On September 19, 1953, NASCAR scheduled a high-profile race for Modified/Sportsman cars at the Raleigh Speedway. The event paid more money to win than almost all other races and attracted the best drivers. More significantly, the event was the first night race ever held on a track over one mile. With expectations this would be a great moment in NASCAR's brief history, no one could've predicted how terrible the night would become on lap one.
Bill Blevins stalled on the pace lap and went unnoticed by officials. The green flag was thrown and a field of 59 cars went racing toward him at full speed. On the backstretch, Blevins was struck by Jesse Midkiff and 15 cars were involved in the fiery crash. Both Blevins and Midkiff died in NASCAR's only double fatality. It was a stain that the modern but unpopular track couldn't erase.
While Raleigh Speedway was torn down over 50 years ago, ironically the section of track where the accident occured still exists, hidden in the woods on a Raleigh side street.

Either it's a coincidence, or something darker is going on.
My Dad volunteered at the Raleigh Speedway and was responsible for setting up the sound system. This allowed us to watch this race from the announcer’s booth high above the track.
Sadly I can still see the horrific crash on the backstretch at the start. It seemed to me that the entire backstretch was on fire. It was years before I attended another NASCAR race.
You know what's especially sad? I bet the people who work next to that last remaining track section have no idea it's even there, or if they do they probably have no idea what it used to be.
Or the fact a fair amount of people died there. I can imagine the ghostly noises of the cars going through that wooded area at night. Those pictures are that haunting.

Stock car racing is a Charlotte phenomena. Raleigh has always treated Charlotte like a separate state, and this state is still full of provincial legislators who can't see past their personal interests.

It's that new rule.....Since Tony Stewart ran over and killed Ward Jr. Driver must stay in the car. Blevins anticipated the future rule. Blevins ahead of his time. Following rule back then.

But, everybody who has the benefit of hindsight claims they woulda, coulda, shoulda done something different. But, I am betting that is the defense Nascsr used to show they were not to blame in Blevins death.

1 and a half years later I'm seeing this. I actually work on Tarheel Dr in Raleigh and have walked the area where the track still stands. I actually have a chunk of the track at home. Great video.

I grew up in Raleigh. Never knew about this, and after some research and piecing together the location of the track, turns out it was only about a quarter mile from my grandfathers house...and I used to ride my bike through that area as a kid...wow! Thanks for the history lesson. Awesome!!

This is not the fairgrounds speedway. There’s two different former tracks in Raleigh.
The fairgrounds speedway was a half mile dirt track (the final dirt track to hold a grand national race.) Raleigh Speedway was a one mile paved oval.
Probably because NASCAR tried hard to hide all the shit its responsible for.
Maybe another case of hidden and unknown tragedy.
A lot of sports disasters in the 50s just faded into history as no one wanted to revisit them, and often they were poorly documented. They'd often make only local news and then fading into long forgotten microfisc archives until someone digs back to uncover it.
History forgets a great number of things even in this digitalized world we live in now.

I shared 3 links to 1-70 speedway outside Kansas City that many NASCAR stars of today use to race at. NASCAR Truck series use to race there too. The 1st link shows 3 huge inferno crashes. I-70 was dangerous. Greg Weld (Weld Wheels) owned it. I worked there as a pit steward (posting line-ups) when I was in college . There was a driver named Freddie Whistler who was better than Martin, Johnson, Trickle, McMurry, Petty, etc.

1. I do have a sense of humor. If you've ever read most of my comments on other videos, I am very quick to tell others that they've missed a joke. If you're comment was meant to be a joke, then it was a very poor time to choose that specific joke. I write a comment complimenting the creater of the video, and the joke you make is about my username. Since my username and commending someone's UA-cam video have basically no correlation, it comes off more as you just being an ass rather than making a joke. Imagine if you were talking about your favorite race in NASCAR history, and I just randomly said, "Geez, I didn't know it was Halloween already. I like your nerd costume" I bet you'd be a bit put off by that, wouldn't you? Now, if you were telling me, "When god made that face of yours, he probably was having issues with the production line," and I replied with what I said before, we could both laugh at eachother as well as ourselves.

