I am just sad that Mafia launched after GTA 3. Mafia was in many ways better than GTA 3 and would be a bigger frenchise.
Now after writing a nice comment and liking the video, i am gonna watch it like everyone should ^^
Could have gone the other way. Release before GTA 3 like Urban Chaos did and then just get overshadowed....but Urban Chaos was genuinely bad anyway.
Early in development the ganeplay was like driver, the on foot part wasn't part of the plan. And while you make a good point theres no chance Mafia could have been released in its release state before 2001. But Mafia as a series could have been the realistic and cinematic (oxymoron I know) alternative to Gta alongside the later saints row.
It isn't a bigger franchise not for the fact that it came after GTA, it isn't because Take Two and 2k keep rushing each game to hell.
I love mafia but nah. Rockstar makes better games than hanger 13. San Andreas is one of the best games ever made still to this day.

there were no lights in the Xbox version lol... try doing the mission where you have to steal the race car, get it to the garage and back with no damage while you can't see.

Cutscenes are indeed ported from the PC version, but it's great they upgraded them a bit, in terms of sounds especially, they're much better in my opinion, the environment feels a bit more alive (The loading screens are a nice touch as well).
I think it was definitely better on the xbox having played both ps2 and xbox ports, in the xbox you could choose to replay checkpoints instead of having to replay the whole mission to get to a part you liked.
When I first played this on pc around 2004 with a powerful pc for the time, the graphics and realism were baffling. It looked like the sharpest smoothest game. I didn't play any other pc games then with these production values. The audio was teriffic too. The backstreet chases and ambience were unlike anything else at the time on consoles.

Eh its not that important. Its better to have it i guess but i'd rarely use it.
I turned my hud off for a screenshot in new vegas yesterday and then decided to just keep playing with it off and it made a considerable difference

Not gonna lie, I really still hope that someday Microsoft will make this version backwards compatible like other OG Xbox games. The idea of driving the cars with a trigger and analog sticks, through an HDMI equipped console, would be epic. And sure, there's DE just around the corner and I could just get a wheel and pedals for PC....but I'd love to play the original version with slightly better driving controls.
Oh well, I'll just stick with PC and DE!
If you could, please see if you can still get the 50s Ford Thunderbird/ Boltthrower from shooting the bridge window in this version. I've always wondered if that was included on consoles or PC only.
Doubt they will make it backward compatibile especially since it has a remake already

Voices are better in the original than DE. Although the only voice I have a real problem with is Paulie's in DE. It just sounds horrible.
@KeoneArt the voiceover work in the original is so bland. Don’t forget, video games are a lot like film that you play instead of watch. They are voice actors after all so it should be more film a movie than the monotone voices in the original!

@Ibrahim Sultanovic actually they didn't kill them in front. They took them to the back, probably gave some beating and then shot them there with magnum, disposing of the bodies later. Of course, the firing sound is heard around the block, but nobody saw nothing. They weren't at war, but the tension certainly rose after previous chapter, where Morello's goons were chasing Sam and Paulie. You should also remember that those two were running and firing through the half of Little Italy, other family territory, scaring normal people and then invaded other family's headquarters. That's creating way more heat, it's a complete disorder, you don't do that around such places. Just like you can't murder someone in front of other gangster's house. So yeah, they deserved death. And for all this Salieri decided to show Morello how it looks, sending Tom and Paulie to create some noise around the bar of his own.
I played this game on Xbox when I was a kid, and I thought it was ok. But then again, the PC version is still superior.

It's hard to believe that he never realized that Paulie will follow you in Bolt Ace back to Salieri's. As far as I know, it's supposed to do that in ALL versions of the original game, the only time I have seen it play out differently is in the Definitive Edition gameplay he uploaded.
Edit: He always ran back to the Bolt Ace in his gameplay for Molotov Party on the PC. He never grabbed the Falconer from the garage. So that's why he didn't know about that.
He never grabbed the car because he didn’t listen to paulie. He still talks about the car as a secret throughout the video.

