  • Hello my name is Cliff and I'm a gem cutter from Australia. In this video I take a fun approach to faceting gems. You will see me facet my own design called "The Zulu's Eye" in flame fusion Ruby. Jaw's also makes a guest appearance in this video and takes full control of filming, editing and sound at the "Vintage Time Studios". Please leave comments, like and subscribe. Thank you for watching.

    Who's here after nighthawksinthelight's video on how to make synthetic rubys?

  • @zacchambers2418
    @zacchambers2418 4 роки тому +60

    I don't get the stigma that makes synthetic gem jewelry undesirable. This is a beautiful piece of work! I would pay just as much for this regardless of it was synthetic or from the earth.

    • @gabrielgrimes8297
      @gabrielgrimes8297 3 роки тому +17

      It's all just aluminium oxide and chromium at the end of the day so there shouldn't even be a price difference.

      @@gabrielgrimes8297 people want what they want and they want natural gems

    • @Tunkkis
      @Tunkkis 2 роки тому +8

      @@gabrielgrimes8297 The price difference comes from differences in supply and demand.
      Due to the relative ease of manufacture synthetic gems are high in supply, but because their demand is low they're very inexpensive.
      Natural stones on the other hand are very sought after, but also very limited in supply, driving up the price. Not to mention all the work that goes into finding and getting the stones from the ground to us.

    • @iguanian
      @iguanian 2 роки тому +6

      That's because it isn't *synthetic*. It is actual ruby, just man made. Synthetic would be if you used glass, plastic, or something else that wasn't ruby. Many jewelers started using the term synthetic to make natural ruby seem better somehow, even if man made ruby is often better in almost every way. It does drive up prices almost as much as what the diamond industry does though.
      The only argument would be that a "natural" ruby was formed in the earth, but where exactly do you think the base materials of aluminum oxide and chromium come from?

    • @Tunkkis
      @Tunkkis 2 роки тому +8

      @@iguanian That's not what synthetic means. Synthetic means that something is created "artificially", it is synonymous with "man-made".
      The word for colored glass or anything else other than ruby being sold as ruby is "imitation" or "fake".
      Here is a quote from GIA, the Gemological Institute of America: "Contrary to what many people may think, the word “synthetic” does not mean fake when it comes to gemstones. The term actually comes from the Greek word for “to put together.” People “build” or, more accurately, “grow” synthetic crystals. They do this by using chemicals that, given the proper environment, arrange themselves into crystals of essentially the same structure as crystals that grow without human intervention.
      A synthetic gem is a man-made material with essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and optical and physical properties as the natural gem material."

    As a goldsmith it always astounds me the amount of work people put into hand-cutting gems still. It isn't something as easily realized when working with the gems you're using. Well done on this beauty!

    The design is top shelf Cliff, and the final reveal confirms that. I do enjoy the back ground 'history' that adds to the mystery and allure of the gem, and once again Jaws has out done even himself. I'm shocked that Hollywood hasn't been 'dogging' him to come to California to direct and produce for the major studios! Thanks for another terrific Vintage Time video!

      Thanks GS....I think the design really is good. I had fun have a theme to the video to add some interest to it. Jaws is interested in one thing and that's FOOD. Maybe Hollywood can pay him in a lifetime sugary treats which seems his addiction these days. Regards Cliff

      Jaws seems quite vicious. Definitely an appropriate name for someone like him with a rather checkered past however this people were only people and he was hungry. Well like any good Australian his hot blood which is quite criminal. If you doubt this you can easily follow the actual trail of blood crumbs aka bloodline he left all the way from start to finish on his pilgrimage long ago to Australia. This is not his life anymore and he is know for his films as well as some really ripping still photography especially of gems. Truly one of a kind Jaws is. Also quite kinda for taking in the stray whom howls throughout the film whilst rubbing his girl dull on some sort of sand wheel. Didn’t make much sense seeing as there was no girl and I don’t understand him. Jaws did great as always.

    It was the video thread on making synthetic rubies that led me to this video. It looks like a fantastic process, even before the end "reveal".

    What's the difference between the synthetic ruby and a natural one? Why aren't the synthetic ones good enough to take over from the natural ones?
