Thank you for this clarification. What is troubling is that the point of origin for the IE myths lies within the scope of the animistic and shamanic traditions of the of the Hunter-Gatherer societies, and it is difficult to garner a clear picture of what was added or redacted during translations. Clearly, the early scholarship in this vein was heavily influenced by Christianity, but what is perplexing is the adoption of the dragon slaying motif in the the cultures established by the IE societies. It would be greatly beneficial to determine if these themes are indeed indo-european, or if their origins in fact lie with the abrahamic faiths. Thank you for your thoughts on this topic, your insight is fantastic.

@Bob Bobbins If you are new here you probably don't know that I'm an archaeologist hehe. As I often say, archaeologists are history's detectives and indeed much is found that contradicts historical sources and the study of the material culture and comparative studies of myths helps a lot to get closer to the truth. Of course each year new findings come to the surface and certain theories have to be debunked, or changed in a couple of aspects. New findings always give new clues. Also, it is important to maintain interdisciplinarity between the various social sciences. It's not just about archaeology and history but also anthropology plays an important role in understanding ancient societies, often comparing surviving religious practices, folklore and tribal rituals with the findings.

Particularly in this instance where the subject matter is pre-Indo-European beliefs; which has left no linguistic or cultural context within which to interpret any of the symbols that might remain in the material culture of "Old Europe". Not to mention plenty of preChristian Indo-European lore that contradicts what the archaeologist here is saying about the wyrm.

I like this discussion. It casts light on all those things we lost to christianity. Perhaps nothing is truly lost, as nature will prevail. I couldn't help but think about the serpent power " kundalini" in eastern thought along with the chakra system. In some of that wisdom the serpent power rises to a higher spiritual level, not just coiled in the base/ root chakra of physical needs.
Part of the Christian struggle with the serpent seems an attempt to make things black and white, and demonize the chaotic forces.
Conquering the serpent ..becomes conquering a primitive , base nature=the devil.
There is an underlying arrogance that weaves in...it seems they ( abrahamic religions)discarded pagan wisdom as base nature, and drew lines between good and evil..they compartmentalized what god created, they tried to control nature..
But nature will always be indifferent to petty concerns and serve a greater mystery we only perceive pieces of...seems the message is in its cycles....we will go on and on...

In its madness of treathing "gods ceation" like something copyrighted, they were obsessed with seeing any illness as a manifestation of sin, or something that was meant to be anyways. & tried their best to keep medical knowledge/technology at the last minimum you need for a surviving community.
Christianity was designed to control people. Almost everything in it was stolen, coopted and inverted to serve the means of controlling people. Gnosticism for example has the same garden of Eden myth but there version which is older says that the serpent is the good one and yahweh is an archon(demon).
The Sumerians called ond líl and megin was called melam. The effects of melam on others was called ni. The serpent was called Abzu who was represented in the natural world by the form of snaking freshwater rivers which give life to those who drink from it.
The Sumerians did have a sky god as well as a sky goddess (or more accurately wind god and wind goddess) who ruled the domain of the heavens (i.e. the atmosphere, where birds fly and the winds blow, not the Christian corruption of the concept), and they were the children of the serpent and served under her, not as her adversaries.
The symbol of the god fighting the serpent doesn't find its origin in Christianity however, it finds its origin in Babylon; Ninurta (the thunder god who wields the magical mace) slaying the seven-headed dragon represented the forces of divine order (those of life) conquering the forces of chaos (those of destruction) - which was plagiarized by the Old Testament and corrupted. That seven-headed dragon wasn't supposed to be the same dragon of Abzu, but rather an entirely separate storm beast; a stark contrast to the Abzu who is the life-giver. That in turn is a later adaptation of a earlier Sumerian version of the same story where it wasn't a dragon at all but rather a lion-headed eagle called Imdugud. (Literally "massive stormcloud") The story is a kind of personification of storms - the lightning being seen as the thunder god fighting against the destructive cloud.

Will a good seven headed creature and a bad version seven headed creature make sense, actually.
(As long as you are loose with the definition of good and evil...because they aren't really good labels and are a Christian perversion of light and dark and male and female, etc.)
Which is similar to the Egyptian view... their creation story is merely particle physics personified to give you clues about what that force was like, its job and character, which is still applicable to Animism.
And for every Force there was its opposite.

