Whats the best deal you’ve found on a drum? This one probably tops it for me! Ironically, while I was at Drumeo, we filmed a thrift store challenge video, so be sure to head over there and check it out! ua-cam.com/video/6aKQKd6VouI/v-deo.html
I got a A custom special realease crash at guitar center for only $100!!!
I just bought a pearl export for $80
rdavidr saw that video and it’s crazy all the things we can do with things we already have! Great work on thin snare. You’ve motivated me to do some work on a set a of drums and after watching how you cleaned some of your toms it really really helped me out. Thanks for your videos!!
Free Acrolite in nearly perfect condition. Or 500$ for my 8 piece pearl exports
Ludwig Acrolite Black Galaxy for $15 off Craigslist. Still use it to this day.
When Dave introduces 50 problems with the snare in the first 40 seconds, you know it’s gonna be a good video.
🤣
Sea Kay that math blew my mind
My lead guitarist bought me a chrome snare from a yard sale for $5. The shell and rims were frosted and grimy, heads were split, and there was only a few stands left of the snare springs. I spent a lot of elbow grease cleaning it, new heads and snare springs, etc and did some research. Turns out, it’s a 1970’s Yamaha Recording Custom Chrome snare, and is worth about $350 or so. To me, it is priceless, best sounding one I have ever owned, I will never part with it!
95% beard
5% body
110% drums
Keep it up
This is like pimp my ride for drums
subcomandante marcos 😂
Don't forget 7" monitors around the kick and above the cymbals.
I found a 5 pc set of blue Ludwig Vistalites for 30$ at a garage sale.... I snatched them up fast!
David, I've waited for this Saturday morning for a long time. Welcome back. When I was a kid I'd wake up excited for Saturday morning cartoons, now its just RDavidR videos
Me too
i wanna see this dude build an entire drum set from scratch. that would make an insane special
6:23 never thought to cut a snare strap. I have learned something today.
Man, that snare went through hell. So glad you brought it back to life.
Hahaha, "this Nodar Rode fellow." Gonna have to ask him about this drum! Incredible find and equally-incredible restoration.
I'm really surprised that you didn't use Lock-tight or some other thread-locker to insure that your lug bolts don't loosen. I could swear that I've seen you do that before.
Dude they record so well. That is a once in a life time find
Time & Labor Cost ?
Nodar Rhode does good work - he’s from here in New York like me. He had a shop in Manhattan for years. What a score !
Agh! As a history buff, I had a an anxiety spasm when he removed that writing. That's a piece of provenance completely lost.
Pissed me off when he took Nodar Rode sig off.
@@Dardrum Funny story. I met legendary nor cal drummer Leonard Hays from Y&T. I had no idea of who he was. This was years before the internet. I met Leonard at local bar and restaurant some 20 years ago. He was playing in a cover band. A bit loud for the venue but awesome drummer nonetheless. I thought he was Bonzo reincarnated. Totally cool cat. When my buddy told me who he was, I was like hot dam!!! Mr Hays passed away about 2 years ago.
I've got a buddy that found a Neumann U67 with the power supply unit in a thrift shop once. All it needed was a clean and a new switch. Insane find.
😵 I wish I was that lucky!
@subcomandante marcos last I heard it was still in rotation in his studio, but who knows, I've not seen that guy since I moved to Aus ten years ago...
Excellent work on the snare aside, I really enjoy watching your playing progress. Your beats you play to showcase your hardware just keep getting better and better and I love the way you record your drums. Great sound, great playing, great work!
Dave, enjoy you're sence of humor and skills of restoration on these drum videos. Glad I found this site!!👍👍

Muddy water?
sounds like something of off murder of the universe
or invisible face too
@@albertovucossa6090 it is literally Invisible Face
cant be he has a bass drum in both clips
Shout out from Tasmania! That snare sounds hot! Like most Aussies we're falling apart a little bit, but we're tough.
Man, your videos are the best. Chill, right to the point, great work on those drums, wish I was as crafty as you. Cool thrift store gem!
Nodar Rode - legendary NYC drum repairer, restorer etc.
Ive heard mixed things about him. His work is good, no doubt about it. But putting yamaha tom mounts on old ludwigs and cutting sharp bearing edges on vintage Gretschs and the whole sharpie thing, I dont really know if I can get behind lol
@@rdavidr he repaired Brian Blade and Jeff Ballard's old Zildjians... Also players often aren't so bothered with keeping drums original.
I bought a Sonor rosewood kit with a virgin bass drum from him. He wanted to put a Yamaha mount on and I had stop him.
Rdavidr videos are awesome! Love what he does. Brilliant.
It won't tune easily because of the cracked drumshelll, regardless of thorough repair job. It's because of the physics of stress placed on the shell when tightening the tension rods.
