under the cowl that the level sensor is bad in causing the beep. Generally 4 blade props are for better hole shot and handling which with a 150, a 16 foot boat shouldn't have trouble getting on plane. Experimenting with pitch/diameter and going to a 3 blade, that boat should easily get into the mid to high 70's I would think. Growing up I rode in an Avenger jet boat with a big block Ford and I know a guy currently that has probably a 19' with a 200 Merc that is just sitting here in Maine. Definitely cool boats and fast!
Very cool, and apparently really rare. There is almost no information on them online, anywhere. I haven't heard the beeping IRL yet, so I'll keep my eye on that sensor, thanks!
Put a 0 or 1 in front of the number stamped on Welch plug, should be the serial number
Ok you are right I did find the serial number in both 175 and 200 the difference my be in the setting’s timing carbs and ignition components I think the block and internals are the same. Also the gear case may have different ratios.
Keep the videos coming!
Will do! Hoping to put the avenger in this weekend to do baseline runs... parts should be here Friday.
I’m restoring a 1971 ceebee avenger 17ft outboard with an 81 mercury 135. They are sweet boats with a pretty fast hull. Those bollards on the back are for a center mounted ski pole.
Nice! What color? Transom/floor and stringer in good shape or full tear down? What do you mean by "bollards?" There's a chrome stern light receptacle and the fuel fill near the splashwell.
That motor sounded badass. You may want to change the water pumps in thermostats and see how it flows
Looks like my xr2 94 95..mine was overheating when it was beeping like that and I had to replace water pump but could also be the VRO not working..mine does 55 56 mph on a 19.5 ft skeeter bass boat...
What's VRO? 50+ is always pretty good imho.
had a Red blue and silver metal flake one of these brand new in about 81. Had the inline 6 150 merc. Hand on the throttle all the time when you're trimmed and to the metal. It was rated for a 135.
This one says 150, so maybe it's an 18'? I honestly haven't measured it yet. What speeds did you get?
That is an early 80's V6
Broke down the serial to 86 or 87 XR2
What ever become of the blue project boat you were working on last year? You left off finishing the transom.
That's the SST project I mention in the video, and go over the 2.4 200 for it at the end of this episode.
Wow. First, hope Sara is feeling better - head trauma is no fun. Second, the spontaneous purchase is toooo familiar - congrats. Love the enthusiasm despite the 'surprises'!
Glad her head is fairly durable! Thanks, we're pretty excited about this thing. Not sure what the long term plans are with it yet, but it's been a blast so far! Cheers Bertrand!
@@ADDvanced and BTW congrats on getting the 911 engine back in - will be great to see how it runs! Still tuning mine but took it off the road to add a front oil cooler and replace the crank and intermediate seal which I should’ve done like you when pulled the engine in the first place.
@@bcli7472 Trombone or finned carrera style?
@@ADDvanced finned - but because I have an RUF type front bumper, there is a screened opening where the cooler can go so no need for a fan. My 77 car didn’t come with the trombone cooler or installation would’ve been WAYyyy easier (I do things right ‘cause I do it three times 😀).
@@bcli7472 Nice! Yeah, I don't know if it's original but my targa has the trombone; my oil temps have always been pretty good so no plans on upgrading anytime soon.

1986 or 87 I have the same engine
2 stroke smoke should come in perfume form
I swear I think Stihl makes candles.
Or a 2 stroke vape flavor.😀
Great find, if that is a true unspoiled XR2, you have hit a jackpot worth possibility $8,000+ to the right person. Take care of it, don't mess around consult an expert.
You might have this confused with the euro only race motor XR2, which made 200hp. That thing is an animal, this is more of a bass boat style engine.
Looks like a 1985 finger port engine and if it is it will run great!!
From the Allison Guy!
Serial breaks down to an 86 or 87 XR2
How many gallons and hour does the 150 burn ?
Xr2 is a 2.0l
Thanks for the info! New update tomorrow!
The boat should be fast in the 80`s
Smoke keeps the squitos away!
Dude I like that boat would love to have it
Its really don't mix
Sorry Sara, I hope your feeling ok. If i could have found a motor to replace the twin 1960 40 HP Johnsons that were on my 18ft Robalo I bought for $800 bucks I would probably still have the boat. Did get those motors running and could get about 40mph out of it but talk about using fuel. Those motors could swallow more fuel than anything else I have ever seen. That 150 sounds great!
I'm sure the 150 is going to be thirsty AF, even the old towers of powers chewed right through gas, and this has even more displacement. Honestly the v8 in Dangerzone seems fairly efficient, for what it is, but i'm not at WOT for extended periods.
Danger zone is sweet period!!!
Omg did you just buy this boat in Onalaska?! I almost bought it this spring for quite a bit more than the 500. I wish I would have known he would have come down. Super happy you got it and I can live in it through video! Awesome
No but the guy I bought it from did. Might be for sale once I dial it in.
@@ADDvanced that is awesome you have it. Once it's dialed in and minor details it should fetch $5000
I had a 1976 Cee Bee Avenger 183 with a 150 Merc. for 13 years. I would bet the boat you have is also a 183, which means it is 18 feet long. The boat had a max. horse power rating of 155. I bought the boat new for $5000.00. It was a great boat. It was a 65 mph boat, and it had a flat wake for skiing. Avenger boats were head and shoulders superior to Sleekcraft boats and that was proven in the number of races it won in circle jet competition. If I was not 78 years old and "over the hill", I would give you $1000.00 for the boat. The transom was 1 3/4 " thick, it was
"head and shoulders superior to sleekcraft"? Hard no. Sleek had air entrapment hulls, and the lines/styling is head and shoulders above all the hallet/stoker/tiki/etc bubble decks. That puts them in a league of their own, imho, but I am biased, haha. What happened to the boat? I'll check the length of mine next episode.
@@ADDvancedRob, I sold the boat in 1989 for $5000.00. We never had the boat in salt water, took it to Lake Powell 26 times in 13 years. I skied 50 miles, non-stop from Wahweep Marina to Rainbow Bridge in 1 hour and 15 minutes with 6 people in the boat with an inline 6 150hp Merq.. We had to fuel boat to make return run to Wahweep, filled up with almost 20 gal. of fuel. We were running on fumes. That Avenger has a special place in my heart. I wish I lived close to you because I would love to help you restore your boat.
Awesome find!
Regarding marine engines, are there any sources for factory technical manuals?
Gotta get good at the google-fu. Also check scream and fly forums, or FB groups. Someone will probably have a PDF you need.
Run a Trophy 4 blade 28 to 30 pitch!
Wayy too much pitch for the little 2.0 liter V6 Merc.. even on the small'ish hull.. a round ear prop, 24" to 26" pitch is a can't go wrong propeller to start with!
Check out Fab Rats latest project. They found an 80s jet boat on the dry Lake Mead lake bed.
Must be nice to live somewhere where rad boats are so common you can just find them in the bottom of lakes
That avenger is rad
