This is reminding me so much of a Celtic History class I took in college. The first few lectures were the professor disabusing us of all the 19th century Romantic notions we may have about what the word "Celtic" even means. It was incredible, and so is this video.

I think the first thing you missed in this video is the Celts were not once race. It was a culture, almost nomadic, that spread wide across Europe before Rome. There was even a Celtic Enclave (Galatians) in Turkey after the Alexander conquest.
It's great to hear someone thoughtfully seperate a way of life, or path, with religion. In Colchester UK, ironically considering the history, people think the centres were drunken savage barbarians. According to historical accounts, the Scythian religion can be characterized as a combination of worshiping a pantheon of gods alongside a deep reverence for animals, trees, springs, and the land itself, essentially incorporating elements of both a traditional deity-based system and a more animistic belief system in nature.
Eu estava nesse momento pensando nos celtas e abri o UA-cam, primeiro vídeo que me apareceu foi esse. Você sempre acerta, Arith 👏🏻 muito carinho de São Paulo, Brasil
I just had to cut down a 200 year old that I named Lord Elder Box. I was so sad but now I have an amazing tree stump that I'm turning into a birdbath. Incidentally, a little pine of some sort started growing in my yard about 10 years ago I named it Prick. 💞🌲
I enjoyed it, the only thing I might argue is that I'm not certain Celtic society had disappeared from the continent by the time it reached "British" shores, although they are the last outpost to integrate Celtic culture language. Archaeologically, I think there is evidence to show that a Celtic material culture was thriving amongst the tribes, the Catuvellauni, Brigantes, Iceni, Dumnonii, Nervi etc, for several hundred years before Caesar's Gallic war. I think the Belgae who fell in Gaul had also been simultaneously flourishing across the channel in what would be southern England for a couple centuries before the Roman invasion of Gaul. As for culturally, "Celtic" used to be considered as a language grouping, as opposed to the Germanic languages for instance. In Britain there are the P & Q Celtic groups, that's Brythonic and Gaelic. What is true and supports what you quite rightly say, and the physical evidence for the diffusion, is that the Brythonic languages ( later Welsh, Cornish) are insular languages, whereas the Gaelic (Irish, Manx, Scots Gaelic) are from the continent. Interesting it skipped the heart of the island and made a home across the Irish sea and up into the northern reaches.
Yeah, I think that nothing you have said is controversial. The people moving from the East and South into the West and North would have encountered many folk on their travels and we know that even in Scotland there were several separate groups living here, they didn't begin to form into a single nation until the 9th century and even then it took 500 years to solidify. Although there are some similarities throughout Europe it certainly doesn't mean everyone believed the same things and spoke a common language . Geography, climate, land fertility etc would all affect who and what was worshipped as well as folk building on the traditions from those who came before them. PS, we name our house plants, including Florence the fig tree, we haven't named out trees but we do absolutely adore them. Thanks for the interesting video yet again Arith.
Nice, ty much friend. I look forward to that Lugh video, too 😊. I downloaded the Pocket fm app, and there's a story there called Asatru Teutsch that has some historic truth but, also much fiction around lugh and loki. Hope you have a great week.
McCullough a Gaelic surname, meaning "son of the hound of Ulster" (from "Mac Cú Uladh") with "Mac" signifying "son" and "Cú Uladh" meaning "hound of Ulster". The name Ulster comes from the Ulaidh, a group of tribes that had lived in the area. The Norsemen called the province Ulaztir, which was later translated into English as Ullister. Ula is a feminine name of Polish and Slovene origin that means "little she-bear". It comes from the Latin word Ursula, which comes from ursa, the word for the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. In Norse mythology, Ull (or Ullr or Uller) is the son of Sif, and the stepson of Thor. He is thought to be the god of Winter, of hunting, of hand-to-hand combat, and of the willow tree. or is ztir from styrr, Old Norse word can mean: styrr. m. , gen. styrjar and styrs, [ Engl. stir], a stir, tumult, brawl, disturbance. It also means "Son of the Boar". Esus was a Celtic god who was worshipped primarily in ancient Gaul and Britain. Esus, (Celtic: “Lord,” or “Master”), powerful Celtic deity, one of three mentioned by the Roman poet Lucan in the 1st century ad; the other two were Taranis (“Thunderer”) and Teutates (“God of the People”). Esus’ . A relief from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris portrays him as a bent woodman cutting a branch from a willow tree. The word Su and Sus means Pig. we get Susej from the pig, I misspelled sausage, susej is Jesus backwards, 'Saul' means Prayed for, a Sage is a Wise Teacher.