Something that is changed in the console versions are the earlier cars are much faster and the speed limit is now 60 compared to 40 in the PC version.

If you watch the gear selector, in the PC version, the Model T (the car you're driving) only has two gears much like the original car. For some reason, in this port.... the Model T has 3 speeds. That might explain the increased performance?

I always thought the Xbox port was pretty good! The cinematics being pre rendered is of course unfortunate, but on the bright side they updated them with some nice effects.

Good old times where there wasn't a minimap showing you exactly where you need to go, but instead you've had only a compass in the top left and that was your only option to progress further in the game
Loved this game as a kid. I had it on PC and I had a friend who had a copy on PS2. He would always insist that the PS2 graphics were way better than the PC. Even after I showed him lol super funny memory!

If you regularly use real hardware for PS2 and Original Xbox I’d recommend the Kaico range of HDMI adaptors - they cover most of the older systems and the image quality is far superior to the Pound Technology products I’ve found.
Ps2 version is a hell of a lot worse than the xbox version

Kinda related but anyone ever play Gangsters: Organized Crime? I used to play both that and Mafia a lot when I was younger
Now for a side note: for anyone that didn't know, Gangsters was a strategy game where you run your own mob. You really had to get organized about your crime with lieutenants and crews, and not to mention your money and territory
I only played Mafia on ps2 and The Godfather when it worked, scratched games used to be a pain in the ass.

@@exefune2960 Sadly I’ve had some trouble running it for years as it’s an old game, but once I got a feel for things, I remember it was pretty fun. I liked organizing extortion and collection crews for money and territory. Going to war with other families meant sacrificing income, since you’d have to turn those crews into protection and hit squads.

Instead of going off the Gulliano bridge and taking the road to the right to get to Bertone, you can just turn left and go next to the bridge. It's shorter than the route in Definitive Edition.
I mean, why not. Its an old game and we should appreciate those realistic shadows inside a 2001 game

I think the console versions have better, more cinematic cutscenes. I'm pretty sure they are pre-rendered video on console instead of in engine like on PC.
It makes it feel like you are watching and then experiencing a movie from around the late 70s to 80s.

Same as Return to Castle Wolfensteins xbox port, the cutscenes are much smoother. In my opinion one of the best ports in gaming history.
Yeah, it has some sort of filter that makes it look like a movie and the movements are more smooth, and characters feel more detailed
I started watching back in 2018 for KCD but honestly at this point i prefer Mafia videos over KCD ones, sure i love that game and wouldn't complain if roxy uploaded another one but i definitely got burned out. Playing it for hours while simultaneously watching somebody else play it almost daily lmao
Wait, the speed limit is 60 mph? In the PC version it's just 40 mph (60 kph), which is more like the usual speed limit in cities.
It was changed probably to compensate the wait time caused by loading screens. It would be truly annoying to drive 40 mph max with that amount of loading.

For me on PC, Paulie would always take the Ford T and calmly drive it back home if I took the Studebaker as well
i played this on pc back then,.. so i did never have to endure this dread lucky me. This port looks like Driver 2 to PS1 almost
you absolutely nailed it. I'm an old school gamer and am VERY lenient towards games in general. However, Driver 2 and Mafia 1 Xbox, were two of the very few games I had to stop playing because the graphics were that bad. And that was upon their release.

Paulie actually tells you to check the shed when you get there because there might be something nice inside so it's not really a secret if you pay attention to what he says.Also the Xbox version is more similar to the PC because the Xbox actually has an Intel Pentium 3 processor just like the computers had back in those days.It's mostly limited because it has a slow GPU otherwise it would have lookes just like the PC version
Lack of Freeride Extreme is an absolute turnoff. That and the city is missing detail, pedestrians, and traffic, it's certainly more dead. If you can get past the graphical limitations, that's fine, but for a 2004 port this looks quite bad. The PC original was released in 2002, and no, the port wasn't done by Illusion Softworks/2K Czech themselves.
Stick with the PC version if you have it. If not, go for this.