I am not sure that this is so much a christian motiff as one of civilization against that of more "nature" based belief systems and cultures. For example, you can see these motiffs in Greek myths (and is present in their poetry and plays) where the older religions gave more power to both women and the serpent. The prime example being that of Apollo defeating Python and taking over the oracle center of Delphi. I think this might have more to do with "patriarchal" systems of belief, which came with large city states, empires, etc, versus that of more tribal, female dominated societies. But I also absolutely agree that this theme was picked up by Chrisitans and was applied to new religions they encountered. I will also add that this "serpent slaying motif" showed up long before the Christians (though they may owe a debt to it) in the Sumerian story of the Enuma Ellish and the slaying of the female cosmic serpent, Tiamat by her son, Marduk. I think so too. The Gorgons were children of the Gods of the Dangers of the Western Sea. Several other of their children had serpent characteristics also. Many Serpents were created to guard or protect something. But they eventually had to be defeated in order to have progress. Clearly this is meaningful and I think the symbolism is more subtle than good vs. evil.
Well you even get it in the first "mythology" which was recorded, that of the Enuma Elish, where Tiamat, the cosmic dragon was slaughtered by her male child. Similarly, you have Zeus defeating Gaia's ultimate defender Typhon, who was also a serpent. I truly believe these are cultural battles which transformed the world from matriarchies to patriarchies. So, its possible that even these Nordic myths were recorded acurately, as this slaughter of the serpent seems to be more of a cultural shift, than a purely religious motif.

Great video Arith! That is an impressive monolith! Unfortunately, where I live in Nova Scotia Canada, we don't have any old pagan standing stones, or spaces like that here. One thing I would add, is that the attack on paganism and trying to kill the serpentine energy, was before Christianity... beginning 3000-2300BCE and forward, when hunter gatherers became farmers, and then "rulers" began to try and create a monopoly of wealth, power and resources and hoard it for themselves. I'm thinking of ancient Sumer which was conquered by the Akkadians (Sargon the Great of Akkad--2300 BC). At that time many of the old pagan Goddesses were also forsaken such as Inanna/Ishtar/Astarte and pagan Goddess deities were destroyed and forgotten, becoming the "Whores of Babylon" later on in the bible. The old pagan goddesses were closely associated with the sacred snake, kundalini life force and the ouroboros, tree of life (Lilitu/Lilith), which were later demonized in Christianity. While the Goddess did live on for a few more thousand years, she was not as powerful as she had been during the hunter/gatherer prehistory. I also just wanted to mention the Goddess Sophia as well, who is/was the creation goddess, the spark in the void, who was worshipped by Gnostics. Arith, this is messy. You are expressing interesting things, but you are not linking your conclusions to specific, 'pagan', beliefs which we knew with certainty our ancestors held.
This seems like a complex web of guess-work you have constructed around a few pieces of conjecture on pre-pagan, Neolithic aspects of culture.
The truth of the matter is we, as 'pagans', are not those Stone Age people with those beliefs. Even genetically speaking, we are a different people, this is not the way of our ancestors.
Of course, the strongest pre-European genotype is R1b, often called the Celtic Gene, most noticeable in the BASQUE and the WELSH.

I live in Kansas which is the state located in the middle of the United States. There is a cemetery in northeast Kansas located on a ley line that runs through Kansas named Stull Cemetery. Stull's claim to fame is it being one of the legendary 7 portals to hell the devil visits twice a year. The cemetery is located a few miles from Topeka, Kansas. I have visited this cemetery twice. Both times I felt manic with energy. I am a spiritual Psychic medium following the Nordic path, so I am very highly charged as a human being everyday. This location supercharged me! Lol! There is also a haunted hotel a few miles away from Stull, in Lawrence, Kansas, that sits on the same ley line as Stull. I have been to this location as well and felt the same mania. I never understood why everyone kept saying the snakes and dragons were always the bad guy. And recently started seriously doubting the serpent in the garden was either. Even by the Christian story the serpent is the one that gave us the gift of knowledge and wisdom. Before that Adam and Eve were just the gardeners doing as told.
Yes, I am trying to find the truth behind all these stories, the story they aren't telling us. While my faith runs to the Celtic, Nordic, Greek and Native American, those are in my blood save the Greek. But Athena has guided me since before access to the rest was easy. But I look into all religions of the world because I believe there is a universal truth behind all of them. And that only in understanding and comparing can we find it.