This. My acrylic snare cracked a month ago (just a small crack - not all the way) and it became instantly untunable.
It’s always a good day when David posts
It makes me mad that the previous owner would modify this drum so much. I have a Brady snare it it's amazing! I would never dream of modifying it.
Thanks RDavidR for repairing this piece of art.
your vids really keep inspiring me to go further into filming and doing some crafty stuff!! keep it up man
konnai hi i checked out your channel and i see you’re a clikkie ||-// subbed
Amazing Phatt open sound despite parts loose and “imperfect” tuning, who cares, things got character and tone for days!
Great save, Dave! I’m surprised you didn’t use your plotter to cut a new Brady badge sticker.
Enjoyed this as usual! Thanks David!😎💖
Kinda funny to be flipping through UA-cam and stumble on a fellow drummer from RVA. 👊
Didn't expect that sound 🤘😎🤘 .. good tuned!!
I use to have a 12x7 Brady Jarrah PLT snare and wow.. that thing sounded SOO good. I regret selling it many years ago. Great Job 👍 and yes Brady have sharp edges for sure
Wicked as always. Also, love the grooves you were playing :D
Please check Nodar out. He's a pro drum maker and repair specialist longer than we've been playing.I had lots of snares and snare beds you have a Brady legend a.its no doubt from the late 80's-early 90's.thats history especially with nodar.anyway, keep up the great work.it's very refreshing to see your approach to your program.love it and what you do.
Great find, rescue and sound! The 'massive' snare bed is like the old Slingerland snares.
my gosh, Brady sounds incredible!
Inspiring Doc-😁thx - drum-buddy !
collaborative efforts between my favorite drum channels~
@rdavidr thank you for your videos Man! Always happy when you post! Just 2 quick questions 1) do you just have the nylon washers on there, no metal ones? 2) what beater is on your kick? it sounds really good
Love your vids David keep up the good work
Dave great to see you still making videos
Best deal I ever found on a drum was for $39 at a own shop, a rusty 14x5.5 pearl custom alloy sensitone steel eight lug with the beaded shell. It had rubber gaskets between all contact points the shell made with hardware which I really liked. It had triple flanged hoops but I put die cast hoops on it after restoring it and put a 40 strand puresound bed on it, slapped on an Evans clear snareside 300 and a coated UV2. By far my favorite snare I have. Sounds perfect for me at all tunings.
Dude sharping or working on the edges is so worth it!! Don't be afraid to fixed them but also don be imprudent but you will definitely hear the difference
Brady Snare at a Thrift Store? he do
he do be havin some ring doe
Such good work. Love the videos!
Yes looks and sounds good.
What is the shell material?
I've heard of nodar. He had a drum shop in New York city. A good friend of mine has a whole set of sonar that nodes reworked. Pretty cool find.
i have a 1980s brady snare as i live in Perth Aus .. its one of the first Chris built and it in my top 5 snares for sure .
Good job, sounds great.Really nice beat.
Killer save🤘👍!
Please upload more I love these vids ❤️❤️❤️
One of your best snare sounds!
I think it sounded great before the screw backed out. That second beat you was playing while the screw was still where it was supposed to be was killer. I loved the transition into and out of it. The whole groove has a nice flow to it.
That snare sounds amazing.
Im a fan of your work man... Just wanna ask, what head do you put as batter head and snare side..?
I’m from Perth, West Australia where Chris Brady made his drums. As an owner of one of his snares, I cannot fathom why someone would want to sharpen the bearing edges on a drum like that... 🤔
I was given a Brady snare years ago . It was a jarrah ply shell and the bearing were stupidly sharp . Posably the worst snare drum I've owned..
I bought an old Rogers kit with pretty rough edges, so I went ahead and gave them new sharp 45 degree edges just to see what would happen.
The toms became more resonant than any drum I have ever owned and I had to round over the edges a bit because it was just too much on recordings.
Aww, bummer about those screws falling out, especially after all the effort being put into restoring this drum! Gotta say I admire your patience David, cleaning all the lugs with cotton buds and stuff! And that snare does sound great, too :-) My band once shared a practice room with another band, in the early 90's, and I was using their beautiful black lacquer Yamaha set that also had a Brady wood snare; That was the first time I heard about that brand but hadn't known yet they were Australian (my neighbouring country). Cheers, V. :-)
Great video. I like the way you tune your toms.
That snare sounds amazing! And I have the same hats as you (on the drum kit). Those Meinl Byzance 15" Duel Hats are killer!
Thanks, great video with really great tips.
I remember when you commented on one of my videos on my old account around 9 years ago - and it's so awesome to see how far you've come man. I've been following you ever since! Absolutely love your channel.
Got to ask...what heads are you using on your toms!? They sound insane!