Esus was a Gaulish god primarily associated with woodcutting and is often linked to the Roman god Mercury too. In the Bible, Paul associated Jesus with the Roman god Mercury to undermine the worship of Mercury.
i think it´s much more simple in genetics.. the modern male line always seems to originate from somewhere in the pontic- caspian steppes. it says in the wiki that they "replaced" 90% of the older gene pool in the british islands (same of course in mainland earlier). all you have to do is to make the remaining 10% speak your language, and there you have it! a new empire is born (also called genocide). what was surprising to me is that even some of the hunter- gatherers had green / blue eyes, which now it makes sense to me that in some of the northern myths they´re told to have white eyes! what i mean is that even with hunter-gatherers there were several different population waves, across even a longer period of time. for example (technically) the sami people aren´t the indigenous people of the north, however they carry the genes (and customs) of those earlier peoples (it´s like 25% siberian, 15% western hunter-gatherer, 10% neolithic farmer and 50% white people or bronze age yamna).
The ancient Sumerian dying and rising god of healing was called Damu "The Child", damu means Blood, Brother and Relative. Damu was the son of Pabilsag, meaning Chief Ancestor, the husband of the goddess of Dogs Bau-Gula. Damu was protected by the Standing Wolf, born from the loins of the Bull's Thigh, the husband of the goddess of Rebirth, Reret "The Sow", wife of the Black Boar, Sahu the Hidden One. Damu "The Swine" is held in the head of Draco and it's first curl, his mother Bau-Gula is the She Goat star we call Vega, her husband Pabilsag is Sagittarius, the Standing Wolf is Ursa Minor, Reret is Twaweret seen as Draco the Dragon, the crocodile skin she wears on her head is Ursa Minor, Ur means Dog or Wolf, 'sa' in Sumerian means Red, or Muscle, Sinew, the 'sa' is the sign seen next to Twaeret's leg, meaning Protection, Lifesaver, Ursa Minor is known as the Little dipper, Thigh of the Bull's Leg is the Big Dipper, the leg that was cut of of Seth, the Black Boar. Sahu the Hidden One is Orion, known as Sah, meaning Pig. The "Three Leaps of the Gazelle" is a group of six stars in the constellation Ursa Major that represent the bear's paws. Alula, Tania and Talitha. Alula means Firstborn, Tania meaning fairy queen, Talitha meaning Little Girl. Is it OK to call the Gazelle a Stag? The gazelle is an Antelope, similar in appearance to the Deer or the Stag. Antelopes have horns, which are permanent and continue to grow throughout their lives. Deer have antlers, which are shed and regrown annually. Antelopes are part of the Bovidae family, which also includes cattle and goats, while deer are Not, but both deer and antelope are ruminant mammals, meaning they have multiple stomachs and chew cud. The stars of Orion's belt are associated with the Boar Hunt, chased by the Hounds, the stars of Orion's Sword. When you place Orion's Sword on the southwestern horizon, with the bright star Hatysa, found at the tip of Orion's Sword, you find Alula at mid heaven. In ancient Egyptian, Haty means Heart, 'sa' means Protection, you find Hatysa on the Thigh of Orion. In Egyptian mythology, Taweret goddess of the horizon held Seth down for Horus to amputate Seth's leg, cutting off his Sword, creating the Orion Nebula, Haya means Seed/Grain, the husband of Nisaba, the star Spica in Virgo. Haya is the Door-Keeper, god of Scribes. This alignment is seen 77 days after the Summer Solstice, when you find the Sun at the tip of Orion's Club, held between Gemini and Taurus, the Silver Gate of Man, Mash means Gemini, Twin or Two, like what you see with the paws of Ursa Major, it also means Goat, Mashu means Sacred Mountain, the underworld, home of the Ancestors, Pabilsag is the Chief Ancestor, he (Sagittarius) stands in front of the center of our galaxy, known as the Golden Gate of the Gods, where you find the Sun on the day of the Winter Solstice, next to the little bloody red spot Spiculum, meaning Spear.
It's sort of depressing because all of the ancient Indo-European cultures originally taught their beliefs by oral tradition. Only fragments of true beliefs (mixed with other peoples') have come down to us.
Correct me if I'm am wrong, please. But, if I understand correctly, don't the Irish have some ancient origins with the Basque? Of course both cultures are clearly different, but share a small degree of some cultural similarities. Ir is a shame that there is still a need to explain the falacy that there was a homogeneous Celtic ethnicity. And, as an American, I really like the way you expressed that there is no such thing as a single homogenous American ethnicity, just like there is no single, homogenous Celtic ethnicity.
Some really interesting insights Arith. However, we have to be careful in completely dismissing ethnicity and heritage. Using the same principles, one could argue there is no such thing as a Scandinavian, or German, or Italian. And yet they all have unique ethnic qualities. The cultural connection between all the Celtic groups is problematic. Particularly when Gauls are specified as a different distinct group. So, for example, one could rightly suppose the Irish to be Celtic. However, their language is Gaelic (Gaulic). The Romans, however, did differentiate between Celtic and Gauls. They also didn't refer to the peoples as Celts, but as Berbers (Barbarians). I strongly believe that Celts can be broadly accepted as having an ethnic heritage of light skin, eyes, and hair. In some parts, Celts are distinguished as being born with blue eyes, which is the Celtic gene. Of course, over the intervening period, many different outside cultures have effected the current genetic identity. I therefore continue to suggest that Celts, as a haplogroup. were not indigenous to their respective settlements, but were immigrants from a common source, and over time interbred with the existing indigenous peoples. The cultural links would certainly fall in with this theory. But also geographically. Because all Celtic groups share a common border with The Atlantic Ocean. Northern Portugal, Galicia, Basque, Britons, Irish, Welsh, Western England, Iceland, Holland, Germany, and Scandinavia. There is also a strong argument that Amazigh people shared Celtic ethnicity. As indeed the Abenaki.