I've always loved reptiles and nature as a child, and I feel pain in my heart when I see snakes being hurt. I would even say that one of my self-concepts is a kind of serpent, but I saw the domination that the vulgar Sun Cult followers meted out on beings that just wanted to breathe air and it turned me into a venomous cobra who lurks in the shadows. The Abrahamic idea of conquest just seems driven by a grandiose tyrant, one I never really knew in my heart, but I thought I did and sought out His favor in small ways throughout my life.
Well, you know what happened to the Archangel who worshipped Jehovah and didn't get out what he put in.
I remember as a child I had a very strong and strange feeling looking at this hill in the landscape near my grandfather's cabin in the woods. Turns out it was a "grave hill", as we call it, a 3000 year old burial mound and temple. Maybe I felt that life force. Nowadays I don't really have that feeling anymore, except sometimes when I'm really enjoying myself resting in nature. Maybe children are more sensitive, maybe I became too disconnected with nature when my parents moved to the city, maybe it was all just a coincidence, I don't know.
Thank you for the information about serpents, until now I always thought the slaying of a dragon was a motif referencing some kind of shamanic ordeal to manhood or something along those lines.
@sillybillybadboy I live in the Netherlands and have had some (legal) magic mushrooms once. Interesting experience. Now that I think of it, I did get that same feeling then as I did as a child watching those burial mounds. A very strong and powerful feeling, almost like a trance. Even visually looking at those burial mounds was strange as a kid and the same visual oddities occurred when I ate magic mushrooms. And they were pretty mild mushrooms, not too strong. I never really thought about the connection between the two experiences and now that you mention it the sensations were very similar. Interesting...
And in one other experience with weed I experienced that same trance-like sensation and visualised living in a cottage in a forest and hunting for food for a few hours.
I'm not that much of a drugs person so I tried both once. If they weren't legal here I'd never have done it in the first place, so I guess I got lucky being born here. Thanks for the insight, I never related my experiences with drugs to that burial mound experience. Unfortunately I havent't been able to reproduce that trance-like feeling as an adult, at least not very easily at all. But sometimes when I really focus on nature and relax, it somewhat resurfaces.

This reminded me of visiting Delphi and hearing from the tour guide that the site had been taken over by the God Apollo after he killed the Python in the temple already on the site. In pre-Hellenic time it had been Priestess run. With the rise of the Olympic Gods, Priests took over the site and began to "interpret" what the Priestesses said. What the tour guide didn't say and seemed to not understand herself was that with the rise of the Olympic gods also came the rise of patriarchy, and the emphasis on wealth, war, and conquering nature.

For all my years of being a converted Pagan, I never even thought about the political machinations of the stories of the killing of the Dragon in ancient stories and us today holding these stories in such high regard as 'beautiful', such as the medieval story of St George and the Dragon.

thank you for sharing your awakened sensitivity on this topic! aside from political machinations, what always disturbed me in the dragon-slaying stories (though I had no words to describe this as a child), was the image of (male) domination of a creature, hissing back with its last breath, knowing it is about to be violently killed. what an impactful image of subjugation to imprint on a young child's mind! the dragon seems to me to represent the brutal killing of every creature who has been seen by man as 'wild' and 'violent' and therefore deserving of death (by a 'valorous' 'hero') - ugh!

I live in Mexico and things went kind of the same way. Colonizers destroyed the indigenous temples and built churches in the same spot, even in Mexico City they used the very same stones to do some buildings in the 1500's. In the aztec mythology the serpents where also a symbol for knowledge, science and arts, especially one of the main deities, Quetzalcoatl was often depicted as a serpent. It's curious because I've thought the same thing. Mexican flag has an eagle eating a snake, and supposedly, that was a scene that aztecs saw in the little land that they'd eventually build their empire, Tenochtitlan and the current Mexico City. I really don't think that's an actual story and sounds more like a myth made but he catholics to do some religious colonization. They also took the Mother of deities Tonantzin and did a Catholic Virgin, with a huge temple where Tonantzin was prayed too.