That statement about how some racetracks give positive memories and others leave only tragedy and failure, it's perfectly true. An example of how F1 has got it right is COTA. By blending aspects of racetracks that made for great racing, taking inspiration from other tracks, and encouraging the general package, COTA in 2021 saw over 300,000 people attending the race. An example where they got it wrong is Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada. A track built in parking lot of the famous casino, it was a completely unsuitable track for F1, shaped like a E and not sold to the locals, so hardly anyone attended.
The worst thing F1 ever did, from selling itself to the United States perspective, was tyregate, the intransigence of F1 teams whereby a technical problem with Michelin tyre company blew up into a political row. It was like the inaugural race at Talladega in 1969, only it was in front of not just the US audience, it was global

Hate to say this about any city in NC, but I could swear that Raleigh is the only city in the "South" that wishes it never was. It seems like almost everything "Southern" is banned, restricted or hidden in Raleigh for one reason or another. Either afraid to offend, or ashamed to admit they are a Southern City. It just seems odd that NASCAR, the sport born and flourished in the South, would have an effort to "ban it" in the STATE from Raleigh of all places. I mean, just think what they could have had if they had been like Hickory, Wilksboro or Charlotte and simply embraced the sport. A massive legion of fans, a long and respected history, and a life-long commitment by drivers and owners to keep the memories alive.
Raleigh has been almost always had conflicting political views with the rest of the state. Southern industry brought northern money & northern people which has been the case for Raleigh and many other cities in the south.
NC is and has historically been one of the most prosperous and beautiful states in the south making many DY(damn Yankees) attracted to it. That being said when DY start invading they never tend to respect or acknowledge the home culture and attitudes.
DY’s never come and want things to stay the same. They enjoy an attitude similar to a construction project. Destroy/rebuild. They have no use for culture or history, only what is now and profitable. Architectural masterpieces once common in the south are “modernized” and “restructured”. New/now/future is all they want. There is is no history they were not around for.
The South stayed silent in the hopes of more Yankee money. The South continues to be destroyed and remodeled in the name of progress and innovation. 18th/19th/20th century buildings/culture/tradition/food/family/history all have no place for DY.

Take Charleston SC for example, beautiful architecture, food, hub of culture the world around up until the civil war. Still today it remains vibrant and beautiful as ever.
Contrast with somewhere like Richmond VA, once again, major city in the south with deep roots and major trading center until the civil war. Very similar history but northern influences have destroyed the architecture and what made Richmond an ideal spot to live.
Bottom line: The North hate southern people but love our land. They want us out and in the process destroy what they came to find.

There is a s1ap on location: Raleigh speedway
In 1956 the original builder of Raleigh Speedway, Sam Nunis, built a nearly identical track at Trenton, NJ, expandiing and paving what had been a 1/2 mile dirt track. It ran very successfully into the 1970's when it was expanded into a 1 1/2 mile with a dogleg in the back stretch
I've never heard of this sad event .I'm 65 and when I was young you rarely heard of any of this ,.Enjoyable program .

My great uncle was Jessie who died in the crash, I was told a after that my great grandma and her family stopped racing this accident. I Always heard my granny’s brother died in race accident, I hate to find out it was this and it could’ve been avoided.

Lived a mile or so from there in the early 1980's. Friend of mine says the then unused track area was used to fly RC aircraft.

There are a lot of defunct tracks in the South that have history, not all of it good. Back behind those trees are ghosts..... Yellow River is one. East of Atlanta.

Yep.That 24 yr old Blevins was out for that $2000 purse.But his car wasn't up to par.NASCAR should've had him removed from the track after his 1st stall .It probably would've saved 2 lives that day.

The footage 7shown of the beginning of that crash was not actually Raleigh but rather the1951 crash at the national modified open at Langhome, PA

@@alb5489 When Wally hit that car along the fence it looked like the frame of the other car cut the front roof pillars of Campbell's car ,and looked like he was knocked out for a while ,and it was an agonizingly long time for him to get out . I've seen a better quality video of the wreck.

Good afternoon all Nothing to do with accident on the track but my dad grandfather and brother was at a Stock Cars in Dover NJ what happened the stand collapsed let of people was hurt and taking to local hospital after that never open it back up. Knew something was wrong could hear the cops squared going to it
Besides the neighbors of the track not wanting it there was it a good track to race on?
Most if not all tracks were made before the neighbors got their if you don't like the track their move away.
Wondering what happened/who was involved in the 1951 Langhorne crash footage
Wally Campbell was in the white coupe that caught fire 🔥 and he got out after an agonizing few seconds .Some one got a broken leg ,but no serious injuries .

I had to laugh at the logic that a driver was at fault because "several others avoided the accident" and therefore he was negligent for not doing so. Presumably that judge would have blamed Tom Pryce for killing himself and a marshal because Hans-Joachim Stuck avoided the marshal.