Celts don't just have light eyes, a lot of the folk who came over to Scotland as part of the Clan Chattan are known to be dark haired and dark eyed. It's literally the family markers for some, of course there is diversity in this, depending on the time period you are looking at and the geographical area. We know the people who came over at the birth of the Bronze ages had migrated from the Stepps area, with many of the previous inhabitants, the stone-age farmers having been greatly affected by the plague (it seems). It's likely that people migrated in waves and as this was the end of the last ice age proper they moved further North than before. However we know they weren't the only group that existed even within the British Isles at the time, we had the Pict's as well as the Celt's and the Britons and of course then waves of other people. Even if they came from the same geographical area originally, they were very much separate within these areas.
@@MissFreyja Whilst I wouldn't argue that many of the current Clan Chattan have dark hair and eyes today, a huge amount of ethnodiversity has taken place between the Bronze Age, and today. It is still very old British folklore that many people with dark eyes are born with blue eyes. This is the true marker of Celtic genes. Babies born with dark eyes either don't have the gene, or it is genetically surpressed. People from all other ethnicities in the world always have dark eyes from birth. It is almost impossible today to find a pure blood line. But it has been evident in the past, and ruthlessly eliminated. The last pure blood Celts lived off the coast of Africa. But weren't black. Ask, What did The Guanches look like ? There is definitely something that is either forgotten, or hidden, regarding the true history of Celtic people. Maybe Plato was right about Atlantis ? Maybe there is more to cup and ring rock art than just art ?
@@markedwards9247 There are different groups who have light eyes and dark skin, some have red hair and blue eyes and dark skin etc. It is not only a "Celtic" trait and I doubt that there are any "pure" bloodlines from any particular ethnic group, they all traded and raided and so mixed in population. I expect what happened to a lot of these "Celtic" nations is they were killed off by plague or the Doggerland sea rise etc.
The Wabenaki were not Celtic. Maybe now with some of the fake tribes where European- Americans claim one single Native ancestor and attempt to form their own tribe based on each member having a single ancestor 5-6 generations back. The original Wabenaki were Indigenous like the other tribes that still exist in the northeastern area of modern day United States
I don't see why not as some of the so called gypsys /pre Roman came to the Isle's way before most but you may be forgetting the time before the World was broken, not that I disagree 🤔☺️
An early observation about Celtic religion: talking a whole lot before coming to the heart of the matter, to the subject even! Finally, after more then 4 minuten in... preliminaries, leading up to the subject. Pfff.
"I found a piece of jewellery made somewhere in a particular place, therefore this particular place belongs to these people," says dipsh** level thinking😂😂😂
But the Romans were gaul... My ancestry proves that... So basically he abandoned his people to make a new... I personally don't agree with Julius Caesar on anything and I'm Italian on my mom's side tracing back to pre roman era to the roman era to modern Italian.
What happened? Neo paganism has been around heck at least the early to mid 1900s.. new age stuff?. The last therapist I went to go see. She was a Christian. Said the same thing to me. "Oh you're into that new age stuff" You worship Muloch then Airth? The Christian nation push upper prefer?. Kind of disappointed in you and this video. Same with Freya. Most who walk a crooked path. Enjoy dna Analysis of personal ancestry. Making fun of tree lore belief. Almost every culture has some form of tree lore biblical branch. Watched a lot of your videos. This one makes me want to remove myself completely from you views
What are you trying to say, that paganism is new age, because some Christian made that statement, the word "Paganism" has been around a lot longer than the 1900's, placing 'neo' in front of anything is saying it's New, it seems like more of an opinion than a fact, they say our family DNA is the closest to the Levite DNA, they were the priest and temple workers, our name isn't Muloch, it's McCulloch, we are descents of the Iazyges, it means "To Sacrifice", McCullough means Son of the Boar, a Sus or is it Esus. My Tongue is Double Edged, play "Sin Eve" in reverse, you hear it echo "Venus". In Irish, culu means "reverse", macalla means "echo", do you have the ears to hear Culu Macalla. Maybe we are the Levite and they are the closest to our DNA. "Her Star, Rog Genome, Rog Envy" played in reverse will echo "Evening Star, Morning Star, Roger", can you guess my name?
🤣🌳Can't stop laughing, that was an awesome tree intro!!! Great video, love your work!
Please bring more Celtic content, this is a very underrated subject!

Was thinking of getting a triskelion tattoo. There are so many versions I'm lost.Celts were particularly interesting as a race. Great job.

I don’t kink shame lol those poor trees though.
"Oh you're into that new age stuff"
You worship Muloch then Airth?