This dude thinks the chaoskampf myth is fake lmao explain the parallels of the serpent slaying myth in pretty much every indo-European religion. Vritra/Indra, Zeus/Typhon, Veles/Perun ect. I agree however that the serpent was not always seen in a completely negative light however such as how Veles is viewed by the Slavs but his slaying is still a necessary part of existence

How about animals are just symbols? I'm tired of people trying to push a specific animal as "our spirit". Thinking that praying to a serpent is somehow life changing is silly. I realize this video is 4 years old from the time of my viewing of it right now, but man. It's cool to see someone from a totally different place living a totally different life to be on the same page. I've been saying a lot of this same stuff for years. Thor fighting Jormungandr being a story biased in Christian influence is a huge one for me. Both Thor and Jormungandr are called Protectors of Midgard at different times, though the title is a bit different for each. Thor's is a reference to being the protector of man kind who lives in Midgard, while Jormungandr is the protector of Midgard itself. If Thor kills the serpent, of course he dies, as does the world. How long could humanity survive after we've killed nature itself? Like Thor, not for much longer. Killing the serpent only kills ourselves with it. And so many pagan cultures knew this to be true. Aztec's with Quetzalcoatl (and surrounding cultures of ancient South America), Egyptians (where the Ouroboros symbol is first depicted as far as we know, and is a guardian to Ra), even the Babylonians knew this with ancient scriptures of Enki and Anku which very closely resemble the book of Gensis in the bible, though paints a very different picture. The war between the cross and the serpent is more ancient that people know. And there was once a cult of sorts known as the Brotherhood of the Serpent, of whom knew the truth of the Serpent and fought the earliest Christians to preserve the freedom of peoples spirituality and of the freedom of nature itself.

i think you fail to address the theories that the serpent at times presents an obvious symbol of the umbilical cord. killing the serpent, i.e. in beowulf and Hymiskviða, appear to be metaphors for conquering the umbilical cord (no longer needing it) and then soon after being born.

In the newest Godzilla film, there are many references to spiritual concepts. Many tend to be more Christian, but there are others. One of the Japanese characters, as they review depictions of dragons in ancient art and architecture, says
"the slaying of dragons is a Western concept. But in ancient times and even today in the East, dragons are venerated and are even seen as figures of redemption." ... Something along these lines.
But in this films, it is a dragon who defeats a dragon. So a form of primordial power and wisdom (Godzilla) must defeat a being of his scale who looks to destroy instead of create and protect (Ghidora).
So I believe we are meant to see a balance. Our gods and heroes in the myths are just like us, and are not above learning lessons and having imperfections. They fight each other, they trick each other, some kill each other. And so the serpent of Knowledge, the Reptile Brain within us all, must be kept in check and not be allowed to manifest in a fierce form and constrict us. TôR is that balance, as he is Electro Magnetic force, the force that keeps things distinct and in their place. From the space between each atom, to the space we need as people both from others and within ourselves (The 3 selves, the 9 Minds).
So I believe our ancient pre Christian ancestors would have still told the tales of great Serpents and primordial beasts being battled and defeated by Man and great Gods and heroes, but alike to animals we hunt, we envision it as a part of ourselves and to become part of ourselves. An Eternal Combat that creates conflict and spiritual and mental evolution.

David Icke has some very interesting ideas on the serpent cult. Robert Sepehr also has some very well informed information on the subject. You might also want to look into the works of Zechariah Sitchin.

@@adamqadmon He actually has good information on the subject up until he starts accusing people of shapeshifting. From an anthropological stand point, hes right about alot of things. Maybe not the whole, the queen is a lizard thing, but hes not completely bonkers. Don't you think that the mythologem of slaying the serpent is more related towards the nature of paradigm shifts? (a particular dragon representing a certain paradigm, which then has to be killed for a new paradigm to install itself) Cause, you know, once you dig christianity deep enough, you'll realize that it's very serpenty in nature too.
That is basically my thinking and it tends to be from a more matriarchal, nature based society, to a patriachal, city based society.
