  • Steve Moriarty outlines the detailed process of cutting the pavilion of a rare large Morganite. He starts with the gem properly secured in an UltraTec V5 faceting machine, which he recommends for its precision. Initially considering a shield cut for optimal yield from the gem's triangular shape, Moriarty opts for a more aesthetically pleasing trilliant cut, eventually choosing a Portuguese style after evaluating various designs. The cutting begins with a master lap and a 360-grit topper, focusing on the girdle's precise angles for the desired shape. Through a meticulous sequence of cutting and adjusting angles, Steve aims to maintain sharp corners and an even girdle, despite anticipating a significant loss of material. The process involves strategic cutting to ensure all facets align correctly, leading to a final pre-polishing phase for the perfect finish. This video shows the complexity and skill required in gem faceting, particularly for high-value, large carat stones like this particular morganite.

I don’t know why but, this brings me back to complex Lego projects as a child where you build according to the plan but half the time you don’t know what you’re building until the final page.
Thank you for showing all of us what cutting gems is all about. 💎

Yes often the plan changes midstream but this time all went to plan and the finish was better than i had anticipated.

This is so suspenseful. Seeing how much the morganite has shrunk. I’m holding my breath hoping that this design works out and your decision to go with this trillion cut instead of a shield pays off.

I just had no idea before today that lapidaries use a machine similar to the one I’ve seen used to cut glass for stained glass work. And I had no idea that you could program a machine with angles and such to hold the rough piece toward the lap like that. It is so fascinating to watch.

That is funny Steve "I'm not totally sure what is going to happen" on my very expensive stone.

Beutiful stone and very nice work. Can I question? What is a liguit in the glass when you need to peel off stone? Thank for advice. Sarka gemcuter from Czech Repuplic.

The lamp 🪔 is denatured alcohol - the glass we soaked the gem was Attack epoxy solvent

Is this the most valuable stone you have ever cut? Is this the most value you have had to let go down the drain?
