In Moscow in the 80s there was a saying that if you wore the ear flaps down you were a bit of a girl. I wanted to fit in so I wore them up throughout the winter of 1988, minus 30 celcius. Moral: don’t try to fit in.

When i was a kid i the 90's in Canada, it was not even that cold out... just very windy, the way i was standing the wind hit one side of my face for some time. i got a inner ear issue i forgot what it was called, i was very young but it killed every nerve in half my face.
I did not feel anything and my skin dropped, after a few months of meds it slowly came back. I was lucky.

I’m from India and when the flaps are up, the hat looks like a ‘Nawab’ hat which is worn by old men in India. So I always keep the ears down.

I've always been a little worried that I was going to get called a commie or something for wearing it, but it's probably just all in my head. I either get compliments or I get to not freeze my ass off. Nothing but good has come from wearing a Ushanka in the winter, so I don't worry about the dumb thoughts in my head telling me it might draw negative attention, because it really doesn't.

Yeah, things have changed since last I wrote this. If it was really cold out, I'd still wear it, but if I see a bunch of "my people" sporting Gadsen, Punisher and American flag symbols, I'll probably not be wearing it without them knowing I'm not antifa or whatnot.

As a bald guy in the Northern U.S. Midwest. A stocking hat under an Ushanka makes deer hunting and ice fishing much more bearable. Having ear flaps, ski goggles and a scarf are a must for doing chores in blizzard conditions.

Personally i opt for russian military ushankas for just in general wear because I like the look and feel and I know they are of high quality just to enjoy the winter outdoors. This video has kinda eye opened and now I will look for another ushanka for wear when it is cold and I wish to be more formal in appearance so to speak :)

Or Plumbum. Or Gorky Park with William Hurt. Ushanka is supposed to be tall and full. Btw, you shouldn't wear it in the rain either way, so the full fur ushanka is more elite than a part leather or suede ushanka.

A Chukcha (indigenous) sits on the shore of the Bering Strait. An American submarine surfaces. The American captain opens the hatch and asks: "Which way is Alaska?" The Chukcha points his finger: "That way!" / "Thanks!" says the American, shouts "South-South-East, bearing 159.5 degrees!" down the hatch and the submarine submerges. Ten minutes later, a Soviet submarine emerges. The Russian captain opens the hatch and asks the Chukcha: "Where did the American submarine go?" The Chukcha replies: "South-South-East bearing 159.5 degrees!" "Don't be a smart-ass", says the captain, "just point your finger!"
