As mentioned above - this is a straight soundboard mix. Jerry's guitars were likely so loud on stage that they didn't need to be in the PA very much. If you were in the audience, you probably got plenty of guitar - it's just an artifact of the way this was recorded that it's so low. (Bass does sound great, though.)

AIC I would think is more like the Sabbath of the 90's only because they had the dark side to them. Zep was love like Pearl jam both had a soft side to them.

I was at the Dallas show of this tour and was blown away. Bought the album (which came with a t-shirt and a VHS tape) on my way out. Been hooked ever since. Also, Layne kicked me in the face years later at a Queensryche show. A guy behind me kept flipping Layne off during their set. About 15 minutes into their set, Layne jumped off the stage and attacked the guy. I got a combat boot to the face in the process. Good memories.

Dear everyone who is about to comment about the lack of guitar in the mix: READ THIS FIRST.
This audio is coming straight off of the board. It is the audio which is coming through the front-of-house main PA speakers. As most people who have stage experience will know, rock and metal stages are loud. The sound heard by the crowd is stage noise + PA noise. A lot of times with local bands with basic gear, the drums will be very loud, while the vocals will be the quietest. In this video, however, Jerry Cantrell is using a 100W Marshall Amp, which literally drowns out everything and everyone else. If you stood on stage and turned off all the stage monitors, you would basically hear nothing but guitar.
Since the guitar is so loud, if not for the PA system, this would be Jerry Cantrell ft. A Group of Mimes. In order to compensate for this, the vocals, drums, and bass are cranked by the man working the soundboard. The stage carries the guitar while the PA system carries the rest of the band. Since we only have the audio going through the PA system, we get very little guitar, but if the sound guy had mixed it so it sounded good in this video then the result would have been a very crappy mix for the people in attendance.

They should have went in and screwed around with the sounds and done some kind of remastering or something with it. I'm a guitar player so we know what it sounds like to drown everybody else out... We can't help it. To our own ears we sound better extremely loud.

Gotta put some guitar in those giant P.A. speakers and mix it like a pro. Turn the stage bass down if there's a problem. Make it rock. Those Marshalls could be dummies. Easier to tour with. Just one real one. Use your gear. There could be people in the back saying. "What that fuck is this"? You're micing up for the first 3 rows of people.

This is such a good lesson to pass on to your kids about why you should never trust a crowd unfamiliar with your work / art / story to tell you whether you should give up or not.
These guys listened to enough music to know this was part of the growing pains and the process. This is the part where most give up. They knew they had all the ingredients to be stars.
The lesson isn’t just for musicians, it can be applied to almost anything....except boxing or MMA 🥊 😂
It takes about 3 touch points with someone for them to give you a fair shot, known in the scientific world as the “exposure effect”.
It’s human nature to hate the unknown. It’s built in our DNA to always scan for threats first and anything outside of our “tribe” could’ve meant death in those days ie. a wild animal, someone from another tribe, unfamiliar sounds 💀.
If you actually do suck, wait until you have at least have a sample size first lol
It’s not like AIC sucked at this point and then just improved either. The “opening band” label starts them as low-value too, so people only hear what their bias expects.
Weird how similar this principle works with advertising / cold calling too.
Added this to the archives 👌🏽 thank you for posting! A rare gem 💎

So I watched 310 over and over and all I saw was a guard watching then turning around he didn't seem enthusiastic or like he gave a shit. I think your seeing things. Again 3:10 1 guard watching not moving or shaking his head along to the song then turns back around. Didn't look like he really gave a shit. Did anyone see anything different. Did he bang his head a couple of times or move like he was grooving along to the song? Did I miss him looking like he was into it? I'm pretty sure at least at the time of 3:10 and pretty much the whole video non of the guards looked like they were in to it. So what he turned to watch he also turned back around and continued to face foward does that mean he's really in to the crowd too?

@@theophany1770 what is everyone seeing I watched 3:10 over and over all I saw was a guard turn stand still no moving his body or head watch for a minute then turn back around. What was there to catch he didn't seem enthusiastic at all to me. So what? He also turned around and faced the crowd for the rest of the time that to me is not the body language of someone that was in to or excited to see the band playing if he really was we would have seen some head movement or body movement along with the beat watching a band that you have to stand in front of for 5 seconds doesn't mean he likes the band at all!!!??? It's just a weird thing to first of all point out when nothing was really wasn't happening and second to make an assumption about someone that didn't look too enthusiastic at all wouldn't he have at least kept watching or turned around again if he liked it SO much? You guys need better reading body language skills because that body language didn't say "he knows what he's witnessing" is great it's just a guard that felt like watching for a few seconds. Good God of all things to comment about a bored guard that turned towards the stage for seconds then turned back around. NOT Laynes amazing voice or what the crowd doesn't know their witnessing or Mikes awesome bass playing Sean's awesome drums that Jerry is kick ass but his amp needs to be turned up NO not any of that but instead a guard that watched for a few seconds???!!! Whatever. Was it at 3:10? Maybe that was the wrong time because again I watched over and over and didn't see anyone that looked like they were enjoying or enthusiastic about what they were seeing. Which is a shame they had no idea what they were witnessing.

i came back from Desert Storm/ Iraq in May 1991, this was my first concert back, in my hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that summer. I was a huge HUGE fan of Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. Had seem them all previous times. The opening band AIC, was new to me. Man in the Box may have been getting some airplay on Headbangers Ball. Watching this, it was exactly like this, half empty, waiting for the big bands. I dug them. I was on the floor up front. After their set, i made my way by the backstage gate. All of the member were their talking to some young fans. I still remember to this day, this teen girl showing them her arm full of cigarette burns, and they said, oh thats not cool. I remember looking at them ..and thinking FUCK! they are young. Was same age as me. Looking at Jerry here, he is so young! Great times, and a great band....these people just didnt know it yet!

Great footage! I would have been going crazy in the front row of I were there. I loved the skateboard Layne look. The dreads/beads in his hair. His style, though. ❤️🎶🤘
    Wow.

This crowd makes me so mad. AIC is by far the best band that was here.

Megadeth is pretty great, but Alice In Chains is up there. Definitely better than Slayer and Anthrax.