@@MtpMuzik Of course not, do you even know what Freeride Extreme is though? It's 19 unique missions set in Freeride mode. You get a special car for each completed mission.
Theres so many games ps2 and xbox era that dont have subtitles option . It sucks...

Lol! that was so much fun. On the one hand you don't like that they made DE easier in one aspect, i.e. the hidden vehicle, but on the other hand you like that they made it easier to get to Lucas. Personally I would prefer it if they kept it difficult all round, no compromise.
And this is why you are not a game developer. Making you take an extra long route to get to a place that you would want to travel to often is bad map design, not difficulty. There is nothing inherently difficult about having to drive an extra few blocks.

Sexy Biscuit, I regret to inform you that the Backwards Compatibility program on Xbox was discontinued sometime last year. Any games that are not currently on the roster of games compatible with the new systems, will NOT be added in the future.
Not true, xbox said they will stop adding to the back compatible list until after the launch of the xbox series x/s. The back compatible team used this year to basically move everything that's currently on xbox one to series x/s. I'm sure next year they'll start adding more to the list.

Why'd they change the Bolt Ace like that, the pc version seemed more accurate to the Ford Model T, quite a strange change...

Regardless of the downgraded graphics, I thought it was cool that the doors fall off the cars. That was something not in the PC version. You'd have bumpers and headlamps that could fall off, but not the doors. Paulie does indeed drive the Bolt Ace back if you pick up the Falconer, which it also applies to the PC version. He's not the best driver in the world but I have followed him back all the way once before. The AI of the drivers in this game certainly have a bit to be desired but it's still a very fun game. I also noticed that the Bolt Ace seems to have a 3rd gear, in the PC version, there's only 2 gears. I also like that on the map, they'd highlighted points of interest, rather than just the bar, Lucas, etc. So it both has its good and bad points. No subtitles, that would drive me nuts though.

If anything, you could even replace the generic looking Vito at the end of the game. Now if only they'd port Joe over, that would make it perfect!
Well the Bolt Ace was modelled off the Ford model T...which had a 2 speed gearbox

Amazing video, this original Xbox version of mafia is the one I prefer to this day. The one I had for ps2 years ago was completely broken and would freeze up lol. Not from scratches either. Such a great game, one of my favorites

On pc, in the options you can change between 40Mph and 60 Kmh on console is default on Kilometers I guess.
The speedometer was in mph though and it allowed him to go 60 mph

The PS2 has no analogue speed control, that is what makes it the worst port for me.

It's not about just ports . It's just the game itself is terrible in my opinion
Console ports were done by extarnal studio and have not much to do with original creator Illusion Softworks, that's why it sucks and looks terrible. But honestly, consoles from that time (PS2) were so weak that such result was logical, look for example how GTA Vice City and GTA SA looked, it doesn't look better.
PS: English dubbing is terrible at all, even in PC version. I am glad I speak Czech and can play it in original sound which was done during development of game, not later by some external studio. :-D
thanks. That said, you're wrong. There's zero comparison between GTA (specifically SA) environments and overall graphics compare to this mess. Mafia 1 was a beautiful, beautiful PC game, and was given sh1t treatment on consoles. Sidenote: the OG Xbox was fairly powerful for its day. Besides the previous example, consider a port like Half-Life 2. No comparison.

It's a pity that in the Definitive Edition [Definitive Profanation] there is no more music performed by Mills Bros. The appearance and voices of the characters as well as the street layout in the city have been changed. The game guides the player by the hand - it displays signs and does not require traveling to the action site. Like Rambo, Tommy kills a whole host of enemies. Taxis from 1930 have a radio and during chases we hear police radios like in the GTA. Running away through road works to lose your pursuit? Really? In these cars from the 1930s on spoked wheels? The game definitely lacks realism. And the most stupid thing. After Paulie's death, it is Tommy who proposes a meeting at the gallery, he gets there in three minutes. Sam is already waiting with his army. It makes no sense. In the Original, it was Sam who waited already prepared in the gallery and ordered Tommy to come.