Damn, I have no idea what video youre talking about haha. but remo emperor coated on top and ambassador clears on the bottom
Sounds good. Reminds me of a sweet DW snare I once had. A wood hoop would be cool, too.
please never change your content
I've seen a lot of work from Nodar Rode ( my understanding is he owned a drum shop in Manhattan for some time and worked on many a drum for numerous people ) But he left his mark in any drum he worked on for sure. Also I use Noxon polish for all hardware, cleans and removes rust. Great stuff.
Two fave things on UA-cam: the guy who takes care of his loomster fish and rdavidr bringing drums back to life
My heart dropped with that logo peeling off :( great video man I'm sorry that happened but got a great chuckle out of the drawer of shame!
I just can't believe how good you are at fixing drum that are in the worst of conditions, It's INSANE!!!
That was a cool beat 👍.
I need to get my drums out of storage. 🤔
I have a Brady block snare, and yeh it's hard to tune as well, it has a very limited running range but sounds incredible.
Helll yeah my boy David playing some king gizzard and the lizard wizard.
I love wood snare drums.
Even with the lug off.
Cheers
I have so many questions... first of all, amazing to see you repair that crack!
What do you think the retail value was for that drum? or what would it be if it was mint?
And who would destroy a Brady drum like that? the crack... the recut bearing edges... wtf
Love the 7/4 groove at the end. Odd time signatures are my favorite. You should do one with 5/8 in your video.
it's invisible face by king gizzard & the lizard wizard, make sure to check it out!
@@albertovucossa6090 thanks for telling me that! I just listened to it and I dig it. I love finding new and different music so thank you for your help.
@@eddiedeli that's cool bro!
Nodar Rodé has been repairing and customizing drums, as well as developing his own collapsible drum system for longer that you've been on this planet. He began on 46th Street at the Manhattan Drum Shop under Joe Callato. He then had his own shop, but, after the Musician's Row got gentrified and the whole Times Square became the hellhole that it is, he had to move the shop to his house in NJ.
All NYC drummers (including all the legendary names in all genres) had their drums serviced at the Manhattan Drum Shop. If he cut that snare bed, then it's done correctly.
hello rdavidr I greet you from Veracruz, Mexico ... a question: why do you use to lubricate the screws of the snares and take the lithium grease? I would like you to explain it ... thank you very much ... a big hug ...
Hey! Great vid man. Whats the hip hop track in the background ?
A thought, try a coated Ambassador(no dots) to bring some life to it,bottom head a turn and a half and go from there! My go to when I get a bad bearing edge drum,or a hard to tune drum. Love your channel by the way.
Amazing repairing work man! Do you think that the crack will hold the playing at least for a couple of years? I have a snare with a similar crack and I didn't know what to do, I'm probably gonna try this method with glue and clamps. Greetings from Argentina!
Unreal!
What ride cymbal are you using in this video? I love it!
Great Jam 😎 ! From what little I know of drums that snare sounds like something Buddy Rich would've used 👏😯
The part that reminds you of the sonar finish reminds me of the original stormtrooper helmets that were yellowing in spots.
Btw, is the music in your videos still yours? And is it still on sound cloud?
I bought a used Ludwig snare drum back in highschool for $10bucks in 90s. It was wooden pristine had some kind of crank mount on side for a cymbal or music stand maybe? It has to be an antique now.
Those are my favorite beaters and I have turned on 4 drummers to then already....
Your videos give me life !
David, you just made my shitty day a whole lot better 😁
sounds great!
Luckily for you, Nodar is a drum genius and NYC drum maintenance mainstay
love that snare ❤
rdavidr The Giver of Life
Nodar Rode is a vintage drum repairer and cymbal smith located in the NYC metropolitan area. He is well known by some of the jazz drummers in the area and apparently he has been around for years.
I found a tama imperialstar high hat stand in decent condition with 14" Sabian AAX stage hats the only thing wrong with any of it was the bottom hat was cracked but just like barely. At goodwill for $9.99
The second hand Brady drums getting around west Australia is insane. Amazing instruments. If only I had a spare $2000 laying around
Those hi hats sounds sick. Are they 15”s?
lol, when I found an old Rogers Superten in the band building I'm playing at and bought and restored it (greatly inspired by you, you'r aluminum foil trick works wonders on chrome) one of the lugs came loose too, the thread on the screw was just to short for the plastic spacer. So I remembered that rattling sound :D
I got a question to ask you under on the bass drum I saw that it has Tama hits is that a friend of Tama yes or no
Would you be able to "save" the logo by printing a duplicate like you do with bass drum heads, carefully affixing it over the old painted logo on the badge?
Love the vid, man. I was just a bit shocked when the sticker badge peeled off.
as was I! Super bummed I wasnt filming when it happened
If you have a plotter/cutter or know someone who owns a sign shop, you can get them to do a "Peel & Stick" label of the Brady Logo... Great find!
Hope you get on drummer again!!!