The fact that the judge threw out the families lawsuits just shows how crooked and corrupt small town southern towns are.
I don't care what anyone says about the car not being in good enough condition to race... If it was not race ready, then Nascar shouldn't have allowed him to race.
I know this is 70 years ago and death was an accepted part of racing, but damn. If I was one of the family member of either driver, I'd have snuck into that track late at night with a rented excavator and torn up every piece of asphalt, and smashed every building on the site. Then I'd have gotten the fuck out of hillbilly town and changed my name so they couldn't find me.
I'm from FL and have family in the mountains of NC... I got a ticket once for going like 58mph in a 30mph zone of the Blue Ridge Parkway... It's a scenic mountain road that has some of the most beautiful views you'll ever see - very highly recommend it if you're ever in the N Georgia /N Carolina mountain area.
Anyways I got the ticket and just apologized to the cop, it was a local sheriff deputy and he was actually pretty cool about the whole thing. I was driving my grandpa's new Mercedes 500SL and just straight up told the cop that I was having fun and didn't realize I was going that fast... The deputy said something to the effect of "well that fancy car should be able to go more than 58mph!" and I was like yeah, but I also didn't wanna fly off a cliff and die. He just laughed, gave me the ticket, and said "look, I appreciate you being honest with me - you can either pay the fine, or you can go to court. I'm gonna let you know right now that I don't go to court over speeding tickets, so the choice is yours"
Basically he was telling me look, I've gotta write you a ticket bc you were going almost double the speed limit... But if you take the 10 hour drive up here and go to court, you won't have to pay the ticket because I won't be in court to testify that I got you on radar.
I had been making 5-6 trips per year up to NC to see my grandparents so I figured I'd just plan a trip around the court date.
Sure enough, cop wasn't in court that day and my ticket got thrown out... But what I saw in that court room still pisses me off to this day. I watched one person after another go up to the stand, apologize for speeding or running a stop sign etc... The judge would cancel their traffic ticket IF they made a donation to a charity.
A charity of the judges choice.
Some "charity" called the NC Troopers Fund or something like that. I knew instantly what was going on... And I knew my grandpa was good friends with a cop in Boone.... So I asked my gramps to ask the cop about the "charity" and the cop said yeah, that's just a bullshit scheme that county set up and everyone on the police force in the mountains knew it was a sham... The "charity" was literally just a way for the judge to get more money in his pocket, and they split the money up between the cops and the court workers in that town or county... It was a rural county with a population of like 5000 people and there were only like maybe 10 or 20 cops /court officials... So all those people were making a crap ton of money from the judge making people "donate" to this "charity"... Even the residents knew it was bullshit, but nobody ever did anything about it.
I never heard anything about it again and I would bet that this bogus "charity" still exists.
I make sure I don't drive fast when I'm in that county, and I just don't drive on the blue ridge parkway anymore.... In that county, the speed limit would change every quarter mile or so... It would be 45 and then halfway around a 180 degree blind corner they'd put a 25mph speed limit - and right next to the 25mph sign would be a cop with a radar gun. You could tell they just set it up to "catch" people "speeding".... Because you can't see the signs before you enter the turn.... And slamming on the brakes to go from 45 to 25 in the middle of a sharp turn is dangerous and easily could cause people to spin out and crash, especially in the rain or snow.
I absolutely hate and love NC at the same time. One of the most beautiful places on earth... Some of the most friendly, giving people you'll ever come across.... And the most corrupt police forces /govt. /state, county and city officials..... It's a great place to visit, just don't do anything even slightly illegal or you might have to donate $75 to some corrupt judge and his buddies.... Or worse yet the cop might ask you "you're not from around here are ya?"... That's never good.
I thank my lucky stars I'm just a regular old white dude who can easily fake a southern drawl cuz I was born and raised in FL... The cop who pulled me over even said something like "how's living in Florida?" and I answered "it's alright, I much prefer it up here though where the air don't smell like a gators backside and it snows in the winter".... I think that little compliment of north Carolina probably helped my cause.
Anyway if you're in NC I highly recommend going on the blue ridge parkway for a few hours just to see the sights and take in the beauty of the mountains.... It's especially awesome if it's just slightly foggy... The fog lays in the valleys and looks like rivers of snow, and you can watch the fog roll over the mountains... It's creepy but absolutely awesome.
Just DO NOT SPEED and watch out for motorcycles... It's a very popular road for bikers because it's gorgeous, and it's twisty and very fun to ride I'm sure.
I was having a blast in that Mercedes acting like I was a bootlegger, zooming around the mountain and playing race car driver. I'm lucky I only got caught doing 58 or 59mph, cuz I was definitely going much faster before I got caught. I think I was also given some leeway bc it was past sundown and the road was absolutely empty, I was the only car for miles and miles. And I just happened to be driving a convertible gold Mercedes 😂😂😂 I was gonna get caught no matter what now that I think about it. Still had fun though, and for a luxury car that thing sure was fun to drive! It wasn't worth it though. Wouldn't recommend getting pulled over in rural NC. You'll either have to donate to the corrupt judges new car, or maybe you might hear banjo music....

In my opinion NASCAR's Darkest Day was when they entered the political arena. The whole Bubba Wallace fiasco was the last straw for me. I have watched NASCAR for over 30 years.
